From the perspective of analysis-synthesis translation mode, this paper discusses the translator’s responsibility and the translator’s role in the translation of historiography, based on the case of Ko Kung-chen’s History of Chinese Journalism.Missionary J.S.Roberts believed that translation is the logical combination of two processes of analysis and synthesis. The analysis process is characterized by understanding, emphasizing accurate understanding and professional analysis of the source text, while the synthesis process focuses on the transformation of language and culture. The two processes are dependent, forming the whole process of translation altogether. As the indisputable subject of translation, the translator should assume his own subjective responsibility in the two processes. The translator should be responsible for the fact and professional academics in the analysis process, and language and culture and translation itself in the synthesis process, playing the role of a reviewer, disseminator and translator to ensure that the translation text would be correct, accurate and professional so as to realize the value of himself and translation. 展开更多

In order to promote the exchange of Chinese culture with foreign countries, translators bear an important mission in the process of cross-cultural communication.Although there are cultural differences,we can achieve cultural dissemination and exchange through continuous cultural dialogue. As an important way for foreign scholars to understand the history of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties in China, the translation of historical texts is crucial.Multiple typical cases are selected under the guidance of the translation theory of compensation to use relevant methods or techniques from the three levels of language, culture, and aesthetics to compensate for the loss of Li Xueqin’s The Origin of Ancient Chinese Civilization in English translation proofreading. 展开更多

This paper examines the metaphorical part of“The Jade King:History of a Chinese Muslim Family”,Hoda’s novel, under the guidance of Newmark’s theory of metaphor.Newmark proposes six categories of metaphors, namely Dead Metaphor,ClichéMetaphor,Stock or Standard Metaphor,Adapted Metaphor,Recent Metaphor,Original Metaphor;and seven strategies of metaphor translation, including reproducing the same image in the target language, replacing the image in the source language with a standard target language image, translation of metaphor by simile, translation of metaphor(or simile)by simile plus sense, conversion of metaphor to sense, deletion and same metaphor combined with sense. They can provide a strong theoretical support for analyzing the expressions of metaphors in novels and their translation methods.By deeply analyzing the expressions of metaphor and its translation methods in novels,it not only helps to understand the metaphorical meaning and cultural connotation of the original works, but also helps to explore the cultural differences and challenges faced by English and Chinese bilingualism in the process of metaphor translation, thereby significantly improving the translation level and promoting the development of translation research. 展开更多

In order to convey complete meanings, there is a phenomenon in Chinese of using multiple running sentences.Xu Jingning(2023,p.66)states,“In communication,a complete expression of meaning often requires more than one clause, which is common in human languages.”Domestic research on running sentences includes discussions on defining the concept and structural features of running sentences, sentence properties, sentence pattern classifications and their criteria,as well as issues related to translating running sentences into English. This article primarily focuses on scholarly research into the English translation of running sentences in China, highlighting recent achievements and identifying existing issues in the study of running sentence translation. However,by reviewing literature on the translation of running sentences,it is found that current research in the academic community on non-core running sentences is limited. Therefore, this paper proposes relevant strategies to address this issue. 展开更多

Since the early 1970s,discourse analysis has garnered significant attention across various academic disciplines, marked by the proliferation of numerous theoretical frameworks. Then the profound impact of discourse analysis on the field of translation research has become increasingly apparent, with a substantial body of translation studies embracing the discourse analysis approach. The disciplinary significance of discourse analysis has become undeniable.Contemporary China is in a relatively weak position in global cultural communication. To advance Chinese culture on the global stage,Chinese literary works serve as a precious channel. To effectively showcase the unique qualities of Chinese literature, translators must consider a multitude of influencing factors and address them judiciously to enable target language readers to fully immerse themselves in the essence of Chinese literary artistry. This paper takes Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s translation of Kong Yiji as an example to elucidate the function of discourse analysis in translation of Chinese literature. 展开更多

It is universally acknowledged that the holy Bible has played a significant role in both Christianity and literature field. In China, translating Bible also enjoyed a long history and so far over 30 Chinese Bible translations have been produced. Along with age-old Bible translating practices in China come with varied Chinese Bible versions, due to the fact that different translators adopt different translational skopos. Skpos theory, mainly coined by Vermeer, has been quite popular in recent years. This purpose-based translation theory has ignited paradigm shift in translation study from the source text to target text. This paper will be attempting to conduct a comparative study of two most popular modern Chinese Bible versions, CUV (Chinese Union Version) and TCV (Today's Chinese Version). By comparing two versions of the same extract, this article aims to apply Skopos theory into analyzing each translator's decisions and strategies from domestication and foreignization. 展开更多

As a cross-linguistic,cross-cultural,and cross-social activity, translation is affected by cultural moralities.Since the ethical standard of faithfulness has been abandoned by theories of cultural criticism and the power of translators’manipulation has been constantly exaggerated, the study of translation ethics is an effective remedy for a current dilemma in translation studies. It is a common phenomenon for some translators to erase the linguistic and cultural differences of Chinese literature by catering to target readers’reception.Social ethics is the foundation of a nation’s translation ethics, which means that thoughts from the Western world may not be suitable for the current situation in China.Learning from concepts of Chinese philosophy including harmony in diversity, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and honesty to formulate a new translation ethics will surely restrain translators’subjectivity within appropriate limits and develop world culture in more harmonious fashion. 展开更多

As a beak with the traditional "prescriptive" approach and an important complement to translation theories, translation norms thus open up a descriptive and target-oriented perspective for the translation practice and study. For the successful access of the translation text into the target culture, the translator has to make choices between two languages, texts and cultures, etc.. Thus the translation norms are revealed. This paper shows the operation of translation norms as seen from the English version of Chinese classics by KU Hung-ming and analyzes why KU Hung-ming's translation of Confucian classics such as Lun Yu and Zhong Yong enjoyed greater popularity among Western readers than the translation of Western missionaries. The paper also holds that the unfaithful translations regarded by a source text-oriented approach were actually where KU was most successful in implementing his translation strategies to achieve expressiveness. 展开更多

The image of Jews,as the“other”,constructed in Oliver Twist by Dickens and reconstructed in its Chinese translation by Wen’an He(1977/1997)1 is studied at the level of lexical items from the perspective of imagology in this paper.Lexical items involving the image of Fagin, the representative of Jews, are negative in the source work.In translating the lexical items to reconstruct Fagin’s image, the translator retains the features of irony and vulgarity carried with them. So,the image of Fagin is generally transported into the target culture basically unchanged. However, due to the translator’s individual reason or the social background of China at that time, those lexical items with religious connotation in the source text are translated without explanation, and as a result, the image of Jews constructed by this kind of lexical items fails to be conveyed to the target readers. 展开更多
