It is common for the protective structure to experience bulging failure due to excessive swelling pressure. To investigate the swelling pressure properties of expansive soil, the constant volume test was employed to study the influence of water content and reserved expansion deformation on the characteristics of swelling pressure in strong expansive soils, and also to explore the evolution mechanism of the swelling pressure. The findings demonstrate that the swelling pressure-time curve can be classified into swelling pressure-time softening and swelling pressure-time stability type. The swelling pressuretime curve of the specimen with low water content is the swelling pressure-time softening type, and the softening level will be weakened with increasing reserved expansion deformation. Besides, the maximum swelling pressure Psmax decreases with increasing water content and reserved expansion deformation, especially for expansion ratio η from 24% to 37%. The reserved deformation has little effect on reducing Psmax when it is beyond 7% of the expansion rate. The specimen with low water content has a more homogeneous structure due to the significant expansion-filling effect, and the fracture and reorganization of the aggregates in the specimens with low water content cause the swelling pressure-time softening behavior. In addition, the proposed swelling pressure-time curve prediction model has a good prediction on the test results. If necessary, a deformation space of about 7% expansion rate is recommended to be reserved in the engineering to reduce the swelling pressure except for keeping a stable water content.展开更多

When the soil water was relatively stable in the experimental salvers, the in-side pressure stil varied regularly with the temperature. When the inside temperature increased by 22.2 ℃, the inside pressure varied about 7.4 Kpa. Through com-pensation calculation of the inside tension, the temperature in the warming and cooling periods was compensated, which was useful to correct the tension measurement errors induced from the changing temperature. When the measuring interval was 4 hours and the temperature difference was 18.1 ℃, the tension difference of both points was only 0.278 Kpa, compared to the difference up to 6.5 Kpa before compensation.展开更多

In this paper, flume tests were performed at varying wave heightsunder both conditions of liquefied and stable seabed. The total pressures equal to soilpressures and pore water pressures were measured and analyzed at each depth. Theresults showed that the liquefied seabed had little difference from the stable seabed onthe peak pressures. However, the pressure amplitude of the liquefied soil increased byseveral to 10 times and decreased faster with increasing soil depths, compared with thestable soil. According to the experiments and further analysis, an empirical equationbetween pressure amplitude of the liquefied soil and wave parameters was put forwardunder the flume test. The results provide a valuable reference for engineeringapplications.展开更多

Soil was sampled twice yearly in wet and dry seasons. In each season soil was sampled from areas exposed to differing levels of visitors’ pressure (VP), and designated “no VP (Control)”, “High VP” and “Low VP”. The soil samples were taken from two depths. For each soil sample, moisture, organic matter and soluble-ion contents, pH, and electrical conductivity were determined. It was found that different properties were differently affected by VP, seasonal dynamics and soil depth: organic matter content, penetration depth and sodium concentration were the most sensitive to VP;Soil moisture did not respond to VP, but sharply reflected seasonal changes;Calcium and organic matter contents were significantly affected by the soil depth. The sensitivity of soil properties to VP increased from March to July, and the upper soil layer was more sensitive to seasonal dynamics and VP than the deeper layer. Some soil properties exhibited “spotty” patterns;others a “frontal” one. Organic matter content was completely controlled by VP at both depths and in both seasons, and could be used as an indicator of soil status in recreation areas. Visitors’ activities included trampling and other anthropogenic factors that enhanced the spatial changes and seasonal dynamics of soil properties. Based on these measurements the intensity of soil degradation and dynamics was evaluated and used to describe the soil status in an urban park.展开更多

The infrastructure undergoes strong settlement that can be due to several phenomena of consolidation of the soils. The latter results from the dissipation of the excess pore pressure and deformation of the solid skeleton. Terzaghi theory led to the equation modeling the dissipation of excess pore pressure. The objective of this study is to establish solutions, by analytical and numerical method, of the equation of the pore water pressure. We considered a compressible saturated soil layer, between two drainage areas and subjected to a uniform load. Separation of variables is used to obtain an analytical solution and the finite element method for the numerical solution. The results obtained by the finite element method have validated those of analytical resolution.展开更多

The experiment was set with the same waves on the liquefied seabed and unliquefled seabed respectively, and the current pipeline vertical pressure was measured with the pressure transducers installed on the two opposite directions (i.e., straight up and straight down) at the same cross-section of the pipeline. The results showed that when the seabed was unliquefied, the two pressure curves varied periodically and overlapped completely, reaching the maximum and minimum at the same time respectively, and the resultant pressure fluctuated within a limited range. However, when the seabed was liquefied, the two pressure curves varied periodically, but they did not overlap completely. They did not reach the maximum (minimum) value at the same time either, and the resultant pressure fluctuated within a wider range. The experiment showed that the submarine stood higher resultant pressure in the vertical direction when the seabed was liquefied, which may cause the frequent sinking and fioatation of the pipeline, leading to its fatigue damage.展开更多

In this paper, the focus is on the implications of the fine water mist on the negative phase and the impulse of multiple pressure reflections. The period of the negative phase was found to have increased by 40% and with higher negative peak pressure in the mist condition compared to the atmospheric condition. The activities of the multiple pressure reflections were found to have decreased considerably, both in number and in amplitude leading to lower impulses(by about 60%) for the water mist conditions.展开更多

Three experimental sites were selected according to grazing pressure gradient. In each experimental site, the total vegetation cover, A. ordosica cover, BSC cover, litter-fall cover, BSC degree of fragmentation, BSC thickness and soil properties were investigated in both fixed and semi-fixed sand dunes and simultaneously analyzed in the laboratory. The results showed that at the same grazing pressure, BSC cover and composition were significantly affected by the fixation degree of sand dunes. In addition, BSC cover in the fixed sand dunes was 83.74% on average, whereas it is proportionally dominated by 28% mosses, 21% lichens, and 51% algae. Meanwhile, BSC cover in the semi-fixed sand dunes was 23.54% on average, which is proportionally domi- nated by 6.3% mosses, 2.5% lichens, and 91.2% algae. Fine sand, organic matter, and total nitrogen (N) contents in the fixed sand dunes were all significantly higher than those in the semi-fixed sand dunes. Litter-fall cover de- creased along the grazing pressure gradient, whereas BSC fragmentation degree increased. Fine sand content decreased along with the increase of grazing pressure, whereas medium sand content increased in both fixed and semi-fixed dunes. The organic matter and total N contents in the no grazing site were significantly higher than those in light and normal grazing sites. However, there were no significant differences between the light and normal grazing sites. In addition, there were also no significant differences in BSC thickness between the light and normal grazing sites in the fixed sand dunes. However, a significant decrease was observed in both BSC cover and thick- ness in the normal grazing site. The BSC in the semi-fixed dunes was more sensitive to disturbance.展开更多

文摘Because of the cementation inherited from the parent rock, weathered granitic soil is usually susceptible to disturbance, which poses considerable challenges for laboratory characterization. The cone penetration test with pore pressure measurements has long been known for its reliability in site investigations and stratigraphic profiling. However, although extensive piezocone test results and experience are available for sedimentary soil, similar advances are yet to be made for weathered granitic soil. Moreover, the experience from sedimentary soil may not be directly applicable to weathered profiles because of the essentially different natures of the two types of geomaterials. This study performs seismic piezocone tests in a weathered granitic profile comprising residual granitic soil, completely weathered granite, and highly weathered granite.Pore pressure is measured at both the cone mid-face and the shoulder, and the effects of penetrometer size and penetration rate are considered.A series of updated soil behavior type charts is proposed to interpret the test results, thereby allowing the effect of weathering to be evaluated. This paper offers an important extension to the sparse data on the in situ responses of weathered materials.

文摘Load transformation from the yielding part of the soil to the adjacent part is known as the soil arching effect, which plays an important role in the design of various geotechnical infrastructures.Terzaghi’s trapdoor test was an importantmilestone in the development of theories on soil arching. The research on earth pressure of the trapdoor problem is presented in this paper using the three-dimensional(3D)discrete element method(DEM).Five 3D trapdoor models with different heights are established by 3DDEMsoftware PFC 3D.The variation of earth pressure on the trapdoor with the downward movement of the trapdoor, the distribution of vertical earth pressure along the horizontal direction, the distribution of vertical earth pressure along the vertical direction, the distribution of lateral earth pressure coefficient along the depth direction, the magnitude and direction of contact force chain are studied, respectively.Related research results show that the earth pressure on the trapdoor decreases rapidly after the downward movement of the trapdoor, and then reaches the minimum earth pressure. After that, the earth’s pressure will rise slightly, and whether this phenomenon occurs depends on the depth ratio. For the bottom soil, due to the stress transfer caused by the soil arching effect, the ratio of earth pressure in the loose area decreases, while the ratio of earth pressure in the stable area increases. With the trapdoor moving down, the vertical earth pressure along the depth in the stable zone is basically consistent with the initial state, which shows an approximate linear distribution. After the trapdoor moves down, the distribution of earth pressure along with the depth in the loose area changes, which is far less than the theoretical value of vertical earth pressure of its self-weight.Because of the compression of the soil on both sides, the lateral earth pressure coefficient of most areas on the central axis of the loose zone is close to the passive earth pressure coefficient Kp.The existence of a‘soil arch’can be observed intuitively from the distribution diagram of the contact force chain in the loose zone.

文摘When the electronic temperature sensor was incorporated into a system of soil water tension and the insidetube temperature was monitored in real time, it is concluded that the inside temperature increased by 26.9 ℃ and the inside pressure changed about 14.6 Kpa, when the pottery soil was replaced by the sealing plug. When the measuring interval was 4 hours and the temperature difference was 18.1 ℃, the tension difference of both points was only 0.278 Kpa, compared to the difference up to 6.5 Kpa before compensation.
文摘Due to the inherent working mode of rotating detonation engine(RDE),the detonation flow field has the characteristics of pressure oscillation and axial kinetic energy loss, which makes it difficult to design nozzle and improve propulsion performance. Therefore,in order to improve the characteristics of detonation flow field, the three-dimensional numerical simulation of annular chamber and hollow chamber is carried out with premixed hydrogen/air as fuel in this paper, and then tries to combine the two chambers to weaken the oscillation characteristics of detonation flow field through the interaction of detonation flow field, which is a new method to regulate the detonation flow field. The results show that there are four states of velocity vectors at the outlet of annular chamber and hollow chamber, which makes RDE be affected by rolling moment and results in the loss of axial kinetic energy. In the external flow field of combined chamber, the phenomenon of cyclic reflection of expansion wave and compression wave on the free boundary is observed, which results in Mach disk structure. Moreover, the pressure monitoring points are set at the external flow field. The pressure signal shows that the high-frequency pressure oscillation at the external flow field of the combined chamber has been greatly weakened.Compared to the annular chamber, the relative standard deviation(RSD) has been reduced from 14.6% to5.6%.The results thus demonstrate that this method is feasible to adjust the pressure oscillation characteristics of the detonation flow field, and is of great significance to promote the potential of RDE and nozzle design.

文摘A number of studies focus on the pore-water pressure in seabed under thewaves and seabed instability induced by liquefaction, but rarely on the wave pressureof liquefied soil. The results provide a valuable reference for engineeringapplications.
文摘A calibration test was done in order to measure its sensitivity coefficient by an improved soil test device. The experimental result shows that the soil pressure min-sensor made of the monocrystalline silicon(SPMMS)is proved to be good linear, high precision and less that can fetch precise data in low pressure range even near by O point, which guarantees the reliability of the soil pressure test in geotechnical engineering.
文摘Soil properties and their tempo-spatial heterogeneity, affected by visitors’ pressure, season and soil depth, were studied in an urban park in Tel-Aviv. Based on these measurements the intensity of soil degradation and dynamics was evaluated and used to describe the soil status in an urban park.
文摘The building of the infrastructure on the compressible and saturated soils presents sometimes major difficulties. The results obtained by the finite element method have validated those of analytical resolution.
文摘Lunar base construction is a crucial component of the lunar exploration program, and considering the dynamic characteristics of lunar soil is important for moon construction. Therefore, investigating the dynamic properties of lunar soil by establishing a constitutive relationship is critical for providing a theoretical basis for its damage evolution. In this paper,a split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)device was used to perform three sets of impact tests under different pressures on a lunar soil simulant geopolymer(LSSG)with sodium silicate(Na_(2)SiO_(3))contents of 1%,3%,5%and 7%.The dynamic stressestrain curves, failure modes, and energy variation rules of LSSG under different pressures were obtained. The equation was modified based on the ZWT viscoelastic constitutive model and was combined with the damage variable. The damage element obeys the Weibull distribution and the constitutive equation that can describe the mechanical properties of LSSG under dynamic loading was obtained. The results demonstrate that the dynamic compressive strength of LSSG has a marked strain-rate strengthening effect.Na_(2)SiO_(3) has both strengthening and deterioration effects on the dynamic compressive strength of LSSG.As Na_(2)SiO_(3) grows, the dynamic compressive strength of LSSG first increases and then decreases. At a fixed air pressure,5%Na_(2)SiO_(3) had the largest dynamic compressive strength, the largest incident energy, the smallest absorbed energy, and the lightest damage. The ZWT equation was modified according to the stress response properties of LSSG and the range of the SHPB strain rate to obtain the constitutive equation of the LSSG,and the model’s correctness was confirmed.
文摘The disposal of filtered tailings in high dry stacks can induce particle breakage, changing the material's behaviour during the structure's lifetime. The grading changes influence material properties at the critical state, and this is not mature for intermediate artificial soils(tailings)in a broad range of confining pressures. In this paper,it aims to describe the behaviour of iron ore tailings in a spectrum of confining pressures broader than the reported in previous studies.A series of consolidated drained(CD)triaxial tests was carried out with confining pressures ranging from 0.075 MPa to 120 MPa.These results show that the amount of breakage plays an essential role in the response of iron ore tailings. The existence of curved critical state line(CSL)in both specific volume(ν)-logarithm of mean effective stress(p′)and deviatoric stress(q)-mean effective stress(p′)planes, and different responses in the deviatoric stress-axial strain-volumetric strain curves were verified. An inverse S-shaped equation was proposed to represent the silty-sandy tailings'behaviour up to high pressures onν-lnp′plane.The proposed equation provides a basis for enhancing constitutive models and considers the evolution of the grading up to severe loading conditions. The adjustment considered three regions with different responses associated with particle breakage at different pressure levels.

文摘In this paper, the influence of soil liquefaction on the vertical pressure of submarine pipeline was investigated under the wave loading through the wave flume test. The experiment showed that the submarine stood higher resultant pressure in the vertical direction when the seabed was liquefied, which may cause the frequent sinking and fioatation of the pipeline, leading to its fatigue damage.
文摘The effects of a fine water mist environment in a semi-confined blast chamber on the chemical and thermodynamic processes following detonation of a 20 g PE4 explosive charge have been investigated. The effects were quantified by the analysis of pressure profiles recorded where several parameters including arrival time of the shock at the sensors, peak overpressures, specific impulse of the positive phase, period of the negative phase and the specific impulse of the multiple reflections were quantified. The effect of the fine water mist on the arrival time, peak pressures and the specific impulse of the positive phase agrees with previous findings in literature. In this paper, the focus is on the implications of the fine water mist on the negative phase and the impulse of multiple pressure reflections. The period of the negative phase was found to have increased by 40% and with higher negative peak pressure in the mist condition compared to the atmospheric condition. The activities of the multiple pressure reflections were found to have decreased considerably, both in number and in amplitude leading to lower impulses(by about 60%) for the water mist conditions.

文摘This study investigated the distribution pattern of biological soil crust (BSC) in Artemisia ordosica communities in Mu Us Sandy Land. The BSC in the semi-fixed dunes was more sensitive to disturbance.
文摘In order to explore the impact of different structural design parameters and environmental factors on the performance of the hydrostatic guide rail, the flow field inside its oil chamber is simulated, which provides direction and guidance for the design and optimization of the guide rail system.Based on the theory of fluid lubrication and the Reynolds equation, numerical simulations are performed through a mathematical model. The results suggest that the bearing capacity of the oil film increases with the oil supply pressure. The film thickness and the film stiffness share a positive correlation.Different oil film thickness and different input pressure parameters can have a significant impact on bearing capacity and oil film stiffness. The correlations identified in the present analysis can be used as a basis to optimize the guide rail design.

文摘The theoretical formulations of Coulomb and Rankine still remain as the fundamental approaches to the analysis of most gravity-type retaining wall, with the assumption that sufficient lateral yield will occur to mobilize fully limited conditions behind the wall. The effects of the magnitude of wall movements and different wall-movement modes are not taken into consideration. The disturbance of backfill is considered to be related to the wall movement under translation mode.On the basis of disturbed state concept(DSC),a general disturbance function was proposed which ranged from-1 to 1.The disturbance variables could be determined from the measured wall movements.A novel approach that related to disturbed degree and the mobilized internal frictional angle of the backfill was also derived.A calculation method benefited from Rankine's theory and the proposed approach was established to predict the magnitude and distribution of earth pressure from the cohesionless backfill under translation mode. The predicted results, including the magnitude and distribution of earth pressure, show good agreement with those of the model test and the finite element method. In addition, the disturbance parameter b was also discussed.
