Explanation of Academic Achievement Based on Personality Characteristics Psycho-Social Climate of the Classroom and Students’ Academic Engagement in Mathematics

This research explains academic achievement based on the personality characteristics, the psycho-social climate of the classroom in terms of academic engagement in mathematics. The population was high schoolboys and girls in Damghan city in Iran. Participants were randomly selected using a multi-stage cluster method (513 boys and girls) and they simultaneously completed three questionnaires: academic engagement, the psycho-social climate of the classroom and personality characteristics. Path analysis was used to analyze data. The results showed that the direct effects of personality characteristics and psycho-social climate of the classroom on academic achievement were not significant. The direct effects of openness, conscientiousness and psycho-social climate of classroom on academic engagement were significant. The indirect effects (with mediation of academic engagement) and overall effects of openness, conscientiousness and psycho-social climate of classroom on academic achievement were significant, also the effect of academic engagement on academic achievement was significant. 展开更多

The economic crisis in 1997-1998 increased poverty to 49.5 million,but in 2005 decreased to 35.10 million,then in 2006 increased 39.05 million.The worst communities were workers,dependent families,small farmers and fishermen,informal sector workers,low-level civil servants,and people affected by natural disasters.The research design was cross sectional;the research was in Pangkal Pinang City in January 2016.The data were summarized by interview,observation,documentation,and Focus Group Discussion.Data analyses were flow model,product moment,and Likert scale.The result of the research shows the correlation between how to obtain the poor scholarship and the criteria of obtaining the poor scholarship that is very tight which is 0.453.The relation between the criteria of obtaining the poor scholarship and the determination of the poor scholarship is quite close which is 0.218.The relationship between the determination of the scholarship for poor students and obtaining the poor scholarship is 0.395.The correlation between how to get the poor scholarship and the poor scholarship receiver is quite close that is 0.190.The relationship between the determination of the poor scholarship and the impact of the poor scholarship is quite close that is 0.171.The relationship between using of the poor scholarship and the poor scholarship receiver is very close that is 0.297.The relation between the poor receiver and the impact of poor the scholarship is 0.270. 展开更多

Characteristic Changes Defined via Comparison of the Big-Five Personalities in Japanese University Freshmen from Years 2000 to 2016

Introduction: With the arrival of the 21st century, drastic worldwide changes to natural, economic and social events have occurred. These include the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the global financial crisis. Furthermore, Japan experienced the introduction of a specific education system. In this study, we traced and compared the psychological characters of university freshmen for 16 years (years 2000-2016) using Big-Five personalities inventory (Japanese version). Methods: A total of 1189 physically and mentally healthy university freshmen participated in this study. They were divided into four groups according to the year they entered university. They completed a self-filled questionnaire, Big-Five personalities inventory, which consists of Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Conscientiousness and Openness. Result and Discussion: Compared with the year 2008, Extraversion nominally increased in 2012, however, it statistically significantly decreased in 2016. Agreeableness notably decreased from 2000 to 2008, then showed an increase in 2012. Compared to 2000, Neuroticism was statistically significantly lower in 2008 and 2016. Such statistically significant differences were not observed in the other two personalities. The personalities of university freshmen have changed in the last 16 years, which may be been caused by drastic changes. However, further research (e.g., larger-scale studies or studies including other university students) is required to support the current findings. 展开更多

The study examined the status of senior secondary schools’students’achievement in Civic Education and English Language in Osun State.It also investigated the Civic Education and English Language teachers’characteristics in the state and determined the teaching styles of Civic Education and English Language teachers in the study areas and finally assessed the influence of teachers’characteristics and teaching styles on students’achievement in secondary schools Civic Education and English Language.The study adopted Discriminant Analysis.The study sample consisted of 600 senior secondary school students,30 Civics teachers,and 30 English Language teachers that were selected using multi-stage sampling procedure.Four instruments were constructed and validated before use.Three research questions were asked and answered while one hypothesis was tested and verified.The results among others showed that more than 50%of the students that participated in the study had high status of achievement in Civic Education while more than 40%of English Language students that participated in the study had low status of achievement.The study also showed that teachers’characteristics pertinent to both Civic Education teachers and English Language teachers were,effective discipline skills(Civics,M=1.20,SD=0.407;English,M=1.40,SD=0.498)and good communication with parents(Civics,M=1.43,SD=0.504;English,M=1.40,SD=0.498).In addition,there was significant influence of teachers’characteristics and teaching styles on students’achievement in Civics and English Language in senior secondary schools(X^2(2)=16.37,p<0.05).The study concluded that teachers’characteristics and teaching styles are major determinants of students’achievement in Civic Education and English Language. 展开更多

The main goal of this research was the scrutiny of relationship between students’ personality characteristics and mental health at the University of Guilan. The population was the students of the Faculty of Humanities in 2009 with 3000 which 196 were selected using Kerjeci & Morgan table and stratified sampling method. They answered to the NEO and GHQ questionnaires. Results showed that there was relationship between personality characteristic of neurotic, openness, extraversion and being conscionable with mental health. Meanwhile, openness had the highest and extraversion with the lowest correlation scale and most of students (65%) had low mental health. Also, there were no significant differences among students with respect to different courses but significant difference with respect to gender and age. 展开更多

The aim of this research lies on comparing anxiety body image profiles between male and female university students. A total sample of 2089 freshmen—902 women and 1187 men is from the different degrees offered by the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, with an average age of 18.23 ± 0.74 years. The approach used in the research is part of a quantitative design with a survey description. The differences found between men and women regarding their own perception of anxiety suggest that when designing any kind of intervention that aims at the decreasingly perceived anxiety, the gender variable will have to be taken into account. Future investigations should respond to these discoveries in larger samples. 展开更多

For this purpose the author used questionnaire as research instrument. Data as a value to interest, word of mouth and family background variables, was gathered from high school students in Jakarta metropolitan. Further, data was analyzed using multiple groups on Lisrel software. Result shows that there's difference on the influence of word of mouth on computer/IT career interest based on family background. Model relationship between word of mouth and student interest towards computer/IT is moderated by parent education and birth order. 展开更多

20世纪80年代之后国际上逐渐发展形成的中国学习者研究,注重在国际比较视野中分析中国学生学习的特点和特性,是国际学界对中国研究的延续和深化。近年来,以中国大学生学习与发展追踪研究(CCSS)项目为代表,中国学者开始参与和推动本领域... 20世纪80年代之后国际上逐渐发展形成的中国学习者研究,注重在国际比较视野中分析中国学生学习的特点和特性,是国际学界对中国研究的延续和深化。近年来,以中国大学生学习与发展追踪研究(CCSS)项目为代表,中国学者开始参与和推动本领域研究,在实证分析的基础上尝试构建本土学生学习理论,形成了探索构建中国学生学习乃至教育学自主知识体系的本土力量。CCSS项目持续15年的实施和研究,呈现出从主动选择性引进海外知识开始,在理念、概念和工具层面逐步推进本土化,通过深入挖掘源于本地的实证数据,发现本土特色教育现象并进行情境性分析,在此基础上进行本土模型构建和理论抽象的过程。这为建构中国教育学自主知识体系带来如下启示:重视对全球知识的了解、鉴别和本土重塑,关注围绕本土重大问题的实证研究,在与全球知识的对话中凸显研究的普遍意义,并且在高校人才培养中传承和创新。 展开更多
