A Communicative Approach to College English Grammar Teaching and Learning

In response to the misconception that Communicative Language Teaching means no teaching of grammar,it is argued that grammar is as important as traffic rules for safe and smooth traffic on the road.To achieve appropriate and effective communication,a communicative approach to college grammar teaching and learning is proposed.Both teachers and learners should change their attitudes toward and conceptions about grammar teaching and learning;additionally,teaching grammar in the company of reading and writing helps learners learn and acquire grammar in meaningful contexts.

FIRST LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AS A MODEL FOR SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: THE TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE APPROACH IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING

L1 and L2 acquisition, in some respects, are similar. Language development in children goes hand in hand with physical and cognitive development. Children learn their first language by imitation, but not always and not only by imitation. There seems to be some "innate capacities" that make children start to speak at the same time they do and in the way they do it. Adults learning a second language usually are controlled more by their motivation. But language input is important for both L1 and L2 acquisition. Though there are differences between CL1 and between CL2 and AL2, the way in which these learners acquire some of the grammatical morphemes is similar. This, together with some other evidence, shows that it is not only children who can acquire language. Adults can also acquire a language. But when adults acquire a language, they should also learn it. Some of the ways in which children acquire their language can be used as a model for L2 acquisition, even for Chinese students whose language is unrelated to English and whose culture is different. Learning the culture of the English-speaking countries will benefit the learning of the language. Like children, listening should also be well in advance of speaking in L2 acquisition. To train listening comprehension skills, Asher’s TPR approach proves more effective. TPR approach is at the moment limited to the beginning stage only. In order for students to gain all the five skills in a second language learning, namely, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and interpreting/translating, other methods should be used at the same time, or at later stages.

The Model of Open and Distance Learning for Teaching Indonesian Through Socio-Cultural Approach and Psychological Aspects to Students of Indonesian for Foreign

This study aims to find out the effect of the model of ODL （Open and Distance Learning） for teaching Indonesian for foreign and whether this model of ODL implements socio-cultural and psychological approaches. The students＇ learning of Indonesian for foreign is in so many aspects that it must be considered from both psychological aspects of students＇ language and cultural aspects. The research was carried out on foreign students＇ studying Indonesian language. The research method used action research. ODL model developed this concerning how the students are anxious in foreign language learning and language use in accordance with Indonesian culture. The model of ODL for teaching foreign Indonesian uses the Internet facilities such as email, Skype, VolP, Google Talk, circulating document with comments, chat, forum, CD, audio-video, stream media player, and e-learning system. Based on the results of this study which is that students study the model ODL for teaching Indonesian through socio-cultural approach and psychological aspects and students of Indonesian for foreign improve their ability to use the Indonesian language, students are able to converse fluently in Indonesian in accordance with Indonesian culture

Cultivation of Autonomous Learning Ability and Intercultural Communication Competence in Foreign Language Teaching

Learner Autonomy has been a hot topic in foreign language learning and teaching since 1960s,especially in relation to life-long skills.As the globalization develops,intercultural communication becomes more and more significant for college students.This essay attempts to explore main approaches to cultivate and improve students' autonomous learning ability and intercultural communication competence in foreign language teaching.

Investigating the Relationship Between Teaching Approach and Language Learning Motivation of College English Classrooms in China

The study was aimed at exploring the relationship between teaching approach and students'learning motivation.The participants were two college English teachers and their fixed group of students.The research lasted 16 weeks.The instruments used in the study were Attitude/Motivation Test Battery(AMTB) and classroom observation.Analyzing by the mean of the AM TB result,researchers got the popular tendencies of students'learning motivation level every four weeks.Comparing the change of students'learning motivation level and teacher participants'frequency of using the recommended teaching approach,this arti cle intends to achieve two purposes:1) Is students'learning motivation related to their teachers'teaching approach? 2) Among the approach recommended by literature,which works the best in the colleges in China?

Adaptive Learning with Large Variability of Teaching Signals for Neural Networks and Its Application to Motion Control of an Industrial Robot

Recently, various control methods represented by proportional-integral-derivative （PID） control are used for robotic control. To cope with the requirements for high response and precision, advanced feedforward controllers such as gravity compensator, Coriolis/centrifugal force compensator and friction compensators have been built in the controller. Generally, it causes heavy computational load when calculating the compensating value within a short sampling period. In this paper, integrated recurrent neural networks are applied as a feedforward controller for PUMA560 manipulator. The feedforward controller works instead of gravity and Coriolis/centrifugal force compensators. In the learning process of the neural network by using back propagation algorithm, the learning coefficient and gain of sigmoid function are tuned intuitively and empirically according to teaching signals. The tuning is complicated because it is being conducted by trial and error. Especially, when the scale of teaching signal is large, the problem becomes crucial. To cope with the problem which concerns the learning performance, a simple and adaptive learning technique for large scale teaching signals is proposed. The learning techniques and control effectiveness are evaluated through simulations using the dynamic model of PUMA560 manipulator.

The MOOC/SPOC Based"1+M+N"Multi-University Collaborative Teaching and Learning Mode:Practice and Experience

Since 2012, the MOOCs, the massive open online courses, have brought big influences on the higher education in the world. How to use MOOCs to help universities rather than bother them to improve their education level and quality becomes an important issue. In China, many universities have explored the new modes and approaches for MOOC/SPOC-based teaching and learning. Especially, the China MOOC Association on Computing Education(CMOOC association), established in 2014, has done a set of successful practice and achieved fruitful experiences on MOOC courses development and computer education reform. Based on the practical experiences, a MOOC/SPOC based "1+M+N" multi-university collaborative teaching and learning mode is presented, which is adapted to the real situation of Chinese university education. In the paper, the practices and experiences of CMOOC association are introduced, the MOOC/SPOC based "1+M+N" multi-university collaborative teaching and learning mode and its approaches are described. Finally, the suggestions for MOOCs development and applications are also presented.

Intercultural Education in a Technology-Enhanced Foreign Language Learning Environment Implementing the TPACK Approach:Challenges and Possibilities

In the plurilingual and multicultural contemporary international setting,the educational systems opt for successfully meeting as well as adapting to the rapid social,economic,and technological changes.Based on the premise that intercultural communicative competence holds a significant potential for foreign language instruction,focus should throw into combining teachers’intercultural knowledge with pedagogy and technology.The prospect of introducing intercultural material within the context of teaching scenarios in the curricula of a technology-enhanced foreign language learning environment where the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge(TPACK)approach is implemented,can positively contribute to the teaching process.Under this perspective,cultural and digitally competent teachers can create a framework which will enable learners to fully develop their interactive and linguistic skills and to effectively communicate in a foreign language promoting its social and multicultural dimension whatever the intercultural context.

Systemic-Functional Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching

Systemic-functional linguistics is one of the most influential linguistics schools in the recent 20 years.Though M.A.K.Halliday,the founder of Systemic-functional Linguistics,has not taken up any language teaching research by himself,he has been putting great emphasis on language teaching and language learning.With the increasing influence of Systemic-functional Linguistics,more and more applied linguists and foreign language teachers are trying to use his theories to solve the problems in language teaching and learning,and have achieved a lot.

Using Multimedia-Assisted Mode in the Course of English Teaching and Learning

With the development of the society & the economy,the pace of reformation & opening-up,and the modernization in China,English language,as a discipline,is being paid more and more attention to in the school.Good and high-standard English proficiency is required at present.With the influence of the traditional English teaching and learning mode,many students feel frustrated in the process of learning English.Therefore,the traditional English teaching and learning mode is greatly challenged.Based on the continuous development of the modern technology,the multimedia teaching and learning mode is widely applied.Multimedia,applied in the English teaching and learning process,create more authentic language environments,which enable the learners to communicate in English in real-life situations.Because both the authentic environment and communicative purposes are encouraged in modern EFL(English as a Foreign Language) teaching and learning classes,the combination of multimedia and basic teaching and learning skills will be a necessity.It is proved that the combination of the two is an effective way in the modern English language classes.

A Corpus-based Research of Data-driven English Vocabulary Teaching and Learning

With the extensive application of corpus in foreign language teaching,data-driven English vocabulary teaching has opened up a broad prospect,especially in curriculum design,classroom teaching methods and language testing,etc.Corpus presents a large number of authentic language materials in the form of data and context,which helps to attract the attention of language learners and strengthen their memory.This paper mainly discusses the application of corpus in vocabulary teaching from the aspects of word frequency,collocation,semantic prosody and so on-taking synonyms‘quite’,‘rather’,‘fairly’as an example.

An Action Research Project Aiming to Improve the Students' Reading Skills and Performance in an EFL Reading Class

As is universally acknowledged,educators have endeavored for ages to seek the more effective teaching method.Then action research has become a tool which is frequently applied to the teaching practice aiming to locate the teaching mode satisfactory to both teachers and students.The English majors are required to pass the TEM-4 exam when they are sophomores.It is essential for them to acquire the effective learning skills from reading classes.But it seems that vocabulary and grammar study—so called the traditional teaching method prove boring to students.Therefore,the tapestry approach is put forward.But the question is though the tapestry approach stimulates students’interest,can it can improve their English level?In order to figure out the result,two classes will be chosen in this research—one is controlled class,the other is experimental class.The traditional teaching method and the tapestry approach will be used in these two classes respectively.The experiment will last one semester.The students will be tested on two same TEM-4 papers at the beginning and at the end of the semester.The data will be collected for comparison.If the experimental class get the higher scores in the TEM-4 paper,it demonstrates that the tapestry approach is successful in balancing the need for interests and the need for English improvement.

Feedback iterative learning control for time-delay systems based on 2D analysis approach

This paper deals with the iterative learning control （ILC） design for multiple-input multiple-output （MIMO）,time-delay systems （TDS）.Two feedback ILC schemes are considered using the so-called two-dimensional （2D） analysis approach.It shows that continuous-discrete 2D Roesser systems can be developed to describe the entire learning dynamics of both ILC schemes,based on which necessary and sufficient conditions for their stability can be provided.A numerical example is included to validate the theoretical analysis.

Implementation of E-Learning System: Findings and Lessons Learned

This paper describes the implementation of the e-learning system at the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, National University of Mongolia. The paper includes in-house development of Edunet 1.0 e-learning system, comparative analysis on LMS, evaluation methodology, selection of e-learning systems, and comparative analysis on implementation of Edunet, Moodle and Canvas systems.

The Design and Implementation of New English Reading Teaching Model Under the Guidance of POA Theory

POA theory is a foreign language classroom teaching theoretical system with the Chinese characteristics,which was constructed by the foreign language education expert who named Wen Qiufang.The method takes output as the motivating target,introduces the teaching concept of"learning-using integrated principle",and adopts a new form of"motivating-enabling-assessing",which has reformed the mode of college foreign language classroom teaching.The traditional English reading teaching pays more attention to vocabulary interpretation,syntax analysis and reading skills,so it has been emerging a kind of"grammatical analysis"drawbacks.In view of this,the paper puts forward the thought of using"the production-oriented approach"to make innovation in the process of teaching design.The paper also discusses the application strategy of"production-oriented approach"in professional English reading teaching from three aspects.It requires designing the integral process of teaching,expanding a cooperative learning model and devising the specific tasks.Additionally,the paper points out that Professional English reading teaching should establish the learning task for students at the stage of"output-input".At the same time,the paper uses the development opportunity of"the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road"(B&R)as the starting point,which is combed with"cultural globalization"as the theme of reading teaching example.To activate the students'internal cognition and improve their reading ability,the author wants to explore effective strategies for establishing project in professional English reading teaching.The author has made a preliminary attempt in the guide of the method in the classroom,and has confirmed that it has practical feasibility.The teaching method is also applicable to professional English in military colleges and other languages teaching.It will help to promote the English teaching to realize the cultivation of students’comprehensive ability of using English,thinking ability,selflearning ability and comprehensive quality.

Implications of Task-based Teaching Approach for College English Teaching

Under the traditional mode of college English teaching, students are passive recipients of information in class, while teachers dominate the class most of time. Under such circumstances, grammar-translation approach and audio-lingual approach are mainly applied in teaching.
