The study is meant to describe the evolution of American short-story writing with patterns where visual images have become central and not peripheral for the understanding of stories. Hemingway＇s use of objective correlatives was a trace mark, and the literary editors at The New Yorker urged their writers to slow down the emphasis on movement and plot in order to recreate a certain mood which would favour the perception of objects, anecdotes, and details. The impressionistic device works very much in the same way that an advertisement would do. It is meant to persuade the audience. The apparently non-commitant vision of reality shows in fact the author＇s point of view. The apparent simplicity is meant for a very wide audience and its deepest meaning suggests the scope of the particular visual aids working at the deepest level of consciousness

Female Subjectivity of Jo in Little Women

In the middle of 19th century, women were seen and saw themselves as defined by ties of kinship: daughter, wife and mother. Louisa May Alcott decided to pick her way to be a writer and broke the fetters on women. In 1862, she wrote Little Women according to her childhood memory. In Little women, Alcott expressed her feminist ideas. Female Subjectivity is the concrete expression of feminist ideas, and has three stages of unconsciousness, consciousness and self-improvement. In this thesis, it analyses Jo by Female Subjectivity to reveal the ideal image. And the ideal image will provide a model with the modern people, especially with girls and women. Female Ethical Images in The Thorn Birds

The Ultimate Female Auteur： Visuality, Subjectivity, and History in the Works of Peng Xiaolian

Peng Xiaolian is a rare and prolific Chinese author who writes both fiction and non-fiction works and directs both dramatic and documentary films. Peng has not only written, cowritten, or rewritten all the screenplays of her eight dramatic features and two documentaries but is also the author of one novel, twelve novellas, over a dozen short stories, four book-length memoirs, three collections of film reviews, and numerous essays. The existing scholarly studies, however, nearly all focus on Peng＇s dramatic films, with much less, if any, attention directed at her writing and documentaries. To really understand Peng as a film auteur, however, it is necessary to look at her films and writings together. Given the quantity and complexity of her works and the space limitations of this article, I examine Peng＇s subversion of the conventional treatment of character, location, and time in three thematic sections reflecting the key narrative motifs in her work. I first summarize existing studies of Peng＇s films, highlighting the rarely examined interaction between visuality and spatiality in her films. Then, after defining her sense of time in narrative, I demonstrate how family history and self-reflexivity are the major difference between her films and her nonfiction works. Last but not least, I discuss how, through her use of multilayered narratives constructed by the female voice and subjectivity, her complete repertoire constitutes a unique history of modern Chinese women. On Subversion of Traditional Male and Female Images in Angela Cater's Modern Fairy Tales

Angela Carter is a famous contemporary British female writer with a variety of creative styles, famous for Gothic style, magic realism and new feminism. As one of the representatives of feminist writers in the last century, Angela Carter devoted her life to prosecuting patriarchal society from the perspective of women, calling on women to find themselves and realize personality libera-tion. At the same time, she is also a rational feminist, advocating the establishment of harmonious rather than antagonistic social re-lations with men and women.This article will mainly use text analysis and contrast and comparison to study the image of the male and female image in Angela Carter's modern fairy tale, and explore the reasons. On the basis of the text analysis, this paper will study the transformation of female image from the change of female status and personality. The laws of comparison and comparison will be used to explore the differences between men and women in the traditional fairy tale and the modern fairy tale of Angela Cart-er. The study found that in Carter's reconstruction of the fairy tale, the female image dares to break through the inherent status, and constantly launches the impact on the men's rights, seeking individual independence and self-liberation, and the male image is more diversified and more realistic and vivid. Through this study, it is hoped that the reader will have a deeper and more compre-hensive understanding of Angela Carter and his work, and find out the new feminist connotation contained in his work, thus ending the dualistic confrontation of the male and female and establishing a harmonious relationship.

Homegoing is the debut novel of Yaa Gyasi published in 2016.Telling stories of an Asante woman’s seven generations,Homegoing embodies different kinds of female images.By analyzing three types of female images in the novel,this thesis aims to reveal the fact that women are under oppression from social factors,as well as to point out the importance of claiming women’s agency,resisting others’attempts to put limitations on them.

Imaging presentation of adrenal glands in female pseudohermaphroditism

Objective: To discuss imaging features of the adrenal glands in female pseudo-hermaphroditism. Methods: 11 cases of female pseudohermaphroditism (8-27 years old) were analyzed retrospectively. Results: In 9 of the 11 patients with female pseudohermaphroditism who did no receive hormone replacement therapy, both internal and external branches of bilateral adrenal glands were found to be thickened, prolonged and twisted, and in 2 of the 9 patients they were found to be macronodularly hyperplasic. In one of the remaining two patients who had received long-term hormone replacement therapy, the adrenal glands were not thickened or twisted, though prolonged; and in the other patient imaging presentation of the adrenal glands was the same as that of those who did not receive hormone replacement therapy, but with co-existence of adrenal myelolipoma. Among the 11 patients agenesis of the uterus and the vagina was found in 4 cases. Conclusion: Female pseudohermaphroditism is a hereditary disease, where hyperplasia of the adrenal glands and agenesis of the uterus and the vagina were secondary. Early detection of these abnormalities by imageology would prove to be helpful in early detection and treatment of the condition.

We’ll explore the key role of clothing in revealing the story of heroine Elizabeth with multiple perspectives, such as dress design, collocation style and appearance mode in 1995 TV series Pride and Prejudice.

Perceptual Quality Assessment of Omnidirectional Images:Subjective Experiment and Objective Model Evaluation

Virtual reality(VR) environment can provide immersive experience to viewers.Under the VR environment, providing a good quality of experience is extremely important.Therefore, in this paper, we present an image quality assessment(IQA) study on omnidirectional images. We first build an omnidirectional IQA(OIQA) database, including 16 source images with their corresponding 320 distorted images. We add four commonly encountered distortions. These distortions are JPEG compression, JPEG2000 compression, Gaussian blur, and Gaussian noise. Then we conduct a subjective quality evaluation study in the VR environment based on the OIQA database. Considering that visual attention is more important in VR environment, head and eye movement data are also tracked and collected during the quality rating experiments. The 16 raw and their corresponding distorted images,subjective quality assessment scores, and the head-orientation data and eye-gaze data together constitute the OIQA database. Based on the OIQA database, we test some state-of-the-art full-reference IQA(FR-IQA) measures on equirectangular format or cubic formatomnidirectional images. The results show that applying FR-IQA metrics on cubic format omnidirectional images could improve their performance. The performance of some FR-IQA metrics combining the saliency weight of three different types are also tested based on our database. Some new phenomena different from traditional IQA are observed.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Measured Adductor Muscle Volume and 100 m Sprint Running Performance in Female Sprinters

The purpose of this study was to determine the specific muscles that may contribute to sprint performance. Eleven female 100-m sprinters and nine non-sprinters volunteered. Thigh muscle volume (MV) was measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images obtained from the spina iliaca anterior-superior to below the distal end of the femur. The MV of the adductors, quadriceps and hamstrings was calculated. Evidence for the null/alternative hypothesis was provided thorough the calculation of Bayes Factors (BF10). Differences represented as median δ(95% credible interval). Absolute MVs in the quadriceps [1.287 (0.315, 2.39), BF10: 14.3], hamstrings [3.032 (1.886, 4.482), BF10: 9487.4] and adductors [3.22 (1.994, 4.654), BF10: 23,360.2] were greater in sprinters than in non-sprinters. This was also observed when MV was normalized to body mass (cm3/kg). Absolute and relative MVs in the adductor longus, the adductor brevis, the adductor magnus, pectineus, and gracilis were also greater in the sprinters. However, percentage of component adductor relative to total adductors MV appeared similar between the two groups. There was no evidence for a correlation between sprint time and quadriceps, hamstrings and adductors MV relative to body mass. Within the adductors, there was evidence for a correlation between sprint time and adductor brevis MV relative to body mass [r = −0.652, BF10: 3.028, δ−0.548 (−0.870, 0.040)]. Although the credible interval was wide, our results suggest that the adductor brevis may contribute to sprint running performance in female sprinters. This may be related, in part, to supporting the flexion and medial rotation of the thigh.

Study on Subjective Well-Being in Voluntourism of Females

Along with the rise in modem feminine consciousness, many of the females would choose to leave out of their regular lives. They no longer aim at sightseeing or shopping in travel. Voluntourism has gradually become their priority to improve themselves, broaden their horizons, strength their wills, and get rid of inherent living circles The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate the difference in female volunteer travelers in Taiwan. For this purpose, the study first starts from analyzing female background features, then their discrepancy in lifestyles, and based on the data collected, the authors also look into the difference of female involvement. Finally, the authors analyze the difference of their subjective well-being with the study result above. The study has collected a total of 98 valid samples focusing on females in Taiwan who had attended voluntourism through the Intemet platform questionnaires. The study shows that female volunteer travelers are independent in lifestyles and prefer to interact with local people and other travelers. They are fond of arranging organized and flexible trips and they also have a strong interest in fashion trend and trendy events. The research shows that despite many of the female volunteer travelers are beginners in voluntourism, they generally present stronger subjective well-being. The result of the study is available for related departments to arrange and spread mid-term and long-term voluntourism for qualified and willing female volunteers with senior or experienced qualities. In the future literary planning, voluntourism can add on seeking happiness for more females who intend to realize their self-worth and pursue life meanings to understand the importance and meaning of voluntourism and enjoy in it.

Biomechanical Mapping of the Female Pelvic Floor: Prolapse versus Normal Conditions

Background: Quantitative biomechanical characterization of pelvic supportive structures and functions in vivo is thought to provide insight into pathophysiology of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). An innovative approach—vaginal tactile imaging—allows biomechanical mapping of the female pelvic floor to quantify tissue elasticity, pelvic support, and pelvic muscle functions. The Vaginal Tactile Imager (VTI) records high definition pressure patterns from vaginal walls under an applied tissue deformation and during pelvic floor muscle contractions. Objective: To explore an extended set of 52 biomechanical parameters for differentiation and characterization of POP relative to normal pelvic floor conditions. Methods: 96 subjects with normal and POP conditions were included in the data analysis from multi-site observational, case-controlled studies;42 subjects had normal pelvic floor conditions and 54 subjects had POP. The VTI, model 2S, was used with an analytical software package to calculate automatically 52 biomechanical parameters for 8 VTI test procedures (probe insertion, elevation, rotation, Valsalva maneuver, voluntary muscle contractions in 2 planes, relaxation, and reflex contraction). The groups were equalized for subject age and parity. Results: The ranges, mean values, and standard deviations for all 52 VTI parameters were established. 33 of 52 parameters were identified as statistically sensitive (p 0.05;t-test) to the POP development. Among these 33 parameters, 11 parameters show changes (decrease) in tissue elasticity, 8 parameters show deteriorations in pelvic support and 14 parameters show weakness in muscle functions for POP versus normal conditions. Conclusions: The biomechanical mapping of the female pelvic floor with the VTI provides a unique set of parameters characterizing POP versus normal conditions. These objectively measurable biomechanical transformations of pelvic tissues, support structures, and functions under POP may be used in future research and practical applications.

Brain activation patterns associated with sexual orientation in homosexual male and female: a case study with 3.0T fMRI

This study was performed to clarify the sexual orien-tation in a 19-year-old homosexual male and a 20-year-old homosexual female by using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with viewing male and female erotic nude pictures. The sex hor-mone levels of the homosexual male and female were in the normal range of healthy heterosexual males and females, respectively. In both homosexuals more significant brain activities were observed while view-ing the nude pictures of the same genetic sex than those of the opposite sex in the frontal cortex, parietal cortex, occipital cortex, anterior cingulate gyrus, amygdala, midbrain, hippocampus, orbitofrontal cortex, parahippocampal gyrus, thalamus, globus pallidus, and putamen, which are known to be re-sponsive to sexual arousal. The homosexual male and female showed a tendency toward higher sexual arousal to the same genetic sex as comparison with the opposite sex. This finding may be useful to un-derstand the different neural mechanisms on sexual arousal in homosexuals.
