Culture teaching is an inseparable part of International Chinese Language Education,and it has great significance in international Chinese language teaching.Students can enhance their interest in Chinese language learning and improve their learning effect through understanding the excellent traditional Chinese culture,at the same time,culture teaching can help to disseminate the Chinese culture and promote the development of a multicultural world.Taking the teaching of Chinese New Year culture as an example,we analyze the current teaching materials involving Chinese New Year culture with high popularity and acceptance,put forward effective teaching methods matching the feasibility of teaching Chinese New Year culture,and then present the specific teaching design of Chinese New Year culture,in order to provide references for the teaching of culture in International Chinese Language Education. 展开更多

Drawing upon relevant papers from Chinese core journals and CSSCI source journals in the CNKI China Academic Journals Full-Text Database spanning from 1992 to 2023,this study utilizes CiteSpace as a research tool to visually analyze the knowledge graph structure of research on international Chinese language textbooks in China.The study maps out the publication timeline,authors,institutions,collaborative networks,and keywords pertaining to research on international Chinese language textbooks.The findings indicate that research on international Chinese language textbooks commenced early and continues to maintain a certain level of research interest,yet lacks sufficient research output.Research institutions predominantly reside in universities and publishing groups specializing in language or education,with collaboration between institutions being relatively scarce.High-frequency keywords in recent research on international Chinese language textbooks include“Chinese language textbooks for the Foreigners,”“Chinese language textbooks,”“Teaching Chinese Language for the Foreigners,”“Textbook compilation,”“International Chinese Language Education and Localization,”which reflect a diversified research perspective with interdisciplinary trends.Future research priorities encompass research on localization,customization of textbooks,and evaluation of textbooks which represent forefront directions of research. 展开更多

One major task of our improvement of China’s international communication capabilities is to tell China’s stories well and make China’s voice heard to communicate a comprehensive,multi-dimensional view of China in the international arena.International Chinese language education bears the dual responsibility of spreading the Chinese language and promoting the Chinese culture.How to shape global narratives for telling China’s stories and improve China’s international communication capabilities has become an important issue that concerns international Chinese language education.Chinese idioms,which are hidden treasures of the Chinese language,can play a unique role in this regard.It is therefore necessary to review the content and methods of including idioms in international Chinese language education.In this paper,instruction in idioms is approached by making a corpus-based comparative analysis from the theoretical perspectives of equivalence,cognitive metaphor,and second language acquisition.Qualitative and quantitative methods are combined to analyze idioms to be added to the vocabulary of international Chinese language education in three dimensions:word frequency,semantic transparency,and functional equivalence.This paper aims to explore a new approach to the dissemination of Chinese culture through instruction in idioms in international Chinese language education. 展开更多

According to the phenomenon-taking of classified analog,directional solidification can be an excellent approach for international communication of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)in the context of COVID‑19 pandemic.Attitudes toward TCM by Western Medicine(WM)can be represented by various morphologies of the solid/liquid interface.COVID‑19 has created an urgent need for the worldwide spread of TCM.To counter any doubts and objections against TCM,COVID‑19 pandemic provides a good opportunity,meanwhile a steady and firm pace forward should be kept.It is also necessary to resolve domestic controversies and to lower cultural shock.The philosophy of TCM can agree fairly well with dialectical materialism;the scientific connotation of pentacy in TCM can be explained through the symptoms of COVID‑19‑infected patients.A TCM understanding compatible with WM will accelerate its international acceptance,which could help to better elaborate the significance of humanity in TCM.Holistic medicine under the guidance of TCM principles is an important trend in medical development,whose framework is illustrated in a 4C+T diagram. 展开更多

Teachers’stereotypes of students affect teaching behaviour.Correctly perceiving stereotypes of international students helps teachers to understand the student population more deeply and adopt effective teaching behaviour.This study focuses on the stereotypes of international Chinese language teachers towards international students in Chinese universities and its impact on teachers’classroom management and students’classroom performance.Summarizing the findings,we conclude that international Chinese language teachers have both positive and negative stereotypes of the international student body,and that negative stereotypes account for more than positive stereotypes.On this basis,this study further discusses the importance of international Chinese language teachers being aware of the existence of stereotypes of international students,and makes suggestions to strengthen the positive influences and weaken the negative ones. 展开更多

This study investigated the Chinese learning motivation,learning goals and learning strategies of 26 international students majoring in MBA and MPA at a university with The belt and road college,mainly by questionnaire and interview method,supplemented by classroom observation method.The survey found that 20 of the 24 international students were zero-start Chinese learners,and their learning motivation was mainly"instrumental"and"intrinsic",and they had high enthusiasm for Chinese language and Chinese culture.They have a high enthusiasm for Chinese language and culture,and will actively solve the difficulties they encounter in learning Chinese.At the same time,this study conducted a questionnaire survey on the needs of international students in terms of curriculum and content,teaching materials,teaching assessment and extracurricular activities,combined with the results of individual and group interviews and classroom observations,to summarize the real needs of international students in various aspects of Chinese language learning,so as to provide teaching reference for teachers teaching international students,and to provide a reference for colleges and universities to develop Chinese teaching programs.The survey will provide a basis for the colleges and universities to formulate Chinese teaching programs and coordinate teaching activities,so as to help international students learn Chinese better. 展开更多

This qualitative study aims at exploring the influence of L2 learners' willingness to communicate(WTC) on second language communication. The participants involved in this study were 7 beginners learning Mandarin in a Chinese university whose native languages were totally different. Multiple sources of data were collected, including classroom observations, semistructured interviews and stimulated recalls. The results indicate that the students with higher level of WTC were more fluent in L2 Chinese communication, and the student whose native language or second language is Russian performed better in Chinese communication. 展开更多

Given the resilience of Confucianism,Chinese students continue to be influenced by their cultural belief systems,which have an effect on their English-second-language(ESL)learning experience in an English-speaking country.This is especially apparent since Chinese students experience the greatest cultural demands in countries with opposing customs and values.The most powerful tenets of Chinese culture are maintaining harmony,collectivity,and hierarchical relationships.These aspects of Chinese culture influence the communication style of the Chinese and their educational system.This article examines five main characteristics of Chinese communication:implicit communication,listening-centeredness,politeness,focus on insiders,and face-saving strategies.The Chinese emphasis on education and academic achievement is discussed in terms of parental influence,environment,effort versus ability,and pedagogy within the Chinese cultural context.Educational implications for Chinese ESL students studying in Canada are also addressed. 展开更多

The purpose of this paper is to study effect factors of adaptation to university life of Chinese International Students in Korea. 374 Korean language trainees are chosen as investigation objects by means of random cluster sampling. Questionnaire data are collected by using the survey form and then paths of effect factors on adaption to university life of Korean training Chinese students in Korea are analyzed. The results indicate that Korean language proficiency, physical symptoms, loneliness, self-efficacy, acculturation stress are direct effect factors on Chinese students adapting to university life in Korea. Besides, Korean language proficiency, physical symptoms, loneliness are not only direct effect factors on self-efficacy and acculturation stress but also indirect effect factors on Chinese students adapting to university life in Korea. In order to improve ability of Korean training Chinese students adapting to university life in Korea, Korean language proficiency and self-efficacy should be improved. And, some effective interventions should be given to reducing physical symptoms, loneliness and acculturation stress. 展开更多

This article reports the concurrent predictive validity of a new Intercultural Business Communication Competence Scale(IBCCS)involving three dimensions:cognitive ability about intercultural business communication situation(CB),business English linguistic proficiency(LP),and intercultural business communication motivation(CM).Survey data were collected with 120 Chinese international business practitioners.It was found that the subjects’intercultural business communication competence(IBCC)appeared to predict the three dimensions of job performance(JP):task performance(TP),interpersonal facilitation(IF),and job dedication(JD).In the three facets of IBCC,CM emerged as significant predictor of the three dimensions of JP.The present study provides more validity evidence for the IBCCS and extends the existing research on the relationship between communication competence and JP to intercultural business context. 展开更多

Cross-cultural communication has become an essential course for international students.As foreign students have different cultural backgrounds and languages,pragmatic failures are inevitable for them when communicating in Chinese,thus resulting in unpleasant communication.In order to effectively reduce pragmatic failures,it is necessary to analyze the problems that arise in the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and determine the causes.This research is separated into three aspects.Firstly,with the support of the theory of pragmatics and by analyzing the life and learning of foreign students,it can be appreciated that the pragmatic failures of foreign students in using Chinese for communication are very much detailed in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language[1].Secondly,after arranging and analyzing these corpora,the reasons for the pragmatic failures of foreign students are determined.Finally,aiming at the causes of pragmatic failures,corresponding countermeasures and teaching suggestions are proposed.The conclusion drawn from this research is that pragmatic failures occur due to various factors,some of which are essential factors that cannot be changed.This requires effort from both Chinese language teachers and students in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language to lessen the occurrence of pragmatic failures. 展开更多
