A Training Effect by Three-Month Watering on the Frontal Pole Activation of Healthy Older Adults

The effectiveness of training prefrontal lobe function for suppressing cognitive decline or improving cognitive function has been reported. Some epidemiological studies suggested that gardening activities can contribute to suppression of cognitive decline. In our previous studies using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), we reported the possibility of frontal pole (FP) activation of healthy older adults during gardening activities in the quasi-laboratory setting. The objective of this study was to examine the impacts of a three-month continual practice of the watering task in the actual gardening settings on the FP activation of healthy older adults. The participants were 18 right-handed healthy older adults without a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or dementia (M = 71.7 years ± SD 5.0, range: 63 - 84 years) who lived independently at home. We asked the participants to continue watering at home for three months in the same way as the research task in the fNIRS measurement. After a three-month intervention, the participants’ task performance improved compared with that of pre-intervention. In addition, the Oxy-Hb values in the right lateral FP during the third trial in the post-intervention measurement were significantly greater compared with the pre-intervention measurement. This study suggested that even a gardening activity with a small number of processes such as watering, if the activity is continued for a certain period of time, can suppress the decline of the FP activation of healthy older adults. Combination of various gardening activities has the potential to be a further cognitive training for activating the FP.

Research capacity and training needs of nurses’in Shanghai,China:A multicenter,cross-sectional survey

Aims:The aim of this study is to investigate nurses’research capacity and related training needs in Shanghai to provide evidence to further nursing research training.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional design with a convenience sample of 1226 clinical registered nurses,including the Nursing Research Capacity of Self-Evaluation Questionnaire and Research Training Needs Form,was recruited from 14 public hospitals in Shanghai,China.And the influencing factors of nurses’research capacity were analyzed.Results:The mean score of nurses’research capacity was(46.25±22.90)in Shanghai,that was at a low-to-medium level.The influencing factors of nurses’research capacity including age(F=15.983,P<0.001),education(F=20.738,P<0.001),professional title(F=6.993,P=0.001),working years(F=7.803,P<0.001),department(F=8.545,P<0.001),and position(F=−3.354,P=0.001).The most critical factor is the time to participate a study(P<0.001).And what the nurses demanded were writing skills,special lectures,and participating in colleagues’projects mostly.Conclusion:Nurse’s scientific research capacity still needs to be improved in Shanghai.The key to improving this situation is the individualized scientific research training and education for nurses and the practice of more participation in scientific research projects.

Understanding Good Language Learners’ Writing Strategy Use in the Chinese EFL Context: A Sociocultural Perspective

Strategy studies have been a well-established field in second language writing research and this article investigates English as a foreign language （EFL） learners＇ writing strategy use from a sociocultural perspective. Unlike the traditional focus on internal cognitive mechanisms in writing strategy studies, this sociocultural approach highlights the dialectic relationship between cognition and the sociocultural context and the importance of mediating resources in strategy use. Six proficient English majors from a Chinese university participated in the study, and data about their writing experience were collected through interviews. The findings showed that the participants used four types of writing strategies： artifact-mediated, rule-mediated, community-mediated, and role-mediated strategies. Other features of their strategy use include the diversity of mediating resources, idiosyncratic use of these resources, and the common goal to enhance their language knowledge and writing ability. Drawing on these findings, it is suggested that teachers can reconfigure the sociocultural context of writing activities to help students enhance their strategy use and possible ways include artifact manipulation and community construction.
