Emergency Care for Children and Adolescents after Sexual Violence, in Brazil’s Capital, Brasilia

Objective: Sexual violence affects women of all ages but, more commonly, children and adolescents. This study aimed to identify the extent to which services are being provided at the hospitals responsible for the emergency care of children and adolescents who have suffered sexual violence and to determine whether there is any difference in the provision of such services as a function of the victim’s age. Method: This cross-sectional study investigated differences in the care received by female children and adolescents who are victims of sexual violence in a capital city, comparing the treatment given to girls under 15 with that given to adolescents of 15 to 19 years of age. The data were extracted from the State Department of Health database between 01/01/2012 and 31/12/2016. Results: Children under 15 were much less likely to receive prophylaxis against HIV, sexually transmitted infections and hepatitis B, with the number of adolescent girls treated adequately corresponding to between twice and almost three times the number of children treated prophylactically. Only 10% of girls under 15 received emergency contraception. Conclusion: The lack of standard care established by the Ministry of Health highlights the need for urgent debates both locally and probably throughout the country, as the situation may be similar in other regions of the country.

Muscle Mass Is Associated with Depression in Adolescents and Young Adults

Background and Aims: The study aims to explore the association between body composition and depression in adolescents and young adults. Methods: A random cluster sampling method was used to select 41 age-matched indi-viduals (aged 11 - 30) as a non-depressive control group. The Department of Psychology at the Affiliated Hospital of Youjiang Medical University for Na-tionalities recruited 27 depressive patients within the same age range. Bioelec-trical impedance analysis measured body composition, while SCL-90, SAS, and SDS were employed for depression diagnosis. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between body composition and de-pression scores. Results: The Depression Group exhibited higher levels of fat mass (p Conclusion: Depression is associated with age, gender, and muscle mass in adolescents and young people. Proper exercise and a healthy diet can increase muscle mass, thereby reducing fat mass and, as a result, reducing the prevalence of depression.

Risk factors and strategies for prevention of depression, anxiety and eating disorders among adolescents during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic: a review

The purpose of this review is to identify prevalent trends and risk factors in depression,anxiety,and eating disorders in the adolescent population in the post coronavirus disease 2019(COvID-19)scenario.We examined the literature published on adolescent mental health since the COVID-19 pandemic.We chose to summarize studies published from 2019 to 2022,using bibliographic search tools.We developed criteria for selecting articles for our review using diagnostic indicators and keywords.Mental health conditions such as depression,anxiety and eating disorders are commonly prevalent in this population and have shown increasing rates in the past three years.Some risk factors associated with these diagnoses include reduction in social interaction,increased workloads,routine shifts,sleep quality,social media usage and parental involvement.Routines,sleep cycles,physical activity,and social media should all be considered as a part of prevention in this population.Approaches that seem to be successful include maintaining social ties and avoiding negative social media usage with harmful content.Increased global public awareness,as well as parental awareness,through media campaigns,is critical to slowing the spread of mental health challenges in adolescents and teenagers in the post-COvID-19 era.

COVID-19 vaccine uptake and its determinants among teenagers and their parents in Zhejiang, China: An online cross-sectional study

Objective:To examine COVID-19 vaccine uptake and its determinants among teenagers and their parents in Zhejiang,China.Methods:An online cross-sectional study was conducted among parents of teenagers in Zhejiang,China from May 1 to 31,2022.Data were interpreted via univariate and multivariate analyses using the statistical package for the social sciences(SPSS)program.Results:A total of 11115(96.11%)participants and 11449(99.00%)of their children in Zhejiang,China had been vaccinated against COVID-19.Children whose parents did not receive COVID-19 vaccination were 19 times(aOR 18.96,95%CI 12.36-29.08)more likely to be unvaccinated than their counterparts.In addition,children with no previous influenza vaccination,those whose parents doubted the COVID-19 vaccine’s safety or effectiveness,were 6.11 times(aOR 6.11,95%CI 2.80-13.34),8.27 times(aOR 8.27,95%CI 5.33-12.83),and 2.69 times(aOR 2.69,95%CI 1.11-6.50)more likely to be unvaccinated than their counterparts,respectively.COVID-19 vaccine uptake varied between different sociodemographic groups.However,the odds of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine decreased as age and education level increased.The main refusal reasons claimed by participants were that they had medical conditions that may not qualify them for vaccination(53.78%),followed by safety concerns about the vaccine(13.56%),not knowing where to get vaccinated(6.44%),and concerns about fertility issues(5.56%).Conclusions:Despite a highly encouraging level of COVID-19 vaccine uptake in Zhejiang,China,the elderly and highly educated people had lower COVID-19 vaccine uptake.It is suggested that tailored health education strategies should be taken to increase the COVID-19 vaccine uptake in such groups.Furthermore,with vaccination rates at such a high level,the pandemic is still ongoing,and public confidence in vaccines may decline.Thus,sufficient evidence-based information regarding COVID-19 vaccines should be provided to the public.

Subacute osteomyelitis due to Staphylococcus caprae in a teenager:A case report and review of the literature

BACKGROUND Staphylococcus caprae(S.caprae)is a human commensal bacterium which can be detected in the nose,nails,and skin.It can be responsible for heterogeneous infections such as bacteremia,endocarditis,pneumonia,acute otitis externa,peritonitis,and urinary tract infections.Bone and joint infections due to S.caprae have also been reported,but most of them resulted from the infection of orthopedic devices,especially joint prostheses and internal osteosynthesis devices.Rare cases of primary osteoarticular infections caused by S.caprae have been described,including osteitis,arthritis,or spondylodiscitis.CASE SUMMARY We report an unusual case of subacute osteomyelitis in a toe phalanx caused by S.caprae in a 14.5-year-old girl.CONCLUSION Subacute S.caprae osteomyelitis is a little-known and probably underestimated community-acquired infectious disease.This microorganism’s pathogenicity should be seen as more than a classic nosocomial orthopedic device infection.

Evaluation of childhood developing via optical coherence tomography-angiography in Qamdo,Tibet,China:A prospective cross-sectional,school-based study

BACKGROUND Optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)is a new and reliable machine used to evaluate retinal structure and macular perfusion in children.The use of OCTA under bad condition such as high altitude,low atmospheric oxygen,and low humidity,in children is rarely.AIM To quantify the macular micro-vasculature in healthy children of various ages using OCTA in Qamdo.METHODS Design:Prospective cross-sectional,school-based study.Three hundred and fortyseven normal students from 9 schools in 4 different areas in Qamdo were included.OCTA was performed on a 3 mm×3 mm area centered on the macular region and macular cube 512×128 showed details in macular.Early treatment of diabetic retinopathy study Vessel Flow Density(VD)of the macular central vascular plexus density(CVD),inner vascular plexus density(IVD),full vascular plexus density(FVD),and the size of the foveal avascular zone(FAZ)were measured.All these results corrected by t/s=3.382×0.01306×(axial length-1.82).The differences were compared among various ages,sexes and living environments.RESULTS The mean FAZ area in all eyes was 0.27 mm^(2)±0.12 mm^(2).The mean foveal thickness(MFT)in the macular cube was 227.64μm±23.51μm.Compared with girls,boys had a lager FAZ(P=0.0029).Among the different age groups,MFT(P<0.001)and FVD(P<0.0001),IVD(P<0.0001),and CVD(P=0.0050)increased with age.FAZ areas were not correlated with age(P=0.8853)or others(MFT,area).CONCLUSION OCTA can use to evaluate macular perfusion in children.Our data bridge the gap between structural OCT and perfusion density in children in high altitude.Even though these were not a longitudinal study,it may provide us with hints about retina development during puberty and clinical implications of OCTA in children.

Research on the Application of Juvenile Psychological Development and Sports Acquisition Law System in Physical Education Teaching

Sexual Orientation and Associated Factors among Adolescents in Cameroonian Cities—Factors Associated with Sexual Orientation in Adolescents

Introduction: Over time, new sexual practices other than the common ones are frequently described. This work aimed to determine the sexual orientation and its associated factors among adolescents attending school in two big cities in Cameroon. Methodology: A cross-sectional study with prospective data collection took place from November 2021 to April 2022 in eight secondary schools (four in Yaoundé and four in Douala). We conducted non-probability, consecutive sampling on school-going, sexually active adolescents between the ages of 14 and 19 years. A self-administered questionnaire to students was used to study their sexual orientations and practices. Univariate and multivariate analyses made it possible to find the associated factors using the chi-square test. Results: We included 1274 adolescents with an average age of 18 years;majority were boys (54.8%) for a sex ratio of 1.21. Most (49.7%) were from two-parent families. Cisgender was the most common self-gender identity (89.6%). The main sexual orientation was heterosexuality (82.3%), followed by bisexuality (9.7%) and homosexuality (8%). The average age at first sexual intercourse (coitarche) was 15 years and the coitarche was consenting in 84.1%. Sexual practices included: kissing (94.7%), fondling (93.4%), vaginal penetration (80.6%), oral sex (40.4%), masturbation (22.8%), fisting (18.4%), and anal penetrations (17.5%). The majority of sexual intercourse acts (55.8%) took place without protection;24.6% of adolescents practiced them with a person of the same sex and 18.4% with several others simultaneously. The factors associated with heterosexuality were age ≤17 years (aOR: 2.44 [1.36 - 4.40];p = 0.003), self-identification opposite to primary sexual characteristics (aOR: 12.05 [5.13 - 28.29];p 0.001), absence of consent during the first coitus (aOR: 7.09 [3.61 - 13.93];p 0.001) and a history of sexual intercourse with a person of the same sex (aOR: 94.17 [43.36 - 183.39];p 0.001). Conclusion: Although most adolescents are heterosexual in the school environment, the authors raise the importance of providing guidance in the aspect of sexual orientation particularly on the psychological and behavioral level considering age, self-gender identity, sexual consent, and using protection during the sexual experience.

Correlation of EEG power atlas and P300 with depressive episode severity in adolescents hospitalized for the first time

Objective:To investigate the relationship between the changes of electroencephalogram(EEG)power spectrum,P300 latency and amplitude at different frequency bands and the severity of depressive episode in adolescents who were hospitalized for the first time.Methods:A retrospective study was conducted on 126 adolescent patients with depressive episodes who were hospitalized for the first time in the Department of Children and Adolescents of Yunnan Psychiatric Hospital from January 2022 to August 2023.According to Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HAMD),the patients were divided into three groups:mild depression group(43 cases),moderate depression group(42 cases)and severe depression group(41 cases).The distribution of the 16-lead power spectrum of α,θ,and δ waves in EEG,as well as the latency and amplitude of P300,were compared among the three groups.The association between adolescent depression and its severity was analyzed.Results:(1)The EEG power distribution of the three groups was different in the frequency bands of α,θ and δ(P<0.05).There were differences in the α,θ,and δ frequency bands between mild and moderate as well as severe depressive episodes,and between moderate and severe depressive episodes in the θ and δ frequency bands.(2)P300,N2 latency and P300 amplitude:There were significant differences among the three groups(P<0.05).(3)δFP1,θF3,θC4,P300 latency and N2 latency were positively correlated with the degree of depression;P300 amplitude andα02 were negatively correlated with the degree of depression.(4)The receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC)area of P300 amplitude was 0.932,and the area under the curve ofα02 was 0.776.Conclusion:The combination of resting EEG power and P300 can be used as a biomarker to assess the severity of a depressive episode in adolescents who are hospitalized for the first time and provide a new strategy for treatment.

The Prevalence Outcome and Associated Factors of Teenage Pregnancy in the Bamenda Health District

Teenage pregnancy is a common public health problem worldwide because teenagers in general are ill-prepared to deal with the burden of pregnancy. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest burden of teenage pregnancy precisely in the west and central Africa;in Cameroon, about 12% of all births are to teenage mothers. Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death among girls aged 15 to 19. Though the trend of teenage pregnancy tends to decrease in most parts of the world, this is not the case in our setting. The main aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, outcomes and the associated factors of teenage pregnancy in the Bamenda Health District (BHD). Materials and Method: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional descriptive and analytic study carried out at the maternity and postnatal units of the Bamenda Regional Hospital and the Nkwen Medicalised Health Center. A consecutive non-probabilistic sampling technique was used to recruit participants. A pretested questionnaire was used to collect information from the participant. Data was analysed using the software SPSS version 23. Bivariate logistic regression was used to test for associations. Statistical significance was set at p-value less than 0.05. Result: A total of 325 participants were recruited of which 44 were teenagers. The mean age of the participants was 25.02 ± 0.257 years. The mean age of teenagers was 17.49 ± 0.63 years, and mean adult age was 28.43 ± 5.64 years. The youngest participant was 15 years. Teenagers were significantly more likely to prematurity (OR = 0.14;95% CI = 0.06 - 0.31;PV = 0.001), Low birth weight among teenagers (OR = 0.077;95% CI = 0.03 - 0.21;PV = 0.001), Still birth;OR = 0.07;95% CI = 0.01 - 0.86;PV = 0.03) Neonatal admission also high among teenagers (OR = 0.172, 95% CI = 0.08 - 0.39, PV = 0.001) compared to the babies of their adult counterpart. The rate of caesarean section and episiotomy was high among adult deliveries (21.7%). Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of teenage pregnancy (13.54%) in the Bamenda Health District. prematurity was independently associated with teenage pregnancy. perineal tears were the most common maternal outcome of teenage pregnancy. Adolescents/teenagers in rural areas, having a low level of income, and low level of education were associated with high level of teenage pregnancy.

Research on the Application of Intelligent Bionic Robot Horse in Juvenile Equestrian Teaching Case Study: Beijing Chaoyang Park Youth Equestrian Center

Research purposes:in this study,the intelligent bionic robotic horse is introduced into the equestrian teaching for teenagers,compared with the traditional teaching mode of using real horses.This research aims to explore the effectiveness of using intelligent bionic robotic horse in equestrian teaching for teenagers,as well as to promote the further development of equestrian teaching for teenagers in China,and to promote the introduction of new technology into the equestrian teaching area in the age of internet.Research methods:the methods used were literature method;mathematical statistics;interviewing the equestrian coaches who participated in the experiment;experimental method.The intelligent bionic robotic horse used in this research is the GETTAEN intelligent bionic robotic horse produced by Joy Game Technology Co.,Ltd.The bionic robotic horse is equipped with Internet technology,and the course is supervised and produced by senior coaches of China Equestrian Team.It also includes multiple operation modes.In this study,40 amateur students in Beijing Chaoyang Park Youth Equestrian Center were selected as the experimental subjects.Students will spend 40 h on studying how to ride a horse.Twenty(20)students in the experimental group,they are accommodated with 20 h of bionic robotic horse courses and 20 h of real horse course;20 students in the control group were taught in the traditional teaching mode with 40 h of real horse courses.Results:(1)in horseback physical fitness test,the average value of the control group was 101.9 s;325.6 s in the experimental group.Independent sample T test p<0.05 has significant difference,the horseback physical performance in experimental group is better than the control group.(2)in horseback physical balance test,the average value of the control group was 3.75,and the average value of the experimental group was 7.1.Independent sample T test p<0.05 has significant difference,the horseback physical balance test results in experimental group have significant difference,and the experimental group is better than the control group.(3)The interview method was used to interview the equestrian coaches who participated in the experiment,coaches think that the bionic robotic horse can speed up the learning progress and has a strong technical consolidation,especially for teaching amateurs;but for the time being,it cannot meet the training and improvement target of the actual horse control ability and the ability to grasp the route,and such experience is not real and good enough for senior students.Conclusion:using real horse and intelligent bionic robotic horse combined,one can improve the teaching effectiveness and promote students’adaptation to horseback and technical mastery.But for the time being,it is only suitable for students with weak foundation or zero foundation.The capability of intelligent bionic robotic horse needs to be strengthened,and technological innovation is needed to adapt to all kinds of students.

Application Effect of Chinese Medicine Rehabilitation in the Treatment of Adolescent Ankle Sports Injuries

Objective:To analyze the clinical effect of traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation in treating adolescent ankle sports injuries.Methods:From December 2020 to December 2022,adolescent patients with ankle joint sports injuries admitted to our hospital were selected as observation objects,and 67 patients were divided into a control group(n=33,routine rehabilitation treatment)and an experimental group(n=34,traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation treatment)according to the computer grouping method.Compare the treatment results.Results:(i)The treatment received in the experimental group had an efficacy of 94.11%,which was higher than that of the control group(75.75%),and statistical significance was established(P<0.05).(ii)Before treatment,there was no difference in ankle joint pain,ankle joint activity,and ankle joint function scores between the control group and the experimental group(P>0.05);after treatment,the ankle joint pain,ankle joint activity,and ankle joint function scores in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.05).(iii)The experimental group had higher scores on physiological function,physiological function,physical pain,general health status,energy,social function,emotional function,and mental health compared to the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion:Traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation is effective in treating ankle injuries caused by sports in adolescents and improve their quality of life.Therefore,it should be popularized.
