Mapping What They Know: Concept Maps as an Effective Tool for Assessing Students’ Systems Thinking

In 2006 anew biology curriculum called “Human Biology: Emphasizing the Role of Homeostasis” was introduced into the Israeli high school system. Complex systems like those that make up the human body have become increasingly important as a focus of high school education. This study examines the effectiveness of the concept map as a assessment tool for students’ systems thinking, a tool that provides researchers with a detailed picture of the systems thinking development taking place within individual students. The content of the students’ concept maps was translated into information about students’ system thinking using the Systems Thinking Hierarchy (STH) model, a model in which system thinking is categorized according to eight hierarchical characteristics or abilities. The goal was to use the maps to characterize Israeli high school students’ understanding of the body’s systemic nature. To do this, we identified the extent to which the students understand three central elements of systems, namely hierarchy, homeostasis, and dynamism, and then analyzed this understanding according to its place within the hierarchical stages of the STH model. The extensive qualitative data analysis of 48 concept maps made by 11th grade biology majors suggest that the strength of the concept map is in its ability to describe the first two levels of system thinking (analysis and synthesis). However, it proved less successful in eliciting evidence of the third and highest level, particularly of students’ understanding of patterns, of homeostasis and their capacity for temporal thinking. 展开更多

In order to establish this relation, the researcher illustrates the role of Aristotle's categories in influencing the concept of the Medieval Latin "modistae". This is followed by a reevaluation of the influence of Arabic philosophers, such as al-Farabi (c.870-c.950 CE), Avicenna (980-1037 CE) and Averoes (c.1126-c.1198 CE) on Latin philosophy and linguistics, especially Jurjani's (d.1078 CE) role in introducing his concept of "nazm" towards "ma'ani nahwi". The research contributes to the understanding of the relationship between syntax and semantics which has not been effectively clarified within the framework of traditional Arabic grammatical theory. 展开更多

Our paper presents a project that involves two research questions: does the choice of a related problem by the tutorial system allow the problem solving process which is blocked for the student to be restarted? What information about learning do related problems returned by the system provide us? We answer the first question according to the didactic engineering, whose mode of validation is internal and based on the confrontation between an a priori analysis and an a posteriori analysis that relies on data from experiments in schools. We consider the student as a subject whose adaptation processes are conditioned by the problem and the possible interactions with the computer environment, and also by his knowledge, usually implicit, of the institutional norms that condition his relationship with geometry. Choosing a set of good problems within the system is therefore an essential element of the learning model. Since the source of a problem depends on the student’s actions with the computer tool, it is necessary to wait and see what are the related to problems that are returned to him before being able to identify patterns and assess the learning. With the simultaneity of collecting and analysing interactions in each class, we answer the second question according to a grounded theory analysis. By approaching the problems posed by the system and the designs in play at learning blockages, our analysis links the characteristics of problems to the design components in order to theorize on the decisional, epistemological, representational, didactic and instrumental aspects of the subject-milieu system in interaction. 展开更多

目的探讨成果导向教育(outcome based education,OBE)理念下任务驱动教学法在儿科护生带教中的作用。方法根据随机数表法,将2022年3月—2022年6月在重庆医科大学附属永川医院儿科见习的76名护生分为观察组、对照组,各38名。对照组采用... 目的探讨成果导向教育(outcome based education,OBE)理念下任务驱动教学法在儿科护生带教中的作用。方法根据随机数表法,将2022年3月—2022年6月在重庆医科大学附属永川医院儿科见习的76名护生分为观察组、对照组,各38名。对照组采用常规教学法,观察组采用OBE理念下任务驱动教学法。比较2组考核成绩、自我导向学习能力(self-rating scale for self-directedness in learning,SRSSDL评分)、核心能力(competency inventory for registered nurse,CIRN评分)与批判性思维(critical thinking disposition inventory‐Chinese version,CTDI-CV评分)、教学评价以及护理质量(service quality,SERVQUAL评分)。结果教学结束后,与对照组相比,观察组考核成绩、SRSSDL评分、CIRN评分、CTDI-CV评分以及SERVQUAL评分均较高,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。观察组教学好评率与对照组教学好评率对比,差异无统计学意义(P>0.05)。结论应用OBE理念下任务驱动教学法不仅能有效提升护生的综合素养,培养其自我导向学习能力,锻炼其核心能力与批判性思维,还有助于儿科护理质量的提升,且深受护生认可。 展开更多
