The Application of ChatGPT in Chinese as a Second Language Teaching:A Case Study of Instructional Design for Non-Chinese-Speaking Students in Hong Kong

This study explores the potential application of ChatGPT in designing customized instructional plans for Chinese as a Second Language(CSL)teaching,focusing on non-Chinese-speaking(NCS)students in Hong Kong.Through two rounds of comparative experiments,the study evaluates the effectiveness of AI-generated instructional designs against expert-designed versions.Results reveal that while initial ChatGPT designs initially have limitations,advanced versions demonstrate significant potential in supporting teachers with task-based language teaching(TBLT).These designs provide practical,culturally relevant tasks tailored to diverse learners,enhancing instructional efficiency and learner engagement.Furthermore,ChatGPT’s accessibility offers opportunities to reduce educational disparities by supporting teachers in resource-limited contexts,thereby addressing inequities in instructional quality.The study concludes that,while AI cannot replace teachers,ChatGPT can serve as a valuable supplementary tool,complementing human expertise in culturally and linguistically complex L2 teaching.It underscores the importance of ethical considerations and the critical role of teachers in integrating AI technology effectively to maximize its benefits in education.

An Empirical Analysis of Learning and Teaching English as a Second Language： The Chinese Perspective

This research venture investigates the trends and motives behind the English learning as a second language. The author has used the Chinese binoculars to probe into the phenomenon of English learning and teaching. English language has become an international tool of communication and business. Professional and students at China's Mainland have been learning English since long but this trend has been increased in the recent years due to the wave of globalization and also owing to the enormous emerging economy of China. Internationalization of education and the quest of knowing the culture and civilizations have spurred the need for English learning. The authors have performed a questionnaire based research with the sample of 130 university students learning Chinese at different English learning institutes at Xi＇an, Shanxi, China. The analysis of the findings in this research highlights the reasons behind the growing trends of English learning and also describes the teaching methodology for effective language teaching in the Chinese perspective.

Applying Nearpod to the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Class to Enhance Interactions and Collaborations in the Secondary Schools

The quick spread of the epidemic since 2019 together with fast advancing of technology has exposed teachers to online education,including Teaching Chinese as a Second Language(TCSL)classrooms.Some Chinese as a Second Language(CSL)teachers were reluctant to utilize technology tools in their teaching due to the lack of technological knowledge.Thus,this study designed a CSL curriculum with the lens of the TPACK framework(Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge).Nearpod was specifically adopted as a web-based technology tool to support the teaching Chinese language due to its powerful functions provided.Nearpod allows teachers to design interactive activities in multiple ways to facilitate interactions and collaboration in the CSL learning process.This paper aimed to help Chinese teachers improve their understanding of how to effectively integrate technology into CSL teaching.Chinese teachers will develop a deeper comprehension of distance teaching from the perspectives of technology,pedagogy,and content knowledge,enhance students’deeper learning,and promote interaction and collaboration in L2 class.The effective use of the technology can develop language skills in a meaningful context knowledge with the guidance of pedagogical content knowledge.

Research on the Evaluation Method of Teaching Quality of Chinese as a Foreign Language Based on Immersion Teaching

With the development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the teaching level of teachers of Chinese as a foreign language is constantly improving. Teachers of Chinese as a foreign language are the messengers of Chinese culture and represent the image of China. Therefore, the quality of teaching Chinese as a foreign language teachers plays a vital role in the quality of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Immersion teaching method is a relatively successful teaching method in the field of foreign bilingual teaching. It opens a new door for teaching Chinese as a foreign language and plays an important role in improving students' ability to use Chinese. This paper comprehensively evaluates the teaching of Chinese as a whole based on immersive teaching, and calculates the data after evaluation of the evaluation index system to ensure the scientific and accurate evaluation results. Finally, it is proposed that the countermeasures should be improved from the three aspects of classroom teaching, the quality of Chinese teachers and the overall quality of the team of Chinese as a foreign language.

The Implementation and Evaluation of Training Course for Chinese as Second Language E-Teacher

In this study, we made references to past literatures and developed an e-learning training program for CSL （Chinese as a Second Language） teachers. The class was held from July to August, 2010, in Chinese Culture University （Taiwan）, and we designed a performance-evaluation questionnaire with the Delphi method. Three months after the training program was completed, the questionnaire was given to the 30 students of the class, and they were asked to answer questions regarding their use of e-learning in the actual practice. We also asked 5 teachers to conduct experimental e-learning for us to video-record and observe. This effort allows us to discuss the use of e-learning among CSL teachers in Taiwan, come up with a conclusion and suggestions, and use the findings as references for course-planning and policies or research regarding the digital learning of Chinese.

Research on the Application of Chinese-Style Songs in the Field of Chinese Second Language Teaching

In recent years,traditional Chinese culture has been continuously revived,integrated into the times and entered people’s daily lives.Chinese-style songs,as a combination of traditional cultural connotations and emerging song forms,have gradually emerged on the music stage in China and even around the world.In the field of teaching Chinese as a second language,the research on teaching Chinese songs has received increasing attention.This article combines the theory of the association between music and language to summarize the research results of Chinese-style songs and their application in the field of teaching Chinese as a second language in the past 30 years.The current research problems are discussed,and suggestions are proposed in order to provide some reference value for teaching Chinese as a second language.

Implicit Learning and Explicit Learning in the Context of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language By Analyzing the Textbook Kuaile Hanyu

With the rising status of China in the world in the economic, political and cultural aspects, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language （TCFL） is becoming more and more prevalent across the world. Britain is the country where the Chinese is taught and learnt earlier than other Western countries. Take the students in Confucius Institute of Newcastle University in UK for example, due to the students＇ different backgrounds and also different ages and language foundations, whether the Chinese teaching materials can meet their motivations and needs is a problem worth further investigation by Chinese language teachers. Therefore, concerning the leamers＇ different ages and cognitive ability, this paper aims to analyze the textbook named Kuaile Hanyu （Happy Chinese） in terms of its advantages and disadvantages, in hope to evaluate whether it is appropriate to different learners and propose a few suggestions for the Chinese materials in the future. Simultaneously, fi＇om perspective of implicit learning and explicit learning, a tentative study is carried out on the influence of implicit and explicit leaming in TCFL context.

On the Roles of Cultural and Artistic Features of Dialects in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

The Past and Present of Chinese Language Teaching in Ireland

China’s booming economy is indeed one of the main reasons for the popularity of learning Chinese as a foreign language(henceforth CFL).With this growing interest in CFL,Ireland is likely to be behind global trends as Chinese is not yet included as a State-examined subject at any level in the Irish schooling system.Chinese language teaching(henceforth CLT)began to develop significantly in formal UK schooling during 2004-2005(Zhang&Li,2010),whereas the earliest occurrence of CLT seen in the Irish education system was in 2006-2007 when two Confucius Institutes were set up in Ireland.During this time,Mandarin Chinese was also introduced first as a subject and later as a degree in some higher education institutions in Ireland.The current study reviews the past and present of CLT in Ireland at second and tertiary level.This information,together with survey data collected among approximately 3,700 students learning CFL in Irish schools as a subject not examined by the State,provides recommendations for a future State-examined CFL course to be introduced to Irish secondary schools.These recommendations include items such as contact hours,tasks,and content to be implemented in the classroom.Further recommendations are also supplied in relation to the bridging of secondary and tertiary-level CLT.These recommendations come in light of former Irish Minister for Education Richard Bruton's announcement that Chinese will be taught on the State-examined school curriculum as part of the Languages Connect strategy plan.

The Implications of Krashen’s Second Language Acquisition Theory on College English Teaching

Krashen's second language acquisition theory consists of language input theory,emotion filtering theory and languageoutput theory.In order to apply Krashen's second language acquisition theory to college English teaching,it is suggested to commence from the acquisition and learning theories to optimize the teaching environment and methods.On the basis of language input theory,emotional filtering theory and language output theory,English input quality could be improved,students'learning interests could be stimulated and English practical teaching could be accelerated respectively.

Analysis of Pragmatic Failures and Strategies for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Cross-cultural communication has become an essential course for international students.As foreign students have different cultural backgrounds and languages,pragmatic failures are inevitable for them when communicating in Chinese,thus resulting in unpleasant communication.In order to effectively reduce pragmatic failures,it is necessary to analyze the problems that arise in the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and determine the causes.This research is separated into three aspects.Firstly,with the support of the theory of pragmatics and by analyzing the life and learning of foreign students,it can be appreciated that the pragmatic failures of foreign students in using Chinese for communication are very much detailed in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language[1].Secondly,after arranging and analyzing these corpora,the reasons for the pragmatic failures of foreign students are determined.Finally,aiming at the causes of pragmatic failures,corresponding countermeasures and teaching suggestions are proposed.The conclusion drawn from this research is that pragmatic failures occur due to various factors,some of which are essential factors that cannot be changed.This requires effort from both Chinese language teachers and students in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language to lessen the occurrence of pragmatic failures.
