Teaching American Culture to Chinese Students

As an international language, English is now spoken by more and more people as a first, second or foreign language. The Chinese students tends to ignore the American culture when they are learning the language of English. This paper puts forward the view that teaching American culture plays a significant role in helping the Chinese students learn English and the English teachers have the responsibility to teach American culture to Chinese students.

Misperceptions of Chinese People about North American Culture

Cultural knowledge has some influence on successful inter-cultural communication.In order to help Chinese people communicate well with foreigners,this paper discusses some misperceptions of Chinese people about North American culture based on the data collected from several Chinese and American participants.And MK.Mayer's model of basic values and Kluckhohn-Strodtotbeck's model are adopted to analyze the reasons why Chinese people have such misperceptions.Based on the findings,three suggestions are provided to help Chinese to overcome some misperceptions with the hope that they can conduct a good communication with foreigners.

On Chinese Collectivism and American Individualism in Food Culture

The thesis analysis Chinese collectivism and American individualism mainly from food culture.The thesis has four parts.The first part expounds the two different values' concept.The second part analysis the two different values in detail from the way of cooking,diet style,dietary ideas and different types of payment through comparison.Chinese pay attention to seasoning,while America natural taste in the way of preparing;Chinese diet style is group dining system,while American diet style is individual dining system;Chinese dietary idea is emotional,while American dietary idea is rational;Chinese like my treat,American like go Dutch.The third part expounds the reasons of different values reflected in the two food culture.And it analysis the main reason from four part above mentioned in detail.The fourth part expounds that the paper aims at letting us learn about two countries' deep-structure culture hidden in food culture.And then we can keep the communication open.

Comparison between American and Chinese Cultures Based on Theories of Cultural Dimensions

This paper focuses on studying the cultural differences between China and America on the basis of the cultural dimensions presented by Hofstede,Hall,Trompenaars and Tunner,in order to raise the cultural awareness when people are interacting in these two super countries of the world.A new scale of cultural dimensions include individualism/collectivism,power distance,low/high context,and diffuse/specific.

Kluckhohn and Strodbeck＇s value model in Chinese and American culture

Culture is the holistic interrelationship of a group＇s identity, beliefs, values, activities, rules, customs, communication patterns, and institutions （Dodd, 1998）. The film——《Gua Sha Treatment》 tells the story of a Chinese family who immigrates to the Unit ed States,but falls into a series of troubles because the traditional Chinese medical therapy-Gua Sha is not understood and recognized by Americans.The film takes Gua Sha as the main line,reflecting the misunderstanding,conflict and integration caused by different cultural values be-tween China and America.This paper interprets the differences and conflicts between Chinese and American cultural values contained in the film from the perspectives of ethics,face and friendship,and points out that mutual adaptation and tolerance are effective meth-ods to overcome cultural barriers and improve the quality of communication in cross-cultural communication.

A Study of the Chinese Americans＇ Dreams in Gish Jen＇s Typical American

Published in 1991, Jen＇s Typical American depicts a first-generation Chinese immigrant family＇s pursuing their American Dream in the Post-War American society. By choosing Chinese American immigrants as her main characters and describing their struggling in the American society, Jen expresses her understanding of being Americans. In the novel, as they move from ＂sojourners＂ to American citizens, the Chang family shows different attitude towards Chinese and American cultural values. The dreams they pursue also vary. This thesis, through an analysis of the dreams the Chang family pursue in Typical American, attempts to demonstrate how the Chang family identify with their cultural identities in this process, and how they evolve from ＂sojourners＂ to ＂typical Americans＂.

Refusal Speech Acts in Chinese and American English

Refusals are frequently performed in our daily lives.Based on the speech act theory of Austin and Searle,with the theoretical frame of the politeness theory put forward by Brown and Levinson,It presents a comparative study of speech acts of refusal in Chinese and American English.The results show that refusals vary in directness with situations and cultures;On the one hand,both languages employ the three directness types,namely the direct refusal speech act,ability of negation and indirect refusal speech act,and prefer indirect refusals.The situational variability of directness in both languages follows a similar trend.On the other hand,Americans are more direct than Chinese.Furthermore,Chinese shows the lower degree of situational variation in the use of the three directness types.People' s choices of refusal strategies are influenced by social power and social distance.From all these evidence,we maintain that the cross-linguistic differences are due to basic differences in cultural values.
