The tensile strength at the rock-concrete interface is one of the crucial factors controlling the failure mechanisms of structures, such as concrete gravity dams.Despite the critical importance of the failure mechanism and tensile strength of rock-concrete interfaces, understanding of these factors remains very limited. This study investigated the tensile strength and fracturing processes at rock-mortar interfaces subjected to direct and indirect tensile loadings.Digital image correlation(DIC)and acoustic emission(AE)techniques were used to monitor the failure mechanisms of specimens subjected to direct tension and indirect loading(Brazilian tests). The results indicated that the direct tensile strength of the rock-mortar specimens was lower than their indirect tensile strength, with a direct/indirect tensile strength ratio of 65%.DIC strain field data and moment tensor inversions(MTI)of AE events indicated that a significant number of shear microcracks occurred in the specimens subjected to the Brazilian test. The presence of these shear microcracks, which require more energy to break, resulted in a higher tensile strength during the Brazilian tests. In contrast, microcracks were predominantly tensile in specimens subjected to direct tension, leading to a lower tensile strength.Spatiotemporal monitoring of the cracking processes in the rock-mortar interfaces revealed that they show AE precursors before failure under the Brazilian test, whereas they show a minimal number of AE events before failure under direct tension.Due to different microcracking mechanisms, specimens tested under Brazilian tests showed lower roughness with flatter fracture surfaces than those tested under direct tension with jagged and rough fracture surfaces. The results of this study shed light on better understanding the micromechanics of damage in the rock-concrete interfaces for a safer design of engineering structures. 展开更多

Exploitation of oxygen evolution reaction(OER)and urea oxidation reaction(UOR)catalysts with high activity and stability at large current density is a major challenge for energy-saving H_(2) production in water electrolysis.Herein,we use the pyridinic-N doping carbon layers coupled with tensile strain of FeNi alloy activated by NiFe_(2)O_(4)(FeNi/NiFe_(2)O_(4)@NC)for efficiently increasing the performance of water and urea oxidation.Due to the tensile strain effect on FeNi/NiFe_(2)O_(4)@NC,it provides a favorable modulation on the electronic properties of the active center, thus enabling amazing OER(η_(100)=196 mV)and UOR(E_(10)=1.32 V)intrinsic activity.Besides, the carbon-coated layers can be used as armor to prevent FeNi alloy from being corroded by the electrolyte for enhancing the OER/UOR stability at large current density, showing high industrial practicability. This work thus provides a simple way to prepare high-efficiency catalyst for activating water and urea oxidation. 展开更多

The microstructure characteristics and strengthening mechanism of Inconel738LC(IN-738LC) alloy prepared by using induction-assisted directed energy deposition(IDED) were elucidated through the investigation of samples subjected to IDED under 1050℃ preheating with and without hot isostatic pressing(HIP,1190℃,105 MPa,and 3 h).Results show that the as-deposited sample mainly consisted of epitaxial columnar crystals and inhomogeneously distributed γ’ phases in interdendritic and dendritic core regions. After HIP,grain morphology changed negligibly, whereas the size of the γ’ phase became increasingly even. After further heat treatment(HT,1070℃,2 h + 845℃,24 h),the γ’ phase in the as-deposited and HIPed samples presented a bimodal size distribution, whereas that in the as-deposited sample showed a size that remained uneven. The comparison of tensile properties revealed that the tensile strength and uniform elongation of the HIP + HTed sample increased by 5% and 46%,respectively,due to the synergistic deformation of bimodal γ’phases, especially large cubic γ’ phases. Finally, the relationship between phase transformations and plastic deformations in the IDEDed sample was discussed on the basis of generalized stability theory in terms of the trade-off between thermodynamics and kinetics. 展开更多

This paper provided an effective method to further improve the mechanical properties of the AZ80+0.4%Ce magnesium alloy wheel spoke. The effect of high strength and ductility was obtained with a yield strength of 295.36 MPa,an elongation of 10%,by the combination of pre-deformation(7%deformation)and two-stage aging treatment(120℃/9 h+175℃/24 h).The evolution of the microstructure and properties of the alloy was explored under the coupling conditions of different pre-deformation degrees and multi-stage aging. The results show that,pre-deformation introduced a large number of(1012)tensile twinning and dislocations, which greatly promoted the probability of continuous precipitates(CPs)appearing. On the contrary, the discontinuous precipitates(DPs)were limited by the vertical and horizontal twin structure. As a result, the pre-nucleation method of two-stage aging increased the proportion of CPs by 34%-38%.Owing to the DPs was effectively suppressed, the alloy's yield strength has been greatly improved.Besides, under multi-stage aging, the twin boundaries induce protruding nucleation to form static recrystallization by hindering the migration of dislocations, and the matrix swallows the twins, then the texture gradually tilts from the two poles to the basal plane. As an important supplement, the grain refinement and oblique texture promoted the improvement of the yield strength of the component. 展开更多

A novel micro-nano Ti−10Cu−10Ni−8Al−8Nb−4Zr−1.5Hf filler was used to vacuum braze Ti−47Al−2Nb−2Cr−0.15B alloy at 1160−1220℃ for 30 min.The interfacial microstructure and formation mechanism of TiAl joints and the relationships among brazing temperature, interfacial microstructure and joint strength were emphatically investigated. Results show that the TiAl joints brazed at 1160 and 1180℃ possess three interfacial layers and mainly consist of α_(2)-Ti_(3)Al,τ_(3)-Al_(3)NiTi_(2) and Ti_(2)Ni,but the brazing seams are no longer layered and Ti_(2)Ni is completely replaced by the uniformly distributed τ_(3)-Al_(3)NiTi_(2) at 1200 and 1220℃ due to the destruction of α_(2)-Ti_(3)Al barrier layer. This transformation at 1200℃ obviously improves the tensile strength of the joint and obtains a maximum of 343 MPa.Notably, the outward diffusion of Al atoms from the dissolution of TiAl substrate dominates the microstructure evolution and tensile strength of the TiAl joint at different brazing temperatures. 展开更多

Plain concrete is strong in compression but brittle in tension, having a low tensile strain capacity that can significantly degrade the long-term performance of concrete structures, even when steel reinforcing is present. In order to address these challenges, short polymer fibers are randomly dispersed in a cement-based matrix to forma highly ductile engineered cementitious composite(ECC).Thismaterial exhibits high ductility under tensile forces, with its tensile strain being several hundred times greater than conventional concrete.Since concrete is inherently weak in tension, the tensile strain capacity(TSC)has become one of the most extensively researched properties. As a result, developing a model to predict the TSC of the ECC and to optimize the mixture proportions becomes challenging.Meanwhile, the effort required for laboratory trial batches to determine the TSC is reduced. To achieve the research objectives, five distinct models, artificial neural network(ANN),nonlinear model(NLR),linear relationship model(LR),multi-logistic model(MLR),and M5P-tree model(M5P),are investigated and employed to predict the TSCof ECCmixtures containing fly ash.Data from115 mixtures are gathered and analyzed to develop a new model. The input variables include mixture proportions, fiber length and diameter, and the time required for curing the various mixtures. The model’s effectiveness is evaluated and verified based on statistical parameters such as R2,mean absolute error(MAE),scatter index(SI),root mean squared error(RMSE),and objective function(OBJ)value.Consequently, the ANN model outperforms the others in predicting the TSC of the ECC,with RMSE,MAE,OBJ,SI,and R2 values of 0.42%,0.3%,0.33%,0.135%,and 0.98,respectively. 展开更多

The effect of slow shot speed on externally solidified crystal(ESC),porosity and tensile property in a newly developed high-pressure die-cast Al-Si alloy was investigated by optical microscopy(OM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and laboratory computed tomography(CT).Results showed that the newly developed AlSi9MnMoV alloy exhibited improved mechanical properties when compared to the AlSi10MnMg alloy. The AlSi9MnMoV alloy, which was designed with trace multicomponent additions, displays a notable grain refining effect in comparison to the AlSi10MnMg alloy.Refining elements Ti,Zr,V,Nb,B promote heterogeneous nucleation and reduce the grain size of primaryα-Al.At a lower slow shot speed, the large ESCs are easier to form and gather, developing into the dendrite net and net-shrinkage.With an increase in slow shot speed, the size and number of ESCs and porosities significantly reduce. In addition, the distribution of ESCs is more dispersed and the net-shrinkage disappears. The tensile property is greatly improved by adopting a higher slow shot speed. The ultimate tensile strength is enhanced from 260.31 MPa to 290.31 MPa(increased by 11.52%),and the elongation is enhanced from 3.72%to 6.34%(increased by 70.52%). 展开更多

The mechanical characteristics of crystalline rocks are affected by the heterogeneity of the spatial distribution of minerals. In this paper,a novel three-dimensional(3D)grain-based model(GBM)based on particle flow code(PFC),i.e.PFC3D-GBM,is proposed. This model can accomplish the grouping of mineral grains at the 3D scale and then filling them. Then, the effect of the position distribution, geometric size, and volume composite of mineral grains on the cracking behaviour and macroscopic properties of granite are examined by conducting Brazilian splitting tests. The numerical results show that when an external load is applied to a sample, force chains will form around each contact, and the orientation distribution of the force chains is uniform, which is independent of the external load level.Furthermore, the number of high-strength force chains is proportional to the external load level, and the main orientation distribution is consistent with the external loading direction. The main orientation of the cracks is vertical to that of the high-strength force chains. The geometric size of the mineral grains controls the mechanical behaviours. As the average grain size increases, the number of transgranular contacts with higher bonding strength in the region connecting both loading points increases. The number of high-strength force chains increases, leading to an increase in the stress concentration value required for the macroscopic failure of the sample.Due to the highest bonding strength, the generation of transgranular cracks in quartz requires a higher concentrated stress value. With increasing volume composition of quartz, the number of transgranular cracks in quartz distributed in the region connecting both loading points increases, which requires many high-strength force chains. The load level rises, leading to an increase in the tensile strength of the numerical sample. 展开更多

This study investigates the tensile failure mechanisms in granitic rock samples at different scales by means of different types of tests. To do that,we have selected a granitic rock type and obtained samples of different sizes with the diameter ranging from 30 mm to 84 mm.The samples have been subjected to direct tensile strength(DTS)tests, indirect Brazilian tensile strength(BTS)tests and to two fracture toughness testing approaches.Whereas DTS and fracture toughness were found to consistently grow with sample size, this trend was not clearly identified for BTS,where after an initial grow,a plateau of results was observed. This is a rather complete database of tensile related properties of a single rock type.Even if similar databases are rare, the obtained trends are generally consistent with previous scatter and partial experimental programs. However, different observations apply to different types of rocks and experimental approaches. The differences in variability and mean values of the measured parameters at different scales are critically analysed based on the heterogeneity, granular structure and fracture mechanics approaches. Some potential relations between parameters are revised and an indication is given on potential sample sizes for obtaining reliable results.Extending this database with different types of rocks is thought to be convenient to advance towards a better understanding of the tensile strength of rock materials. 展开更多

Dynamic tensile failure is a common phenomenon in deep rock practices, and thus accurately evaluating the dynamic tensile responses of rocks under triaxial pressures is of great significance. The Brazilian disc(BD)test is the suggested method by the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering(ISRM)for measuring both the static and dynamic tensile strengths of rock-like materials. However, due to the overload phenomenon and the complex preloading conditions, the dynamic tensile strengths of rocks measured by the BD tests tend to be overestimated. To address this issue, the dynamic BD tensile strength(BTS)of Fangshan marble(FM)under different preloading conditions were measured through a triaxial split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB).The fracture onset in BD specimen was captured through a strain gage around the disc center. The discrepancy between the traditional tensile strength(TTS,determined by the peak load P_(f) of the BD specimen)and the nominal tensile strength(NTS,obtained from the load P_(i) when the diametral fracture commences in the tested BD specimen)was applied to quantitatively evaluating the overload phenomenon. The Griffith criterion was used to rectify the calculation of the tensile stress at the disc center under triaxial stress states. The results demonstrate that the overload ratio(s)increases with the loading rate(σ)and decreases with the hydrostatic pressure(σ_(s)).The TTS corrected by the Griffith criterion is independent of theσ_(s)due to the overload phenomenon, while the NTS corrected by the Griffith criterion is sensitive to both the andσ.Therefore,it is essential to modify the tensile stress in dynamic confined BD tests using both the overload correction and the Griffith criterion rectification to obtain the accurate dynamic BTS of rocks. 展开更多

Aluminum high pressure die casting(HPDC)technology has evolved in the past decades, enabling stronger and larger one-piece casting with significant part consolidation. It also offers a higher design freedom for more mass-efficient thin-walled body structures. For body structures that require excellent ductility and fracture toughness to be joined with steel sheet via self-piercing riveting(for instance, shock towers and hinge pillars, etc.),a costly T7 heat treatment comprising a solution heat treatment at elevated temperatures(450℃-500℃)followed by an over-ageing heat treatment is needed to optimize microstructure for meeting product requirement. To enable cost-efficient mass production of HPDC body structures,it is important to eliminate the expensive T7 heat treatment without sacrificing mechanical properties.Optimizing die cast alloy chemistry is a potential solution to improve fracture toughness and ductility of the HPDC components. The present study intends to tailor the Mg and Cu additions for a new Al-Si-Cr type die casting alloy(registered as A379 with The Aluminum Association,USA)to achieve the desired tensile properties without using T7 heat treatment. It was found that Cu addition should be avoided,as it is not effective in enhancing strength while degrades tensile ductility.Mg addition is very effective in improving strength and has minor impact on tensile ductility. The investigated Al-Si-Cr alloy with a nominal composition of Al-8.5wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Cr-0.2wt.%Fe shows comparable tensile properties with the T7 treated AlSi10MnMg alloy which is currently used for manufacturing shock towers and hinge pillars. 展开更多

The effects of cooling rates on solidification behaviors, segregation characteristics and tensile property of GH4151 alloy were investigated using microstructure characterization and tensile test.Firstly,a relationship between the secondary dendrite arm spacing and cooling rate was determined and it was confirmed to be valid.Secondly,it can be found from microstructure observations that the morphology of(Nb,Ti)C carbides transits from blocky and script type to fine script type and spotty type, and the refinedγ'phase was observed due to decrease of segregation with increasing cooling rates.Thirdly, the solidification microstructures of the industrial-scale samples were analyzed. The morphology ofηphase changes from indistinguishable shape, fine needle-like shape to large block-like shape with increasing ingot diameter. As a result, the mechanical properties of alloy decrease due to increase of brittle precipitations. The experimental results show that the precipitation behavior of GH4151 is affected by segregation degree of elements, and the segregation degree is determined by solute distribution process and solid back-diffusion process. 展开更多

DNA nanotubes(DNTs)with user-defined shapes and functionalities have potential applications in many fields. So far, compared with numerous experimental studies, there have been only a handful of models on the mechanical properties of such DNTs.This paper aims at presenting a multiscale model to quantify the correlations among the pre-tension states, tensile properties, encapsulation structures of DNTs,and the surrounding factors.First,by combining a statistical worm-like-chain(WLC)model of single DNA deformation and Parsegian's mesoscopic model of DNA liquid crystal free energy,a multiscale tensegrity model is established, and the pre-tension state of DNTs is characterized theoretically for the first time. Then,by using the minimum potential energy principle, the force-extension curve and tensile rigidity of pre-tension DNTs are predicted. Finally, the effects of the encapsulation structure and surrounding factors on the tensile properties of DNTs are studied. The predictions for the tensile behaviors of DNTs can not only reproduce the existing experimental results, but also reveal that the competition of DNA intrachain and interchain interactions in the encapsulation structures determines the pre-tension states of DNTs and their tensile properties. The changes in the pre-tension states and environmental factors make the monotonic or non-monotonic changes in the tensile properties of DNTs under longitudinal loads. 展开更多

This paper presents a new 3D mesoscopic model of ultra-high performance cement-based composite(UHPCC)to investigate its dynamic tensile behavior. In this model, the UHPCC is regarded as a two-phase material composed of cementitious matrix and randomly distributed fibers. The model is established using the commercial software LS-DYNA and involves generating the randomly distributed fiber elements with considerations of diameter, length, orientation and volume fraction, and then fully constraining them with the matrix. In particular,to capture the slipping effect between fibers and matrix that has a strong influence on the dynamic tensile behavior, the fibers are modelled by a fictitious material represented by the load-slip relation. The strain-rate effect of slipping force neglected in most of previous studies is considered by calibrating constitutive parameters of the fictitious material under different strain-rates based on the single fiber pullout tests. Finally, the 3D mesoscopic model is validated against three sets of tension-dominated experiments covered a wide range of loading intensity.Numerical predictions demonstrate that strain-rate effect of slipping force must be considered, and the neglect of it may lead to a great underestimation of the dynamic tensile strength of UHPCC material and would unavoidably underestimate the blast resistance of UHPCC components. 展开更多

In nature, there are widely distributed bi-modulus materials with different deformation characteristics under compressive and tensile stress states, such as concrete, rock and ceramics.Due to the lack of constitutive model that could reasonably consider the bi-modulus property of materials, and the lack of simple and reliable measurement methods for the tensile elastic parameters of materials, scientists and engineers always neglect the effect of the bi-modulus property of materials in engineering design and numerical simulation. To solve this problem, this study utilizes the uncoupled strain-driven constitutive model proposed by Latorre and Montáns(2020)to systematically study the distributions and magnitudes of stresses and strains of bi-modulus materials in the three-point bending test through the numerical method.Furthermore,a new method to synchronously measure the tensile and compressive elastic moduli of materials through the four-point bending test is proposed. The numerical results show that the bi-modulus property of materials has a significant effect on the stress, strain and displacement in the specimen utilized in the three-point and four-point bending tests.Meanwhile, the results from the numerical tests,in which the elastic constitutive model proposed by Latorre and Montáns(2020)is utilized, also indicate that the newly proposed measurement method has a good reliability.Although the new measurement method proposed in this study can synchronously and effectively measure the tensile and compressive elastic moduli,it cannot measure the tensile and compressive Poisson’s ratios. 展开更多

The tensile tests of the extruded ZK60 Mg containing a longitudinal weld seam were carried out at room and elevated temperatures, and the effects of induced microstructure inhomogeneity on tensile deformation behavior was clarified. The results show that the deformation mode, dynamic recrystallization(DRX), texture evolution and mechanical properties are strongly affected by the longitudinal weld seam, temperature, and loading direction. The room temperature(RT) deformation of welding zone is controlled by the dislocation slips with the association of some twins, while twinning plays significant roles in the accommodation of c-axis strain of the coarse grains on matrix zone. The deformation at RT stretched along extrusion direction(ED) and transverse direction(TD) are controlled by basal slip/twinning and basal slip/prismatic slip/twinning, respectively. During high temperature tension, the dislocation cross slip of pyramidal slip is activated, and grain boundary sliding occurred in welding zone, leading to the superplastic behavior. With the increase of tensile temperature, the predominant DRX mode is transformed from continuous DRX to discontinuous DRX. Moreover, the basal poles of the grains spread from TD towards ED with the decrease of maximum pole intensity when stretched along ED, while non-basal textures are transformed to (10-10) fiber texture when stretched along TD. The slip-dominated flow is seen during RT tension along ED, while twinning becomes predominant during RT tension along TD. The fine grain structure causes the superior RT tensile properties along ED of welding zone with ultimate tensile strength of 315 MPa and elongation to failure of 13.8%. With the increase of tensile temperature, the slipping-dominated deformation is transformed into twinning-dominated, causing the decrease of strength and increase of elongation. 展开更多

This study investigates the effect of{10-12}deformation twins on the continuous precipitation behavior of an extruded Mg-8.0Al-0.5Zn-0.2Mn(AZ80)alloy during aging. The extruded AZ80 alloy is compressed along the transverse direction to introduce{10-12}twins,followed by an aging treatment at 300℃.The extruded material exhibits a twin-free microstructure with low internal strain energy, whereas the pre-twinned material possesses abundant{10-12}twins and has high internal strain energy. The aging results reveal that the peak-aging time of the pre-twinned material(1 h)is one-eighth of that of the extruded material(8 h).Although Mg_(17)Al_(12)continuous precipitates(CPs)are observed in both the peak-aged materials, these CPs are much smaller and more densely distributed in the pre-twinned material despite the significantly shorter aging time. The CPs size in the peak-aged materials increases in the following order:twinned region in the pre-twinned material(0.47μm)<residual matrix region in the pre-twinned material(1.71μm)<matrix region in the extruded material(2.55μm).Moreover,the CPs number density in the twinned region of the pre-twinned material is approximately 11 times higher than that in the matrix region of the extruded material. The peak-aged pre-twinned material exhibits significantly higher tensile strength and ductility than the peak-aged extruded material. These results demonstrate that the formation of{10-12}twins in the extruded AZ80 alloy substantially accelerates the static precipitation of CPs during aging at 300℃and improves the tensile properties of the peak-aged material. 展开更多

Tensile properties of fly ash based engineered geopolymer composites(FA-EGC)at different curing ages were studied by uniaxial tensile test and ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV)methods, which included uniaxial tensile properties, the correlation between ultrasonic pulse velocity and tensile properties, and characteristic parameters of microcracks. The experimental results show that obvious strain hardening behavior can be found in FA-EGC at different curing ages. With the increase of curing age,the tensile strength increases, the tensile strain decreases and the toughness becomes worse. The UPV of FA-EGC increases with curing age,and a strong correlation can be found between tensile strength and UPV.With the increase of curing age,the average crack width of FA-EGC decreases and the total number of cracks increases. This is because the strength of geopolymer increases fast at early age, thus the later strength development of FA-EGC tend to be stable. At the same time, the bond strength between fiber and matrix, and the friction of fiber/matrix interface continue to increase with curing age, thus the bridging effect of fiber is gradually strengthened. In conclusion, the increase of curing age is beneficial to the development of tensile properties of FA-EGC. 展开更多

The performance of engineered wood products is highly associated with proper bonding and an efficient cutting method. This paper investigates the influence of CO_(2) laser cutting on the wetting properties, the modified che-mical component of the laser-cut surface, and the strength and adhesive penetration near the bondline.Beech-wood is cut by the laser with varying processing parameters, cutting speeds, gas pressures, and focal point positions. The laser-cut samples were divided into two groups, sanded and non-sanded samples.Polyvinyl acetate adhesive(PVAc)was used to bond the groups of laser-cut samples. After assembly with cold pressing, the tensile shear test was carried out.Numerical modelling was carried out to determine the partial elongation and shear strain of the glue line.Based on this, the shear modulus and linear elasticity of the glue line were estimated.Scan-ning electron microscopy was used to assess the adhesive penetration into the porosity structure of the laser-cut samples, and the depth of the heat-affected zone. The laser-cut surface was analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The wetting properties of the laser-cut surface were investigated by using a contact angle goni-ometer.The numerical model of the strain-stress curve confirmed the experimental model. The highest modulus of the linear elasticity of the glue in the numerical calculation belongs to the joint containing laser-cut samples at a gas pressure of 21(bar).The penetration depth of PVAc adhesive into the porosity structure of the laser-cut sam-ples was similar to that of sawn samples. The deepest heat-affected zone in the laser-cut samples was 150µm.A PVAc drop disappeared immediately on the laser-cut surface without sanding, but gradually on the sanded surface. In contrast, the drop on the sawn surface remained with an angle of 32°–48°.The degradation of hemi-cellulose and lignin was proven by the lower intensity of the C=O and C-O Bonds, compared to the sawn surface. 展开更多
