English Language Attrition Among EFL Learners in Terms of Writing Skills

This study aims to identify if participants experience attrition in writing skills after two years' nonuse of English.70 participants took the tests of writing.A questionnaire was administered to the 70 participants and it included numerous variables that relate to language attrition such as motivation and social activities.The data collected from the tests and questionnaire were analyzed via SPSS.Cronbach's alpha and Many Facets Rasch Model were used to validate the construct and external reliability.The findings showed that participants experienced an overall statistically significant level of attrition in writing skills.Additionally,the specific skills of pertinence,coherence,clarity but excluding grammar,were seen to experience significant attrition over the two years' period.Participants showed a lower level of positive motivation and less social activities for learning English language during the two years' nonuse than before the two years' nonuse of English and this could have contributed to the writing attrition.

On Chinese-English Translation of Disease and Syndrome Terms in Shang Han Lun from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory

Shang Han Lun is one of the most famous and important traditional medical books in China,so many translation versions of it have emerged.Based on the comparison of examples taken from two of these translation versions,Young Jie De ' s Shang Han Lun Explained and Huang Hai s Introduction to Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Disease,the paper points out that Nida s Functional Equivalence Theory provides a new idea for the translation of Disease and Syndrome Terms in TCM that literal translation,liberal translation and transliteration can be adopted appropriately to make readers of translation versions understand TCM accurately and easily.

Kinship terms system is one of the most common features in the world,but different countries have different kinship expressions.This paper mainly states the differences between English and Chinese kinship terms and Cultural differences between English and Chinese kinship terms.The cultural differences between English and Chinese kinship terms exist in several aspects.The causes of differences between English and Chinese kinship terms are various,and the major aspects we will consider are history,like different patriarchal clan system;worldview,like different ideas of birth and numbers of birth;different social organization and system changes of social system.

English Translation of Basic Chinese Color Terms: A Cultural Perspective

Color words, widely existing in different languages, have the identical visual effects for all nations. They not only denote color, but also convey cultural connotations in different cultural contexts. From the cultural perspective, the thesis analyzes similarities and differences of basic color terms Red and Black in English and Chinese, explores the application of domestication and foreignization in the English translation of these Chinese color terms, and illustrates the employment of mimesis, substitution and decoloration with examples in the translation practices.

An Analysis of Chinese Address Terms From the Perspective of Speech Act Theory

Optimal Quad Channel Long Short-Term Memory Based Fake News Classification on English Corpus

The term‘corpus’refers to a huge volume of structured datasets containing machine-readable texts.Such texts are generated in a natural communicative setting.The explosion of social media permitted individuals to spread data with minimal examination and filters freely.Due to this,the old problem of fake news has resurfaced.It has become an important concern due to its negative impact on the community.To manage the spread of fake news,automatic recognition approaches have been investigated earlier using Artificial Intelligence(AI)and Machine Learning(ML)techniques.To perform the medicinal text classification tasks,the ML approaches were applied,and they performed quite effectively.Still,a huge effort is required from the human side to generate the labelled training data.The recent progress of the Deep Learning(DL)methods seems to be a promising solution to tackle difficult types of Natural Language Processing(NLP)tasks,especially fake news detection.To unlock social media data,an automatic text classifier is highly helpful in the domain of NLP.The current research article focuses on the design of the Optimal Quad ChannelHybrid Long Short-Term Memory-based Fake News Classification(QCLSTM-FNC)approach.The presented QCLSTM-FNC approach aims to identify and differentiate fake news from actual news.To attain this,the proposed QCLSTM-FNC approach follows two methods such as the pre-processing data method and the Glovebased word embedding process.Besides,the QCLSTM model is utilized for classification.To boost the classification results of the QCLSTM model,a Quasi-Oppositional Sandpiper Optimization(QOSPO)algorithm is utilized to fine-tune the hyperparameters.The proposed QCLSTM-FNC approach was experimentally validated against a benchmark dataset.The QCLSTMFNC approach successfully outperformed all other existing DL models under different measures.

In the current era of rapid development, excellent culture needs to be inherited and spread to the world. Therefore, it is essential to consider the translation of the 24 solar terms. China persists in the principle of the Belt and Road Initiative, adheres to the guidance of Chinese traditional excellent culture goes global, and enhances the influence of Chinese culture on the words, the culture of the words communicating and developing constantly. This paper analyzes and compares translations of different versions, explores the necessity of translation strategies for translation, then summaries the translation strategy, ultimately figures out the development space, ted texts and promote the exchange of Chinese and foreign cultures.

A Brief Study of Cultural Connotation of English Color Terms

Color can make our life colorful not only by its physical attributions, but also by its extended meanings derived from cultural differences. There is striking richness in the cultural connotations of color terms, which can vivify our language. Since language is a reflection of culture, in order to have a good master of the English culture and overcome misunderstandings in communication, a better understanding of indications and cultural connotations of some typical color terms is a prerequisite for English learners.However, because English-speaking countries have certain geographic environments, customs, ways of thinking, religious beliefs, regimes, literature and arts and ways of living, there is no surprise that colors are described in some specific ways and have some particular meanings in that countries.The thesis will mainly deal with cultural connotations of some typical color terms and their usage in language.

A Contrastive Study on Cultural Connotations of Chinese and English Color Terms

Both Chinese and English are rich in the words denoting different colors. Cultural connotations of these words,however,arouse more interest than their lexical meanings due to the discrepancy between the two languages deriving from the differences of the speakers' cultural background,social customs,and aesthetic interests. English "DOG" and Chinese "GOU":Comparison on English and Chinese Cultural Connotations in Terms of Animal Words

Connotations refer to the additional meanings that a word or phrase has beyond its central meaning.These meanings show people's attitudes or feelings toward what the word or phrase refers to.People from different countries or regions may have different connotative reactions to the word or phrase because of their different social and cultural background.Such as the word "dog" in English and 狗(gou)in Chinese.Though they can be said to have the same denotative meaning,people from China and English-speaking countries havedifferent attitudes toward the above two words.This article is about to compare English and Chinese cultural connotations in terms of animal words.And the author hopes there will be fewer and fewer communicative problems arising from cultural differences in intercultural communication as long as people from different countries or regions could more and more understand each other's culture.

Profile of Full-Term Births in Maternity Wards of Public Hospitals in Douala Cameroon

Introduction: Pregnancy as much as childbirth constitutes a risky situation, potentially fraught with sometimes dramatic complications: maternal death. Objective: We conducted this study with the aim of establishing the profile of those giving birth in our context with the aim to anticipate operationally in the future on morbidity but more on maternal deaths. Methodology: We conducted, using a structured questionnaire, a prospective descriptive study in representative maternity wards in the city of Douala;the study variables were socio-economic, anthropometric, obstetrical and clinical. Statistical analyses were carried out with CS Pro 7.3 and SPSS version 25.0 software. The Student, Chi-square and Fischer tests were used to compare the means of the variables and the percentages. Results: We recruited 305 births for our study. The average age of our births was 28.7 years ± 6.1 with an average height of 161.6 cm ± 5.06;an average body mass index at the start of pregnancy of 28.0 kilograms/square meter and 31.3 kilograms/square meter at delivery;the average weight gain was 8.4 g ± 5.37;an average gestation of 2.84±1.90;an average parity of 2.2 ± 2.1 with an average birth interval of 27.7 months ± 23.7. The average gestational age was 39.2 weeks ± 1.21 with pregnancy pathology dominated by malaria;85.9% began their prenatal follow-up before the 14th week of amenorrhea. Conclusion: The profile of childbirth in urban Cameroon does not seem potentially dystocic compared to that of the same regional and racial area.

On the English Translations of “姐姐”(“jiejie”)and “妹妹”(“meimei”)Fictive Terms of Address in Honglou Meng

Based on a thorough case study of Yang's and Hawks' translations of the fictive kinship terms of address"姐姐/妹妹"in Honglou Meng, this paper analyzes the cultural and contextual connotations of the terms in the original, discusses comparatively the misinterpretations of the translations from target readers and explores the cultural orientations and translation strategies of the two versions, proposing that in translating these cultural-and-contextual-bound terms, translators should be bi-culturally conscious and take into account target readers' interpretation as well as make cultural compensations so as to bring out the exact people relations and retain contextual and cultural connotations.

A Comparison between Late Preterm and Term Infants with Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Early-Onset Sepsis, and Neonatal Jaundice in Ecuadorian Newborns

Background: To examine the differences in prevalence of respiratory distress syndrome, early-onset sepsis and jaundice, between late preterm infants versus term infants in Ecuadorian newborns. Methods: Study design: Epidemiological, observational, and cross-sectional, with two cohorts of patients. Settings: IESS Quito Sur Hospital at Quito, Ecuador, from February to April of 2020. Participants: This study included 204 newborns, 102 preterm infants, 102 term infants. Results: There are significant differences between late preterm infants and term infants, with a p-value of 0.000 in the prevalence of early sepsis, 70.59% vs. 35.29%. In respiratory distress syndrome between late and term premature infants, significant differences were observed with a p-value of 0.000, the proportion being 55.58% vs. 24.51% respectively. The prevalence of jaundice is higher in term infants with a p value of 0.002, 72.55%, versus 51.96% in late preterm infants, and the mean value of bilirubins in mg/dL was higher in term infants 14.32 versus 12.33 in late preterm infants;this difference is statistically significant with a p value of 0.004. Admission to the NICU is more frequent in late preterm infants with a p-value of 0.000, being 42.16% for late preterm infants vs. 7.84% in term infants;the mean of the hospital days with p-value 0.005, was higher in late preterm infants 4.97 days vs. 3.55 days for term newborns. Conclusion: Due to the conditions of their immaturity, late preterm infants are 2.86 times more likely to present early sepsis than full-term newborns. It is shown that late preterm infants are 2.69 times more likely to have respiratory distress syndrome compared to term infants, therefore, late preterm infants have a longer hospital stay of 4.97 days versus 3.55 days in term infants. Jaundice and mean bilirubin levels are higher in term infants due to blood group incompatibility and insufficient breastfeeding.

Long-term assessment of collagenase treatment for Dupuytren’s contracture:A 10-year follow-up study

BACKGROUND Enzymatic fasciotomy with collagenase clostridium histolyticum(CCH)has revolutionized the treatment for Dupuytren’s contracture(DC).Despite its benefits,the long-term outcomes remain unclear.This study presented a comprehensive 10-year follow-up assessment of the enduring effects of CCH on patients with DC.AIM To compare the short-term(12 wk)and long-term(10 years)outcomes on CCH treatment in patients with DC.METHODS A cohort of 45 patients was treated with CCH at the metacarpophalangeal(MCP)joint and the proximal interphalangeal(PIP)joint and underwent systematic reevaluation.The study adhered to multicenter trial protocols,and assessments were conducted at 12 wk,7 years,and 10 years post-surgery.RESULTS Thirty-seven patients completed the 10-year follow-up.At 10 years,patients treated at the PIP joint exhibited a 100%recurrence.However,patients treated at the MCP joint only showed a 50%recurrence.Patient satisfaction varied,with a lower satisfaction reported in PIP joint cases.Recurrence exceeding 20 degrees on the total passive extension deficit was observed,indicating a challenge for sustained efficacy.Significant differences were noted between outcomes at the 7-year and 10-year intervals.CONCLUSION CCH demonstrated sustained efficacy when applied to the MCP joint.However,caution is warranted for CCH treatment at the PIP joint due to a high level of recurrence and low patient satisfaction.Re-intervention is needed within a decade of treatment.
