The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate the performance of different plant species growing in different kinds of oil sands fine tailings, and to estimate the uptake of organic contaminants by plants from the oil sands fine tailings. In general, total hydrocarbon in the plant could be ranked(beginning with the highest)as:unweathered plant 4 tailings (UWT),Freeze Thawtailings(FT),weathered plant 4 tailings(WT),and consolidated tailings(CT) for the willow, poplar and cattails. For grass,CT amended with tailings sand and muskeg had the highest hydrocarbon level in the field treatment, however, other three kinds of tailings(FT,WT and UWT) had lower but similar to each other hydrocarbon levels. 展开更多

Sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB) play significant roles in anaerobic environments in oil sands mature fine tailings(MFTs). Hydrogen sulfide(H2S) is produced during the biological sulfate reduction process. The production of toxic H2S is one of the concerns because it may hinder the landscape remediation efficiency of oil sands tailing ponds. In present study, the in situ activity and the community structure of SRB in MFT and gypsum amended MFT in two settling columns were investigated. Combined techniques of H2S microsensor and dissimilatory sulfite reductase β-subunit(dsrB) genes-based real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qPCR) were applied to detect the in situ H2S and the abundance of SRB. A higher diversity of SRB and more H2S were observed in gypsum amended MFT than that in MFT, indicating a higher sulfate reduction activity in gypsum amended MFT; in addition, the activity of SRB varied as depth in both MFT and gypsum amended MFT: the deeper the more H2S produced. Long-term plans for tailings management can be assessed more wisely with the information provided in this study. 展开更多

There is a great demand for high performance rapid repair mortar(RRM)because of the wide use of cement concrete.Solid-waste-based sulfoaluminate cement(WSAC)is very suitable as a green cementitious material for repair materials because of its characteristics of high early-age strength and short setting time. However, the influence and optimization of various factors of WSAC-based RRM,such as water-to-RRM ratio,binder-to-sand ratio and additives,as well as the further solid waste replacement of aggregate, remain to be studied. This paper comprehensively studied the influence of the above factors on the performance of WSAC-based RRM and obtained a green high-performance RRM by optimizing these factors. The experimental results showed that the early and late strength of the obtained RRM is excellent, and the setting time and fluidity are appropriate, which reflected good mechanical properties and construction performance.Ordinary Portland cement(OPC)doping could not improve RRM strength. It was feasible to prepare RRM with gold tailing sand replacing part of the quartz sand. This paper provides data and a theoretical basis for the preparation of high-performance RRM based on solid waste, expanding the high value utilization of solid waste, which is conducive to the development of a low carbon society. 展开更多
