Three-dimensional thermohaline structure estimation derived from HY-2 satellite data over the Maritime Silk Road and its applications

Estimated ocean subsurface fields derived from satellite observations provide potential data sources for operational marine environmental monitoring and prediction systems.This study employs a statistic regression reconstruction method,in combination with domestic autonomous sea surface height and sea surface temperature observations from the Haiyang-2(HY-2)satellite fusion data,to establish an operational quasi-realtime three-dimensional(3D)temperature and salinity products over the Maritime Silk Road.These products feature a daily temporal resolution and a spatial resolution of 0.25°×0.25°and exhibit stability and continuity.We have demonstrated the accuracy of the reconstructed thermohaline fields in capturing the 3D thermohaline variations through comprehensive statistical evaluations,after comparing them against Argo observations and ocean analysis data from 2022.The results illustrate that the reconstructed fields effectively represent seasonal variations in oceanic subsurface structures,along with structural changes resulting from mesoscale processes,and the upper ocean’s responses to tropical cyclones.Furthermore,the incorporation of HY-2 satellite observations notably enhances the accuracy of temperature and salinity reconstructions in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and marginally improves salinity reconstruction accuracy in the North Indian Ocean when compared to the World Ocean Atlas 2018 monthly climatology thermohaline fields.As a result,the reconstructed product holds promise for providing quasi-real-time 3D temperature and salinity field information to facilitate fast decisionmaking during emergencies,and also offers foundational thermohaline fields for operational ocean reanalysis and forecasting systems.These contributions enhance the safety and stability of ocean subsurface activities and navigation.

Study on the Protection of Sites of“Maritime Silk Road”in Haikou from the Perspective of World Cultural Heritage

The sites of Maritime Silk Road in Haikou City are composed of sites of navigation and trade,religious temples and stone monuments,urban construction and coastal defense scattered on the south bank of the Qiongzhou Strait.They played a key role in the formation and shaping of the settlements in Haikou City,recorded the process of intercommunication and integration between Chinese civilization and other regional cultures,and witnessed the germination,flourishing and inheritance of Haikou’s unique marine culture.The mixture of points,lines and planes blends with the urban area and coastline of Haikou City in spatial distribution.In this paper,from the perspective of world cultural heritage,some suggestions for the protection planning of sites of Maritime Silk Road in Haikou City were proposed based on the analysis of historical and geographical background,comparison of domestic and foreign similar sites,and evaluation of cultural heritage value.

Analysis of Thai Chinese Businessmen’s Identification With China in the Context of Maritime Silk Road Development-Take a Cover Interview of@ManGu Bangkok,a Mainstream Chinese Language Magazine in Thailand as an Example

Thai Chinese businessmen are important practitioners and supporters of China’s construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road,serving as important trendsetters among ASEAN countries with great significance.In this context,this paper analyses and presents the image of Thai Chinese businessmen and their identification with China under the framework of the report and discourse by taking the cover interview of the Chinese mainstream magazine@ManGu Bangkok in Thailand as an example,to show the sentiment and sense of belonging of overseas Chinese to their ancestral homeland,and to provide an emotional“link”for China and ASEAN countries in the mutually beneficial cooperation.

Construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road:Present Situation,Opportunities,Problems and Solutions

The 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road is an important part of China's new landscape of all-round opening-up,responding to the joint demands of both China and many countries in Southeast Asia,South Asia and Africa.This paper examines countries and regions along the 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road and makes an in-depth study of their typical economic conditions,opportunities for cooperation with China,as well as related existing problems.There are opportunities in five areas for China to further cooperate with relevant countries and regions; industrial investment,infrastructure investment,resource development,overseas economic & trade zones and maritime economic development.There are also three outstanding problems; poor coordination among executive agents,insufficient financial support and lack of a sound and complete talent team.This paper offers several suggestions concerning the construction of the 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road to better fit the national conditions and joint demands of China and the countries and regions involved.

On the Link Between Ancient Sichuan and the Maritime Silk Road from the Perspective of Tang Poetry

Shu(now Sichuan Province in the southwest of China) was famous for silk production.Many poets of the Tang Dynasty praised the magnificence of Shu brocade and embroidery.They also meticulously recorded the good sales and popularity of Shu's mulberry silk fabrics in Jinling(now Nanjing) and Yangzhou through shipments along the Yangtze River and further to Southeast and South Asian countries.Tang poetry provides evidence for the significant role the Shu area played in the trade and commerce of the Maritime Silk Road.

Australia's Synergy with the“21st Century Maritime Silk Road”Initiative and Its Prospect

Australia's development and infrastructure plans have synergy with China's 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative, and their political, economic, trade, financial and civil exchanges have deepened bilaterally. From Text to Field:Study on the Intercultural Communication of Music in Collection of Chinese Works and Translations by Matteo Ricci from the Perspective of Maritime Silk Road

In this paper,with Collection of Chinese Works by Matteo Ricci written by Zhu Weizheng and A summary Interpretation of Chinese literature of Matteo Ricci in Ming and Qing Dynasties written by Tang Kaijian as major research texts and historical basis,as well as intercultural communication as the major research method,the aesthetic adaptation of native music of traditional Chinese music,etiquette,sacrifice and religious customs under the description of Matteo Ricci is discussed and interpreted from the perspective of the spread of musical culture of the Maritime Silk Road,four stages of field investigation are planned,and related musical activities and local musical phenomena appearing in his literature have an on-site visit.In this way,the vital position and historical significance of Matteo Ricci’s cultural missionary activities in the music communication on the Maritime Silk Road are obtained.

The analysis of gales over the “Maritime Silk Road” with remote sensing data

The 21st century ＂Maritime Silk Road＂ strategy is a significant part of the belt and road initiatives of China. The cognition and investigation of ocean environment is essential and necessary in these regions which will provide scientific reference for many fields such as navigation, ocean engineering, and disaster prevent and reduction. A high-resolution cross-calibrated multi-platform wind product is used to analyze gales over the Maritime Silk Road. The yearly mean speed and space distribution of gale, and the frequencies and trends of gale and extreme wind speed are analyzed. The results show that relatively high pools of gale are mainly located in the waters of the Arabian Sea, the Somali Sea, Indo-China Peninsula sea area, and Bay of Bengal in the summer. The gale frequency of the Somali Sea is more than 90%. Overall, the gale days increase year by year in the majority of the South China Sea and the northern Indian Ocean, especially in the autumn and the winter.

Hazard analysis of tsunami disaster on the Maritime Silk Road

The Maritime Silk Road is not only a passageway for business and trade, but also the road of friendship between eastern and western civilizations. The Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 caused major damage to several coastal countries. Tsunami occurrence regularity and hazard analysis are needed to ensure economic and cultural exchange on the Maritime Silk Road. To explore and identify tsunami hazard on the Maritime Silk Road, the spatial and temporal characteristics of historical tsunami events were given out. Some useful information hidden in historical tsunamis was searched from source parameters, such as seismic magnitude, focal depth and water depth. The tsunami possibility in the case of earthquake occurrence was also studied, exploring the probability of tsunami caused by different magnitudes. The analysis result shows that tsunamis on the Maritime Silk Road mainly occurred in 8 major tectonic faults, each of which has different tsunami occurrence regularity. On the basis of statistical analysis, a numerical model was used to simulate the potential tsunamis and show the tsunami hazard levels along the coast of Maritime Silk Road. The research results of this paper can help the tsunami early warning and ensure the safety of economic and cultural exchanges on the Maritime Silk Road.

Analysis of Dynamic Characteristics of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road

The 21st century Maritime Silk Road(MSR) proposed by China strongly promotes the maritime industry. In this paper, we use wind and ocean wave datasets from 1979 to 2014 to analyze the spatial and temporal distributions of the wind speed, significant wave height(SWH), mean wave direction(MWD), and mean wave period(MWP) in the MSR. The analysis results indicate that the Luzon Strait and Gulf of Aden have the most obvious seasonal variations and that the central Indian Ocean is relatively stable. We analyzed the distributions of the maximum wind speed and SWH in the MSR over this 36-year period. The results show that the distribution of the monthly average frequency for SWH exceeds 4 m(huge waves) and that of the corresponding wind speed exceeds 13.9 ms^(-1)(high wind speed). The occurrence frequencies of huge waves and high winds in regions east of the Gulf of Aden are as high as 56% and 80%, respectively. We also assessed the wave and wind energies in different seasons. Based on our analyses, we propose a risk factor(RF) for determining navigation safety levels, based on the wind speed and SWH. We determine the spatial and temporal RF distributions for different seasons and analyze the corresponding impact on four major sea routes. Finally, we determine the spatial distribution of tropical cyclones from 2000 to 2015 and analyze the corresponding impact on the four sea routes. The analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the MSR provides references for ship navigation as well as ocean engineering.

Study on the Synergy Policies of “Maritime Silk Road” Initiative

Based on the rapid promotion of"Maritime Silk Road"and the proposal of the Belt and Road initiative by China,this empirical study established the initiative of"Maritime Silk Road"economic entity through the participation of small and medium enterprises in trades along the maritime silk road.The study filled the gap of research on maritime economy in China,put forward the"maritime economy"priority development initiative,and thus discovered whether it's feasible to promote regional integration-the inspiration of maritime economy;it is of great significance in the economic sense to find out that how to face the interference of trade related to leading powers,and the inspiration of the manufacturing industry for maritime economy along the Belt and Road.

Management of Chinese Foreign Direct Investment：＂One Belt, One Road＂ Across Eurasia to Africa and Europe Amidst Maritime Tensions in the South China Sea Region

Outward Foreign Direct Investment （OFDI） from the People＇s Republic of China （＂China＂） has been expandingworldwide, much as Inward Foreign Direct Investment （IFDI） from the world into China has burgeoned, at leastuntil very recently. Global FDI declined worldwide in 2014, with China＇s IFDI declining less than many placeselsewhere, resulting in China overtaking the United States as the world＇s most attractive location for FDI for thefirst time since 2003, before India overtook China in 2015 （Iyengar, 2015）. In 2014, meanwhile, for the first time,China＇s OFDI exceeded its IFDI, rendering it a net exporter of FDI, signaling the end of the approach to the end ofChina as a developing nation （Yao ＆ Wang, 2014）. What does this mean？ More than anything else, one mustconsider two factors in assessing China＇s 21st century foreign ambitions： Is its One Belt, One Road （OBOR） ageopolitical tetrahedron as some allege, if so, economically or militarily？ Is its maritime policy across the WesternPacific Rim of Asia aimed at constructing a fleet of surface cruisers and submarines to wage a guerre de course（war of the chase）, much as German vice admiral Wolfgang Wegener urged Imperial Germany to do in world War Ithen Nazi Germany to do in World War II, in an effort to dominate merchant sea routes thereby disrupting supplieswithout recourse to a ＂balanced fleet＂ such as Britain possessed in World Wars I and II and the United Statesoperates currently？ Both China＇s ＂New Silk Road＂ and the ＂New Maritime Silk Route＂ are at the root of ageopolitical tetrahedron. Chinese domination of the South China Sea and to a lesser extent of the East China Searegions signals its potential guerre de course strategy. Is there an antidote to conflict in Asia, if so, what is it？

LEGACY OF WORKING TOGETHER The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road was first proposed in Indonesia with good reason

“Since ancient times,Southeast Asia has been an important hub along the ancient Maritime Silk Road,”declared Chinese President Xi Jinping in a speech at the People’s Representative Council of Indonesia,at the invitation of Speaker Marzuki Alie of the House of Representatives,on October 2,2013.“China will strengthen maritime cooperation with ASEAN countries to vigorously develop maritime partnership in a joint effort to build the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.”

Empowering the Belt and Road with Energy and Resource Cooperation

The China-proposed Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road,as a grand initiative for deepening regional cooperation with countries along the routes,cover various fields including economics,society and culture.But among them,energy and resource cooperation is the most practical and feasible way for the Belt and Road to take root,given the economic endowment,development needs and complementary advantages of the various countries concerned,as well as the existing foundation and conditions for cooperation between China and countries along the routes.Therefore,energy and resource cooperation should be a focus and priority for China when exploring cooperation with the Belt and Road countries,and it should be advanced through concrete measures.

China's Seaport Diplomacy: Theories and Practice

China has developed a new chain of commercial seaports along the Maritime Silk Road. These ports are unlike those used by overseas military bases of the United States. While the former focuses on the economic development of China and other involved countries through investment, trade, infrastructure construction and international shipping center development, the latter is at the service of the U.S. security strategy underpinned by goals to strengthen alliances, fight terrorism, expand influence and support proxies. China has gained extensive experience from its seaport reform. Opening-up programs like the "Shekou model" promote business opportunities in addition to the essential services, and define the port area as the "frontier", the industrial park as the "middle ground", and the port city as the "backyard". Based on such experience, China is ready to contribute to the development, peace and stability of emerging countries along the Maritime Silk Road and explore seaport diplomacy with Chinese resilience, diligence and foresight. China's seaport diplomacy is market-oriented and involves companies as key players. It is also supported by government coordination. Seaport diplomacy has increased connectivity and interdependence between countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road, and helps avoid the "zero-sum game" and the "core-peripheral" asymmetrical relationship of dependence. China's participation in the development of seaports along the Maritime Silk Road has facilitated the industrialization process of the countries involved and benefited local communities. This approach stands in sharp contrast to the maritime militarization and democratization pursued by some Western countries. Nevertheless, China's participation in the development of seaports along the Maritime Silk Road also faces economic, legal, political, and security risks. Thus, caution should be given to the tendency to politicize China's seaport development.

基于ERA5再分析系统海上丝绸之路海况及波高周期联合分布特征

利用欧洲中期天气预报中心的ERA5再分析系统,基于2012—2022年时间分辨率为1 h的全球气象资料,对海上丝绸之路沿线典型海域进行海况分析。利用我国东南海域、孟加拉湾海域和阿拉伯海域的实测数据验证ERA5资料的有效性和准确性,获得该目标海域风、浪共同限制条件下各季节海况情况。统计得到各季节平均多年海上丝绸之路沿线波浪特征分布规律,并统计分析我国南海、孟加拉湾和阿拉伯海各典型海域的有效波高与谱峰周期联合分布概率。研究结果表明,ERA5数据能较好地反映目标海域的海况特征;工程施工过程中需重点关注夏季波浪波高及全年长周期波浪的影响;我国东南沿海和阿拉伯海整体海况条件较好,孟加拉湾海况较为复杂,有效波高在1.5 m与谱峰周期在10s以上在85%以上,在前期投资规划时需重点关注。
