The 4,500-year old Egyptian pyramids at Giza are buildings to learn from. This paper tries to pin down the reasons for the survival of the Giza pyramids in order to reach a criterion for choosing sites for important buildings. It argues that the site selection and the geological properties of the area, being away from seismic effects,, floods and groundwater levels, the stability of the geometric form of the pyramid, the solidity of the structural engineering and precision of execution arguably are the reasons why the Great Pyramids of Giza are the only survivors of the seven wonders of the ancient world.展开更多

The anti-seismic standards provide two basic methods to analyze parameter uncertainty. Directly manually dealing with the calculated floor response spectra (FRS) values of deterministic approaches is the first method. The second method is to perform probability statistical analysis of the FRS results on the basis of the Monte Carlo method. The two methods can only reflect the overall effects of the uncertain parameters, and the results cannot be screened for a certain parameter's influence and contribution. In this study, based on the dynamic analyses of the floor response spectra of NPPs, a comprehensive index of the assessed impact for various uncertain parameters is presented and recommended, including the correlation coefficient, the regression slope coefficient and Tornado swing. To compensate for the lack of guidance in the NPP seismic standards, the proposed method can effectively be used to evaluate the contributions of various parameters from the aspects &sensitivity, acuity and statistical swing correlations. Finally, examples are provided to verify the set of indicators from systematic and intuitive perspectives, such as the uncertainty of the impact of the structure parameters and the contribution to the FRS of NPPs. The index is sensitive to different types of parameters, which provides a new technique for evaluating the anti-seismic parameters required for NPPs.展开更多

Excellent operating indexes of the existing nuclear power plants and the capability of independent design, manufacture, construction and operation are briefly enumerated. There are over thirty nuclear power plant sites in the coastal and inland areas, which have been checked or preevaluated. This proves that a solid foundation for large-scaled development of nuclear power industry has been laid and nuclear power will certainly play an important role in power supply and environment protection of China.展开更多

However, expansion of hydropower resources islimited, and with growing population and demand for electricity, the government of Uganda is considering integration of nuclearpower into its energy mix. With the current and projected grid capacity, SMR (small modular reactor) technology is attractive sincecapacity can be added incrementally. This paper therefore presents results for SMR site selection in Uganda. Starting with twentyregional areas established by the Ugandan government, a site selection process is outlined which uses four levels of screening andranking. First, exclusion criteria including seismicity, volcanic activity, water resources, and transportation distances were applied. This reduced the potential regional areas down to eight. Next, MAUT (multi-attribute utility theory) weighting was assigned to theseeight areas for: (1) distance to large population centers, (2) ease of transportation, and (3) distance to seismically or volcanically activeareas. From this ranking, four regional areas stood out and were then selected. These regions were then compared using variousattributes including access to water and integration with the developing national grid. In the final step, the lead candidate region wassubdivided into subzones to further refine the selection process.展开更多
