Delamination is a prevalent type of damage in composite laminate structures. Its accumulation degrades structural performance and threatens the safety and integrity of aircraft. This study presents a method for the quantitative identification of delamination identification in composite materials, leveraging distributed optical fiber sensors and a model updating approach.Initially,a numerical analysis is performed to establish a parameterized finite element model of the composite plate. Then, this model subsequently generates a database of strain responses corresponding to damage of varying sizes and locations. The radial basis function neural network surrogate model is then constructed based on the numerical simulation results and strain responses captured from the distributed fiber optic sensors. Finally,a multi-island genetic algorithm is employed for global optimization to identify the size and location of the damage. The efficacy of the proposed method is validated through numerical examples and experiment studies, examining the correlations between damage location, damage size, and strain responses. The findings confirm that the model updating technique,in conjunction with distributed fiber optic sensors, can precisely identify delamination in composite structures. 展开更多

Flexible sensors are used widely in wearable devices, specifically flexible piezoresistive sensors, which are common and easy to manipulate. However, fabricating such sensors is expensive and complex, so proposed here is a simple fabrication approach involving a sensor containing microstructures replicated from a sandpaper template onto which polydimethylsiloxane containing a mixture of graphene and carbon nanotubes is spin coated. The surface morphologies of three versions of the sensor made using different grades of sandpaper are observed, and the corresponding pressure sensitivities and linearity and hysteresis characteristics are assessed and analyzed. The results show that the sensor made using 80-mesh sandpaper has the best sensing performance. Its sensitivity is 0.341 kPa-1in the loading range of 0–1.6 kPa, it responds to small external loading of 100 Pa with a resistance change of 10%, its loading and unloading response times are 0.126 and 0.2 s, respectively, and its hysteresis characteristic is ~7%, indicating that the sensor has high sensitivity, fast response, and good stability. Thus, the presented piezoresistive sensor is promising for practical applications in flexible wearable electronics. 展开更多

Advancements in sensor technology have significantly enhanced atmospheric monitoring.Notably, metal oxide and carbon(MO_(x)/C)hybrids have gained attention for their exceptional sensitivity and room-temperature sensing performance. However, previous methods of synthesizing MO_(x)/C composites suffer from problems, including inhomogeneity, aggregation, and challenges in micropatterning.Herein,we introduce a refined method that employs a metal–organic framework(MOF)as a precursor combined with direct laser writing. The inherent structure of MOFs ensures a uniform distribution of metal ions and organic linkers, yielding homogeneous MO_(x)/C structures. The laser processing facilitates precise micropatterning(<2μm,comparable to typical photolithography)of the MO_(x)/C crystals. The optimized MOF-derived MO_(x)/C sensor rapidly detected ethanol gas even at room temperature(105 and 18 s for response and recovery, respectively),with a broad range of sensing performance from 170 to 3,400 ppm and a high response value of up to 3,500%.Additionally,this sensor exhibited enhanced stability and thermal resilience compared to previous MOF-based counterparts. This research opens up promising avenues for practical applications in MOF-derived sensing devices. 展开更多

A rectangular finite element for laminated plate with bonded and/or embedded piezoelectric sensors and actuators is developed based on the variational principle and the first order shear deformation theory. The element has four-node, 20-degrees-of-freedom with one potential degree of freedom for each piezoelectric layer to represent the piezoelectric behavior. The higher order derivation of deflection is obtained by using the normal rotation expressions to take the effects of transverse shear deformation into considerations. The finite element can accurately simulate the deformation of both thin and moderately thick plates. A Fortran program is written and a number of benchmark tests are exercised to verify its effectiveness. Results are compared well with the existing data. The unbalanced composite with piezoelectric layers is then analyzed by using the model. Results show that the changes of the ratio between the thickness of positive angle layers and the negative angle layers have an effect on the deformation of the structure under the same electric loading. 展开更多

Steel-concrete composite structures(SCCS)have been widely used as primary load-bearing components in large-scale civil infrastructures. As the basis of the co-working ability of steel plate and concrete, the bonding status plays an essential role in guaranteeing the structural performance of SCCS.Accordingly, efficient non-destructive testing(NDT)on interfacial debondings in SCCS has become a prominent research area.Multi-channel analysis of surface waves(MASW)has been validated as an effective NDT technique for interfacial debonding detection for SCCS.However, the feasibility of MASW must be validated using experimental measurements. This study establishes a high-frequency data synchronous acquisition system with 32 channels to perform comparative verification experiments in depth.First, the current sensing approaches for high-frequency vibration and stress waves are summarized.Secondly, three types of contact sensors, namely, piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate(PZT)patches,accelerometers,and ultrasonic transducers, are selected for MASW measurement. Then, the selection and optimization of the force hammer head are performed.Comparative experiments are carried out for the optimal selection of ultrasonic transducers,PZT patches, and accelerometers for MASW measurement. In addition, the influence of different pasting methods on the output signal of the sensor array is discussed.Experimental results indicate that optimized PZT patches, acceleration sensors, and ultrasonic transducers can provide efficient data acquisition for MASW-based non-destructive experiments. The research findings in this study lay a solid foundation for analyzing the recognition accuracy of contact MASW measurement using different sensor arrays. 展开更多

In recent years, advanced composite structures are used extensively in many industries such as aerospace, aircraft, automobile, pipeline and civil engineering. Reliability and safety are crucial requirements posed by them to the advanced composite structures be- cause of their harsh working conditions. Therefore, as a very important measure, structural health monitoring (SHM) in-service is deft- nitely demanded for ensuring their safe working in-situ. In this paper, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are surface-mounted on the hoop and in the axial directions of a FRP pressure vessel to monitor the strain status during its pressurization. The experimental results show that the FBG sensors could be used to monitor the strain development and determine the ultimate failure strain of the composite pressure vessel. 展开更多

This study presents the fabrication and investigation (PANI) composite films. A blend of 3 wt.% OD with 1 of humidity sensors based on orange dye (OD) and polyaniline wt.% PANI was prepared in 1 ml water. The composite films were deposited on glass substrates between pre-deposited silver electrodes. The gap between the electrodes was 45 um. The sensing mechanism was based on the impedance and capacitance variations due to the absorption/desorption of water vapor. It was observed that with the increase in relative humidity (RH) from 30% to 90%, the impedance decreases by 5.2 × 10^4 and 8.8 × 10^3 times for the frequencies of 120 Hz and 1 kHz, respectively. The impedance-humidity relationship showed a more uniform change compared to the capacitance-humidity relationship in the RH range of 30% to 90%. The consequence of annealing, measuring frequency, response and recovery time, and absorption-desorption behavior of the humidity sensor were also discussed in detail. The annealing resulted in an increase in sensitivity of up to 2.5 times, while the measured response time and recovery time were 34 s and 450 s, respectively. The impedance-humidity relationship was simulated. 展开更多

A kind of piezoresistive response extraction method for smart cement-based composites/sensors was proposed. Two kinds of typical piezoresistive cement-based composites/sensors were fabricated by respectively adding carbon nanotubes and nickel powders as conductive fillers into cement paste or cement mortar. The variation in measured electrical resistance of such cement-based composites/sensors was explored without loading and under repeated compressive loading and impulsive loading. The experimental results indicate that the measured electrical resistance of piezoresistive cement-based composites/sensors exhibits a two-stage variation trend of fast increase and steady increase with measurement time without loading, and an irreversible increase after loading. This results from polarization caused by ionic conduction in these composites/sensors.After reaching a plateau, the measured electrical resistance can be divided into an electrical resistance part and an electrical capacity part. The piezoresistive responses of electrical resistance part in measured electrical resistance to loading can be extracted by eliminating the linear electrical capacity part in measured electrical resistance. 展开更多

The capability of embedded piezoelectric wafer active sensors(PWAS)to perform in-situ nondestructive evaluation(NDE)for structural health monitoring(SHM)of reinforced concrete(RC)structures strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)composite overlays is explored.First, the disbond detection method were developed on coupon specimens consisting of concrete blocks covered with an FRP composite layer. It was found that the presence of a disbond crack drastically changes the electromecfianical(E/M)impedance spectrum lneasurcd at the PWAS terlninals. The spectral changes depend on the distance between the PWAS and the crack tip.Second, large scale experiments were conducted on a RC beam strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP)composite overlay. The beam was subject to an accelerated fatigue load regime in a three-point bending configuration up to a total of 807,415 cycles.During these fatigue tests, the CFRP overlay experienced disbonding beginning at about 500,000 cycles. The PWAS were able to detect the disbonding before it could be reliably seen by visual inspection.Good correlation between the PWAS readings and the position and extent of disbond damage was observed. These preliminary results demonstrate the potential of PWAS technology for SHM of RC structures strengthened with FRP composite overlays. 展开更多

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) with a composite optical structure composed of phase-grating and optical cavity structures are designed to enhance both the system detection efficiency and the response bandwidth. Numerical simulation by the finite-difference time-domain method shows that the photon absorption capacity of SNSPDs with a composite optical structure can be enhanced significantly by adjusting the parameters of the phase-grating and optical cavity structures at multiple frequency bands. The absorption capacity of the superconducting nanowires reaches 70%, 72%, 60.73%, 61.7%, 41.2%, and 46.5% at wavelengths of 684, 850, 732, 924, 1256, and 1426nm, respectively. The use of a composite optical structure reduces the total filling factor of superconducting nanowires to only 0.25, decreases the kinetic inductance of SNSPDs, and improves the count rates. 展开更多

A reliable understanding of the properties of 3-D braided composites is of primary importance for proper utilization of these materials. A new method is introduced to study the mechanical performance of braided composite materials using embedded optic fiber sensors. Experimental research is performed to devise a method of incorporating optic fibers into a 3-D braided composite structure. The efficacy of this new testing method is evaluated on two counts. First, the optical performance of optic fibers is studied before and after incorporated into 3-D braided composites, as well as after completion of the manufacturing process for 3-D braided composites, to validate the ability of the optic fiber to survive the manufacturing process. On the other hand, the influence of incorporated optic fiber on the original braided composite is also researched by tension and compression experiments. Second, two kinds of optic fiber sensors are co-embedded into 3-D braided composites to evaluate their respective ability to measure the internal strain. Experimental results show that multiple optic fiber sensors can be co-braided into 3-D braided composites to determine their internal strain which is difficult to be fulfilled by other current existing methods. 展开更多

Conductive polymer composites(CPCs)are widely used in the flexible strain sensors due to their simple fabrication process and controllable sensing properties. However, temperature has a significance impact on the strain sensing performance of CPCs.In this paper, the strain sensing characteristics of MWCNTs/PDMS composites under temperature loading were systematically studied. It was found that the sensitivity decreased with the increase of temperature and the phenomenon of shoulder peak also decreased.Based on the theory of polymer mechanics,it was found that temperature could affect the conductive network by changing the motion degree of PDMS molecular chain, resulting in the change of sensing characteristics. Finally,a mathematical model of the resistance against loading condition(strain and temperature),associated with the force−electrical equivalent relationship of composites, was established to discuss the experimental results as well as the sensing mechanism. The results presented in this paper was believed helpful for the further application of strain sensors in different temperature conditions. 展开更多

The monitoring of mechanical deformation and damage of composite materials is normally performed by established analytical methods, such as strain gauges and optical and piezoelectric sensors. However, large areas outside of the measuring cell remain unconsidered.A large-area sensitive sensor for composites is presented, which is simply generated by printing a carbon layer on the reinforcing glass fiber fabrics or on any composite itself.Such printed sensors enable to determine mechanical deformations and damages of the entire component and it responds with a measurable electrical resistance to external tension or pressure without any hysteresis. The strongest influence on sensor signal was identified with low carbon concentration and thin layers. The sensors signal linearly correlates with the degree of deformation and bending velocity whereas bending direction can be identified through signal change under residual tensile stress or compressive stress. 展开更多

A self referenced fiber optic refractive index sensor is developed to measure quantitative cure extent of epoxy. In case the sensor is applied to in situ cure monitoring of epoxy composites, each sensor embedded in different location within the structure is self referenced and can be normalized to a common scale. Therefore, the real time comparative of each sensor’s output becomes possible and variations in the extent of cure at different locations can be monitored. The developed sensor was used to monitor the isothermal cure of an epoxy system. The output of the sensor was compared with the results of the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Growing health awareness triggers the public's concern about health problems. People want a timely and comprehensive picture of their condition without frequent trips to the hospital for costly and cumbersome general check-ups. The wearable technique provides a continuous measurement method for health monitoring by tracking a person's physiological data and analyzing it locally or remotely.During the health monitoring process, different kinds of sensors convert physiological signals into electrical or optical signals that can be recorded and transmitted, consequently playing a crucial role in wearable techniques. Semi-flexible composite mixture(SFCM)is a kind of pavement material formed by pouring cement-based grout material into a porous asphalt mixture with air voids from 20%to 30%.SFCM is widely used for its outstanding anti-rutting performance. Its mechanical performance is complicated due to its heterogeneity and interlocking structure.According to the present study, asphalt deforms at different temperatures, whereas cement-based grout has no similar characteristics.Rare research focuses on the temperature-based performance of SFCM.Therefore, the study was on the thermal performance of SFCM by seven open-graded asphalt mixture skeletons with different porosities and two types of grouts with early strength(ES)and high strength(HS).The test temperatures ranged from 10℃to 60℃.The mechanical investigation was performed using the semi-circular-bending(SCB)and beam bending tests. The strain sensor was used for analyzing the thermal performance of SFCM.The results show that the temperature significantly affected the SFCM's performance. The porosity was selected for three sections based on the trend of fracture energy(Gf)curves at 25℃.The turning points were the porosity values of 20%and 26%.The initiation slope during elastic deformation increases with the porosity increase. This trend was more evident at intermediate temperature. The shrink strain of SFCM was lower than that of the usual asphalt mixture(AC).The thermal stress of the SFCM filled with HS(HS-SFCM)was higher than that of the SFCM filled with ES(ES-SFCM)at 10℃.Moreover,the thermal failure characteristics of SFCM were influenced by porosity. 展开更多

Composite organohydrogels have been widely used in wearable electronics. However,it remains a great challenge to develop mechanically robust and multifunctional composite organohydrogels with good dispersion of nanofillers and strong interfacial interactions. Here, multifunctional nanofiber composite reinforced organohydrogels(NCROs)are prepared. The NCRO with a sandwich-like structure possesses excellent multi-level interfacial bonding.Simultaneously, the synergistic strengthening and toughening mechanism at three different length scales endow the NCRO with outstanding mechanical properties with a tensile strength(up to 7.38±0.24 MPa),fracture strain(up to 941±17%),toughness(up to 31.59±1.53 MJ m~(-3))and fracture energy(up to 5.41±0.63 kJ m~(-2)).Moreover,the NCRO can be used for high performance electromagnetic interference shielding and strain sensing due to its high conductivity and excellent environmental tolerance such as anti-freezing performance.Remarkably, owing to the organohydrogel stabilized conductive network, the NCRO exhibits superior long-term sensing stability and durability compared to the nanofiber composite itself. This work provides new ideas for the design of high-strength,tough,stretchable,anti-freezing and conductive organohydrogels with potential applications in multifunctional and wearable electronics. 展开更多
