It is written as a physical note on paper. It is the result of harmony and composition of music that expresses the meaning of music created from the author’s mind, thinking, skills, and feelings, or composition or work. If a composition is not interpreted by a musician and set to music, it is nothing more than a notation and notation written down on paper. The main process of conveying the composition to the listeners through the musician’s interpretation of the music is somewhat overlooked. Therefore, in this research, the musician’s thinking and editing method, and how to express it through interpretation, were the doctoral dissertation and articles of researchers such as have been studied in comparison. 展开更多

The paper compares and contrasts how Chinese ESL students and American students work on a same descriptive English writing assignment that requires critical thinking. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the similarity and difference between English composition teaching in China and English composition teaching in America in regarding to incorporating critical thinking, as reflected in the use of this assignment. The study uses descriptive analysis of student writings as well as quantitative analysis of questionnaires, student grades given both from the author and several other researchers who are invited to participate in the study. The cognitive abilities in critical thinking basically consist of logical thinking, dialectical thinking, and creative thinking abilities. The study reveals that Chinese students' works generally flow well and they use a language that is coherent and clear. However, the study also reveals that Chinese students have difficulties in implementing critical thinking at English composition learning, and the difficulties lie in creative and dialectical thinking. To cultivate critical thinking, we need to employ affective strategies, meta-cognitive strategies-macro-abilities, and cognitive strategies-micro-abilities. The paper concludes by giving concrete examples in the area of cognitive strategies-micro-abilities in order to cultivate critical thinking. 展开更多

Experienced College Instructors' Personal Epistemology in Teaching Social Studies and Their Perception of Using Technology

Experience includes explicit and tacit knowledge. Explicit knowledge is from a person's "espoused theory" which is what a person believes and claims to follow. Tacit knowledge is from a person's "theory-in-use" ... Experience includes explicit and tacit knowledge. Explicit knowledge is from a person's "espoused theory" which is what a person believes and claims to follow. Tacit knowledge is from a person's "theory-in-use" which lies behind a person's action or behavior. The knowledge of teaching demonstrated in the classroom can be referred to as tacit knowledge or theory-in-use which is often the theory behind the practice of experienced teachers. Freema Elbaz (1983) points out that the "experience" is referred to as "practical knowledge", which "provides the basis for a conceptualization which sees the teacher as possessing valuable resources" (6) and allows teachers to explicitly indicate and tacitly demonstrate their experience in teaching. The purpose of the study is to investigate how experienced college instructors apply their good teaching qualities to teaching social studies. The participants are three experienced college instructors teaching social studies. A concept map and a final reflection are used to elicit experienced instructors' personal epistemology in teaching social studies and their perception of technology use in the classroom. Each participant was asked to generate nine good teaching qualities and draw their concept map based on the nine qualities. Their concept maps reflected their theory-in-use and showed the relationship among their teaching qualities by displaying them together in a graphic form and how each teaching quality is connected to another. Participants' technology use was also explored to get their perception of the role of technology and their actual use of it in teaching. Then they were asked to validate their concept map data and reflect on their classroom teaching and use of technology. The findings show the three instructors taught under different schema and decided what their means and ends should be and how technology can help facilitate teaching and learning. However, most of them seemed to treat the content (e.g., democracy education) as their ends and thus used pedagogy (e.g., technology) as the means to reach the ends. Their technology use also reflected their perception of technology in teaching and revealed their limited understanding of technology integration, which leads to potential problems. 展开更多

The aim of this study is to assess creativity of the students from a project of first year undergrad students of King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi,a residential college(KMUTT-RC).A project is a part of academic contents from Physics and Chemistry subjects.There were instructors from Chemistry,Physics,Engineering,and Social Sciences Department for consulting and engineering students for building a prototype.Formative assessment activity is explored from question,answer,and presentation.The characters,assessed on creativity,associated with an analysis on the rubric of prototype design,knowledge,and selective materials.Most students understood the perspective on creativity correlating with the observation from instructors.The instructor’s view represented that most of creative scores gained from motivate design and materials selection while their knowledge was not adequate.The accuracy of prototypes from the students did not relate to creativity in terms of design but error of measurement could occur from confusing with refractive index scale and from preparing a standard solution in chemical laboratory. 展开更多
