Post-disaster recovery and reconstruction provide an effective way to reduce the disaster vulnerability of, and promote leapfrog development in, an affected area. To date, studies that have used administrative boundaries to investigate the reconstruction of settlement space have not been able to clearly define the real boundaries of land use changes or quantify the degree of response to the ‘Build-Back-Better’ initiative, and have lacked any consideration of the fourth reconstruction stage–development period(10 years). This study constructed a mountain settlement niche and analyzed the characteristics, spatial reconstruction, and drivers of rural settlements during 2009–2019 in the upper reaches of the Minjiang River, southwest China. The results showed the following:(1) Natural factors were the basis for the formation and development of mountain settlement niches. The scale of the settlement niche and its land use structure depended on the physical geography features and the ethnic farming and grazing traditions. The settlement niche provided a realistic boundary for the spatial reconstruction.(2) The layout of residential land around cropland was the common feature of the mountain settlement niche. Of all the land use types, the roads and rural residential lands showed the most change over the 10 years;13,860 residential patches increased in size and 4,742 patches were abandoned.(3) The area of orchards, planted to reconstruct the economy in the mountains, increased by nearly 2.5 times.(4) Collapses, landslides, and debris flow disasters and the ecological red line influenced the spatial reconstruction. While the main focus of post-disaster recovery is spatial reconstruction, initiatives should include economic and spiritual recovery, and should also achieve sustainable development of the region. 展开更多

A quantitative analysis of the spatial pattern of rural settlements in the upper reaches of the Minjiang River was made with the major data sources being the relevant ETM image and the national geographical database of China (including contour line, fiver and road) at the scale of 1:250000, and using image interpretation and field investigation to obtain spatial information on rural settlements. The results of the spatial analysis technique of GIS and correlation analysis showed that most settlements (78.2 %) were located in the mountain area at 1500-2700 m altitude, and almost half in the arid valley area. More than 80.0 % of settlements had their slopes above 15°. Most settlements had good access to water resources, roads and communications, and tended to cluster close to the road network rather than the fiver. About half of the rural settlements in the study area were relatively concentrated, while the others were decentralized. Those with higher altitude usually had land with steep slope, inconvenient water and road accesses, and were located far apart from each other. In view of such a situation, further research should be done to make reasonable countermeasures on these settlements for better living conditions and ecosystem stability. 展开更多

Formation and evolution of rural settlement patterns in Lianzhou City,Guangdong Province were analyzed from the perspective of space and time,on the basis of its gazetteer and relevant historical data. The results show that Lianzhou was first founded in the sixth year of Yuanding Period of the Western Han Dynasty, and its development could be roughly classified into 6 stages according to the construction of south–north traffic lines and regional development progress, and it witnessed the fastest development in the Ming and Qing Dynasty. In terms of spatial distribution, rural settlements in the local area show spatial continuity,Lianzhou Town is the core of rural settlement growth in the city, and towns with the most concentrated rural settlements in all stages are located in central-west and northeast parts of the city, and those with lower density of rural settlements are mostly located in minority regions in the north and mountainous areas in the east.On the basis of the above facts, the paper studies the influence of natural geological conditions, immigrant, traffic, economic development and ethnic composition on the establishment and development of rural settlements in Lianzhou City. 展开更多

This paper principally focuses on the morphological differences, spatial pattern and regional types of rural settlements in Xuzhou City of Jiangsu Province in China.Using satellite images of Xuzhou City taken in 2007 and 2008 and models of exploratory spatial data analysis(ESDA) and spatial metrics, the paper conducts a quantitative analysis of the morphological pattern of rural settlements, and finds significant characteristics.First, rural settlements in Xuzhou City are significantly agglomerated in terms of their spatial distribution;meanwhile, there is significant variation in the geographical density distribution.Second, the scale of rural settlements in Xuzhou City is larger than the average in Jiangsu Province, and the histogram of the scale data is more even and more like a gamma distribution. There are a significant high-value cluster in the scale distribution, and local negative correlation between the scale and density distribution of rural settlements in Xuzhou City.Third, the morphology of rural settlements in Xuzhou City shows relative regularity with good connection and integrity, but the spatial variation of the morphology is anisotropic. Finally, according to the characteristics of density, scale, and form of rural settlements, the rural settlements of Xuzhou City are divided into three types:A high-density and point-scattered type,a low-density and cluster-like type and a mass-like and sparse type. The research findings could be used as the scientific foundation for rural planning and community rebuilding, particularly in less-developed areas. 展开更多

The rural settlements accounted for a great proportion of overall building land in China, but it still expanded in recent years along with urbanization and gradually decreasing rural population. To explore the reason for this phenomenon,an analy- sis has been made based on the investigation in a traditional agri- cultural region. This study found that socioeconomic factors,in- cluding the scale of families and its quantity, the improvement of rural public infrastructure, the change of population and the pres- sure of arable land, have effects on the expansion. The view on land tenure which has shaped in farmers minds in the long haul makes them dispose their houses cautiously, and this was the main cause of the fact that one household own more than one plot.In addition, the limitations of rural land institution are unconducive to inspiriting the transfer of farmers' building land and redevel- opment of the idle housing land. 展开更多

As early as the farming era, traditional rural settlements have been deeply rooted in our country. The geographical location of rural settlements is inextricably linked to the natural environment, transportation and social forms.China has continuously increased its modernization and transformed rural settlements with the rapid development of society, which has led to the change in the spatial form of rural settlements and led to the demise of many traditional settlements. Therefore, the culture and traditions are inevitably deplorable.Settlement is the most primitive way of living in China. Therefore,it is necessary to understand and learn the culture as well as correctly transform the rural settlement. This paper aims to study the spatial form of traditional rural settlements.Based on the background research of traditional rural settlement spatial form, this paper discusses the influencing factors of settlement spatial form and the spatial form and evolution of rural settlements. 展开更多

However, the expansion of rural settlement has not been sufficiently curbed. The questions of why this has happened and who has driven the land-use change(LUC) of rural settlement in China have aroused great interests among researchers. In this paper, it is suggested that population is not always a positive driving force for the LUC of rural settlement in China. Furthermore, socio-economic driving forces other than urbanization, population and industrialization are analyzed. On a national scale, the major driving forces are the per-capita rural housing area and the cultivated land area. On a regional scale, the main driving forces in the eastern China are the house-building capacity of rural households and the per-capita rural housing area; while in the central China, the main driving forces are rural housing investment, the proportion of primary industry employees in the rural working population, and the cultivated land area. For the western China, the main driving forces are rural register population and cultivated land area. 展开更多

Social interaction has become one of the key factors affecting the spatial reconstruction of rural settlements(SRRS).However, most studies ignored the multi-scale impact of social networks on the identification of restructuring types of rural settlements. This paper, taking Ezhou City of Hubei Province,China as the case study area, developed a potential inter-settlement network through considering settlements as nodes, and inter-settlement interactions induced by the spatial disparity of public facilities as edges, divided towns in Ezhou City into three zones based on community structure at the town level, and then identified four types of rural settlements in light of the characteristics of cluster patterns and centrality at the patch level. The results show that the inter-settlement network in Ezhou City presents apparent disparities in terms of community structure, cluster patterns and centrality. In community analysis, high inter-community and intra-community interactions are concentrated in well-developed areas in the north and east, while weak interactions between communities occur in the southern areas dominated by traditional agricultural production.Accordingly, three zones are divided such as the urban-leading zone,urban-rural integration zone and rural-leading zone. For the network centrality and cluster patterns,high-level rural settlements are mainly distributed in the urban-leading zone, followed by the urban-rural integration zone and the rural-leading zone. Moreover, the lump cluster pattern is observed in each zone, but the chain pattern and dispersed pattern largely occur in the rural-leading zone.At same time, four types of rural settlements are identified, namely urbanized settlements, central settlements, grassroots settlements and relocated settlements. The corresponding plans are discussed in different zones regarding urbanization, integration and characteristics to provide meaningful insights for policymakers to guide SRRS.This study would contribute to our understanding of the impact of social network involved in daily life on rural settlement reconstruction, and expect to provide theoretical and methodological support for rural sustainable development in practice. 展开更多

Spatial perspectives were applied to examine the processes of growth and development in rural settlements affected by tourism.Based on field surveys and GIS spatial analysis methods, we studied the spatial evolution of two villages(Jiaojiekou and Gougezhuang) in the Yesanpo tourist area over the last 25 years. The results revealed a polarization trend, with Jiaojiekou becoming a ‘hollowed' village and Gougezhuang developing into a ‘new-type' tourist town. This polarization indicates the unsustainability of rural development in tourist destinations, which is manifested by the following features: only some villages benefit from the development of tourism;there is simultaneously a shortage of land in tourist villages and a wastage of land in traditional villages;and the function of the villages is deficient.Nevertheless, the spillover of the effects of tourism may provide an opportunity for the development of traditional villages. To better utilize this opportunity,we propose that:(1) integrated rural tourism management should be developed to explore effective methods of promoting tourism as part of a rural development strategy;(2) different land use policies are required for different villages; and(3) the balance between government regulation and community participation should be emphasized. 展开更多

During the rapid urbanization period, the contradiction between demand for the construction land and the preservation of cultivated land for food security is getting more and more serious in China. With the urbanization the rural settlement land is increasing instead of decreasing; This paper aims at.finding the driving forces for rural settlement land expanston. Based on land use change survey data (1996-2006) by the Ministry of Land and Resources P. R. C., this paper find, that per capita area for rural settlement land is more than per capita area for city; township and industrial land in each province except Tibet. Besides, rural settlement land area and per capita rural settlement land area are increasing while the rural poputation is decreasing in most provinces. The main problems of rural settlement land use are low efficiency, high vacancy rate, chaotic layout and illegal occupancy. Then the driving forces [br rural settlement land expansion, including economic development, family income, family scale, psychological factors, urbanization, transportation, lack of planning, limited circulation of dwelling-house land and imperfect sociat security, ate explored based on above analysis, Finalty, policy recommendations, in view of different influencing factors, are put forward to control the disorder expansion of rural setttement land. 展开更多

For a long time, due to lack of accurate data covering large areas,it is difficult to capture the continuous spatial evolutionary trajectory of rural settlements shaped by rapid urbanization and rural land use policies. To fill this gap, based on theoretical analysis this paper systemically detected the changing characteristics of scale, spatial morphology, distribution, and land use pattern of rural settlements in Southern Jiangsu in the past 20 years depending on the data of land resource survey in 2009 and 2019.The study suggests that the total area and per capita size of rural settlements declined by 30%and 2%respectively as a result of rural land consolidation and the influx of enormous immigrants from underdeveloped regions. The spatial density and average shape index dropped by 14%and 44%respectively in the recent decade, indicating an evident trend of decentralization in spatial distribution, and regularization in the spatial morphology.Furthermore, residential land within rural settlements decreased by 33%over the past decade while the land for industry and commercial service steadily increased, demonstrating that the function for manufacturing and diversified services had been strengthened.Considering the emerging issue of the aging population and new business opportunities in rural Southern Jiangsu, rural settlements regeneration might be the focus offutureresearch. 展开更多

This study introduces the "life quality theory". Based on the mechanisms governing the interactions between rural settlement space and life quality, this study examines how to optimize the spatial organization of rural settlements. Three aspects are evaluated – the integration of rural settlement spatial functions, optimization of spatial structure, and regulation of spatial scale – with the objective of building an optimization mode and framework for the spatial organization of rural settlements with high life quality. Our results suggest the following:(1) The settlement is the spatial carrier of life quality, which is an essential settlement component, and these two aspects influence and improve each other. Therefore, reasonable rural settlement space is an important precondition for higher life quality.(2) The spatial function types of rural settlements can be divided into those that maintain livelihoods, develop industry, and upgrade life quality. Optimizing spatial organization of rural settlements based on life quality requires promoting the maintenance of livelihood, integration of industrial development, and implantation in quality improvement.(3) There are two important components of optimizing the spatial organization of rural settlements. One is promoting the organic concentration of living, agricultural, and industrial spaces, the reasonable distribution of social intercourse, recreational, and services spaces, and the organic balance of living, production, and ecological spaces, so as to reasonably optimize the combination of internal spatial types in settlements. The other is forming a functional structure level of a "comprehensive village–featured village" and building spatial organization settlement modes connected by rural roads by relocating and adjusting the function of villages. These changes would require the destruction of underdeveloped villages, retaining normal villages, enlarging important villages, and constructing new villages.(4) As an ideal mode for optimizing rural settlements space based on life quality, the Rural Road-Oriented Development Model(RROD model) should be built at a rational scale for unit settlement and distance between settlements, leading to a fully functional RROD system with rational structure, auxiliary facility, and well-organized distribution. 展开更多

Rural tourism has become an important driving force of rural urbanization in China. As the main reception base and important tourism attraction, tourism village is the core element of the tourism destination system. Integrating the method of PRA (Participatory Rural Assessment), GIS technology and high-resolution remote sensing images, this study aims to analyze the spatial morphology evolution of rural settlements induced by tourism through a comparative study of three tourism villages in Yesanpo tourism area. The results suggest the emergence of a "core-periphery" pattern of the spatial evolution of rural settlements. The closer to the core scenic spot, the higher degree of land-use intensity the village shows, as well as the more mature tourism function and greater change in landscape pattern. In particular, Gougezhuang shows an increase of the floor area ratio from 0.17 to 0.44, with the most mature tourism function and the lowest authenticity index of 0.448. Liujiahe has gone through the largest increase in construction land area from 17.3564 ha to 34.1128 ha, with moderately mature tourism function and relatively stable authenticity index of 0.566. Shangzhuang has the lowest construction land scale and intensity, with the poorest tourism function and most well-preserved landscape authenticity index of 0.942. Overall, in terms of the spatial morphology, the three villages show the characteristics of "modern town", "semi-urbanization" and "traditional village" respectively, in corresponding to three land de- velopment types: "intensive reconstruction type", "enclave extension type" and "in situ utilization type". The spatial evolution patterns of these three villages imply the spatial characteristics of the touristization of traditional villages in different stages, and also have great representative value for the management of rural settlements in tourism areas in China. 展开更多

Global climate change has caused general and serious damage to cultural heritage sites, and earthen settlements and buildings are particularly vulnerable to water-afected disasters. Thus, this paper uses Liang Village in Pingyao County,China,as a case study, linking the human–land study in the Liang Village Sino-French workshop of 2009/2010 to a disaster assessment completed after the devastating rainstorm in October 2021.We found that the village’s rain disaster resulted from the vulnerability of earthen material to rainstorms and from the earthen settlement’s evolution from a culture emphasising the coexistence of‘water and earth’to a technic fostering the disintegration of‘water and earth’.The latter is the main cause of the village’s decrease in its capacity for disaster prevention and damage reduction. Therefore,in the context of global climate change,we fnd that the reestablishment of the harmonious relationship of water and earth is critical to both rural heritage conservation and village sustainable development. In addition to repairing their relation from the technical perspective of‘planning and design’by planners and architects,it is more crucial for local people to understand and enhance their contemporary appreciation for the traditional‘coexistence of water and earth’concept.
