Study of the reaction mechanism for preparing powdered activated coke with SO_(2)adsorption capability via one-step rapid activation method under flue gas atmosphere

In this study,the impact of different reaction times on the preparation of powdered activated carbon(PAC)using a one-step rapid activation method under flue gas atmosphere is investigated,and the underlying reaction mechanism is summarized.Results indicate that the reaction process of this method can be divided into three stages:stage I is the rapid release of volatiles and the rapid consumption of O_(2),primarily occurring within a reaction time range of 0-0.5 s;stage II is mainly the continuous release and diffusion of volatiles,which is the carbonization and activation coupling reaction stage,and the carbonization process is the main in this stage.This stage mainly occurs at the reaction time range of 0.5 -2.0 s when SL-coal is used as material,and that is 0.5-3.0 s when JJ-coal is used as material;stage III is mainly the activation stage,during which activated components diffuse to both the surface and interior of particles.This stage mainly involves the reaction stage of CO_(2)and H2O(g)activation,and it mainly occurs at the reaction time range of 2.0-4.0 s when SL-coal is used as material,and that is 3.0-4.0 s when JJ-coal is used as material.Besides,the main function of the first two stages is to provide more diffusion channels and contact surfaces/activation sites for the diffusion and activation of the activated components in the third stage.Mastering the reaction mechanism would serve as a crucial reference and foundation for designing the structure,size of the reactor,and optimal positioning of the activator nozzle in PAC preparation. 展开更多

A process of purification of coal-based coke powder as anode the treatment of coke powder with dilute hydrofluoric acid solution, for Li-ion batteries was attempted. The process started with followed by united-acid-leaching using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. The effects of altering the hydrofluoric acid addition, hydrofluoric acid concentration, contact time, temperature and acid type were investigated. A minimum ash content of 0.35% was obtained when proper conditions were applied. The electrochemical performance of purified coke powder shows greatly improved electrochemical performance. The as-purified coke powder presented an initial reversible capacity of 257.4 mAh/g and a retention rate of 95% after 50 cycles. The proposed purification process paves a way to prepare a promising anode material with good performance with low cost of coke powder for Li-ion batteries. 展开更多

The oxidation behavior of different SiAlON phases(β-SiAlON,X-phase SiAlON and 12H powders) synthesized from coal gangue in air atmosphere was investigated using isothermal thermogravimetry(TG) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM).The effect of ferric oxide impurities in coal gangue was studied.The results show that ferric oxide contributes to the growth of SiAlON crystalline during the synthesis process.In the oxidation experiment,the existence of ferric oxide decreases the oxidation resistance of SiAlON.The reason is that the impurity causes the formation of a liquid phase at a higher temperature.At 1423-1623 K,the oxidation of SiAlON powders is diffusion controlled and it can be described by Chou's model.A fair agreement is found between theoretical calculations and the experimental data. 展开更多

The study on the evaporation kinetics of zinc and lead in the pellets made of ZnPbbearing dust mixed with carbon ,in nitrogen atmosphere at the temperature range between 1 100 and 1 300 , shows that the reduction temperature has a significant effect on the evaporation rates of zinc and lead and that both the particle size of coal powder and the extra carbon content have no effect on the evaporation rates . The obtained activation energies for the evaporation of zinc and lead are 7942 kJ/mol and 8874kJ/mol respectively. The evaporation rate of zinc is controlled by the reaction between zinc oxide and CO while that of lead is controlled by lead volatilization and the diffusion of gaseous lead through gas boundary layer covering the surface of liquid lead. 展开更多

The effects of the various moisture contents on the measurement results were also discussed. The experimental results show that the standard deviation is less than 0.36% when the moisture content of coal powder is 0.74%-16.90% and the standard deviation is less than 0.16% when the moisture content is 0.31%-1.49%. The experimental results indicate that a process of quick measurement moisture content of coal powder by microwave is practical. 展开更多

The effects of several parameters, such as the primary air percentage, excess aircoefficient, bed temperature, Ca/S molar ratio and mass ratio of petroleum coke to coal on SO_2emission were verified. Experimental results show that when the ratio of petroleum coke to coal inthe mixed fuel increases, the SO_2emission increases. The maximum SO_2 emission appears when purecoke burns. The SO_2 concentration in flue gas reduces with the increase in the primary airpercentage, excess air coefficient and Ca/S molar ratio for all kinds of fuel mixtures. Therangebetween 830 t and 850 t is the optimal temperature for sulfur retention during co-firing ofpetroleum coke and coal with the mass ratio R of 1 and 3 in CFB. 展开更多

Coke plant effluents with high contents of organic compounds are mainly treated by biological aerobic fermentation after physical pre-treatment. In this study, a brown coal condensate wastewater from a low temperature coking process was fermented under methanogenic conditions in discontinuous experiments. By this fermentation, acetate, propionate, and the main polyphenolic compounds (catechol, resorcinol and hydroquinone) were degraded to a level below the detection limit. The COD was reduced by 72% with a residual concentration of 2.1 g/L. This anaerobic fermented wastewater had a residual BOD5 of 0.66 g/L and 2.2 L CH4 were formed per litre of wastewater. An abiotic pre-treatment for this wastewater with air had a negative effect on the COD reduction and decrease of colour on the methanogenic fermentation due to the autoxidation of polyphenolic compounds to humic-like compounds. This study showed that methanogenic fermentations in the treatment sequence of brown coal coking wastewaters could reduce energy consumption for aeration in further treatment processes and had the potential for a better effluent quality due to a less formation of recalcitrant humic-like compounds. 展开更多

We applied the reflectivity method and the constrained sparse spike inverse modeling(CSSI) method to the interpretation of coal field lithologic seismic data.After introducing the principles of these two methods we discuss some parameters of a geological model involving possible gas enriched areas or intruded igneous rock.The geological model was constructed and a 60 Hz seismic response profile was obtained looking for igneous rock intrusion and coked areas of the coal seam using the reflectivity method.Starting from synthesized logging data from two wells and a synthesized seismic wavelet we calibrated the model to show accurate strata.Finally,we predicted the lithology within a 10 m igneous rock area,a 3 m coal seam area,and a coked area using the CSSI technique.The results show that the CSSI technique can identify hard to recognize lithologic features that normal profil-ing methods might miss.It can quantitatively analyze and evaluate the intrusive area,the coked area,and the gas-enriched area. 展开更多

The adsorption of methyl orange onto ultrafine coal powder (UCP) and modified ultrafine coal powder (MUCP) from aqueous solutions were studied, in which the influence of contact time, dosage, temperature, pH, and methyl orange concentration in the solution were investigated. The adsorption kinetics of methyl orange by UCP and MUCP can be described by the Lagergren first-order and pseudo second-order kinetic models, respectively. The adsorption isotherms of methyl orange onto MUCP at 303, 313 and 323 K follow the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm equation. Values of △G^0 for methyl orange adsorption onto MUCP are -22.55, -23.10 and -23.79 kJ·mol^-1 at 303, 313, and 323 K, respectively. The values of △H^0 and △S^0 are -3.74 kJ· mol^-1 and 61.99 J·mol^-1, respectively. The adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. 展开更多

The utilization of high-sulfur coal is becoming more urgent due to the excessive utilization of low-sulfur,high-quality coal resources,and sulfur removal from high-sulfur coal is the most important issue.This paper reviews the speciation,forms and distribution of sulfur in coal,the sulfur removal from raw coal,the thermal transformation of sulfur during coal pyrolysis,and the sulfur regulation during coal-blending coking of high organic-sulfur coals.It was suggested that the proper characterization of sulfur in coal cannot be obtained only by either chemical method or instrumental characterization,which raises the need of a combination of current or newly adopted characterization methods.Different from the removal of inorganic sulfur from coal,the organic sulfur can only be partly removed by chemical technologies;and the coal structure and property,particularly high-sulfur coking coals which have caking ability,may be altered and affected by the pretreatment processes.Based on the interactions among the sulfur radicals,sulfur-containing and hydrogen-containing fragments during coal pyrolysis and the reactions with minerals or nascent char,regulating the sulfur transformation behavior in the process of thermal conversion is the most effective way to utilize high organic-sulfur coals in the coke-making industry.An in-situ regulation approach of sulfur transformation during coal-blending coking has been suggested.That is,the high volatile coals with an appropriate releasing temperature range of CH4 overlapping well with that of H2 S from high organic-sulfur coals is blended with high organic-sulfur coals,and the C–S/C–C bonds in some sulfur forms are catalytically broken and immediately hydrogenated by the hydrogencontaining radicals generated from high volatile coals.Wherein,the effect of mass transfer on sulfur regulation during the coking process should be considered for the larger-scale coking tests through optimizing the ratios of different coals in the coal blend. 展开更多

Coke powder is expected to be an excellent raw material to produce activated carbon because of its high carbon content. Potassium hydroxide(KOH), as an effective activation agent, was reported to be effective in activating coke powder. However, the microstructures development in the coke powder and its mechanisms when KOH was applied were still unclear. In this study, effects of KOH on the microstructure activation of coke powder were investigated using the surface area and pore structure analyzer, scanning electron microscope(SEM) and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry-mass spectrometry(TG-DSC-MS), etc. Results revealed that the addition KOH at its lower ratio(mass ratios of KOH and coke powder in a range of 0.5 and 1) decreased the specific surface area and average lateral sizes, but sharply increased of the specific surface area to 132 m^2·g^-1 and 355 m^2·g^-1 and decreased of the space size of aromatic crystallites upon the further increase of the KOH addition amounts(ratios of KOH and coke powder in a range of 3 and 7), generating a number of new micropores and mesopores. The mechanisms study implied surface reactions between KOH and aliphatic hydrocarbon side chain and other carbon functional groups of the coke powder to destruct aromatic crystallites in one dimension and broaden pores at lower KOH addition. In the activation process, KOH was decomposed to be more active components, which can be rapidly destruct the aromatic layers in spatial scope to form developed porous carbon structures within coke powder at higher KOH addition. 展开更多

The coal with low moisture during carbonization could not only increase the yield of coke,but also promote the coke quality and reduce the energy consumption.In this paper,the influence of the moisture in the blend coal(1.8%10.13%)on the product yields and coke quality during coal carbonization were investigated.The results show that the coke yield is increased from 75.90%to 77.16%,and the coke qualities such as coke strength after reaction with CO2(CSR),coke reactivity index(CRI),fragmentation index(M25)and abrasion index(M10))are also improved when the moisture of the blend coal decreases from 10.13%to 1.80%in a bench scale reactor.Due to the secondary reaction,tar become lighter when the moisture is decreased.In order to further prove the above results,the blend coal with 1.8%and 9%10%(common moisture used in coke plant)moisture is carbonized in a coke oven with 6 m height,the results show that CRI are 23.4%and 27.3%,CRS are 67.1%and 62.2%under 1.8%and 9%10%moisture of blend coal.Moreover,the variation of the moisture in blend coal has a limited influence on dust emission at the ascension pipe and the charging car. 展开更多

Two Nigerian coals, Lafia-Obi and Chikila were blended in the mass ratio of 70:30 with imported American and Polish coking coals. Proximate analysis, free swelling index, Ruhr dilatometer and Gieseler plastometer were used in assessing the coking qualities of both the single coals and the blends. The results show that the blends are lower in moisture and ash contents;higher in volatile matter and fixed carbon than the single Nigerian coals. The rheological parameters revealed superiority in thermo-plastic properties of the blends over the unblended local coals. Lafia-Obi/Foreign coals blends possess lower ash and better rheological properties compared to Chikila/Foreign coal composites which have high ash and poor rheological properties. These together suggest that amongst the two Nigerian coals, Lafia-Obi is superior for blending with the foreign ones in metallurgical coke production. 展开更多

The coal resources of Nigeria occur mainly within the Benue Trough which includes the Anambra Basin. In the Lower Benue Trough/Anambra Basin, sub-bituminous coals occur within the Maastrichtian Mamu Formation in Enugu (Enugu State), Owukpa (Benue State), Okaba (Kogi State) and Ogboyaga (Kogi State). High-volatile bituminous coals occur within the Turonian-Coniacian Awgu Formation in the Middle Benue Trough around Obi/Lafia (Nasarawa State) with outcrop exposures at Jangwa-Shankodi. Organic petrographic results show that huminites dominate the maceral composition of the Anambra Basin coals and have vitrinite reflectance values that range from 0.40% to 0.63 Ro%. In the coals from the Middle Benue Trough, vitrinite macerals predominate the petrographic composition and Ro values range from 0.81% to 1.25%. Based on the petrographic composition and rank evaluation, the sub-bituminous coals in Enugu, Owukpa, Okaba and Ogboyaga (Anambra Basin) are optimum for combustion and electric power generation and sub-optimum for liquefaction, while the high-volatile bituminous coals in the Obi/Lafia area (Middle Benue Trough), apart from being optimum for liquefaction, are the most suitable as raw material for coke making (carbonization) in steel manufacture and as exploration targets for coal-bed methane gas and liquid hydrocarbons. 展开更多

A new technology for recycling EAF dust and removal of sulfur from coking oven gas was investigated. The new technology does not need to set up special equipment to treat COG (coke oven gas), and it is only acquired by mixing the ZnO base additive into the coke coal. In the stage of pyrolysis of the coal volatile, ZnO of the additive combines with H 2S, CS 2, COS and C 2H 2SH of coal gas, forming ZnS in coal char. In the stage of coking of the coal char, Zn is gasified with S, then the gas Zn react with H 2S, CS 2, COS and C 2H 2SH, forming ZnS in coal gas and depositing as dust. After the collected ZnS dust was regenerated, it can be recycling as the additive again. The sulfur in coal gas can be completely removed if the mole ratio of the added Zn to the volatilized S is more than 1, and the sulfur in coke is also slightly decreased comparing with the coke without the additive. The EAF dust containing ZnO and Fe 2O 3 can be the base material of the desulfurizing additive. 展开更多
