Canadian University Professors'Perceptions of the Challenges and Support to Engage in Research

Research has been an important responsibility for university professors. Although there has been an increased demand for research, few studies have been conducted directly with university professors to obtain their perceptions of the challenges the increased focus on research have presented. This study employed a qualitative methodology to inquire into the change of work life bought about by the increased demand for research, and the strategies professors have adopted to balance their teaching, research and service. It also inquired into the barriers to conducting research, and effective support strategies. Some barriers and support identified in this study were in accordance with what previous studies have identified. Perhaps because the professors interviewed were all tenured, they noted that the increased demand for research had not significantly changed their work life. Strategies they used to help them meet the demands for research included, but were not limited to, integrating their teaching and research, and collaborating with others on research projects. Barriers to research included bureaucratic constraints, newness to research, lack of time, and lack of funding.

You Complying with the school＇s education purpose of training applied talents, in colleges and universities, teaching-oriented teaching team should be read in conjunction with the construction of its evaluating index system as well as the improvement of the operation quality of teaching efficiency. In view of vague characteristic of evaluation, this paper uses analytic hierarchy process to carry on the fuzzy and synthetic appraisal for operation quality of teaching-oriented teaching teams in colleges and universities, reasonably ascertaining the weights of the evaluation indexes and improving the objectivity and accuracy of evaluation.

Obituary＂ Professor Ying-Xiang Wang （1938-2016）

It is with great sadness that I share the sorrowful news that mammalogy and wildlife science lost a respected scientist, patient teacher, and wonderful mentor on 10 February, 2016, when Professor Ying-Xiang Wang died in Kunming, Yunnan Province, due to heart failure following a lung infection. He is survived by his wife Professor Rui-Qing Liu, daughter Li Wang, son Tao Wang, daughter-in-law Qing Sun and granddaughter Jun-Qi Wang.

Professor Frederic L. Pellet

Professor Pellet received his undergraduate education in Civil Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Geneva, Switzerland in 1981. Then, after two years spent to work as an engineer in the dams industry, he pursued graduate studies in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Grenoble, France, where he got his Master degree in 1986. At this point of his career he got the opportunity to spend a year as a research associate at the University of Sherbrooke, Canada.

In memory of professor Weixing Wan

On May 20,2020,Professor Weixing Wan of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences(IGGCAS),a world renowned space scientist and planetary physicist,passed away at age of 62.Prof.Wan was an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS).He served as a member of the 13th National People's Congress Standing Committee,and of the 14th Central Committee of Jiusan Society.He also served as the chief scientist of China's first Mars exploration mission,Tianwen-1,and the director of the Key Laboratory of Earth and Planetary Physics of the CAS.His passing is a great loss to the science community.This article was especially written in memory of him.

He began hisscientific career at the Institute of Physics, Leningrad Universityin 1984. After commencing his Ph.D. （Physics ＆ Mathematics） in1987, he continued his work as a researcher of Pacific OceanologicalInstitute, Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences（FEBRAS）, Vladivostok, Russia, from 1987 to 1991.
