To preserve this important watercourse and ensure the sustainability of its services, selecting and implementing appropriates restorations techniques is vital. In this context, the purpose of this paper was to present an overview of the actions and techniques that can be implemented for the restoration/rehabilitation of the Faleme. The methodological approach includes field investigation, water sampling, literature review with cases studies and SWOT analysis of the four methods presented: river dredging, constructed wetlands, floating treatment wetlands and chemical precipitation (coagulation and flocculation). The study confirmed the pollution of the river by suspended solids (TSS > 1100 mg/L) and heavy metals such as iron, zinc, aluminium, and arsenic. For the restoration methods, it was illustrated through description of their mode of operation and through some case studies presented, that all the four methods have proven their effectiveness in treating rivers but have differences in their costs, their sustainability (detrimental to living organisms or causing a second pollution) and social acceptance. They also have weaknesses and issues that must be addressed to ensure success of rehabilitation. For the case of the Faleme river, after analysis, floating treatment wetlands are highly recommended for their low cost, good removal efficiency if the vulnerability of the raft and buoyancy to strong waves and flow is under control.展开更多

The results show that there is direct relation between the nitrogen content variation in river water and that in wastewater from cities and runoff water of both banks of the river. Nitrate and nitrite contents in water in flood period are higher than that in mid and low water periods. In flood period, nitrate content in water increases gradually with the extension of river section, ammonia content in polluted river section is higher than that in unpolluted river section. Nitrate and nitrite contents in water in the flood, mid and low water periods from 1985 to 1989 were slightly higher than that from 1980 to 1984 and from 1990 to 1994, ammonia content in water increased annually.展开更多

Thus, many consider it as an empirical equation and fixed power law exponents such as 1/6 and 1/7 are generally applied. However, exponent of power law is an index representing bed resistance related with relative roughness and furthermore influences the shapes of vertical velocity distribution. The purpose of this study is to investigate characteristics of vertical velocity distribution of the natural rivers by testing and optimizing previous methods used for determination of power law exponent with vertical velocity distribution data collected with ADCPs during the years of 2005 to 2009 from rivers in South Korea. Roughness coefficient has been calculated from the equation of Limerinos. And using theoretical and empirical formulae, and representing relationships between bed resistance and power law exponent, it has been evaluated whether the exponents suggested by these equations appropriately reproduce vertical velocity distribution of actual rivers. As a result, it has been confirmed that there is an increasing trend of power law exponent as bed resistance increases. Therefore, in order to correctly predict vertical velocity distribution in the natural rivers, it is necessary to use an exponent that reflects flow conditions at the field.展开更多

Going towards sustainable cities where harmony exists between economic, socio-cultural and environmental issues is a necessity that is essential if we want to bequeath a livable world to future generations. Cities produce huge quantities of domestic and industrial waste, the management of which is becoming a growing problem for city managers. Located on the banks of the Niger River, the city of Niamey, capital of the Republic of Niger, is supplied with drinking water from this river. Significant quantities of sludge are produced by the plant following the treatment of this water. This study focuses on the physico-chemical characterization of this sludge which is now directly discharged into the Niger River. A total of 12 samples of pasty sludge taken from the pre-settling ponds were analyzed. The samples were previously dried, crushed, sieved and packaged. Physical (pH, EC and particle size), chemical (Ca, Mg, Na, K, CEC, AE, P, C, MO and N) and metallic trace elements (Pb, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Mn) parameters and Al) were analyzed in the laboratory. The results show that the sludge is weakly acidic (pH between 4.16 and 5.71), conductive (<0.35 mS/cm) and rich in fine elements (12.1% to 77.71% clay). The nutrient content is low in nitrogen (<0.25%), phosphorus (<2.5 ppm), potassium (between 1 to 188 Mèq/100g) and organic matter (less than 2.88%). The concentrations of ETM comply with the values admissible in residual materials (French decree of 08/01/1998). This sludge can be recovered, especially in agriculture.展开更多

VOCs removal from raw water is an important task for waterworks to guarantee drinking water security. The removal of VOCs such as chlorobenzene (CB) and ethylbenzene (EB) from raw water by air stripping was investigated under various conditions, inciuding the variation of temperature (5-30~C), pH (3.5-10.5), and air/water ratio (10-60). The air stripping removal efficiency of VOCs decreased with VOCs concentration declining in water. And Henry's law constant was demonstrated as an indicator of the estimation of VOCs removal efficiency for air stripping. The effects of temperature and the ratio of air and water were found to play a great role in VOCs removal, but the effect of pH seemed to be negligible. This study demonstrates that air stripping provides a promising opportunity in removing VOCs in drinking water treatment, especially for the relatively high concentration of VOCs.展开更多

Shanghai is one of the largest cities in the world, which is located in Changjiang (Yangtze) River Delta in China. Since the 1970s, the whole river system in Shanghai has been planned and managed by the Shanghai Water Authority. The primary management objectives in the last 30 years have been to enhance irrigation and flood-control. By using Horton-Strahler classification and Horton laws as a reference, a novel method of stream classification, in conjunction with the traditional and specially designed indicators, was applied to understanding the structure and functions of the river system in Shanghai. Correlation analysis was used to identify the interrelations among indicators. It was found that the impact of urbanization on the river system was significant although natural laws and physical characteristics marked a super-developed river system. There was an obvious correlation between the degree of urbanization and the abnormal values of some indicators. Urbanization impacts on river system such as branches engineered out, riverbank concreting and low diversity of river style were widely observed. Each indicator had distinct sensibility to urbanization so they could be used to describe different characteristics of urban river system. The function indicators were significantly related to structure indicators. Stream structure, described by fractal dimension and complexity of river system, was as important as water area ratio for maintaining river’s multi-function.展开更多

THM speciation was also noted to follow a seasonal pattern during a 2.5-year period, during which samples were collected multiple times per month. Although some treatment processes were effective at reducing the chloroform formation potential, no treatment used at this utility significantly reduced the formation of the three bromine-substituted THM species. Using chloramination rather than free chlorination for secondary disinfection, however, was effective at limiting increases in the concentration of all four regulated THM species in the distribution system.展开更多

However, it is a subjective document open to a wide range of possibilities and interpretations. Water Rights Allocations (WRAs) as described by Dinar and Nigatu (2013) and Dinar and Tsur (2017) provide a limited number of quantifiable allocation possibilities based on the UNWC. It is suggested that this methodology streamlines the negotiation process and reduces the effects of hydro hegemony. These methodologies are explored and applied through a case study on the Orontes River Basin.展开更多

文摘The landslides and rockfalls were studied in this paper from Xiangjiaba to Baihetan in the lower reach of Jinsha river. Their volume, distribution density and landslide index were studied which indicated that there existed close relationships between landslides and rockfalls and geological structure, stratum. The fold and faultage influenced on the stability of slope and offered the geological condition to landslides and rockfalls. The physiognomy controlled their distribution. Slope angles of landslides were 10 °-50°and slope angles of rockfalls were mainly 35°-50° in the valley in the studied area. The results indicated the geology and physiognomy of distribution area of the landslides and rockfalls in the studied area. They offered the theoretical foundation to prevent and cure geological disaster and protect the water power engineering.

文摘A set of techniques for well treatment aimed to enhance oil recovery are considered in the present study. These are based on the application of elastic waves of various types(dilation-wave,vibro-wave,or other acoustically induced effects). In such a context,a new technique is proposed to predict the effectiveness of the elastic-wave well treatment using the rank distribution according to Zipf’s law.It is revealed that, when the results of elastic wave well treatments are analyzed, groups of wells exploiting various geological deposits can differ in terms of their slope coefficients and free members. As the slope coefficient increases, the average increase in the well oil production rate(after the well treatment)becomes larger. An equation is obtained accordingly for estimating the slope coefficient in the Zipf’s equation from the frequency of the elastic wave. The obtained results demonstrate the applicability of the Zipf’s law in the analysis of the technological efficiency of elastic-wave well treatment methods.

文摘The efficiencies of two types of constructed wetlands for the treatment of low-concentration polluted eutrophic land- scape river water were studied in the western section of the Qingyuan River at the Minhang campus of Shanghai Jiaotong University. The first wetland was a single-stage system using gravel as a filtration medium, and the second was a three- stage system filled with combinations of gravel, zeolite, and fly ash. Results from parallel operations of the wetlands showed that the three-stage constructed wetland could remove organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus successfully. At the same time,it could also decrease ammoniacal odour in the effluent.Compared to the single-stage constructed wetland,it had better nutrient removal efficiencies with a higher removal of 19.37%-65.27% for total phosphorus (TP) and 21.56%- 62.94% for total nitrogen (TN),respectively, during the operation period of 14 weeks. In terms of removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, and blue-green algae, these two wetland systems had equivalent performances. It was also found that in the western section of the test river,in which the two constructed wetlands were located, the water quality was much better than that in the eastern and middle sections without constructed wetland because COD,TN, and TP were all in a relatively lower level and the eutrophication could be prevented completely in the western section.

文摘To study the accumulation regularity of nitrogen and phosphorus in typical constructive plants in coastal wetland, samples of Suaeda glauca(Bunge) Bunge,Phragmites austrahs and Tamarix chinensis Lour, were taken from the Yellow River Delta National Coast Wetland Nature Reserve, nitrogen and phosphorus content in plants was measured and analyzed. The results showed that ① nitrogen and phosphorus content in different wetland plants is correlated;② different species in the same place and the same species in different spaces show different accumulation regularity of nitrogen and phosphorus;③ nitrogen and phosphorus content in plants is closely related to nitrogen and phosphorus content in the habitat;④ nitrogen content in T.chinensis Lour,is the highest, the mean is 11.63 g/kg,and phosphorus content in S glauca(Bunge) Bunge is the highest, the mean is 1.38 g/kg;⑤ nitrogen content in the 3 species:T.chinensis Lour.> S.glauca(Bunge) Bunge > P.australis;⑥ nitrogen content in aboveground parts of all plants is significantly higher than that in underground parts, and phosphorus content in aboveground parts of all plants except S.glauca(Bunge) Bunge is significantly higher than that in underground parts;⑦ nitrogen content in the 3 species in the study area is significantly higher than phosphorus content in these species.
文摘The space time variation laws of nitrogen content in different river sections, water periods and years in the Second Songhua River in China is described in detail. Nitrate and nitrite contents in water in the flood, mid and low water periods from 1985 to 1989 were slightly higher than that from 1980 to 1984 and from 1990 to 1994, ammonia content in water increased annually.
文摘Information about effectiveness of a wastewater treatment plant is vital in ensuring the quality of water discharged into water bodies and the environment in general meet set standards. In this study, the performance of a wastewater treatment plant located at the Export Processing Zone(EPZ)along River Athi in Machakos County,Kenya was assessed because the final effluent from the treatment plant is released into the river where water is used downstream.Effectiveness of the plant was assessed through the reduction percentage of pollutants between influent and effluent during the dry and wet seasons.Samples of water were collected from the following points i.e.inlet,outflow pool, outlet and along the river. The samples were analyzed for heavy metals,Total Dissolved Solids(TDS),Total Suspended Solids(TSS),Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD),Biological Oxygen Demand(BOD),organic nitrogen, phosphate, color, temperature,pH,and total coliforms. The resulting data was compared with the established standards.Standard methodologies of laboratory analysis were employed as per Kenyan regulations of 2006 on waste water treatment and discharge. From the results, the waste water treatment plant was not effective in reducing nitrates, phosphates,TDS,TSS,color, and heavy metals i.e.mercury,lead,selenium,copper and cadmium. The inefficiency was more pronounced in rain season.Nitrates(-2.04%),phosphates(-66%),mercury(-48%),lead(-48%),selenium(-2.29%)and copper(-9.75%)were high in the effluent after treatment process during the rains than in the influent. However, the treatment plant was effective in reducing Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD)and Biological Oxygen Demand(BOD).Some parameters like pH,conductivity, temperature, color and TSS were within allowable values described by Kenyan and International standards for effluent discharge into public waters. The study recommends expansion or re-designing of the treatment plant and better monitoring of the sources or types of wastewaters received at the plant for efficient and proper treatment process.Further research required on the seasonal fluctuation of pollutants along River Athi to reduce pollution of the waters. This should be coupled with studying the role of river gradient in self-cleansing of the pollutants.
文摘While log law is an equation theoretically derived for near-bed region, in most cases, power law has been researched by experimental methods. Therefore, in order to correctly predict vertical velocity distribution in the natural rivers, it is necessary to use an exponent that reflects flow conditions at the field.
文摘Population growth and increasing needs make our current societies a considerable source of environmental threats. This sludge can be recovered, especially in agriculture.

文摘Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are widely used in various industrial processes and generate water pollutions. This study demonstrates that air stripping provides a promising opportunity in removing VOCs in drinking water treatment, especially for the relatively high concentration of VOCs.

文摘Trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and other chemical compounds in drinking water are known to have adverse effects on human health, animal health, and the environment. This research study will show the presence of pharmaceuticals and other chemical compounds in Flint River(Madison County,AL)and Flint Creek(Morgan County,AL).Along the Flint River, samples were taken at three sites:Winchester Road,Brian Fork, and Hobbs Road.Similarly, along Flint Creek, samples were taken at three sites:Vaughn Bridge,Mean Bridge and Red Bank Bridge. At each site, samples were taken at four locations:upland from the water, along the banks of the water,at the deposition sediment of the water, and within the surface water itself.Samples were collected and analyzed for the presence of and concentration of chemical compounds by Waypoint Analytical Laboratory using proprietary High-Pressure LC/MS/MS(Liquid Chromatography and Dual Mass Spectroscopy)methods.Between 14 and 26 chemical compounds were identified at each site, adding up to a total of 548 chemical compounds between Flint River and Flint Creek. The chemical compounds and their concentrations were recorded and then sorted into four categories:pharmaceuticals and personal care products(PPCPs),VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds),petroleum compounds, and CECs(Contaminants of Emerging Concern).Between both Flint River and Flint Creek,PPCPs were the largest category of contaminants, comprising of 46%of compounds identified. This study demonstrates that Flint River and Flint Creek are potentially hazardous to Madison County and Morgan County residents,as trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals in drinking water can cause several health issues.

文摘Urbanization can affect the physical process of river growth, modify stream structure and further influence the functions of river system. Stream structure, described by fractal dimension and complexity of river system, was as important as water area ratio for maintaining river’s multi-function.
文摘Significant fractions of bromine-substituted disinfection byproducts (DBPs)—particularly trihalomethanes (THMs)— have been observed to form during treatment of water from the Missouri River. Using chloramination rather than free chlorination for secondary disinfection, however, was effective at limiting increases in the concentration of all four regulated THM species in the distribution system.
文摘The 1997 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses (UNWC) contains a negotiation framework for transboundary water rights. These methodologies are explored and applied through a case study on the Orontes River Basin.
