Although the relationship between the size of urban industrial land use and pollutant emissions has been widely discussed from different perspectives(e.g.,the scale and crowding effects),the results of various studies have revealed positive,negative,and combined impact relationships.However,how the expansion of urban industrial land use affects SO_(2) emissions remains unknown.We need to clarify this relationship in order to facilitate the realization of China’s pollution reduction and emission reduction goals.This study used the panel data from 294 cities spanning from 2011 to 2019 to construct a spatial econometric model.The objective was to explore the correlation between the scale of urban industrial land and sulfur dioxide emissions in China.The results show that a large scale of urban industrial land use corresponds to lower sulfur dioxide emissions per unit of industrial added value.By gaining a deeper understanding of the relationship between the scale of urban industrial land use and sulfur dioxide emissions,policymakers can further reduce pollutant emissions by rationalizing the planning of urban industrial land use and industrial layout.In addition to promoting industrial agglomeration and economies of scale in cities with extensive industrial land use,this strategy can support the development of efficient and environmentally friendly industries in areas with limited industrial land use.Optimizing the technology and encouraging the development of green industries can help reduce environmental pollution and promote sustainable urban development. 展开更多

As the major source of air pollution,sulfur dioxide(S0_(2))emissions have become the focus of global attention.However,existing studies rarely consider spatial effects when discussing the relationship between foreign direct investment(FDI)and S0_(2) emissions.This study took the Yangtze River Delta as the research area and used the spatial panel data of 26 cities in this region for 2004-2017.The study investigated the spatial agglomeration effects and dynamics at work in FDI and S0_(2) emissions by using global and local measures of spatial autocorrelation.Then,based on regression analysis using a results of traditional ordinary least squares(OLS)model and a spatial econometric model,the spatial Durbin model(SDM)with spatial-time effects was adopted to quantify the impact of FDI on S0_(2) emissions,so as to avoid the regression results bias caused by ignoring the spatial effects.The results revealed a significant spatial autocorrelation between FDI and S0_(2) emissions,both of which displayed obvious path dependence characteristics in their geographical distribution.A series of agglomeration regions were observed on the spatial scale.The estimation results of the SDM showed that FDI inflow promoted S0_(2) emissions,which supports the pollution haven hypothesis.The findings of this study are significant in the prevention and control of air pollution in the Yangtze River Delta. 展开更多

Characteristics of the Acid Rain Variation in China During 1993-2006 and Associated Causes 被引量:12

The acid rain observation network of China Meteorological Administration was established in 1989 with 22 stations.From 1993 to 2005,more than 80 stations were included and maintained in the network.In 2006-2007,the number of stations in the network went up to 294.In consideration of the data continuity,data used in this paper are the 14-yr observations of the 80 stations from 1993 to 2006.Based on the 14-yr observation of acid rain,analysis shows that the acid rain in China dominates in the vast regions south of the Yangtze River.Limited presence of acid rain is observed in the northern part of China.The 14-yr acid rain data reveal an expanding tendency for acid rain area,with the north of China being a growing zone,and the South China remaining virtually unchanged.The most severely polluted zone of acid rain gradually moves from Southwest China to Central China and the middle part of South China.With regard to the acid intensity of rain,the period of 1993-1998 bears the highest acid intensity;the period of 1999-2002 shows a bit weakening intensity;and in the period of 2003-2006,the acid intensity of rain increases again,basically up to the average acidity of the period of 1993-1998 by the end of 2006.In addition,rain acidity in the north of China increases markedly.As to the causes of the acid rain situation in China,this paper examined the sulfur dioxide emissions as well as the rainwater chemicals monitoring data. 展开更多

The time series showed over... Ultrafine particles are associated with adverse health effects. Total Particle Number Concentration(TNC) of fine particles were measured during 2002 at the St. Louis — Midwest supersite. The time series showed overall low level with frequent large peaks. The time series was analyzed alongside criteria pollutant measurements and meteorological observations. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify further contributing factors and to determine the association of different pollutants with TNC levels. This showed the strong contribution of sulfur dioxide(SO2) and nitrogen oxides(NO x) to high TNC levels. The analysis also suggested that increased dispersion resulting from faster winds and higher mixing heights led to higher TNC levels. Overall, the results show that there were intense particle nucleation events in a SO2 rich plume reaching the site which contributed around 29% of TNC. A further 40% was associated with primary emissions from mobile sources. By separating the remaining TNC by time of day and clear sky conditions,we suggest that most likely 8% of TNC are due to regional nucleation events and 23% are associated with the general urban background. 展开更多
