Ever since the 1970s when Chinese American writers thrived from a marginal position and integrated into the mainstream of American literature, the study on Chinese American Literature has received more and more attention from the academic circles. However, the research on this newly emerging subject in the field of translation studies has not been treated with equal attention. This thesis attempts to propose a possible strategy to translate Chinese American works, based on the theory of "functional equivalence", taking the comparison of the 2 Chinese versions of TAN's The Joy Luck Club as an example. 展开更多

The cultural dimension refers to the five cultural dimensions proposed by Hofstede and supplemented by later scholars. Its role is to serve as a framework for measuring the differences between cultures of various countries. The Joy Luck Club shows the cultural differences between China and America by describing the contradictions between four pairs of Chinese mothers and daughters. At present, most of the analysis of cultural differences in novels lack systematic summary and deep excavation. As we all know, the root of the contradiction between mothers and daughters is the cultural conflicts, and this paper will take Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory as a framework and use“the joy luck club”as the text to reveal the deeper cultural reasons for the contradictions between mothers and daughters through literature and theories. 展开更多

While much research on The Joy Luck Club has been studied through grand lens, like feminism,or cultural factors, trauma, etc.,little research has been conducted to highlight self-consciousness and conflicts that are reflected in their seemingly endless dialogues between the four mothers and their daughters throughout the novel.Using dialogue from Bakhtin’s polyphony theory, the present study investigates precisely how it works to awaken self-consciousness in all of them;how their understanding and connection are restored, and eventually how exactly right decisions are made for their daughters in marriage. The findings show that, after numerous dialogues between mothers and daughters, their self-awareness has become clearer, their relations are mended, the right decisions are made, and eventually the order in every aspect is reconstructed. The study calls for greater attention to the embodiment of dialogues in The Joy Luck Club, and how they work effectively and profoundly at every level, and at last how they fulfill the reconstruction of orders in certain aspects. 展开更多

This paper is mainly written to explore how cultural differences and clashes between America and China give rise to mother-daughter discords and conflicts. The paper was conducted based on the definition of culture in order to make clear of cultural conflicts. It is written to analyze the two groups of women immigrants unavoidably encountering the clash between their ancestral culture—Chinese culture and the dominant culture--American culture. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates that the mothers' Chinese roots are the root cause of misunderstandings and conflicts between their American-born daughters and themselves.Besides, the writer analyzes that different standpoints towards education value between mothers and American- born daughters cause their misunderstanding and conflicts. The conclusion is that the diversities between Chinese culture and American culture are the root cause for the mother-daughter discords and conflicts. 展开更多
