The aims of the revised WHO manual include improving the 'quality of semen analysis' without any restriction to clinical use. Furthermore, the manual states that semen analysis may be useful for (a) 'investigating male fertility status' and (b) 'monitoring spermatogenesis during and following male fertility regula- tion.' However, if the analysis of ejaculated spermatozoa is intended for the purposes described in (b), then cells that are abnormal at spermiation must be identified. This paper takes the position that the manual does not identify methods to estimate the quality of spermatozoa at spermiation. Instead, it uses a 'gold standard' of sperm passing through the cervical mucus or arriving near the site of fertilization. Although this standard is appropriate for drawing conclusions regarding the probability that an individual could impregnate his partner, it is not appropriate for studying illness of the testes per se. Herein, the measures of sperm quality presented in the WHO manual are critiqued with respect to the detection of spermatozoa that were abnormal at spermiation vs. those that became abnormal subsequently. Quality assessments based on the percentage of motile or 'viable' spermatozoa are meaningless. Alternative quality attributes defining spermatozoa at spermiation are presented in this paper. In conclusion, assessment of spermatozoal quality at spermiation, on the basis of quality attributes of individual ejaculated spermatozoa, is best achieved through application of (a) a new paradigm for the morphological evaluation of sperm quality and (b) modern analytical techniques to evaluate, in an adequate sample, several appropriate independent attributes in each spermatozoon in order to more accurately identify the proportion of abnormal spermatozoa.展开更多

Depression, cognitive impairment, coping strategies, dyskinesia, gait disorders and complications of dopaminergic drugs are the variables that most affect health-related quality of life. The ecological model of human development focuses attention on both individual and social environmental factors as targets for health interventions. From this perspective, the aim of this cross-sectional survey was to evaluate the influence of gender, family size and perceived autonomy on health-related quality of life in Parkinson's disease patients in nOrtheastern Sicily, Italy. Ninety Parkinson's disease patients, attending the Movement Disorders Clinic at IRCCS Centro Neurolesi "Bonino-Pulejo" (Messina), were consecutively enrolled. The Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale motor subscale (UPDRS-Ⅲ) scores, the Parkinson Disease Questionnaire-39 Item scores (as a disease-specific measure of health-related quality of life), scores on the Short Form (36) Health Survey Questionnaire (as a generic measure), and answers to a brief checklist were recorded. A total of 85 Parkinson's disease patients (49% males and 51% females; mean age 70.8 ± 8.6 years mean UPDRS-Ⅲ 24.15 ± 6.55; mean disease duration 5.52 ± 4.65 years) completed the booklet of questionnaires. In the multivariate regression analysis, we included clinical and social variables as independent predictors of health-related quality of life. Our results suggest a potential compounding effect of ecological intrapersonal and interpersonal levels on health-related quality of life outcomes. Gender, self-evaluated autonomy and family size significantly impacted health-related quality of life. If quality of life is used as an indicator of treatment outcomes, an ecological perspective of the case history will be important to disclose relevant prognostic information and trigger personalized health care interventions.展开更多

In the present study, we compared gray matter images of 32 patients with Parkinson’s disease and 25 healthy controls using voxel-based morphometry based on 3.0 T high-field magnetic resonance T1-weighted imaging and clinical neurological scale scores. Results showed that the scores in Mini-Mental State Examination and Montreal Cognitive Assessment were lower in patients compared with controls. In particular, the scores of visuospatial/executive function items in Montreal Cognitive Assessment were significantly reduced, but mean scores of non-motor symptoms significantly increased, in patients with Parkinson’s dis-ease. In addition, gray matter volume was significantly diminished in Parkinson’s disease patients compared with normal controls, including bilateral temporal lobe, bilateral occipital lobe, bilateral parietal lobe, bilateral frontal lobe, bilateral insular lobe, bilateral parahippocampal gyrus, bilateral amygdale, right uncus, and right posterior lobe of the cerebel um. These findings indicate that voxel-based morphometry can accurately and quantitatively assess the loss of gray matter volume in patients with Parkinson's disease, and provide essential neuroimaging evidence for multisystem pathological mechanisms involved in Parkinson’s disease.展开更多

The aim of this work was to synthesize polymeric binders via radical copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) with maleic anhydride (MA) and with 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS). The chemical structures of the prepared binders were characterized by FTIR and 1HNMR analysis. The rheology of the prepared binders was also investigated. The prepared binders were applied in paper coating suspensions and their effects on optical, mechanical, and physical properties in addition to printability of the coated paper were studied. The results showed that acrylic maleic anhydride copolymers increased the adhesion, gave good film forming properties and good surface activity which increased print quality of paper coating. It was also found that MA/AA (50:50) and the blend between MA/AA (50:50) with AMPS:AA (30:70) have more suitable coating film properties and have highest pick resistance which is resemble to the commercial binder.展开更多

Consequently, the examination of chloride ions contained in reinforced concrete becomes an important part of a complete quality control procedure. To effectively check the concentration of chloride ions in concrete, the evaluation process should be accurate and precise. Laboratory data ob- tained using existing evaluation methods for the examination of chloride ion are not sufficiently objective to yield reliable results with accuracy and consistency for each sample. An evaluation algorithm with capability to define indices of precision degree (Ep) and accuracy degree (Ea) is presented in this paper. The authors established a statistically reliable index of unbiased estimators and equations to critically examine the laboratory methods’ precision, accuracy degrees and application value for measuring chlorine ion concentration in reinforced concrete.展开更多

It was also found that MA/AA (50:50) and the blend between MA/AA (50:50) with AMPS:AA (30:70) have more suitable coating film properties and have highest pick resistance which is resemble to the commercial binder.

文摘The chloride ion contained in reinforced concrete seriously corrodes the steel surface and damages concrete, resulting in inferior reinforced concrete that strength seriously compromises the entire structure’s safety. The authors established a statistically reliable index of unbiased estimators and equations to critically examine the laboratory methods’ precision, accuracy degrees and application value for measuring chlorine ion concentration in reinforced concrete.
文摘Objective:To investigate the effect of dualperspective nursing intervention based on safety and comfort needs on the psychological status and safety quality of patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).Methods:A total of 100 patients who received MRI in our hospital from October 2017 to December 2019 were selected and randomly divided into two groups,50 cases for each group.Routine nursing intervention was performed in the control group, and double-perspective nursing intervention based on safety and comfort needs in addition to routine nursing was performed in the observation group.Psychological status and examination of safety quality were observed and compared between the two groups. Results:The scores of self-rating anxiety scale(SAS)and self-rating depression scale(SDS)in the observation group were lower than those in the control group after intervention.Meanwhile, the scores of early treatment of dangerous conditions, implementation of safety measures, prevention of accidental injuries, communication of safety information, education of safety knowledge, standardized examination and awareness of self-safety management in the observation group were higher than those in the control group after intervention, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion:Dual-perspective nursing intervention based on safety and comfort needs is effective for patients undergoing MRI examination, which can improve the psychological status of patients and improve the quality of examination safety.
文摘Aim: To evaluate the influence of identifying victims of air disasters in São Paulo on experts’ quality of life (QoL). Methods: QoL was evaluated using the abbreviated version of the World Health Organization (WHO) quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-bref). We assessed 29 forensic experts who worked in air disasters in São Paulo and 29 experts who have not worked. The results were analyzed with Student’s t-tests;we compared the QoL scores of individuals at the time of the accident with their current QoL scores, and the scores of the control group were compared with the current scores of the disaster group. Results: Statistical analyses revealed a significant decrease in forensic expert QoL when they worked at the accident site, and this result was evident in all WHOQOL-bref domains. No significant difference was observed between the experts’ current QoL scores and those of the control group. Conclusions: The identification of air disaster victims in the city of São Paulo significantly decreased expert health-related QoL (HRQoL) with regard to physical and psychological aspects, social relationships and environment domains. This disturbance on the QoL was not persistent over the years.
