AISI H13 hot work tool steel is widely used for hot forging, hot-extrusion and die-casting because of its high temperature strength, impact toughness, heat checking resistance and wear resistance, etc. The thermally induced surface damage, i. e., thermal fatigne,is believed to be controlled by the magnitude of the imposed cyclic strain. The thermal fatigue on the surface of hot working die, which is responsible to the initiation of the cracks, is reported to result in more than 80 % of the failure of dies. 展开更多

With the Uddeholm self restricted method, the effect of compound layer of plasma nitriding on thermal fatigue behavior of 4Cr5MoSiV1 steel was studied by the way of adding Ar during plasma nitriding to remove the compound layer. The results show that the compound layer of plasma nitriding can delay the nucleation of heat cracks and hold back the propagation of heat cracks from surface to substrate because of its high hardness and strength. On the other land, the heat checking expands faster with the compound layer on the surface than that without it. After 3000 cycles of thermal fatigue test, both heat cracks with the compound layer are wider than the another without compound layer and the number of heat cracks of the former is more from the view of cross section. 展开更多

The thermal fatigue cracking behavior of high Si-Mo nodular cast iron (NCI) is investigated by means of optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS), in order to find a new material used in exhaust manifolds in First Automotive Works (FAW) .Nodular cast irons with silicon content about 4.7% , in combination with up to 1.1% molybdenum , were produced by Jilin University and FAW. The repeated heating / cooling test was performed under cyclic heating at various maximum heating temperatures (Tmax) ranging from 800to 900℃.Experimental results indicate that the thermal fatigue cracking resistance of high Si-Mo NCI decreases with increasing the maximum heating temperature. The periods for crack initiation are 24-36 , 40-50and 70-90times associated with heating temperature of 900 , 850and 800℃ , respectively , when the holding time is about 10min at Tmax. When thermal fatigue cracking occurs , the cracking always initiates at the bigger surface of specimen. The major positions of cracks propagation are generally at the eutectic oxide boundary region and the region of the graphite disappearance. At the same time , the oxidation may accelerate crack initiation and propagation. On the other hand , micro-crack number varied from large to little because of shielding effect. As exhaust manifolds , the reasonable working temperature of high Si-Mo NCI is no more than 840℃ by test and analysis. 展开更多

This paper studies a compound treatment. i. e. liquid S , N,C co-diffusing with rare earth (RE) and then oxidization , for hot-working die steels , and the effect of RE on thermal fatigue behavior of the diffused layer. XRD and SEM energy spectrum prove that trace RE element actually penetrates into the surface layer of steels. The result shows that RE can reduce the gradient of change of hardness in diffused layer, improve the morphology and distribution of compounds , and reduce the degree of surface alligator crack for thermal fatigue. The behavior of thermal fatigue of hot-working die steels is raised by 70% or so after the application of RE. The effect of RE is analysed according to the theory. 展开更多
