Dragon Boat Festival herbal markets in the Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of southwestern Guizhou have a long well-conserved history.These markets,which are a feature of Buyi and Miao traditional medici...Dragon Boat Festival herbal markets in the Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of southwestern Guizhou have a long well-conserved history.These markets,which are a feature of Buyi and Miao traditional medicines,contain a rich diversity of medicinal plants and traditional medical knowledge.Today,people in southwestern Guizhou still believe that using herbs during the Dragon Boat Festival prevents and can treat disease.In this study,we identified the fresh herbal plants sold at the herbal markets of Xingren City and Zhenfeng County in Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and quantified their importance.We identified 141 plant species(belonging to 114 genera and 61 families).The plant family with the most species was Asteraceae(14 species).Informants reported that most medicinal plants are herbaceous,with 95.7%of plants used for decoction and 30.5%used for medicinal baths.Medicinal plants are most commonly used to treat rheumatism,injury,and abdominal diseases.The utilization frequency index and relative importance values indicated that Artemisia argyi and Acorus calamus are the most important plants sold at herbal markets during the Dragon Boat Festival.The price of medicinal materials sold in the market may serve as an indicator of the conservation status of species in the region.These findings indicate that the Dragon Boat Festival herbal markets in the Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture fully embodies the characteristics of indigenous ethnomedicine and culture,and also exhibits the diversity of plant resources.We recommend that rare and endangered plants in this region be domesticated and protected.展开更多
Guangdong suffered from the most serious precipitation of its corresponding time during the dragon-boat race of 2008 since 1951.The relationship between the strong dragon-boat precipitation in 2008 and atmospheric low...Guangdong suffered from the most serious precipitation of its corresponding time during the dragon-boat race of 2008 since 1951.The relationship between the strong dragon-boat precipitation in 2008 and atmospheric low-frequency oscillation was analyzed with the methods of wavelet analysis,correlation and Lanczos filter.Results showed that the daily rainfall exhibits a significant 7 to 12-day quasi-periodic oscillation(namely quasi-10-day oscillation) during the precipitation,the daily 500 hPa height over Guangdong exhibits a significant 8 to 13-day quasi-periodic oscillation,and the daily 850 hPa zonal wind averaged over the north of the South China Sea presents a significant quasi-12-day periodic oscillation.The Guangdong rainfall during the annually first rainy season is most closely correlated with monsoon over the north of South China Sea,and less closely with an upper-level trough at 500 hPa affecting Guangdong.Strong monsoon surges induced two heavy rainfall processes in 2008.The monsoon surges joined with a westward-propagating quasi-10-day oscillation that originated from the central Pacific and was enhanced in a strong convective region east of the Philippines and a northward-propagating monsoon that originated from the southern South China Sea was enhanced.With composite analysis of typical phases,the common evolution characteristics of atmospheric circulation of the two heavy rainfall processes were analyzed for different phases.These features can be used as reference for medium prediction of heavy rainfall processes in Guangdong.展开更多

This article identified values and creative culture for community health promotion through the use of boat racing in Wiang Sa district, Nan province, which is located in Northern Thailand as the case study. The author...This article identified values and creative culture for community health promotion through the use of boat racing in Wiang Sa district, Nan province, which is located in Northern Thailand as the case study. The author applied qualitative method to reveal the possibilities of community-based health care. The in-depth interview and participatory observation were adopted to investigate the context, problems, and current situation from the stakeholders during May to October 2013. The results showed that Wiang Sa district hold the traditional boat racing for more than 177 years. Before 1979, the boat racing was a traditional village collective activity, after that, the tradition has transformed into sports game in which the promotion of community health and tourism has been introduced. Values of boat racing of the people in the community included: (1) Aesthetic value--the unique characteristics of the regatta; (2) spiritual value--religious rites and relating rituals which was the source of the regatta; (3) social value--participation in various stages of racing from mutual thinking and practicing, and benefits among the group of villagers at various ages. Today, the regatta become a social symbol characterized by the community creative culture in many areas: promoting village cooperation, increasing social harmony, valuing the role of women, stimulating non-alcohol racing scheme, creating sharing collective activities for the youth and the elderly, etc. The health promotion, even though it only occurs in a short time of the racing course, especially among the rowers, it is considered as the beginning of building a positive attitude towards community health promotion through the use of the regatta as a social innovation.展开更多
