ASSESSMENT OF THE POEM2 MODEL FOR SIMULATING TROPICAL INTRASEASONAL OSCILLATION

The intraseasonal oscillation(ISO) of the atmosphere is closely related to weather and climate systems and is also an important aspect of extended numerical weather forecast research. This phenomenon is significant in tropical regions and is one of the key indices for assessing the simulation capability of a climate model. To better evaluate numerical model simulations of the tropical ISO using the 10-year historic data calculated by the POEM2 climate system model developed by the University of Hawaii in the U.S., we utilized the methods of variance and power spectral analysis to compare and assess the simulation ability of this model for the ISO in tropical regions. Our results showed that the simulated variance results for the 850 h Pa zonal wind and outgoing long-wave radiation(OLR) by POEM2 are overall consistent with the observed distribution pattern, and the simulated variance is relatively larger than the observed in the North Indian Ocean and West Pacific regions. With respect to the summer model, the winter model can better simulate the eastward propagation motion of the Madden-Julian oscillation(MJO) and the 850 h Pa zonal wind. In comparison, the summer model can better simulate the northward propagation motion of MJO and atmospheric precipitation than the winter model. The eastward propagation speed of the simulated MJO signal is faster in the model than in the observation, and the high frequency region for the power spectra of meteorological element anomalies are concentrated in wavenumber 2-3 in the simulation and in wavenumber 1-2 in the observation. The multivariate combined empirical orthogonal function(EOF) results showed that this model can simulate the relationship between high-low level wind distributions and precipitation over the East Indian Ocean and the West Pacific, but the simulated signal is weaker than the observed. The lagging correlation of time coefficients between the first two EOFs from observation and simulation shows a similar cycle. Thus, these results indicate that in the future, the POEM2 climate system model needs to optimize the involved physical processes and parameterization scheme, strengthen the dynamic description of the mixed Rossby gravity wave, and improve the simulated ability of wavenumber 1.

Therefore, It ventures to explore an effective way for Yuanqu poems translation from the perspective of relevance theory, by analyzing the three poems in An English Translation of 200 Yuanqu Poems.

On Rhyme and Symmetry in the Translation of Tang Poetry:A Case Study of Xu Yuanchong’s English Translation of 300 Tang Poems

Ancient poetry represents historical and cultural legacies accumulated by the Chinese nation for thousands of years and underpins the strong cultural confidence of the Chinese people.Tang poetry distinguishes itself from other literary works with its beautiful rhyme and symmetry.Previous studies of English translations of Tang poetry mostly focused on appreciation,analysis,and critics of different translation versions.Few researchers have delved into the specific translation methods for achieving the rhyming and symmetrical effects of Tang poetry in the target text.This paper examined Professor Xu Yuanchong’s English translation of 300 Tang Poems as the research object,and elaborated on how to retain the rhyming and symmetrical effects of Tang poems.This paper also summarized some practical methods that can be applied to translating Tang poems.Rhyming can be realized by the addition of end rhyme words and changes in word or line order.Symmetry can be achieved by the omission of a modifier or predicate,the addition of function words,changes in word order,or parallelism with the original sentence structure.

POEMS syndrome characterized by peripheral neuropathy as the first symptom:a rare case report

POEMS(Polyneuropathy,Organomegaly,Endocrinopathy,M-Protein and Skin Changes)syndrome is a rare multi-system disease associated with plasma cell abnormality.The etiology and pathogenesis of POEMS syndrome are unclear.Up to 11%-30%of POEMS patients have documented clonal plasma cell disorder with idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease(iMCD)histology.We report a case of POEMS syndrome characterized by plasma cell iMCD in a 64-year-old Asian woman.She was admitted with complaints of numbness and pain in both legs for the last one year.Over the last two months,she developed symptoms associated with respiratory,digestive,and endocrine system disorders.Finally,the POEMS syndrome was diagnosed by lymph node biopsy,electromyography,vascular endothelial growth factor,serum immunofixation electrophoresis,and other auxiliary examinations.POEMS syndrome lacks a standard treatment.This study contributes to providing a reference value for the diagnosis and treatment of this rare disease.

Translations of Chrysanthemum Poems in Dreams of Red Mansion from the Perspective of Roger T·Bell’s Cognitive Schema—based on Yang’s and Hawkes’s editions

The transability of poems has been a heated debate.Actually,there is no problem in transforming one language to anoth⁃er.However,the successful transformation rests with that the translation can get the identical aesthetics effect of source texts.It is no doubt that translation process plays a vital role.This paper will analyze and study the translations of chrysanthemum poems in Dreams of Red Mansion from the perspective of Roger T·Bell’s cognitive schema,based on two editions,the translation of Yang Xianyi and Yang Gladys and the translation of David Hawkes.The analysis gives rises a conclusion that the poetic beauty(the liter⁃ary grace containing in poems),disposition(the personality hiding behind poems)and omen(the destiny implying in poems)can be interactively processed in syntactic,semantic and pragmatic levels if the content and meaning of source text and target text can be transmitted equally.
