Seasonal implications for taxonomic sufficiency to simplify M-AMBI methodology in the coastal area adjacent to a eutrophic estuary

Taxonomic sufficiency(TS)refers to identifying taxa to a taxonomic level sufficient to detect community changes in stressed environments and may provide a cost-effective approach in routine monitoring programs.However,there is still limited information regarding the seasonal impact of applying TS and its implications for the ecological quality evaluation in the estuarine ecosystem.This study investigated the relationship between the multivariate-AZTI’s Marine Biotic Index(M-AMBI)and environmental variables in three seasons(i.e.,spring,summer,and autumn)in the Liaohe River Estuary.We tested the reliability of TS for simplifying the M-AMBI methodology.The results showed that family and genus level data could reproduce the spatial-temporal patterns of community structure at the species level.The M-AMBI values showed a consistent spatial distribution pattern in all sampling seasons,with a decreasing trend with the increasing distance from the estuary mouth.Both genus and family level data performed nearly as well as species level in detecting the seasonal variations of pollutants(i.e.,nutrients and total organic content).The family level M-AMBI was feasible to discern stress in the Liaohe River Estuary because of the high aggregation ratios at different taxonomic levels in all sampling seasons.These findings suggest that applying taxonomic sufficiency based on the M-AMBI provides an efficient approach for evaluating ecological quality in the Liaohe River Estuary.

SUFFICIENT AND NECESSARY CONDITIONS ON THE EXISTENCE AND ESTIMATES OF BOUNDARY BLOW-UP SOLUTIONS FOR SINGULAR p-LAPLACIAN EQUATIONS

Transcriptome Analysis and Physiological Responses of Economic Macroalga Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis under Sulfate Deficiency

Sulfur is an essential macronutrient for the growth of all photosynthetic organisms and plays important roles in different metabolic pathways.However,sulfur metabolism and its related research on macroalgae with important ecological value is rather limited.In this study,marine ecological valued macroalga Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis was used to study the general physiological responses and transcriptome profiling under the sulfate deficiency.The relative growth rate of algae under sulfate deficiency was statistically significantly lower than that of control after 6 days.However,no significant differences were observed in the pigments content and Fv/Fm value,indicating that the photosynthesis was not obviously affected under the sulfate deficiency.Furthermore,the significantly increased soluble protein and carbohydrate contents,and indistinctively differentially expressed sulfate transporter/permease(ST)and ATP sulfurylase(ATPS)genes suggesting that G.lemaneiformis cells did not use sulfur from internal protein and carbohydrate pools but utilize stored sulfur from vacuole to satisfy their nutritional requirements during the sulfate deficiency.Transcriptome data showed that most annotated differentially expressed genes(DEGs)were down-regulated under the sulfate deficiency,including a large proportion of genes involved in the pathway of sulfur metabolism.Therefore,it was concluded that the pathway of sulfur metabolism was suppressed under the sulfate deficiency in G.lemaneiformis.The results and analysis in this study provide a comprehensive understanding for the physiological and molecular response of G.lemaneiformis to sulfate deficiency.

A Note on Diophantine Equation Ax^4+ 1 = By^2 and Erdos’ Conjecture on Combinatorial Number

Also, using a recently result of Ribet, Darmon and Merel, we proved that Erdos’ conjecture on combinatorial number is right.

Particle-in-Cell Simulations of Fast Magnetic Reconnection in Laser-Plasma Interaction

Recent experiments have observed magnetic reconnection in laser-produced high-energy-density(HED)plasma bubbles.We perform two-dimensional(2-D)particle-in-cell(PIC)simulations to investigate magnetic reconnection between two approaching HED plasma bubbles.It is found that the expanding velocity of the bubbles has a great influence on the process of magnetic reconnection.When the expanding velocity is small,a single X line reconnection is formed.However,when the expanding velocity is sufficiently large,we can observe a plasmoid in the vicinity of the X line.At the same time,the structures of the electromagnetic field in HED plasma reconnection are similar to that in Harris current sheet reconnection.

Analysis and Control of Two-Layer Frenkel–Kontorova Model

A one-dimensional two-layer Frenkel–Kontorova model is studied.Firstly,a feedback tracking control law is given.Then,the boundedness result for the error states of single particles of the model is derived using the Lyapunov Method.Especially,the motion of single particles can be approximated analytically for the case of sufficiently large targeted velocity.Simulations illustrate the accuracy of the derived results.

Mechanical model of water inrush from coal seam floor based on triaxial seepage experiments

In order to study the mechanism of confined water inrush from coal seam floor,the main influences on permeability in the process of triaxial seepage experiments were analyzed with methods such as laboratory experiments,theoretical analysis and mechanical model calculation.The crack extension rule and the ultimate destruction form of the rock specimens were obtained.The mechanism of water inrush was explained reasonably from mechanical point of view.The practical criterion of water inrush was put forward.The results show that the rock permeability "mutation" phenomenon reflects the differences of stress state and cracks extension rate when the rock internal crack begins to extend in large-scale.The rock ultimate destruction form is related to the rock lithology and the angle between crack and principal stress.The necessary condition of floor water inrush is that the mining pressure leads to the extension and transfixion of the crack.The sufficient condition of floor water inrush is that the confined water’s expansionary stress in normal direction and shear stress in tangential direction must be larger than the internal stress in the crack.With the two conditions satisfied at the same time,the floor water inrush accident will occur.

Optimal vector-valued intensity measure for seismic collapse assessment of structures

The present study is aimed to investigate the ability of different intensity measures （IMs）, including response spectral acceleration at the fundamental period of the structure, Sa（T1）, as a common scalar IM and twelve vector-valued IMs for seismic collapse assessment of structures. The vector-valued IMs consist of two components, with S（T1） as the first component and different parameters that are ratios of scalar IMs, as well as the spectral shape proxies εSa and N, as the second component. After investigating the properties of an optimal IM, a new vector-valued IM that includes the ratio of Sa（T1） to the displacement spectrum intensity （DSI） as the second component is proposed. The new IM is more efficient than other IMs for predicting the collapse capacity of structures. It is also sufficient with respect to magnitude, source-to-site distance, and scale factor for collapse capacity prediction of structures. To satisfy the predictability criterion, a ground motion prediction equation （GMPE） is determined for Sa（T1）/DSI by using the existing GMPEs. Furthermore, an empirical equation is proposed for obtaining the correlation between the components of the proposed IM. The results of this study show that using the new vector-valued IM leads to a more reliable seismic collapse assessment of structures.

Near optimal condition of OMP algorithm in recovering sparse signal from noisy measurement

This paper analyzes the performance of the orthogonal matching pursuit （OMP） algorithm in recovering sparse signals from noisy measurement. Considering the fact that some matrices satisfy some restricted isometry properties （RIPs） but not the coherence condition, a superior RIP-based condition is proposed, which means that if the measurement matrix satisfies δk＋1 〈 1/（2 ＋ √k） and the minimum component signal-to-noise ratio （MCSNR） is bounded, the OMP algorithm can exactly identify the support of the original sparse signal within k iterations. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by numerical simulations con- cerning different values of MCSNR and noise levels.

ON THE BELTRAMI FLOWS

To illustrate the general properties of the Beltrami flows,a new sufficient and necessary condi- tion of the general solution of the Beltrami flows has been given,on whose basis some sufficient and necessary conditions and sufficient conditions in literature are unified.The advantages of the new expressions are that one may get solutions of Beltrami flows with constant proportional factors which satisfy some given asymptotic decaying conditions at infinity.Finally,we find a class of spherical vortices of Beltrami flows,where the mo- tion trajectories of the fluid particles are confined within a sphere or two adjacent concentric spherical shells.We find that the superpositions of the spherical vortices of the same order with different polar axes may produce chaotic trajectories.

The boundedness and the norm of a class of integral operators Ta,b,c on Lλ^P spaces are studied in this paper. The author not only gives the sufficient and necessary condition for the boundedness of Ta,b,c on Lλ^P,but also obtains its accurate norm on Lλ^P for some range under the condition of c = n ＋ a ＋ b.

Observer Design for Systems with Time-delayed States

Recently, the conditions of observers that can estimate directly Kx（t） for an arbitrarily given K, and that are free of the effect of time delayed states of the system, are formulated. This paper points out that, because of the equivalence in formulation, the existing conditions for unknown input observers can be used to establish directly a new set of sufficient conditions for that recent observer. This new set of sufficient conditions is much simpler, and therefore much more useful and significant, than the sufficient conditions derived in that recent paper. This new set of sufficient conditions also reveals some basic mistakes of that recent paper. In addition, this paper reveals the severe restrictiveness of this new set of conditions and proposes a fundamentally new observer design formulation that can relax that set of conditions significantly.

Sufficient conditions of Rayleigh-Taylor stability and instability in equatorial ionosphere

Rayleigh-Taylor （R-T） instability is known as the fundamental mechanism of equatorial plasma bubbles （EPBs）. However, the sufficient conditions of R-T instability and stability have not yet been derived. In the present paper, the sufficient conditions of R-T stability and instability are preliminarily^derived. Linear equations for small perturbation are first obtained from the electron/ion continuity equations, momentum equations, and the current continuity equation in the equatorial ionosphere. The linear equations can be casted as an eigenvalue equation using a normal mode method. The eigenvalue equation is a variable coefficient linear equation that can be solved using a variational approach. With this approach, the sufficient conditions can be obtained as follows： if the minimum systematic eigenvalue is greater than one, the ionosphere is R-T unstable; while if the maximum systematic eigenvalue is less than one, the ionosphere is R-T stable. An approximate numerical method for obtaining the systematic eigenvalues is introduced, and the R-T stable/unstable areas are calculated. Numerical experiments axe designed to validate the sufficient conditions. The results agree with the derived suf- ficient conditions.
