Pharmacological Investigation on the Qi-Invigorating Action of Schisandrin B: Effects on Mitochondrial ATP Generation in Multiple Tissues and Innate/Adaptive Immunity in Mice

Schisandrae Fructus, containing schisandrin B (Sch B) as its main active component, is recognized in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for its Qi-invigorating properties in the five visceral organs. Our laboratory has shown that the Qi-invigorating action of Chinese tonifying herbs is linked to increased mitochondrial ATP generation and an enhancement in mitochondrial glutathione redox status. To explore whether Sch B can exert Qi-invigorating actions across various tissues, we investigated the effects of Sch B treatment on mitochondrial ATP generation and glutathione redox status in multiple mouse tissues ex vivo. In line with TCM theory, which posits that Zheng Qi generation relies on the Qi function of the visceral organs, we also examined Sch B’s impact on natural killer cell activity and antigen-induced splenocyte proliferation, both serving as indirect measures of Zheng Qi. Our findings revealed that Sch B treatment consistently enhanced mitochondrial ATP generation and improved mitochondrial glutathione redox status in mouse tissues. This boost in mitochondrial function was associated with stimulated innate and adaptive immune responses, marked by increased natural killer cell activity and antigen-induced T/B cell proliferation, potentially through the increased generation of Zheng Qi.

Poly(ionic liquid)-crosslinked graphene oxide/carbon nanotube membranes as efficient solar steam generators

Graphene oxide(GO)is regarded as a promising candidate to construct solar absorbers for addressing freshwater crisis,but the easy delamination of GO in water poses a critical challenge for practical solar desalination.Herein,we improve the stability of GO membranes by a self-crosslinking poly(ionic liquid)(PIL)in a mild condition,which crosslinks neighbouring GO nanosheets without blemishing the hydrophilic structure of GO.By further adding carbon nanotubes(CNTs),the sandwiched GO/CNT@PIL(GCP)membrane displays a good stability in pH=1 or 13 solution even for 270 days.The molecular dynamics simulation results indicate that the generation of water nanofluidics in nanochannels of GO nanosheets remarkably reduces the water evaporation enthalpy in GCP membrane,compared to bulk water.Consequently,the GCP membrane exhibits a high evaporation rate(1.87 kg m^(-2)h^(-1))and displays stable evaporation rates for 14 h under 1 kW m^(-2)irradiation.The GCP membrane additionally works very well when using different water sources(e.g.,dye-polluted water)or even strong acidic solution(pH=1)or basic solution(pH=13).More importantly,through bundling pluralities of GCP membrane,an efficient solar desalination device is developed to produce drinkable water from seawater.The average daily drinkable water amount in sunny day is 10.1 kg m^(-2),which meets with the daily drinkable water needs of five adults.The high evaporation rate,long-time durability and good scalability make the GCP membrane an outstanding candidate for practical solar seawater desalination.

Photoinduced Second Harmonic Generation of Bi_2S_3 Microcrystallite Doped Silica Glass

Silica glasses doped with Bi2S3 microcystallite was prepared by the sol-gel process. Photoinduced second harmonic generation (SHG) was observed in the glass when it was irradiated with intense 1.06 mum and frequency doubled laser beams from a mode-locked Nd: YAG laser. It was found that the signal intensity increased with the irradiating time and approached a saturation gradually. The effect may be explained reasonably by the DC field model.

Methane Generation and Capture of U.S.Landfills

Analysis of the U.S.EPA(Environmental Protection Agency)database of 2,549 MSW(Municipal Solid Waste)landfills showed that there were 1,164 operating landfills in which 348 million short tons(316 million metric tons)of waste were landfilled in 2017.In total,these landfills occupy about 370 million square meters of land so it is not possible to monitor the generation of LFG(Landfill Gas)generation accurately,or collect most of the LFG generated.This study was based on the hypothesis that,on the average,methane generation is proportional to the tonnage of wastes landfilled annually.The Landfill Methane Outreach Program of the EPA(EPA-LMOP)compiles annual operating data of all methane-capturing landfills.Our analysis of the 2018 data for 396 LMOP operating landfills showed that 210 million short tons of wastes were deposited and 5.06 million short tons of methane were captured,i.e.,an average capture of 0.024-ton CH4/ton waste.On the basis of the anaerobic reaction of the DOC(Degradable Organic Carbon)in landfilled wastes,the average rate of methane generation from all operating U.S.landfills was estimated to be 0.05 ton of CH4 per ton of annual capacity;this number corresponds to bioreaction of about one half of the total organic carbon in MSW.On this basis,the average rate of CH4 emission from the 396 LMOP landfills was estimated to be 0.026-ton CH4 per annual ton of deposition and the average efficiency of LFG capture,48%.Adding up all 1,164 operating landfills,their total emission of methane was estimated at 11.9 million metric tons of CH4.At CH4/CO2 equivalence of 25,this number corresponds to CO2-eq emissions of 270 million metric tons,i.e.,5.1%of the U.S.energy related carbon dioxide emissions.

Complete Real Solution of the Five-orientation Motion Generation Problem for a Spherical Four-bar Linkage

For a spherical four-bar linkage,the maximum number of the spherical RR dyad（R：revolute joint）of five-orientation motion generation can be at most 6.However,complete real solution of this problem has seldom been studied.In order to obtain six real RR dyads,based on Strum＇s theorem,the relationships between the design parameters are derived from a 6th-degree univariate polynomial equation that is deduced from the constraint equations of the spherical RR dyad by using Dixon resultant method.Moreover,the Grashof condition and the circuit defect condition are taken into account.Given the relationships between the design parameters and the aforementioned two conditions,two objective functions are constructed and optimized by the adaptive genetic algorithm（AGA）.Two examples with six real spherical RR dyads are obtained by optimization,and the results verify the feasibility of the proposed method.The paper provides a method to synthesize the complete real solution of the five-orientation motion generation,which is also applicable to the problem that deduces to a univariate polynomial equation and requires the generation of as many as real roots.

α-Synuclein pathology from the body to the brain:so many seeds so close to the central soil

α-Synuclein is a protein that mainly exists in the presynaptic terminals.Abnormal folding and accumulation of α-synuclein are found in several neurodegenerative diseases,including Parkinson’s disease.Aggregated and highly phospho rylated a-synuclein constitutes the main component of Lewy bodies in the brain,the pathological hallmark of Parkinson s disease.For decades,much attention has been focused on the accumulation of α-synuclein in the brain parenchyma rather than considering Parkinson s disease as a systemic disease.Recent evidence demonstrates that,at least in some patients,the initial α-synuclein pathology originates in the peripheral organs and spreads to the brain.Injection of α-synuclein preformed fibrils into the gastrointestinal tra ct trigge rs the gutto-brain propagation of α-synuclein pathology.However,whether α-synuclein pathology can occur spontaneously in peripheral organs independent of exogenous α-synuclein preformed fibrils or pathological α-synuclein leakage from the central nervous system remains under investigation.In this review,we aimed to summarize the role of peripheral α-synuclein pathology in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease.We also discuss the pathways by which α-synuclein pathology spreads from the body to the brain.

Accounting for Quadratic and Cubic Invariants in Continuum Mechanics–An Overview

The differential equations of continuum mechanics are the basis of an uncountable variety of phenomena and technological processes in fluid-dynamics and related fields.These equations contain derivatives of the first order with respect to time.The derivation of the equations of continuum mechanics uses the limit transitions of the tendency of the volume increment and the time increment to zero.Derivatives are used to derive the wave equation.The differential wave equation is second order in time.Therefore,increments of volume and increments of time in continuum mechanics should be considered as small but finite quantities for problems of wave formation.This is important for calculating the generation of sound waves and water hammer waves.Therefore,the Euler continuity equation with finite time increments is of interest.The finiteness of the time increment makes it possible to take into account the quadratic and cubic invariants of the strain rate tensor.This is a new branch in hydrodynamics.Quadratic and cubic invariants will be used in differential wave equations of the second and third order in time.
