The effect of cerium on adhesion between TiN coating and substrate was studied. The microstructures and composition of TiN coatings were also investigated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X ray diffraction (XRD) technique. It was found that cerium is an effective modifying agent and the addition of suitable amount of cerium to TiN coatings can produce relatively excellent properties such as micro hardness, wear resistance, oxidation resistance and porosity. The experimental results show that the added cerium in TiN coatings makes a contribution to form the preferred direction along with a (111) or (222) close packed face, which may be one of the reasons that improves some properties mentioned above.展开更多

The effect of optimum processing parameters on corrosion resistance of RECCs, such as density of treating solution, temperature and time of coating formation were discussed. Protective performance of conversion coatings on magnesium alloy was evaluated by moisture/heating test, anodic polarization, etc. The results show that Ce-based RECCs under moisture/heating condition can remain intact, with high coverage and no obvious corrosion phenomenon. Corrosion potential increases and passive phenomenon occurs while current density decreases, therefore Ce-based RECCs can improve corrosion resistance of AZ91 magnesium alloy. The morphology of Ce-based RECCs prepared under optimum process through SEM observation is found to be a few particles coherent to the base coating, and the coating has no cracks and exhibits apparent corrosion resistance during corrosion courses of AZ91 magnesium alloy.展开更多

The effects of processing parameters, including the drawing velocity and coating temperature, on the coating thickness were investigated. It is found that the coating thickness increases with the increase in drawing velocity but decreases with the increase in coating temperature. A fluid mechanical model was developed to quantify the coating thickness under various processing conditions. By using this theoretical model, the coating thickness was calculated, and the calculated values are in good agreement with the experimental data.展开更多

SEM and EDS were used to examine the morphology and composition respectively. Hydrogen resistance performance was tested by exposing the magnets in 10 MPa hydrogen gas at room temperature. The results show that the magnets with 8 μm Al/Al_2O_3 coatings can withstand hydrogen of 10 MPa for 65 min without being embrittled into powder. The samples with and without hydrogen resistance coatings have almost the same magnetic properties.展开更多

CulnSe2 thin films were successfully prepared by precursor layers, which were coated using these pastes, and were annealed in a H2 atmosphere. The pastes were tested by laser particle diameter analyzer, simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis instruments (TG-DTA), and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Selenized films were characterized by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results indicate that chalcopyrite CuInSe2 is formed at 180℃ and the crystallinity of this phase is improved as the temperature rises. All the CuInSe2 thin films, which were annealed at various temperatures, exhibit the preferred orientation along the (112) plane. The compression of precursor layers before selenization step is one of the most essential factors for the preparation of perfect CuInSe2 thin films.展开更多

Microstructures, thermal stabilities and tribological properties of the sprayed coatings were analyzed. The coating performances showed a strong dependence on the intrinsic characters of the compositions, i.e., glass-forming ability (GFA) and supercooled liquid region (ATx). The coatings tended to exhibit higher amorphous phase fraction for the composition with higher GFA and lower porosity for that with larger ATX. All the coatings exhibited superior wear resistance compared with the substrate. Higher wear resistance could be obtained in coatings with higher amorphous phase fraction, i.e. higher GFA of the composition. This study has important implications for composition selecting and optimizing in the fabrication of metallic glass coatings.展开更多
