The large scale universe is full of mystery;the dark matter and dark energy amount to respective 23%and 73%of the total energy of the universe,whereas the rest 4%of the total energy is attributed to the normal materia...The large scale universe is full of mystery;the dark matter and dark energy amount to respective 23%and 73%of the total energy of the universe,whereas the rest 4%of the total energy is attributed to the normal material world which can be comprehended by the present science.In the nano-scale quantum world,the EPR(Einstein,Podolsky,and Rosen)paradox and Bells formalism and its experimental tests demonstrated that there is an intrinsic nonlocality present in the quantum world through quantum entanglement which is against the relativity that the information communication between two quanta cannot exceed the speed of light.Even more seriously is the philosophical problem why a deterministic Schrodinger equation describes a particle resulting in a probability interpretation of the particle.In the medium size of the universe,the human brain is mysterious;the human all have consciousness that is the subjective awareness of the inner and outer world which is hard to comprehend in physics;some paranormal phenomena due to the action of the consciousness like finger reading,remote viewing,psychokinesis are even harder to understand.In order to explain these large,medium,and small scale bewildering phenomena in the universe,I proposed two hypotheses in 2014(Lee,2014):(1)The real universe is a complex universe consisting of 8 dimensional(8D)space-time.In addition to our familiar 4D real space-time(Yang),there exists another 4D imaginary space-time(Yin)full of consciousness and information websites which are part of the dark matter.(2)When an object is in a quantum state,the imaginary part of its complex wavefunction(or quantum field)represents the consciousness of the object;the content of the consciousness is determined by the space-time geometry of the real part of the complex wavefunction(quantum mind).This hypothesis provides a scientific basis for pan-psychism that everything has a soul but so long as it enters into the quantum state.展开更多
Toluene insoluble matter (TIM) in coker heavy gas oil (CHGO) from oil sands bitumen is harmful to the downstream hydrotreating, and it may be difficult to be removed by conventional filtration. In order to determine i...Toluene insoluble matter (TIM) in coker heavy gas oil (CHGO) from oil sands bitumen is harmful to the downstream hydrotreating, and it may be difficult to be removed by conventional filtration. In order to determine its origin, the TIM must first be separated from CHGO for characterization. Two techniques are described to acomplish this goal. In the ultra-centrifugation approach used in this work, CHGO is blended with a miscible liquid and centrifuged under 366000 G (gravity) force. Through this procedure toluene and hexane diluents yielded TIM contents of 24μg.g^-1 and 88μg.g^-1 respectively. In an alternative simplified procedure, the initial ultracentrifugation step is omitted. Several different solvents are evaluated for use as diluents but, in each case, toluene is still used in the subsequent washing steps. TIM contents determined by this method range from 23 to about 200μg.g^-1. The amount of TIM separated by means of this method depends primarily on the initial diluent used.Other conditions, such as diluent-oil ratio, water-oil ratio, mixing time, temperature and water pH value, are also studied.展开更多
Understanding and controlling phase separation in nonequilibrium colloidal systems are of both fundamental and applied importance.In this article,we investigate the spatiotemporal control of phase separation in chemic...Understanding and controlling phase separation in nonequilibrium colloidal systems are of both fundamental and applied importance.In this article,we investigate the spatiotemporal control of phase separation in chemically active immotile colloids.We show that a population of silver colloids can spontaneously phase separate into dense clusters in hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))due to phoretic attraction.The characteristic length of the formed pattern was quantified and monitored over time,revealing a growth and coarsening phase with different growth kinetics.By tuning the trigger frequency of light,the lengths and growth kinetics of the clusters formed by silver colloids in H_(2)O_(2)can be controlled.In addition,structured light was used to precisely control the shape,size,and contour of the phase-separated patterns.This study provides insight into the microscopic details of the phase separation of chemically active colloids induced by phoretic attraction,and presents a generic strategy for controlling the spatiotemporal evolution of the resulting mesoscopic patterns.展开更多

Thus, the general system theory (GST) proposed by Bertalanffy (1968) and developed by many others e.g. Bunge (1977;1979;1983a;1983b) and Maturana and Varela (1980;1987) could be treated as a theory of everything (TOE). However, it is well-known that the present version of GST has not reached the level of TOE because it lacks a clear ontology. Currently, quantum mechanics (QM), Newtonian mechanics (NM) and general relativity (GR), suitable for microscopic, macroscopic and cosmic phenomena respectively are based on very different ontologies. In this paper, a unified ontology for the general system theory which could be applied to any scale from micro to cosmic is proposed. First, using a 7-billion-year-old gamma-ray burst, Nemiroff (2012) showed that quantum foam could not exists. And second, Solomon (2011) showed that gravitational acceleration is not associated with the gravitating mass, that gravitational acceleration g is determined solely by τ the change in time dilation over a specific height multiplied by c2 or g = τc2. Seeking consistency with Special Theory of Relativity, as means to initiate this rethink, this paper examines 12 inconsistencies in physical theories that manifest from empirical data. The purpose of this examination is to identify how gravitational theories need to change or be explored, to eliminate these 12 inconsistencies. It is then proposed that spacetime is much more sophisticated than just a 4-dimensional continuum. And, that the Universe consists of at least two layers or “kenos” (Greek for vacuous), the 4-dimensional kenos, spacetime (x, y, z, t) and the 3-dimensional kenos, subspace (x, y, z) that are joined at the space coordinates (x, y, z). This explains why electromagnetic waves are transverse, and how probabilities are implemented in Nature.
