The Politeness Principle overcomes the shortcoming of the Cooperative Principle which can not explain why people tend to express their ideas in an indirect and implicit way. In diplomacy field, politeness is one of the basic norms governing diplomat's behavior. Vagueness is always tactfully used by diplomats to achieve politeness, avoid conflict and so on, which conforms to the Politeness Principle. Among the maxims of Politeness Principle, the Tact maxim, Approbation maxim and Agreement maxim are frequently observed by diplomats.

The Fuzziness Principles of Language Teaching and Its Applications in Second Language Learning

Fuzziness is the nature of language. If the students can make full use of the fuzziness in language, their communicative competence will be greatly improved. So the fuzziness principles are advanced here to guide language teaching, which are the principle of tolerance ambiguity and the principle of active selection. And teachers should try to cultivate the students＇ cognitive learning style of inference, guessing, and association. In this way the students＇ communicative competence of using L2 will be improved.

A Contrastive Analysis in Language and Register Style of the Two English Versions of Jin’s Yizuo Changqiao

This paper is a contrastive study of two translated versions of an essay which are very different in language and register style. It comes to the conclusion that the translator has to follow the fundamental translation principle of functional equivalence, that is, to faithfully reproduce the linguistic and stylistic features of the original, while retaining the verbal beauty of the original as much as possible. Through contrastive analysis, this paper also argues that stylistic features should be consistent with the choice of word, syntactic structures, rhetorical devices, and overall textual layout.

A Study on the Iconicity of English Language

Throughout the history, arbitrariness put forward by Saussure has been regarded as one of the most designing features of language. Saussure claimed that there is no interrelationship between the signifier and signified, or such relationship can't be testified but conventional. Later, the famous linguists Peirce and Haiman, who have made great contribution to the ever-heated theory of iconicity, reveal another feature of the language. The purpose of this paper is not to deny the arbitrary nature of language, but to suggest that the nature of language is a combination of arbitrariness and iconicity.

A Comparative Study of Politeness Principle in Chinese and English Language and Culture

Politeness is the badge of human civilization,and a significant criterion to human society activity; politeness,as a social phenomenon,is the imperative tool and method to maintain human relation in perfect harmony; politeness is a kind of social conventions,it lays certain restraints on all the social members. From ancient to modern times,either in East or West,people always attach great importance to politeness. To save face of the speaker or the hearer,politeness is of considerable practical significance in the conversation. As a matter of fact,its value can never be underestimated. However,due to different historical,lingual and cultural backgrounds,different societies may have different criteria to politeness. And this leads to some problems such as misunderstandings and embarrassments in cross-cultural or intercultural communication. In order to solve these problems,many scholars and linguists at home and abroad have proposed different principles of politeness so far. The author aims to make a comparative study on politeness principles between Chinese and English language and cultures. Analyzing the differences can help to remove the communicative barrier encountered by people who come from different countries with different cultural backgrounds and effectively promote further mutual understanding and cross-cultural communication.

On General Principles of Second Language Acquisition

It is hard to set a precise date on when second language acquisition research first established itself as a field of enquiry. The paper is to stress the principles of second language acquisition. There are many to discuss but in my point of view are mainly the following eight： Language acquisition is changeable and language acquisition is cultural acquisition and long-term process, and at the same time social factors, individual learners＇ differences, native language proficiency and multi-language dictionary should all be considered while in research of the language acquisition. What＇s more, much attention should be paid to second language acquisition since it is not only useful in acauisition of language but also in the field of natural science.

Principles of＂Constructivism＂ in Foreign Language Teaching

The core ideas of Constructivism were mentioned by John Dewey, so it is not a new idea. Constructivism claims that each learner constructs knowledge individually and socially. And this kind of difference will definitely be embodied in language. Politeness principles can apply to all languages, but it may have different representations in different cultures. Recognizing these differences may help us improve intercultural communication and behave more polite in intercultural communication.
