Symbolism of the Shadows in Son of Man by Roa Bastos

In his novel Son of Man, Augusto Roa Bastos uses images and symbols of shadows to represent the ramifications ofthe Paraguayan Dr. Jose Rodriguez de Francia＇s dictatorship. Rodriguez de Francia＇s legacy, which begins duringthe postcolonial years and extends well into the 20th century, resonates in the novel in soeio-political structures andcharacters＇ ideologies and behaviors. It allows for plantation owners to enslave workers and their families; itconfines and oppresses people through unfounded legends and myths; and among other things, it creates a falseidea of purpose and patriotism in the Chaco War （1932-1935）, which in the end lets down the soldiers. Tocounteract these deleterious social conditions, Roa Bastos creates surreal characters, such as a fantastic helper whoaids plantation workers to escape dehumanizing situations. Roa Bastos also narrates how the people in Itapr, asmall town, make an idol of a Christ statue carved by one of their own. However, when the two Goiburfl brothersreplace the statue by crucifying their sister＇s rapist, the people＇s myth is destroyed. Likewise, Roa Bastos availshimself of Christian and Catholic concepts and symbols to transpose them into a humanistic ideology so as toconvey hope to his people through a new perspective. In this way, a new Annunciation takes place when the son ofa raped woman is born. In the end, Roa Bastos lets the course of these warped transpositions take their logicaldenouement： In the absence of a purpose beyond an earthly existence, death becomes the narrator＇s option.

The Oceanic Imagination: Affects, Surreal Images and Strings

The creative forces of affects are considered to be a mysterious power within our immanence. Although creators exist like lonely islands and may be more vulnerable to poor health, it is problematic to draw an inference that mental illness nourishes creativity. Artists, philosophers, and scientists have to struggle with chaos to create a new vision into their works. This paper argues that first, the creativity of affects is a mysterious power of our immanence, not nourished by pathology;second, the surreal images of curved and juxtaposed spaces by the artists resonate with the scientific experiments conducted by string physicists who propose the existence of multiverse with the possibility of 11-dimensional spaces. Therefore, the creators have shared the equally-important status as the singular beings in their different modes of lives. Deleuze’s and Guattari’s creative concepts of philosophy help improve the better understanding of the mysterious power of oceanic affects within our immanence. Thus, the general opinion that creativity and mental illness are infamously connected should be entirely re-questioned and re-examined.

Visual Representations in Richard Aldington＇s London （May 1915） and Eros and Psyche

Through reading Walter Benjamin＇s critical essay, Surrealism： The Last Snapshot of the European Intelligentsia, the authors of this research would like to trace the key point of Surrealist aesthetics, particularly the juxtapositions of visual objects in the city of London. Richard Aldington＇s two poems, London （May 1915） and Eros andPsyche, come to depict Surrealist image spheres, as their visual representations in words would show. The dialectical optic of the poet comes to reveal an allegorical synthesis, giving birth to new meanings. The city of London shows the irrational fusion of the opposites, in a way which a Surrealist reading of these two poems is able to construct a critical virtue.

In a modern context, Seabiscuit, Black Beauty, Silver, steed of the iconic Lone Ranger, and Tir na nog, from Irish folk tale history, have maintained the tradition of nobility. High comedic elements such as TV＇s Mr. Ed, Aspercel, from The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit （1968）, Ollie, of Laurel and Hardy fame, reincarnated as a horse, and Tir na nog, hiding in an elevator to avoid being apprehended by the law, help to complete the comedic portrait of equine nobility

Towards a Surreal Spin Theory: Surreal Superstrings?

We propose a surreal spin theory. Our basic mathematical tools are the dyadic rational number which is one of the key mathematical notions in surreal number theory. We argue that from the perspective of such surreal numbers, bosons and fermions, and therefore supersymmetry, are mere particular cases of a very much larger dyadic spin structure which include -spin (semionics), -spin and in general -spin, with m odd integer and n a positive natural number. Finally, we conjecture that this development could imply the existence of a surreal superstring theory.

Anime movie is a branch of cinematics.Unlike traditional movies,anime movies stand out with special characteristics in terms of how they shape the personality of the characters and how they portray the inner world of those characters.“Realism”and“surrealism”are important elements in anime movies to portray the stories.In this article,the special aesthetic of anime movies is analyzed using the works produced by Hayao Miyazaki.The internal conflict between“realism”and“surrealism”is analyzed in order to understand the character image and story theme in an in-depth manner.

Some Mathematical and Physical Remarks on Surreal Numbers

We make a number of observations on Conway surreal number theory which may be useful, for further developments, in both mathematics and theoretical physics. In particular, we argue that the concepts of surreal numbers and matroids can be linked. Moreover, we established a relation between the Gonshor approach on surreal numbers and tensors. We also comment about the possibility to connect surreal numbers with supersymmetry. In addition, we comment about possible relation between surreal numbers and fractal theory. Finally, we argue that the surreal structure may provide a different mathematical tool in the understanding of singularities in both high energy physics and gravitation.

Meaning in Architecture and Landscape Architecture: Enhancement of Contemporary Design Practices Based on the Review of Postmodernism and Surrealism Aesthetic Philosophies

The study explored surrealist aesthetic philosophies in relation with referential postmodern architecture,and landscape architecture,to communicate meaning with the audience.These philosophies provide lessons about the potential of the built environment to address the emotional and psychological needs of the public,that is,to address the vital social,ecological,and functional needs of modern society.According to this,the purpose of the study was two-fold.The first is to analyze the visual techniques and forms that are used in referential postmodern architecture and landscape architecture in relation with surrealist aesthetic philosophies,to communicate meaning with the audience.Second is to demonstrate the relevance of these visual theories,to enhance contemporary design practices.The study emphasized the potential of art forms that provide meaning to address the physiological and spiritual needs of the society.Hence,it re-established landscape architecture as an art form capable of enriching human psychological and spiritual well-being,which is opposed to the conservative utilitarian natures of the field.

Prophetic Collage: Bella Li's Lost Lake

With an eye to the workings of collage-in particular its prophetic temporality-I explore the collage practice of the Australian poet Bella Li,with a focus on her second book,Lost Lake(2018).Taking my cue from movements of broken or disjunctive association in Li*s work,I seek to mirror Li’s poetic collages with a reading that is itself both exploratory and associative.Beginning by commenting on the circularity of collage,this article itself becomes a kind of collage.Li's surrealist practice,layering evocative object(word,image,idea)over evocative object,instigates a chain of associations.Via such sequences’ellipses and associative chains,Li writes poetry as transtemporal collage,as a surrealist dream,and as prophecy of what was and is and is yet to come.

Augusta Savage’s“Lift Every Voice and Sing”(The Harp)as a Work of“Objective”Art

Augusta Savage’s“Lift Every Voice and Sing”is discussed as a composite work showing influences from ancient Egyptian musical instruments,surrealism,August Rodin,and ancient Egyptian funerary and devotional sculpture.The sculpture is a significant departure from the social realist sculpture of the New Deal era.“Objective”artworks like Savage’s sculpture have been overwritten by inadequate investigations.Savage approximates the shape of Rodin’s hand and arm in the sound board of her harp.A comparison of Savage’s sculpture with a concert harp shows that the kneeling figure(the foot pedal)is at the wrong end of the harp.In“objective”art mistakes are meaningful,while in“subjective”art mistakes have no useful status.The mistaken position of the kneeling figure at the front of Savage’s magical harp establishes it as the most significant aspect of the esoteric symbolism of Savage’s sculpture.Savage’s sculpture implicates A.R.Orage's esoteric intervention in history.
