This paper studies mechanical property and fractography of the welded joints obtained in different welding parameters such as welding heat and welding press with/without gas shield in TiNi shape memory alloy precise pulse resistance butt welding using tensile strength test, XRD, SEM and TEM measures. The optimum welding parameters obtaining high tensile strength welded joint are got. On the condition of welding press magneting current 2 A and welding heat 75%, the joint strength is the highest. This is important for to study other properties of TiNi shape memory alloy further. The experimental results state that argon gas shield have different effects on different welding parameters, less on welding press, but great on welding heat. But excessive welding press and welding heat have great effects on joint tensile strength. Too high welding heat can produce the new intermetallic compound, this intermetallic compound lead to dislocation density to increase and form the potential crack initiation, which can easily make the joint fracture under stress effect and decrease the shape memory ratio of joint for high density dislocation groups existing in the twinned martensite. 展开更多

Limit loads are widely studied and several limit load solutions are proposed to some typical geometry of weldments. However, there are no limit load solutions exist for the single edge crack weldments in tension(SEC(T)),which is also a typical geometry in fracture analysis. The mis-matching limit load for thick plate with SEC(T) are investigated and the special limit load solutions are proposed based on the available mis-matching limit load solutions and systematic finite element analyses. The real weld configurations are simplified as a strip, and different weld strength mis-matching ratio M,crack depth/width ratio a/W and weld width 2H are in consideration. As a result,it is found that there exists excellent agreement between the limit load solutions and the FE results for almost all the mis-matching ration M,a/W and ligament-to-weld width ratio(W-a)/H.Moreover,useful recommendations are given for evaluating the limit loads of the EBW structure with SEC(T).For the EBW joints with SEC(T),the mis-matching limit loads can be obtained assuming that the components are wholly made of base metal, when M changing from 1.6 to 0.6.When M decreasing to 0.4,the mis-matching limit loads can be obtained assuming that the components are wholly made of base metal only for large value of(W-a)/H.The recommendations may be useful for evaluating the limit loads of the EBW structures with SEC(T).The engineering simplifications are given for assessing the limit loads of electron beam welded structure with SEC(T). 展开更多

An experimental investigation on the seismic behavior of a type of outrigger truss-reinforced concrete wall shear connection using multiple steel angles is presented. Six large-scale shear connection models, which involved a portion of reinforced concrete wall and a shear tab welded onto a steel endplate with three steel angles, were constructed and tested under combined actions of cyclic axial load and eccentric shear. The effects of embedment lengths of steel angles, wall boundary elements, types of anchor plates, and thicknesses of endplates were investigated. The test results indicate that properly detailed connections exhibit desirable seismic behavior and fail due to the ductile fracture of steel angles. Wall boundary elements provide beneficial confinement to the concrete surrounding steel angles and thus increase the strength and stiffness of connections. Connections using whole anchor plates are prone to suffer concrete pry-out failure while connections with thin endplates have a relatively low strength and fail due to large inelastic deformations of the endplates. The current design equations proposed by Chinese Standard 04G362 and Code GB50011 significantly underestimate the capacities of the connection models. A revised design method to account for the influence of previously mentioned test parameters was developed. 展开更多

Friction stir welding(FSW) was used to weld dissimilar Al-Mg-Si/Al-Zn-Mg aluminum alloys in this work.Influences of sheet configuration on microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were mainly discussed. Results showed that rather different joint cross sections were obtained when using different sheet configurations.Coarser β' phases can be observed at the heat affected zone(HAZ) of the Al-Mg-Si alloy side, which was the main factor affecting the tensile properties and the fatigue properties.Tensile strengths of the dissimilar Al-Mg-Si/Al-Zn-Mg joints using both configurations were higher than that of the Al-Mg-Si FSW joint. When the Al-Zn-Mg alloy was located at the advancing side(AS),the joints owned better fatigue properties due to the bridging effect of the big secondary phase particles. 展开更多

Tensile and hardness values for 7075-T651 aluminum alloy in the as welded and post weld heat treated conditions(solubilization and artificial aging-T6),obtained using GMAW and modified indirect electric arc(MIEA)welding processes are presented. Results showed that the base material along rolling direction exhibited a tensile strength of around 600 MPa and elongation of 11%.For the as welded condition, tensile strength was 260 MPa and elongation percent of 3%.This behavior was attributed to brittleness induced by the microstructural characteristics of the welded alloys,as well as high porosity.Hardness profiles along the welds were obtained and different welded zones were identified.A soft zone(*100 HV0.1) in the heat affected zone for GMAW and MIEA was observed, the minimum hardness corresponding to weld metal(*85 and *96 HV0.1for GMAW and MIEA,respectively). The high dilution between filler and base metal during welding in MIEA allows to the Zn and Cu to flow from the base metal into the weld metal, inducing hardening by solution and subsequent artificial aging. In this regard, the hardness of the weld metal for MIEA increases by 56%,while the tensile strength reaches a value close to 400 MPa.For GMAW,non-favorable hardening effect was observed for the weld metal after solution and artificial aging. 展开更多

This study investigates the cryogenic tensile properties and fracture behavior of fiction stir welded and post-weld heat-treated joints of 32Mn-7Cr-1Mo-0.3N steel. Cryogenic brittle fracture, which occurred in the as-welded joint, is related to the residual particles that contain tungsten in the joint band structure. Post-weld water toughening resulted in the cryogenic intergranular brittleness of the joint, which is related to the non-equilibrium segregation of solute atoms during the post-weld water toughening. Annealing at 55OC for 30rain can effectively inhibit the cryogenic intergranular brittleness of the post- weld water-toughened joint. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and uniform elongation of the annealed joint are approximately 95%, 87%, and 94% of the corresponding data of the base metal. 展开更多

Total 72 lapped specimens including six different kinds of CR340 steel structures were prepared to study the influence of the spot welding technology on their fatigue characteristics.Fatigue test and group method were employed and performed on each sample to obtain the fatigue experimental data of each structure under four stress levels. The results show that the spot welding technology had a notable impact on the fatigue performance of both the shear and tensile joints. It can significantly improve the fatigue strength of the structure, the consistency and repeatability of experimental data,as well as the stability and reliability of the structure under dynamic load environment. The shear spot welding structure demonstrates the best fatigue performance which is very important for wide application in engineering of this method. 展开更多

The effect of heat input on fume and their compositions during gas metal arc welding (GMAW) of AISI 316 stainless steel plates are investigated. Fume generation rate (FGR) and fume percentage were determined by ANSI/AWS F1.2 methods. Particle characterization was performed with SEM-XEDS and XRF analysis to reveal the particle morphology and chemical composition of the fume particles. The SEM analysis reveals the morphology of particles having three distinct shapes namely spherical, irregular, and agglomerated. Spherical particles were the most abundant type of individual particle. All the fume particle size falls in the range of less than 100 nm. Mechanical properties (strength, hardness and toughness) and microstructural analysis of the weld deposits were evaluated. It is found that heat input of 1.15 kJ/mm is beneficial to weld stainless steel by GMAW process due to lower level of welding fume emissions and superior mechanical properties of the joints. 展开更多
