This paper concerns study of learning strategies from language learners. In the light of the types and models of strategies found in the study of ESL (English as a Second Language) learners' strategies abroad, the authors have summed up and induced 3 group learners' writing strategies stated in their reports, with which they have designed the surveying tool by using factor analysis. And then, the authors use descriptive and 1-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) analysis of SPSS16.0 (Statistical Program for Social Science) to examine the differences of strategies used by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners in China, overseas Chinese ESL learners in Northern Americas and Northern American ENL (English as a Native Language) learners. It is concluded by he results of the study that ENL and ESL learners are good at using various writing strategies. And there are significant differences in using writing strategies between ENL/ESL learners and EFL learners. The authors also conclude that the differences between ESL group and ENL group are not significant, much less than the ones between ESL group and EFL group. The authors make comparative analysis on the causes to the findings on the aspects of class teaching approaches and language learning surroundings, which bring out implications for teaching of English writing in China. 展开更多

Using imagery as a strategy for language learning may be helpful to encode linguistic forms into conceptual networks for long-term memory. Based on Arwood's neuroeducation model of language learning, this research evaluated the effect of imagery in Chinese character writing by English-speaking adolescent students. After comparing imagery effects under three instructional conditions (i.e., English translation, pictorial presentation, and verbal-contextual interpretation), the results showed that the use of imagery predicted significantly better writing results in the immediate and one-week writing tests, but not in the four-week writing test. Cognitive analyses found that imagery was commonly used as a mediational strategy in the pictorial and verbal-contextual methods in the early learning phases. The pictorial method mainly elicited perceptual visual patterns which failed to support sustained memory. For a better character encoding and retrieval, images had to be generated associated with sufficient and relevant contextual information. 展开更多

The difficulties in learning Chinese faced by non-Chinese students are the subjects of concern in the education sector, especially in writing Chinese characters. We write the characters with strokes and dots, more or less strokes or dots will represent different words and different meanings. Students found these very complicated and confused, thus it leads them to lose their motivation and interest in learning Chinese language. From the beginning of the 1990s, I began using origami as one of the activities to promote the teaching of Chinese in the state school in Melbourne Australia with remarkable results. Program got widely reported by Medias. In 1995, I got the "National Excellence in Teaching Awards". After I took up the position as the curriculum development officer in University of Hong Kong in 2007, I worked closely with the teachers and students using origami as the theme base learning in Chinese. It helps to increase their understanding of the radicals and parts, so as to improve their confidence in writing Chinese characters. 展开更多

At the intermediate and advanced stage of the international Chinese education, Chinese writing is one of the important skill courses, one of the difficulties of learning Chinese. For a long time, because its acquisition is so difficult, but it cannot get rid of the inefficiencies and a lack of attraction of the traditional pen and paper training, it has become one of the teaching problems to be solved urgently in teaching research community. In the non-target language environment, the use of limited time and space in the classroom to training students' Chinese writing skill is an important task of the intermediate and advanced Chinese teaching. At the cultural environment in Westem Europe, learners' awareness of democracy and freedom are very strong, they are active, rich in their thinking, the interesting, challenging, and immersive of training activities are more attractive to students Immersion teaching design of the Chinese writing course is such a lively, fun, and interactive new design. This paper discusses the design method and a characteristic of immersion teaching Chinese writing course in the non-target language environment, analyzes its design basis and practice principles, and puts forward some suggestions on the application of this type of design. 展开更多

The evolution of tools plays a very important role in promoting the development of a kind of painting and can even shape the development. In the process of the development of Chinese painting, the emergence and improvement of writing brush and xuan paper have directly led to the reform of the categories and methods of Chinese painting.During this period, the relationship between Chinese painting art and the medium of water is getting closer and closer. The uncontrollability of water also provides more possibilities for the uniqueness and changeable pen and ink effect of Chinese painting. It can be said that without the unique tools and medium of Chinese painting, the art of Chinese painting may lose its most important support. 展开更多

What constitutes the most effective marking of EFL learners' writing in secondary schools is still the focus of EFL teachers. Traditional feedback is not as successful as it is expected to be because students haven't concerned themselves with the teacher's comments too much.LIFT(Learner Initiated Feedback Technique), as a creative means of enhancing marking, has been tested and adopted in foreign language teaching. Through the introduction of current conditions of marking of EFL writing, selfcorrection, peer-marking and feedback workshop in EFL secondary classrooms are proposed in light of the theory of LIFT. 展开更多

The influence of the first language(L1)on the acquisition of a second language(L2)is inevitable. In addition, when L1 and L2 do not belong to the same language family,a negative influence,i.e.,an interference, will occur. The current study aims to investigate the level of accuracy and grammar complexity in texts written by Chinese upper secondary school students from the perspective of language transfer. It involves an analysis of a small corpus comprising 54 texts with the use of the terminable unit(T-unit)measure.The finding shows that the Chinese writers produced a text with only a few error-free T-units largely due to the syntactical transfer from Chinese to English. With regard to grammatical complexity, subordinate clauses are frequent in the corpus but relative clauses are rare. 展开更多

Writing fluently and expressively in English is a necessary skill for communication, as well as a required skill for Chinese students at the tertiary level. Since college students have already been trained on their Chinese writing skills for a considerable length of time and are able to write in Chinese quite successfully, the application of contrastive rhetoric in the teaching of English writing is very effective. This paper explores the possibility of teaching English writing to Chinese students at the tertiary level and proposes an approach to this teaching model. 展开更多

With growing numbers of Chinese students entering Western universities, cultural understanding is of increasing importance, not least in higher education. Without a good understanding of the academic conventions of Western universities, Chinese students, and undergraduates in particular, are at a disadvantage in the multi-cultural classroom. Lack of knowledge of structural influences on higher education, including teacher-student relations, reference management practices, and assessment procedures, are likely to lead to failure and disappointment. This paper, which is based on writing workshops conducted at Beijing University and in Sweden (Kristianstad University and Linnaeus University) in 2014, focuses primarily on writing practices and conventions because written texts are the main means of assessment in higher education. Addressing four key problems encountered by Chinese undergraduate writers in Western universities, namely lack of familiarity with the structure of academic papers, lack of focus on relevant issues, copying and pasting without giving proper reference, and inadequate understanding and mastery of the conventions of academic English, this paper argues for greater awareness of cultural differences between the Chinese and Western systems of education. Not until this has been achieved can Chinese students realize their full potential at Western universities. 展开更多

The importance of cultivating students' cultural awareness is obvious in college English teaching process. This paper discusses the relationship between thought based on culture and English writing, and the characters of language transition by way of contrastive analysis. It also reveals the importance of improving English thinking ability and removing the native language interference in English writing.
