In order to exert its function to gain different social ends, the presentation of news language owns distinguishing features. This paper makes a comparative study of the value orientations of foreign language education poli-cies in Chinese Mainland and the United States in the 21 st century and finds that both China and the United States have regardedtheir national interests as the essential value orientation of their foreign language education policies. To be specific,the core valueorientation of foreign language education policies in China is to enhance its cultural soft power.In contrast,the core value orienta-tion of foreign language education policies in the United States is to safeguard its national security. Through the comparison of thedifferent value orientations of foreign language education policies of the two countries, the paper provides some reference for the for-eign language education policy-making in Chinese Mainland. 展开更多

The Influence of Combining Computer-Assisted Language Learning With Instruction on Chinese College Students’L2 Pragmatic Ability

In the area of computer-assisted language learning(CALL),although a number of studies have adopted various CALL-based devices(e.g.,blogs,gaming,and synthetic environments)to foster second language(L2)acquisition,the vital component of instruction has received little attention.The present study explored the usefulness of CALL-based communication in conjunction with instruction on EFL learners’L2 pragmatic development.Sixty-two EFL students from a university in China were recruited for the current research.The experimental group communicated with a native English speaker through synchronous messaging via Skype and had two instructional sessions pertinent to compliment responses,while the control group interacted with a native English speaker via Skype without having the teaching intervention.Findings from an independent samples t-test demonstrated that the experimental group produced significantly more proper compliment responses in the immediate posttest than the control group(p<.001).Moreover,a significant difference(p<.001)was found for the experimental group between the preintervention and delayed post-intervention mean scores,suggesting that CALL coupled with teaching intervention had a long-term impact on learners’L2 pragmatic development.These findings enrich our understanding of the beneficial and lasting influence of combining CALL with instruction on EFL students’pragmatic development.In addition,pedagogical implications for deploying CALL paired with L2 pragmatics instruction are provided. 展开更多

As second language learning becomes popular,various strategies to improve the learning process have been suggested.One of them includes the implantation of audiovisual materials(video authentic materials),which then leads to a discussion of subtitle usage and the value of subtitles in second language learning.This essay focuses on searching for literature that suggests the value of subtitles,especially teletext subtitles,in improving second language learning.This was achieved by reviewing relevant research and experiments.The results suggested that even though uncertainty remained on what kind of materials fit what level of learners,in general,subtitles,especially teletext subtitles,were seen as a beneficial tool in developing learners' listening abilities and skills. 展开更多

Pragmatic identity is integrated in various fields, but there is little connection withsociology. Language landscape is an important branch of sociolinguistic research. Based on pragmatic identitytheory, this paper intends to explore the characteristics and functions of language landscape, and investigate theconflict between pragmatic identities. The study shows that the slogans of political demonstration have thefollowing four characteristics: powerfulness, conciseness, vividness, and passion. Its function is consistent with thepurpose of the demonstration. The subjects of the study dynamically chose new pragmatic identities in thedemonstration, which conflicted with their previous pragmatic identities. 展开更多
