History of Western Philosophy and Quantum Language (Including Quantum Mechanics, Statistics, Fuzzy Logic, etc.)

Although there are many different types of philosophy, many philosophers agree that the mainstream of Western philosophy (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Wittgenstein) developed toward the perfection of Socrates’ absolutism. But can the absolutism maintain its central position after analytic philosophy? There are pessimistic views on this problem, such as that of R. Rorty, the standard-bearer of neo-pragmatism. Recently, I proposed quantum language (which is including quantum mechanics, statistics, fuzzy sets, etc.). I think that that this theory is not only one of the most fundamental scientific theories, but also the scientific final destination of Western philosophy. If so, Socrates’ dream has come true. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the above and to inform readers that quantum language has the power to create a paradigm shift from the classical mechanical world view to the quantum mechanical worldview.

Quantum Mechanics and the Philosophy of Language:Reconsideration of Traditional Philosophies

Recently we proposed “a new interpretation of quantum mechanics (called quantum and classical measurement theory)” in this journal (JQIS: Vol. 1, No. 2), which was characterized as the metaphysical and linguistic turn of quantum mechanics. This turn from physics to language does not only realize the remarkable extension of quantum mechanics but also yield the quantum mechanical world view (i.e., the philosophy of quantum mechanics). And thus, the turn urges us to dream that traditional philosophies (i.e., Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, John Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Kant, Saussure, Wittgenstein, etc.) can be understood in the quantum mechanical world view. This dream will be challenged in this paper. We, of course, know that most scientists are skeptical to philosophy. Still, we can expect that readers find a good linguistic philosophy (i.e. philosophy of language) in quantum mechanics.

Visual analytics tool for the interpretation of hidden states in recurrent neural networks

In this paper,we introduce a visual analytics approach aimed at helping machine learning experts analyze the hidden states of layers in recurrent neural networks.Our technique allows the user to interactively inspect how hidden states store and process information throughout the feeding of an input sequence into the network.The technique can help answer questions,such as which parts of the input data have a higher impact on the prediction and how the model correlates each hidden state configuration with a certain output.Our visual analytics approach comprises several components:First,our input visualization shows the input sequence and how it relates to the output(using color coding).In addition,hidden states are visualized through a nonlinear projection into a 2-D visualization space using t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding to understand the shape of the space of the hidden states.Trajectories are also employed to show the details of the evolution of the hidden state configurations.Finally,a time-multi-class heatmap matrix visualizes the evolution of the expected predictions for multi-class classifiers,and a histogram indicates the distances between the hidden states within the original space.The different visualizations are shown simultaneously in multiple views and support brushing-and-linking to facilitate the analysis of the classifications and debugging for misclassified input sequences.To demonstrate the capability of our approach,we discuss two typical use cases for long short-term memory models applied to two widely used natural language processing datasets.

The Correlation Between Note Features and Consecutive Interpreting Quality for English Majors

Note-taking skill is a necessary component in interpreter training programs,and previous research has yielded findings such as note-taking training methods or features of interpreter trainees’notes.However,little research has been done to investigate the changes in note features and correlations between note features and interpreting quality concerning Chinese students’C-E(Chinese-English)and E-C(EnglishChinese)interpreting.Using the framework of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model and Interpretive Theory of Translation,this paper examined how 45 English Majors’notes develop within one semester(seventeen weeks)and the relationship between note features(quantity,form,and language choice of notes)and consecutive interpreting quality.The participants of this study were all beginner interpreting trainees,and the note-taking training was introduced in Week 6.The study employed note manuscripts,interpreting tests,and semi-structured interviews to track the features and changes in students’notes.Correlation analyses and T-tests showed that(a)after the note-taking training,the number of notes increased from Week 8 to Week 17,and it was positively correlated with interpreting quality(fidelity and delivery)for both C-E and E-C interpreting;(b)as for forms of notes,participants primarily employ single Chinese words and the percentages of abbreviations and symbols rose prominently from Week 8 to Week 17 for C-E interpreting.Besides,correlation analyses show that interpreting quality improves with fewer single Chinese words and more abbreviations and symbols.For E-C interpreting,notes were mainly in English,especially single English words and abbreviations.The percentages of single Chinese words and abbreviations ascended whereas those of single English words and symbols decreased.Furthermore,results show that the more abbreviations and symbols,the better target-text fidelity,and fewer abbreviations,the better the targettext delivery;(c)concerning language choice,notes were mainly in source language for both C-E and E-C interpreting and the percentage of target language notes went up significantly for C-E interpreting.Consequently,the percentage of target language notes was positively correlated with interpreting quality.Interviews indicate that most participants do not pay much attention to language selection in the first stage,and if the source text a familiar topic with little difficult vocabulary,he or she records the target language.Otherwise,it was safer to use the source language.

The Myth of the Omniscient Translator and the Perfect Translation

Translation is a complex and misleading field of knowledge. Many people consider that some translators are incredibly skillful and that "perfect" translation truly exists. While this fantasy is so appealing, we must know that such things as perfect translation and omni- scient translators do not exist, and the reasons are often too subtle for people to realize. Even though the prospect of translation seems to be a little bit frustrating, it is not a hopeless field where we can still make progress. In this essay, I will first introduce what are "omniscient translator" and "perfect translation", and then I will analyze why they do not exist in real world, and why many people take these two fantasies for granted. At last, I will tell that what we can do to get improvement in translation.

A Final Solution to the Mind-Body Problem by Quantum Language

Recently we proposed “quantum language”, which was not only characterized as the metaphysical and linguistic turn of quantum mechanics but also the linguistic turn of Descartes = Kant epistemology. And further we believe that quantum language is the only scientifically successful theory in dualistic idealism. If this turn is regarded as progress in the history of western philosophy (i.e., if “philosophical progress” is defined by “approaching to quantum language”), we should study the linguistic mind-body problem more than the epistemological mind-body problem. In this paper, we show that to solve the mind-body problem and to propose “measurement axiom” in quantum language are equivalent. Since our approach is always within dualistic idealism, we believe that our linguistic answer is the only true solution to the mind-body problem.

Measuring the model risk-adjusted performance of machine learning algorithms in credit default prediction

Implementing new machine learning(ML)algorithms for credit default prediction is associated with better predictive performance;however,it also generates new model risks,particularly concerning the supervisory validation process.Recent industry surveys often mention that uncertainty about how supervisors might assess these risks could be a barrier to innovation.In this study,we propose a new framework to quantify model risk-adjustments to compare the performance of several ML methods.To address this challenge,we first harness the internal ratings-based approach to identify up to 13 risk components that we classify into 3 main categories—statistics,technology,and market conduct.Second,to evaluate the importance of each risk category,we collect a series of regulatory documents related to three potential use cases—regulatory capital,credit scoring,or provisioning—and we compute the weight of each category according to the intensity of their mentions,using natural language processing and a risk terminology based on expert knowledge.Finally,we test our framework using popular ML models in credit risk,and a publicly available database,to quantify some proxies of a subset of risk factors that we deem representative.We measure the statistical risk according to the number of hyperparameters and the stability of the predictions.The technological risk is assessed through the transparency of the algorithm and the latency of the ML training method,while the market conduct risk is quantified by the time it takes to run a post hoc technique(SHapley Additive exPlanations)to interpret the output.

Nowadays, it addresses the peculiarities of peoples through their culture in order to produce increasingly easy-to-use software for end users: This is the aim of software localization. Localizing a software consists among other things, in adapting its GUI according to the end user culture. We propose in this paper a generic approach allowing accomplishing this adaptation, even for multi-user applications like gaming applications, collaborative editors, etc. Techniques of functional interpretations of abstracts structures parameterized by algebras, constitute the formal base of our approach.

Testative Discussion on how to be an Eligible Interpreter--Based on the People’s Republic of China of the National People’s Congress and Committee of the People’s Political Consultative Conference from 2012 to 2014

In recent years,with the rapid development of the Chinese economy,the“two sessions”in March of every year which sponsored by the ministry of foreign affairs attract more and more journalists from all over the world.The press conference in the“two sessions”likes an important window to show China’s policies and claims to the world.Meanwhile,the premier who answers questions in the press conference,respectively,shows the world the eloquence and polite manners of China’s premier,such as Premier Wen Jiabao and Premier Li Keqiang.Their astute response,excellent,and emotional expression makes a deep impression on audiences.Moreover,as a bridge between the speaker and the listeners,the interpretation once is incorrect will cause some mistakes even conflicts.Therefore,the interpreter plays a most important role in the press conference.How to improve the interpretation level in the press conference is a significant topic.The thesis mainly introduces the content of press conference interpreting from 2012 to 2014.At present,the practical study of press conference interpretation is far from enough.The last part gives the summary of the study and points out the main findings for the further study.

Application of Post-Listening Summary Based on Oral Interpretation Contest Corpus in Language Assessment

A summary of oral interpretation can best reflect a person’s instant memory and adaptability.In various places where oral interpreters are needed,the requirements for interpreters are very high.Oral interpretation plays an important role in foreign communications.As international communications deepens and becomes more frequent,people are becoming enthusiastic about the research on oral interpretation.Whether in the West or in China,the research on oral interpretation and related content has never stopped since the seventies of the last century,and it has since been progressing and developing continuously.Based on this,this paper is divided into three parts to elaborate.Firstly,it explains the definition of oral interpretation,secondly the importance of oral interpretation quality assessment is explained,and finally the process and analysis of the establishment of a language assessment index system based on oral interpretation are explained.It is hoped that this paper will serve as a useful reference for relevant personnel.

An Experiment Report on the Linguistic Readiness of Simultaneous Interpreting Trainees

Linguistic readiness,which refers to language efficiency required for simultaneous interpretation,is different from that in daily communication.This experiment aims at observing the linguistic readiness of simultaneous interpreting trainees,targeting eight post-graduate students majoring in interpretation.After a mock simultaneous interpreting task,the performance of the trainees will be assessed by themselves and three native speakers as well.Through the comparison of the assessment made by the trainees and the native speakers,the author aims at exploring the gap between the number of information points that the trainees think they have delivered and the number that native speakers obtain from the trainees’production,and classifying those information points that could not be understood by native speakers into different types.A conclusion is reached that their linguistic readiness needs to be improved.Therefore,it is necessary to pay more attention to linguistic readiness in interpreting training.
