Implicature is a universal feature of human communication.In conversations,it is common to see examples of something unsaid but communicated.After introducing the theory of conversational impilcature and its four maxims,this paper presents English and Chinese examples to compare their conversational implicature,and finds conversational implicature exists in both Chinese and English conversation.

The Contrasts of English Sentences and Chinese Sentences and Translation Skills

Since the opening-up policy was carried out in 1979, every facility of social modernized construction has developed at high speed; meanwhile, the need of English is increased year by year. The occasion and scope of using it are expanded with the communications among countries. Therefore, English has become the generally international language in our country; in particular, translation plays an important and irreplaceable part in English to convey information. A Contrastive Study of the Phatic Communion in English and Chinese

Through the comparative analysis of the phatic communion in English and Chinese,we found that they have similar functions in their language,but the basic form and content have a big difference.This article introduces definition of phatic communion,explains that the pragmatic difference is the reflection of cultural differences between China and Western countries.

Contrastive Analysis on Unmarkedness of English and Chinese Passives from the Perspective of Markedness Theory

Markedness refers to the asymmetric phenomenon in a linguistic category. Unmarked item, compared with marked item,is more natural, more neutral, more fundamental, and has higher using frequency and wider distribution. From the perspective of markedness theory, the study, collecting 86 English passives and 85 Chinese passives(including 35 notional passives and 50 Beisentences), contrastively analyzes the unmarkedness of English and Chinese passives from the aspects of patient animacy, emotional color, and tense through example-illustration and description. The analysis shows that the unmarkedness of English and Chinese passives has different expressions in the three aspects. Inanimate patient has stronger unmarkedness in both English and Chinese passives, for it is more frequently-used than animate patient. According to people's cognition and language using habits, the emotional color of English passives and Chinese notional passives is neutral in most cases, so the neutral emotional color is unmarked.But in Chinese Bei-sentences, negative emotional color has stronger unmarkedness. As for the tense expression, English passives have wider distributions in time span and simpler structure than Chinese passives. Thus, English passives possess stronger unmarkedness in the light of tense. According to the analysis, the study proposes feasible advice for second language acquisition and translation.

Comparatives, superlatives, hedges, numerals, quantifiers and pronouns are also used in advertisements.

The thesis is a comparative study of empty pronouns between English and Chinese under the frame work of GB theory.Following the introductory part,the existence of PRO and pro has been researched in both English and Chinese.Then,the two kinds of empty pronouns are respectively compared between the two languages.A comparison has been made between English and Chinese in terms of their generation,distribution,classification,reference and interpretation to explore both the similarities and differences.Disputable issues have been covered and we tried to find out a solution.As a whole,English shares the same classification with Chinese except for pro.They do not have substantial differences in property,but PRO used in the two languages have distinction in concrete sentence structures.Since English possesses no pro,we have focused on its presence in Chinese.This total difference can clearly show us the difference between the two languages.This thesis aims at exploring the distinctive features and properties of English and Chinese by comparison so as to bring enlightenment to the translation in this aspect and gain a better understanding of the two languages in the structure.

A Morphological Comparison Between Chinese and Japanese Abbreviations

This paper compares the Chinese and Japanese abbreviations from the perspective of morphology and analyzes the causes of the popularity of abbreviations in modern society.The study shows that there are similar types of abbreviation formation(direct omission of the original word,extraction and combination,and number abbreviation)in the two languages,while in addition to the English alphabet abbreviations,there are“Pinyin”acronyms in Chinese and Roman alphabet abbreviations in Japanese.This study may be helpful in assisting the learners of two languages to further understand the culture of two countries,so as to better promote cultural exchanges.
