Here there are mega-cities like Shanghai, Nanjing and the attached urban areas of different sizes including those along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River from Shanghai up to Nanjing as well as their satellite cities and towns, forming one of the most densely distributed urban areas in China. This is a case study done in Suzhou city at the center of the Yangtze delta to reflect the impact of urban sprawl on soil resources using satellite images and digital soil databases. The extent of the developed land in the studied area and the impact of development on soil resources at 1:100,000 scale are estimated and the soil types impacted most by urbanization development are determined through overlaying the soil map on the satellite images (Landsat-7) of the studied area at different times (1984, 1995, 2000 and 2003). The methodology for this study consists of analyzing data resulting from using a geographic information system (GIS) to combine urban land use maps of different times derived from satellite images with data on soil characteristics contained in the established soil databases by which some results come into being to present the fast expanding trend of urbanization in the Yangtze delta area, the urban spread and the soils occupied by the urbanization process, and also the quality of the occupied soils.展开更多

It is located in a tidal estuary at the junction of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek in Shanghai, China. In this study, physical and 2D vertical mathematical models were used to investigate and distinguish the mechanism of siltation downstream of an underwater plain gate from that of other gates types. According to quantitative data obtained by site investigation and the application of the physical hydrodynamic models, it was found that the characteristics of the tidal estuary as well as the fact that the sluice span is equal to the creek width are the major reasons contributing to siltation. A possible desiltation treatment system is proposed for the underwater plain gate. The system includes selection of a suitable location that allows the determination of a reasonable top elevation of the sluice floor, reserving sufficient space under the gate to accommodate siltation, setting up a mechanical desiltation system, and flushing silt along with overflow over the top of the gate. Furthermore, on-site hydraulic silt flushing experiments and a topography survey were conducted. These results showed that the measurement system is effective, and by maintaining this scheduled operation once a month, the downstream riverbed has been maintained in a good condition.展开更多

A problem using conventional statistical methods in land use analysis is that these methods assume the data to be statistically independent. But in fact, they have the tendency to be dependent, a phenomenon known as multicollinearity, especially in the cases of few observations. In this paper, a Partial Least-Squares (PLS) regression approach is developed to study relationships between land use and its influencing factors through a case study of the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou region in China. Multicollinearity exists in the dataset and the number of variables is high compared to the number of observations. Four PLS factors are selected through a preliminary analysis. The correlation analyses between land use and influencing factors demonstrate the land use character of rural industrialization and urbanization in the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou region, meanwhile illustrate that the first PLS factor has enough ability to best describe land use patterns quantitatively, and most of the statistical relations derived from it accord with the fact. By the decreasing capacity of the PLS factors, the reliability of model outcome decreases correspondingly.展开更多

Two polycyclic musks, 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8-hexahydro-4, 6, 6, 7, 8, 8-hexamethylcyclopenta(g)-2-benzopyran (HHCB) and 7-acetyl-1, 1, 1, 3, 4, 4, 6-hexamethyl-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydronaphthalene (AHTN), were found in all samples. The ranges of HHCB and AHTN were from 8 ng/L to 138 ng/L and from 1 ng/L to 25 ng/L in surface waters, and from 2 ng/g to 77 ng/g (dry weight) and from 1 ng/g to 31 ng/g (dry weight) in sediments respectively. The total concentration of HHCB and AHTN showed obvious spatial change in surface waters: the upper reaches (suburb) 13 less than the lower course (urban area); and in sediments, the musk levels were also higher in urban area. The distribution pattern also showed seasonaly varied characteristics both in surface waters and sediments. The distribution coefficient (Kp) and standardized distribution coefficient (Koc) were calculated through musk concentrations and octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow). The results showed that AHTN was more easily absorbed in sediments. The adsorption of musk was increased with the increasing of total organic carbon (TOC) in Suzhou Creek. The significant positive correlation of HHCB and AHTN was found in this study, which indicated the same pollution source: the use and discharge of flavoring substances.展开更多

[Method] According to annual snow cover days and correlated data in Suzhou during 1961-2010, by using linear trend method, accumulative anomaly and complete correlation coefficient method, etc., the climatic variation characteristics of snow cover days and its influence factors in Suzhou were analyzed. [Result] In recent 50 years, the snow cover period in Suzhou presented shortened trend. Except days of snow cover (≥20 cm), the annual snow cover days at each thickness all showed varying degrees of decrease trend. The annual snow cover days had wavy decline trend, and the decline amplitude was 0.84 d/10 a. From the 1960s to prior period of the 1970s, the annual snow cover days presented increase trend. From middle and later periods of the 1970s to middle period of the 1980s, the snow cover days was less and gradually increased from later period of the 1980s to the early 1990s. From middle period of the 1990s to 2003, it entered into less snow period again. From 2004 to now, it presented oscillation of snowy and less-snow alternating. The main climatic factor which affected annual snow cover days in Suzhou was average temperature. The second one was average surface temperature. [Conclusion] The research provided theoretical basis for analyzing climate variation in Suzhou under the background of global climate warming.展开更多
