A Study of the Effect of Sichuan Opera Singing on the Vocal Skills of Music Students

The purpose of the article is to explore the effects of Sichuan opera singing on music majors’vocal skills,focusing on three key aspects:pitch test,assessment of rhythmic perception,and emotional expression.Through a quasi-experimental design,100 music majors were selected as research subjects and divided into an experimental group that received Sichuan opera singing instruction and a control group that received traditional vocal instruction.The results showed that compared with the control group,the experimental group receiving Sichuan opera singing teaching showed significant improvement in pitch mastery,rhythm perception,and emotional expression.

The Modernization of Traditional Chinese Opera and a Local Perspective of Local Operas:A Case Study of the Research on the Yisu Art Troupe by Li Youjun and Guo Hongjun

From both historical and artistic points of view,Qinqiang Opera can be considered a significant genre outside the realms of Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera.The research on Qinqiang Opera has long been a focal point in the research on local operas with particular emphasis from a local perspective of the Yisu Art Troupe,a key and hot topic in the studies of Qinqiang Opera.Taking the Yisu Art Troupe as a case study to scrutinize and address the intricacies within the process of modernization of traditional Chinese opera proved to be beneficial.Since the 20th century,studies on the Yisu Art Troupe have evolved from scattered and impressionistic self-narratives into systematic and theoretical academic research.In the new century,scholars,such as Xin Xuefeng,Li Youjun,and Guo Hongjun,have been especially diligent with studies in this field.As Xin Xuefeng is relatively unknown due to his emphasis on traditional opera music,Li Youjun and Guo Hongjun have gradually emerged as important contemporary scholars in the study of the Yisu Art Troupe.Guo and Li not only further theorize the study of the Yisu Art Troupe but also conduct in-depth and meticulous studies on the nature of the Yisu Art Troupe,the establishment of the director-centered mode in Qinqiang Opera,the social function,and the playwriting of the Yisu Art Troupe by examining and reflecting it within the broader context of the modernization of traditional Chinese opera in the 20th century.

Idyllic Chronotope as One of the Principles of Organizing Time and Space: The Example of Handel’s “Alcina” Staged by Katia Korabelnik

An operatic work is a complex assemblage of different arts.Space-time in an operatic work is organized as a set of scores of all participating arts and is based on the conventions of their chronotopes.Each score is part of the system.At the same time,it is also relatively independent and flexible and can become a leading component for building the structure of the work.The chronotope of an operatic piece has several levels:(1)A dramaturgical source(a musical score with a libretto)that creates the spatial-time system of the work.This is a musical and poetical text whose chronotope transfers it into a stage text,placing it as the chronotope of the performance.(2)A spatial-time-stage director system.A stage work is a material object and is also the original idea of its creator,their spiritual perception.Being so,we discover the dual reality-a physical space-time of the work and a metaphysical space-time of its idea.A spatial-time system is the stage language of the work,the coordination between its external and internal art form.The external form is a set of expressive representations and the internal form is a logical structure,the space-time of the director’s perception.(3)Spatial-time-singer system.The singer integrates into this system partially in a way that is conditioned by the parameters of the chronotope in the spatial-time system.(4)A time-spatial system-an observer.Here a synergistic situation is created in which the show at the time of its ending(disintegration)moves into the space-time of the viewer and changes their inner world.In the ever-growing mosaic of contemporary art,in a rich variety of different currents,there is a need to look for universal values-the fundamental things that produce a sense of uniformity and completeness of the artistic work.A temporal analysis,that is,the analysis of the chronotopes of an operatic work can become a starting point for different approaches that investigate the contemporary processes taking place in an operatic work,and can also show new directions in the development of the operatic genre itself.

Bellini’s Norma and the Challenge of Regieoper

Despite the universal messages of Bellini’s Norma,the attempts at translating and adapting it to a modern context in the revisionist spirit of Regieoper(the director’s opera)encounter serious difficulties,as indicated by recent productions.The present paper focuses on these difficulties by examining in detail what appear to be the most challenging,innovative and thought-provoking among those productions which,despite remarkable merits,suffer from acute shortcomings:inter alia certain incompatibilities with the libretto,cultural dissonances,and problems of inner-coherence and verisimilitude.The detailed analysis of specific productions is followed by a general discussion(through a comparative approach)of Norma’s adaptability to Regieoper,which is shown to be extremely difficult,among other reasons because the terms of reference to the dimensions of the historical context(and the inherent mores)in its libretto are by far less flexible than those of other operas.Norma’s universal messages and its dualities of“foreign”versus“familiar,”with their vast semantic ambit,would seem to be better understood by meticulously delving into the subtleties of the text(and subtext)of Romani’s sophisticated libretto.Inner-coherence and compatibility with the libretto are essential for any attempt at creating an appropriate analogy running parallel to the original narrative.A fully convincing production of Norma in a modernizing spirit,if at all possible,remains an artistic challenge.

Anti-TNF alpha in the treatment of ulcerative colitis:A valid approach for organ-sparing or an expensive option to delay surgery?

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease affecting large bowel with variable clinical course. The history of disease has been modified by the introduction of biologic therapy, in particular Infliximab (IFX), that has demonstrated efficacy in inducing fast symptoms remission, promoting mucosal healing and maintaining long-term remission. However, surgery is still needed for UC patients: in case of failure of medical therapy and if acute complications or a malignancy occurred. Surgical treatment is associated with a short-term post-operative mortality and morbidity respectively of 0%-4% and 30%. In this study we systematically analyzed: the role of IFX in reducing the colectomy rate, the risk of post-operative morbidity in pre-operatively IFX-treated patients and the cost-effectiveness of IFX therapy. Four of 5 analyzed randomized controlled trials demonstrated that therapy with IFX significantly reduces the colectomy rate. Moreover, pre-operative treatment with IFX doesn’t seem to increase post-operative infectious complications. By an economic point of view, the cost-effectiveness of IFX-therapy was demonstrated for UC patients suffering from moderate to severe UC in a study based on a cost estimation of the National Health Service of England and Wales. However, the argument is debated.

Music score are the carrier of musical works,and Chinese Opera is an important part of traditional Chinese folk music.The enduring transmission method of music is an oral tradition,and only a few operatic scores(such as Kunqu Opera,Peking Opera,etc.)have been published before 1949.It was only in the 1950s where the surge of music specialists in the workforce has initiated an effort to record operatic works,resulting in the publication of Chinese Opera and vocal music.After the 1980s,various operatic texts were found stacked on top of each other.In particular,during the Seventh Five-Year Plan key scientific research project of the National Philosophy and Social Sciences,the“Chinese Opera Music Integration”series was founded to compile a comprehensive collection of vocal scores from various operas.By creating a database,a large number of rich resources on opera music can be accessed when all of its information and classification are compiled into the database.By providing the function of searching and browsing some of the vocal scores and images online,its significance is not only limited to providing complete access to operatic works but also promotes the development of academic research in opera music.

The opera proverb is responsible for both inheriting the tradition and developing the ancient art. The biggest challenge is translation which is carrier of culture. Through good translation, we will gain a better understanding of the quintessence of our tradition and of the living embodiment of China and Chinese culture. This paper is intended to study opera proverb translation from the viewpoint of ＂intertextuality＂. The author believes that translation is a type of transforming activity intertextualized with language, text, and culture. Intertextuality theory is applied to investigate the process of translation. Intertextuality will be of great help to the translation of opera proverbs, which means not only to explore and transfer the literal meaning of the source text, but also to interpret and expound the cultural meaning. Only if a translation is reliable and makes sense of traditional culture can our culture be known and appreciated by the world.
