The current study investigates a group of Chinese undergraduates’perceptions of Chinese culture.It examines the discourses that the students drew on to assign meaning to Chinese culture and how the students used thes...The current study investigates a group of Chinese undergraduates’perceptions of Chinese culture.It examines the discourses that the students drew on to assign meaning to Chinese culture and how the students used these discourses in constructing their Chinese cultural identity.A qualitative study was conducted collecting written self-reflective reports on critical intercultural incidents from 39 Chinese undergraduates at a university in Beijing.Questions designed to evoke reports from the students had them describe incidents in their past intercultural experiences that made them acutely aware of themselves“being Chinese”and specify aspects of Chinese culture that they felt such awareness could be attributed to.A discourse analysis reveals the multiplicity and contextuality of the students’notions of Chinese culture.The findings raise important considerations for contemporary Chinese undergraduates’cultural identity and their much debated“identity crisis.”展开更多

This paper defines the notion of discourse ideology in the practice of translation, highlights the relationship between discourse ideology and the translator's subjectivity, and illustrates the translation strategies appropriate to the context of publicity of Chinese minority culture to the readers outside China. A tentative conclusion is drawn that the top-down approach from discourse ideology to translation strategies and the bottom-up approach from translation strategies to discourse ideology complement with each other in the Chinese-to-English translation of publicity on Chinese minority culture.展开更多
The debate on the marketization of discourse in higher education has sparked and sustained interest among researchers in discourse and education studies across a diversity of contexts.While most research in this line ...The debate on the marketization of discourse in higher education has sparked and sustained interest among researchers in discourse and education studies across a diversity of contexts.While most research in this line has focused on marketized discourses such as advertisements,little attention has been paid to promotional discourse in public institutions such as the About us texts on Chinese university websites.The goal of the present study is twofold:first,to describe the generic features of the university About us texts in China;and second,to analyze how promotional discourse is interdiscursively incorporated in the discourse by referring to the broader sociopolitical context.Findings have indicated five main moves:giving an overview,stressing historical status,displaying strengths,pledging political and ideological allegiance,and communicating goals and visions.Move 3,displaying strengths,has the greatest amount of information and can be further divided into six sub-moves which presents information on campus facilities,faculty team,talent cultivation,disciplinary fields construction,academic research,and international exchange.The main linguistic and rhetorical strategies used in these moves are analyzed and discussed.展开更多

China’s booming economy is indeed one of the main reasons for the popularity of learning Chinese as a foreign language(henceforth CFL).With this growing interest in CFL,Ireland is likely to be behind global trends as...China’s booming economy is indeed one of the main reasons for the popularity of learning Chinese as a foreign language(henceforth CFL).With this growing interest in CFL,Ireland is likely to be behind global trends as Chinese is not yet included as a State-examined subject at any level in the Irish schooling system.Chinese language teaching(henceforth CLT)began to develop significantly in formal UK schooling during 2004-2005(Zhang&Li,2010),whereas the earliest occurrence of CLT seen in the Irish education system was in 2006-2007 when two Confucius Institutes were set up in Ireland.During this time,Mandarin Chinese was also introduced first as a subject and later as a degree in some higher education institutions in Ireland.The current study reviews the past and present of CLT in Ireland at second and tertiary level.This information,together with survey data collected among approximately 3,700 students learning CFL in Irish schools as a subject not examined by the State,provides recommendations for a future State-examined CFL course to be introduced to Irish secondary schools.These recommendations include items such as contact hours,tasks,and content to be implemented in the classroom.Further recommendations are also supplied in relation to the bridging of secondary and tertiary-level CLT.These recommendations come in light of former Irish Minister for Education Richard Bruton's announcement that Chinese will be taught on the State-examined school curriculum as part of the Languages Connect strategy plan.展开更多

The findings demonstrated how they adopted and adapted English to interact creatively and playfully in a context with spatio- temporal constraints(Werry 1996) in maintaining and establishing social contact, and to express their cultural identity through code- switching. 文摘The current study investigates a group of Chinese undergraduates’perceptions of Chinese culture.It examines the discourses that the students drew on to assign meaning to Chinese culture and how the students used these discourses in constructing their Chinese cultural identity.A qualitative study was conducted collecting written self-reflective reports on critical intercultural incidents from 39 Chinese undergraduates at a university in Beijing.Questions designed to evoke reports from the students had them describe incidents in their past intercultural experiences that made them acutely aware of themselves“being Chinese”and specify aspects of Chinese culture that they felt such awareness could be attributed to.A discourse analysis reveals the multiplicity and contextuality of the students’notions of Chinese culture.The findings raise important considerations for contemporary Chinese undergraduates’cultural identity and their much debated“identity crisis.”
文摘Discourse ideology refers to the position, attitude and guideline employed by a writer or speaker constructing a discourse in relation to the readers/hearers. This paper defines the notion of discourse ideology in the practice of translation, highlights the relationship between discourse ideology and the translator's subjectivity, and illustrates the translation strategies appropriate to the context of publicity of Chinese minority culture to the readers outside China. A tentative conclusion is drawn that the top-down approach from discourse ideology to translation strategies and the bottom-up approach from translation strategies to discourse ideology complement with each other in the Chinese-to-English translation of publicity on Chinese minority culture.

文摘The debate on the marketization of discourse in higher education has sparked and sustained interest among researchers in discourse and education studies across a diversity of contexts.While most research in this line has focused on marketized discourses such as advertisements,little attention has been paid to promotional discourse in public institutions such as the About us texts on Chinese university websites.The goal of the present study is twofold:first,to describe the generic features of the university About us texts in China;and second,to analyze how promotional discourse is interdiscursively incorporated in the discourse by referring to the broader sociopolitical context.Findings have indicated five main moves:giving an overview,stressing historical status,displaying strengths,pledging political and ideological allegiance,and communicating goals and visions.Move 3,displaying strengths,has the greatest amount of information and can be further divided into six sub-moves which presents information on campus facilities,faculty team,talent cultivation,disciplinary fields construction,academic research,and international exchange.The main linguistic and rhetorical strategies used in these moves are analyzed and discussed.
文摘This paper discusses the genesis and transference of Traditional Chinese Medicine from China and Asia to Europe.It looks specifically at the ways in which TCM was initially discovered and how it reach medical circles in Europe.It also looks at the reasons why it became popular in the historical context and specifically at the presence of TCM in Britain.Finally,this paper briefly traces the booms and slumps in the popularity of TCM and its place in modern medical practices in the Uk and Europe.
文摘Uniqueness of our political systems and tremendous changes brought about by reform and opening up are reflected in language use,so contem porary Chinese political discourse has its own distinctiveness,and is especially featured by increasing political neologisms,posing difficulties for interpreters and for China’s international publicity.Quality of political neologisms interpreting has a direct bearing on whether or not success of interpreting the whole discourse can be achieved.The authors believe that interpreting of contemporary Chinese political discourse,also for the purpose of com m unication can gain guidance from Bachman’s CLA Model.So the paper elaborates through exem plification on strategies for interpreting political neologisms in light of Bachm an’s Model,with a view to realizing discourse power of Chinese.

文摘Contemporary Chinese scholars proposed that China should construct modem Chinese aesthetic discourse system, therefore, we should attach great importance to China's own aesthetic development in 20th century and learn experience from it. There are four dimensions of learning. First, we should seek the origin of methods from Marxism. Second, the study should deeply rooted in Chinese traditional culture. Third, we should refer to ancient and modem Western aesthetic theories. Last but not the least, all the scholars should be encouraged to express their views freely and equally. The four dimensions, which plays an important role in constructing China's modem discourse of aesthetics, derived from the conclusion and experience of China's modem aesthetic development in 20th century.
文摘China’s booming economy is indeed one of the main reasons for the popularity of learning Chinese as a foreign language(henceforth CFL).With this growing interest in CFL,Ireland is likely to be behind global trends as Chinese is not yet included as a State-examined subject at any level in the Irish schooling system.Chinese language teaching(henceforth CLT)began to develop significantly in formal UK schooling during 2004-2005(Zhang&Li,2010),whereas the earliest occurrence of CLT seen in the Irish education system was in 2006-2007 when two Confucius Institutes were set up in Ireland.During this time,Mandarin Chinese was also introduced first as a subject and later as a degree in some higher education institutions in Ireland.The current study reviews the past and present of CLT in Ireland at second and tertiary level.This information,together with survey data collected among approximately 3,700 students learning CFL in Irish schools as a subject not examined by the State,provides recommendations for a future State-examined CFL course to be introduced to Irish secondary schools.These recommendations include items such as contact hours,tasks,and content to be implemented in the classroom.Further recommendations are also supplied in relation to the bridging of secondary and tertiary-level CLT.These recommendations come in light of former Irish Minister for Education Richard Bruton's announcement that Chinese will be taught on the State-examined school curriculum as part of the Languages Connect strategy plan.
文摘Based on the contrastive analysis of Chinese and English modes of thinking, this essay analyzes from two aspects the effects of their discrepancies on the discourse organization of Chinese students ' English writing, then explains the fundamental reason for these effects and proposes that teachers should impart to students knowledge about the differences between Chinese and English mode of thinking so that Chinese students can be better helped to organize their compositions on the English discourse patterns and compose idiomatic English writings.

文摘This study aimed to find the typical features of e-discourse of Chinese which are different from other literacy practices.It examined how younger groups of Chinese interact online through online chatting software(QQ) and studies the discursive linguistic strategies and features involved. The findings demonstrated how they adopted and adapted English to interact creatively and playfully in a context with spatio- temporal constraints(Werry 1996) in maintaining and establishing social contact, and to express their cultural identity through code- switching. The speech modifications and linguistic features provided evidence that within the context of Chinese e-discourse can be considered as important attributes of cultural identity.
