Discourse Analysis in Translation of Chinese Literature: The Case Study of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s Translation of Kong Yiji

Since the early 1970s,discourse analysis has garnered significant attention across various academic disciplines,marked by the proliferation of numerous theoretical frameworks.Then the profound impact of discourse analysis on the field of translation research has become increasingly apparent,with a substantial body of translation studies embracing the discourse analysis approach.The disciplinary significance of discourse analysis has become undeniable.Contemporary China is in a relatively weak position in global cultural communication.To advance Chinese culture on the global stage,Chinese literary works serve as a precious channel.To effectively showcase the unique qualities of Chinese literature,translators must consider a multitude of influencing factors and address them judiciously to enable target language readers to fully immerse themselves in the essence of Chinese literary artistry.This paper takes Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s translation of Kong Yiji as an example to elucidate the function of discourse analysis in translation of Chinese literature.

Discussion on the Translation of Chinese Ancient Literatures

The Chinese ancient literature has a long history.More and more foreign friends give strong interest into reading and learning it.However,not all the foreign people are proficient at classical Chinese,the metre and rhyme of Chinese poems,thus,translators have to translate these words into English or other languages,which brought a discussion about whether the Chinese ancient poems can be translated or not.This paper starts from this very point,to analyze current situation of the research on Chinese ancient literatures translation,taking Chinese ancient poems as examples,to discuss this topic,and to give opinions and possible solutions.

The Renditions Series and Modern Chinese Literature’s “Going-out”: Its Model and Enlightenment of Translation, Communication and Dissemination

In the process of Chinese Literature’s “Going-out” project, it istypical of the dilemma faced by the external translation and dissemination of modernChinese literature. The Renditions Series serves as a classical case of providing aneffective model of “literature’s overseas distribution”. The successful experience of itstranslating-cum-disseminating model can be concluded as follows: all the translatorsare from China and overseas with cross-cultural background; the selection oftranslation is stylistically far-ranging among the Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong,and feminine literature in modern China is highly valued; translating method aims atconvoying the original literary aesthetics, and disseminating channels are manifold;the foreign recipients are common and professional readers; the eminent effects canbe proved by its considerable sales, library collections and acceptance in the targetcountries and regions. From the successful model of translation of Renditions Series,five implications can be made out for the modern Chinese literature’s “Going-global”:domestic and overseas translators cooperate well with all-round cultural identities; theselection holds onto diversification and literary character; various spreading channelsshould be broadened; target readers should be accurately located and continuouslywidened; translating and disseminating effects can be focused on and analyzed, so asto adjust and improve the corresponding sections in the model.

For Foreign-Oriented Chinese Literature Translation,What Inspirations Can Be Derived from the Carrying out of the Translation Project of the King James Version of The Bible?

Inspired by the“One Belt,One Road”initiative and the“Going Global”strategy,China has become more deeply involved in foreign exchange.The introduction of Chinese literature to the outside world has been part of China’s soft-power strategy.However,it must be acknowledged that the quality of Chinese literature translation is not satisfactory for several reasons:essentially,issues relating to project management,translators’qualifications,and translation quality control.This essay reviews the translation practice that gave rise to the King James Bible(KJB),with a focus on its project management,translators’qualifications and quality control.It is hoped that this will serve to enlighten professionals in the field of Chinese literature translation.

The Poison of Polygamy:Genre of the English Translation

When the Chinese-language The Poison of Polygamy was translated into English,some critics identified the work as picaresque.Skeptical of this conclusion,the author of this paper broadens the field of inquiry to suggest classification in an emigrant sensational genre.Briefly,the first two plots of the multi-strand work unfold the adventures of Chinese emigrants travelling by sea and land to Melbourne’s Gold Mountain.Interestingly,we are also afforded a glimpse of emigrant miners’cooperation regardless of race and colour when a mine disaster occurs.The work provides sharp recognition of migrants’dilemmas,such as marriage,before tackling the bigamy issue,the gender war,the fallen lifestyle of the female protagonist and so on.As the work unfolds,further shocking tales of murders and indulgence are revealed.Unlike the picareque’s episodic style,the translated Poison of Polygamy is coherent,realistic,serious and critical,and completely lacking in both sarcasm and playfulness.To investigate the appropriateness of assigning the work to the picaresque genre,the paper compares briefly with representative Spanish picaresque works such as Lazarillo and Gusman and English canonical Moll Flanders,watching carefully for commonalities.However,The Poison of Polygamy would seem to resonate more with Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret,a sensational fiction which shocked the English world in the 1860s.The contexts of both novels are close,mid-Victorian and Edwardian,where the latter is a continuation of the Victorians.The author is further enlightened by research results of literary translators who advocate that a text,once translated into a target language,becomes a canon of that culture and is cherished as such by its readers-as in the case of Shakespeare being revered as a German poet when read in translation.From this experiment the paper deems that cross-lingual comparative literature is not only possible but significant and resourceful.

On the Strategic Paths of the Going Global Strategy of Chinese Literature

The going global strategy of Chinese literature is a vital part of the going global strategy of Chinese culture. In recent years,the Chinese government has launched and strongly supported a series of activities and projects to promote this strategy,but little effect has been produced. Starting from analyzing the predicament and reasons of the current strategy,the essay suggests four strategic paths: enhancing the overall strength of the country to promote the international influence of Chinese culture,strengthening cultural awareness and cultural introspection,integrating the nationality and cosmopolitan of literature and establishing a market-oriented literary translation mechanism.

Analysis of publication dissemination of Chinese present current literature work English translation and research methodologies

As a systematic work, there are very close links between the various aspects of the English translation of Chinese modern and contemporary literary works, whether they are translated into the main body, translated content and other links, or a specific translation approach, are not segmentation. However with English-Chinese “borrowism” compared with, English work that translates the Chinese present current literature work, no matter in quantity and quality, infi uence and other aspects that the work itself has appear the relative backwardness. In order to promote the modern and contemporary Chinese literary works in the world, it is necessary to analyze and study the English translation of Chinese modern and contemporary literary works and the research methods.

On the English Version of A Dream in Red Mansions Translated by Liu Wuji

In An Introduction to Chinese Literature written by Liu Wuji,there are six translations of the passages in A Dream in Red Mansions,of which the Chinese version is the Zhiyanzhai version.Recently,it is doubted whether the six translations are all quoted.Through detailed analysis and literature review,this paper finds out that the translations of A Dream in Red Mansions are all translated by Liu Wuji,and the Chinese version is the Chengyi Version.

传播学视域下辽宁民间文学类非物质文化遗产翻译研究

采用文献综述法对传播学理论进行梳理,针对辽宁民间文学类非物质文化遗产翻译现状及存在的问题,分析其翻译原则和策略。发现遵循文化交流互通原则采用增译法翻译故事发生的历史背景和专有名词,既能保留文化特色,又能照顾译语受众的接受能力;遵循译语受众原则对地方性和口语化的词汇采用意译法可增强译本的可接受性,采用改译法将流散型的汉语句子改译为句式严谨的英语句子,符合译语受众的期待。结果表明:传播学对指导辽宁民间文学类非物质文化遗产翻译具有重要意义。

茶叶风靡英伦三岛,成为“国民饮品”的同时也走上了文人的书桌,走进了诗人的颂歌。以质性研究软件NVivo 12为工具,以11部题材各异的英语文学作品为研究样本,对其指涉的茶文化进行编码赋值。质性数据表明,英语文学作品的茶文化表现为物态文化、体制文化、行为文化和心态文化四大范式。在文学与茶的联姻中,物态文化和行为文化处于叙事模式建构的主要地位,体制文化受到故事主题的宰制最为明显;心态文化蕴含英伦茶风的哲学思考,游动于众多文学作品之中。数据揭示了英语文学作品的茶语特征,即以茶为媒的本土意识、音义结合的茶名及茶意象的美学赋予。基于以上发现,以功能对等翻译理论为指导,得出英语文学作品茶文化汉译的三大启示:尊重茶文化差异;合理进行翻译补偿;再现茶物语言的诗性美感。

当代中国乡土文学英译路径探析:以莫言与贾平凹为例

作为中国乡土文学的集大成者,莫言与贾平凹创作体量相当,所获荣誉相近,国内影响力难分伯仲,然就中长篇小说英译情况而言,二者在英译作品数量及译介效果方面相去甚远。莫言小说在译者、出版社及作家等的共同努力之下得以有效推介,而贾平凹小说却因创作手法、译者模式、传播途径以及读者定位的不足尚未取得良好传播实绩。系统梳理莫言与贾平凹中长篇小说英译活动的差异,并借鉴传播学相关概念,可以构建中国乡土文学的英译传播路径,助力中国乡土文学“走出去”。
