The Tentative Research on Cultural Identity in China English and on How to Teach Chinese Culture in College English Class

With the rapid pace of globalization,English has become the global language or international language which is playing all increasingly important role in international communication. Inevitably involved in this process,China has experienced all upsurge of English learning. The author drawing support from the theories in sociolinguistics and intercultural communication, And analysis the sets of teaching materials used in college English class, for example, The New Horizon College English. The unbalanced proportion of Chinese culture input to western culture input in textbooks is one of the main reasons why Chinese college students are incompetent in expressing Chinese culture in English.

Being Chinese in Lived Intercultural Experiences:A Discourse Analysis of Chinese Undergraduates’Perceptions of Chinese Culture

The current study investigates a group of Chinese undergraduates’perceptions of Chinese culture.It examines the discourses that the students drew on to assign meaning to Chinese culture and how the students used these discourses in constructing their Chinese cultural identity.A qualitative study was conducted collecting written self-reflective reports on critical intercultural incidents from 39 Chinese undergraduates at a university in Beijing.Questions designed to evoke reports from the students had them describe incidents in their past intercultural experiences that made them acutely aware of themselves“being Chinese”and specify aspects of Chinese culture that they felt such awareness could be attributed to.A discourse analysis reveals the multiplicity and contextuality of the students’notions of Chinese culture.The findings raise important considerations for contemporary Chinese undergraduates’cultural identity and their much debated“identity crisis.”

Maxine Hong Kingston＇s The woman warrior： Misrepresentation of Chinese traditional culture and its relationship with movies

Chinese-American literature that grew up at the end of 1960s and the beginning of 1970s not only increased in quantity but also broke through in theme and genre. From 1970s, Chinese-American literature has developed by leaps and bounds and a group of outstanding and innovative writers also appeared who earned the respect of literary critics and enjoyed a large number of American readers--for example, Maxine Hong Kingston （1940-） and Amy Tan （1952-） as novelists and David Henry Hwang （1957-） as a playwright. The woman warrior in particular is regarded as the work that marks the rise of Chinese-American literature in modem American literary history. This paper intends to argue the investigation of individual identity of Maxine Hong Kingston as a Chinese-American woman and the deliberate misinterpretation of Chinese traditions in The woman warrior. In addition, to create the collective identity of Chinese-Americans, the author actually takes the way of traditional Chinese movies that she has inherited and uses the highlights which are most appreciated by the Westerners to cater to their interests and fantasies.

A Glimpse of Hong Kong ＂Chineseness＂： Pre-existing Tunes as the Redemption of a Cultural Identity

When the umbrellas were held up against the tear gas attack in the protest on September 28, 2014, the hot issue raised by the marathon-like Yellow Umbrella Movement was not only the matter of politics but also a coincidence created for the Hong Kong locals to face, or to be faced with an already moot cliche： How the Hongkongese can redef＇me and redeem their almost lost socio-cultural identity, particularly under the increasingly hegemonic influences and the socio-cultural invasion of the mainland after the 1997 Handover. My present paper is not intended to discuss the topic of identity on the platform of politics, or the postcolonial studies such as transculturation or cultural hybridty. But instead, I am far more interested in locating such issue on the aesthetic dimension of collective memory, which is revealed in two local contemporary Hong Kong compositions. In the process of shaping and reshaping a form of＂HongKongeseness＂ in which the composers tend to create and the local listeners tend to experience, albeit transient, can appear in every nuance of the sonic metaphor embedded in the pre-existing indigenous tunes of a self-contained compositional work.

Cultural Identities of the Well-Educated Chinese Immigrant Children in the UK

Since the Reform and Opening-up in 1978, China has broadened and deepened its exchanges and relations with other countries. This has contributed to the increase in the migration of well-educated Chinese abroad and United Kingdom （UK） has become a most desirable destination for the elite Chinese immigrants. The impact of the migration of well-educated Chinese deserves particular attention and study, especially the second generation＇s cultural identities--this under-researched topic is the focus of this study. The study investigates the cultural identity differences between Chinese born children （CBC） and British born children （BBC） of the Chinese intellectual families living in Britain. Results indicated that both CBC and BBC had high pride in Chinese and British culture No significant evidence for cultural identity crises was found. The children investigated considered themselves as bi-culturalism and were content with ＂dual identities,＂ with the CBC a bit more Chinese, while the BBC a bit more British. Much smaller differences in views of cultural identity were reported.

A Study of the Chinese Americans＇ Dreams in Gish Jen＇s Typical American

Published in 1991, Jen＇s Typical American depicts a first-generation Chinese immigrant family＇s pursuing their American Dream in the Post-War American society. By choosing Chinese American immigrants as her main characters and describing their struggling in the American society, Jen expresses her understanding of being Americans. In the novel, as they move from ＂sojourners＂ to American citizens, the Chang family shows different attitude towards Chinese and American cultural values. The dreams they pursue also vary. This thesis, through an analysis of the dreams the Chang family pursue in Typical American, attempts to demonstrate how the Chang family identify with their cultural identities in this process, and how they evolve from ＂sojourners＂ to ＂typical Americans＂.

Constructing Chinese Cultural Identity in Confucius School Under Globalization

Confucius school has been labeled as transmitting traditional Chinese culture and been widely accepted in globalization.The present study aims to interpret Chinese cultural identity and soft power of Confucius school from the perspective of national state and to deny Chinese imperi alism by constructing Confucius school in the world.

Impact of Cultural Identity on English learning for Chinese EFL Learners

Based on the literature view of some published articles that report on the impact of cultural identity on English learning for Chinese EFL learners, this paper examines the relationship between cultural identity and language learning. Through the review of earlier researchers, this study points out cultural identity not only influences L1 language learning but also L2 language learning.Although many studies showed that the home cultural identity of the EFL or ESL learners has a negative impact on their English learning, there are also researchers stressing its positive impact on those learners. Finally, the paper makes two instructional suggestions to improve Chinese English competence of EFL learners.

The article delves into the concept of“Chineseness”in contemporary Chinese architecture,a strategic tool for creating distinctive styles rooted in Chinese identity.It serves not only to distinguish projects from market-driven trends but also to establish a pivotal position in the global architectural landscape.“Chineseness”among 24 identified keywords represents a practical strategy embraced by many young architects with international exposure.The traditional Chinese dwelling,a symbol of familial and cultural essence,particularly in the context of home culture,is a primary inspiration for contemporary architects.The research adopts a case study approach,focusing on Tulou-related cases from the last fifteen years,encompassing various building types.The Tulou,a mountain-dwelling with rich cultural connotations,is introduced,reflecting ancient Chinese philosophies in its architectural principles.The case studies,including URBANUS’s“Tulou Collective Housing 2008”and Chengdu’s“Tulou Theater,”demonstrate how Tulou prototypes can be creatively adapted.These designs not only replicate forms but also capture the communal spirit inherent in traditional dwellings.“Stepped Courtyards”by OPEN Architecture reinterprets Tulou typology for a staff dormitory,emphasizing community awareness.In conclusion,the concept of“Chineseness”emerges as a prominent topic,showcasing the dynamic and adaptable nature of traditional Chinese culture and modern architectural expressions.The cases illustrate the evolving intersection between traditional Chinese culture and modern architecture,offering insights into the future trajectory of Chinese architectural culture.The interrelated keywords highlight the nuanced and evolving nature of“Chineseness”in architectural practices.

Translating Culture-Bound Elements:A Case Study of Traditional Chinese Theatre in the Socio-Cultural Context of Hong Kong

This study explores the controversy surrounding the translation of the name of a new cultural infrastructure in Hong Kong,specifically related to the cultural heritage of traditional Chinese theatre.The first performing arts landmark in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District was named the Xiqu Centre;the term xiqu is a Hanyu pinyin representing traditional Chinese theatre.Though this translation issue has been intensely debated for over a decade,it remains unexplored in the research.With reference to Venuti's translation strategies of foreignization and domestication,this study examines the Hong Kong public's views on the translation of the name of this cultural landmark and the underlying drivers of their perceptions.It uses internet-based surveys,semi-structured interviews with the public,and interviews with experts as data sources.The results revealed that factors of(1)aesthetics and artistry,(2)cultural identity,and(3)publicity and internationalization have contributed to public perception.This study^findings shed new light on how translation interacts with cultural,social,and political factors by examining how Hong Kong’s unique historical relationship with China and the West has played a role in this translation issue.The findings have significant implications for the translation of culture-bound elements and the transmission of cultural heritage in Hong Kong and worldwide.

The Woman Warrior汉译本的“文本变形”倾向

美籍华裔作家汤亭亭的小说The Woman Warrior作为流散文学的代表,自问世以来便受到学界关注。一九九八年漓江出版社和二○一八年新星出版社先后出版了两个汉译本,其汉译本同样具有研究价值。我们以法国学者贝尔曼提出的翻译文本变形倾向为框架,分析这一作品在回归中国语境的“回译”过程中两个译本出现的“变形”,并探讨这些变形对于作者“美籍华裔”文化身份的重塑效果以及其身上中国地域文化特色的重现。

论中国式现代化的文化道路问题——国家文化结构视野下由文化认同建构国家认同的逻辑

中国式现代化提出了当代中国国家建构的重大命题,在五千多年文明古国的笼统共识之下,深厚文化传统如何影响或制约国家建构的机制与路径一直没有得到清晰的揭示。国家文化结构理论表明,在中国文化认同型国家结构中,基于长期历史进程中形成的文化认同与国家认同具有天然联系,国家文化议程与国家政治议程纽结在一起,造成了国家建构中从文化认同到国家认同的“路径锁定”。进入近代,发端于西方资本主义的全球化进程将中国这样一个以历史文化传统为根基的文化共同体强行塞进现代民族国家的“强迫性框架”之中,极大弱化了中国经由文化认同建构国家认同的传统纽带,导致了从传统文化危机到国家认同危机的链式反映,动摇了国家结构的稳定性,其影响深广。通过梳理西方民族认同型国家与中国文化认同型国家之间的差异,阐述历史长周期内中国作为文化认同型国家的国家建构逻辑与转型困境,深入揭示出文化认同型国家的国家属性与形态特征,进而阐明全球化视野下以文化认同统筹民族认同和宗教认同的中国特色的国家建构路径,从中西方现代化启动的初始文化条件差异上阐明了中国式现代化道路不同于西方的特殊内涵和根本特征,更加深入地认识“推进中国式现代化作为最大的政治”的深刻内涵,并建构中国式现代化道路的独特理论逻辑。

共情传播视域下中国体育故事跨文化传播的国际认同建构

中国体育故事存在国际认同不足等困境,如何基于文化陌生感的语境建构中国体育故事跨文化传播的国际认同,是亟待思考的现实议题。该研究以共情传播为理论,指出了中国体育故事中的共情元素、共性历史、共同诉求和共通价值,为跨文化传播中建构国际认同提供了共情可能。并以国际认同的建构为导向,构建了中国体育故事跨文化传播中的共情传播模式,认为承载不同价值观、不同主题的中国体育故事,在相应的跨文化传播场域,能够经由共情传播建构国际认同。基于这一模式提出了中国体育故事跨文化传播中建构国际认同的路径:提炼中国体育故事与世界的共情元素,消解认知偏差;从平民视角和他者视角讲述中国体育故事,强化情感认同;强化中国体育交流故事传播中的聚合效应,以共识促认同。

中华优秀传统文化与铸牢中华民族共同体意识:内在逻辑、统合实践与协同路径

中华优秀传统文化与铸牢中华民族共同体意识之间,存有紧密的互补性、统一性和同向性的内在逻辑关联。前者是后者的重要精神养料,后者是前者的发展方向指引,二者在有机统合中,共同组成了中华民族共同体建设在精神文化面向与认同意识面向的重要构件。结合天津市的案例,中华优秀传统文化与铸牢中华民族共同体意识有机统合的实践机制主要在于,围绕“主体对象-传承方式-产业转化-空间区域”四维度,通过锚定各族青少年群体、采用现代化技术手段、深挖民族文化性旅游、扎根民族互嵌式社区,充分发挥中华优秀传统文化的认同化育功能,使铸牢中华民族共同体意识工作得到了有效推进。在有机统合的实践机制基础上,为提升中华优秀传统文化与铸牢中华民族共同体意识的高度协同性,应当依循“认知—认可—认同”三层次路径,把握中华优秀传统文化传承的可及性与系统性,注重中华优秀传统文化发展的时代性与大众性,保持中华优秀传统文化内在的民族性与先进性,在传承发展中华优秀传统文化中铸牢中华民族共同体意识。

A Study on Typical Features of E-Discourse in Chinese

This study aimed to find the typical features of e-discourse of Chinese which are different from other literacy practices.It examined how younger groups of Chinese interact online through online chatting software(QQ) and studies the discursive linguistic strategies and features involved. The findings demonstrated how they adopted and adapted English to interact creatively and playfully in a context with spatio- temporal constraints(Werry 1996) in maintaining and establishing social contact, and to express their cultural identity through code- switching. The speech modifications and linguistic features provided evidence that within the context of Chinese e-discourse can be considered as important attributes of cultural identity.
