Ethylene glycol, glycerol, sorbitol, formamide, and urea were used as plasticizers for the preparation of thermoplastic starch(TPS) from corn starch. The properties of TPS were tested by analysis method. The results showed that TPSs were more highly plasticized with amines than alcohols. For the same type of plasticizer, the degree of plasticization decreased as the molecular weight of plasticizer increased. The relationship between plasticization degree and TPS properties was characterized and described by mechanical properties and water absorption. The experimental results showed that when the degree of plasticization increased, the tensile strength decreased and the elongation at breakage and water absorption increased. 展开更多

FT-IR expressed that ethylenebisformamide formed stronger and stable hydrogen bond with starch molecules compared to the native cornstarch. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the typical A-style crystallinity in the native starch has been destructed. By scanning electron microscope (SEM) native cornstarch granules were proved to transfer to a homogeneous system. After being stored for one week at RH=33%, the mechanical properties of EPTPS was also studied. The elongation reached to 264% utmost. As a novel plasticizer, ethylenebisformamide would be practical to extend TPS application scopes. 展开更多

The mechanical properties of composites prepared from wood flour and thermoplastic blends were investigated. Thermoplastic mixtures of polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene (PS), virgin or recycled, were mixed with wood flour in a high speed blender and then extruded by a specially designed twin/single screw extruder system to form wood-flour/thermoplastic-blends composites (WTBCs). Comparative studies were made to evaluate the effectiveness of the two modification methods of the thermoplastic blends, the one of the addition of maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS-g-MAH) as compatibilizer and the other of blend grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as initiator by reactive extrusion. The results showed that the impact properties of WTBCs using SEBS-g-MAH as compatilizer were better improved than that of the blend grafting. However, adverse results were observed on the tensile and flexural properties of the corresponding WTBCs. The mechanical properties of WTBCs prepared from recycled plastic blends were poorer to some extent than that from virgin plastic blends in general, especially in elongation break. The morphology of WTBCs breaking section was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results showed that a good interfacial adhesion between wood flour and polymer matrix was observed with both of the two modification methods. However, by blend grafting of adding DCP as initiator and MAH as monomer, a better interfacial bonding between wood and plastic matrix was obtained than that of the addition of SEBS-g-MAH. Blend grafting can be considered as a potential way of increasing the interfacial compatibility of different plastics and between plastic blends and wood. 展开更多

The comparison of the damage tolerance assessment for thermosetting and thermoplastic composites shows that thermoplastics are more damage tolerant under compression. Impacted thermoplastic composites have excellent compression-compression fatigue behavior. The damage growth life is only a few percent of their total fatigue life and no regular damage growth can be found. Some design principles for thermosetting composite structures may still be used. 展开更多

Polymers synthesized from renewable resources have gained immense popularity, in numerous applications ranging from films, bottles, food packaging, drug delivery, bags to agriculture mulch films. Various naturally occurring resources available for starch and PLA extraction and the associated polymer processing techniques are discussed. Alongside some basic concepts on blown film extrusion, the modifications needed for such specialized polymer processing techniques are also explored, giving a comprehensive outlook on bioplastics. Special process analysis, for its application as films are discussed. In the current scenario, as the world aspires for environmental and polymer sustainability, Bioplastic products are of high value. The review article would be beneficial to those embarked on designing bio-plastics products from renewable resources. 展开更多

In-situ consolidation forming of high-performance thermoplastic composites by Automated Fiber Placement(AFP)is of significant interest in aerospace.During the laying process,the heating temperature has a great influence on the quality of the formed components.A threedimensional heat transfer finite element model of Carbon Fiber(CF)/Polyether Ether Ketone(PEEK)heated by Slit Structure Nozzle Hot Gas Torch(SSNHGT)assisted AFP is proposed.The influence of gas flow rate,heat transfer distance,and laying speed on heating temperature is analysed.The results show that the overall temperature increases and then decreases as the gas flow rate increases.With the increase in heat transfer distance and laying speed,the overall temperature decreases.Meanwhile,the gas flow rate has the greatest influence on the temperature of CF/PEEK being heated,followed by the laying speed and finally the heat transfer distance.Furthermore,the model can also be extended to other fiber-reinforced polymer composites formed by hot gas torch assisted AFP,which can guide the optimization of process parameters for subsequent heating temperature control. 展开更多

Cellulose diacetate(CDA)can be melt processed to produce numerous and widely-used plastic products.However,due to the high glass transition temperature(Tg)of CDA,the addition of up to 30 wt%of micromolecular plasticizers is indispensable,which significantly reduces the dimensional stability and raises safety concerns from the migration of plasticizers.In this work,a series of CDA-graft poly(lactic acid)(CDA-g-PLA)copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of lactide onto the hydroxyI groups of CDA.The resultant CDA-g-PLA copolymers possess adjustable degrees of substitution(DSpua)and side chain length(DPpLa)by controlling the reaction time and feed ratio.The Tgs and thermal flow temperatures(Ts)of CDA-g-PLA strongly depend on DPpA such as the Tgs decrease linearly with the increase of DPA.The CDA-g-PLA copolymers with the DPLA of 3-9 can be directly processed to transparent plastics by melt processing without any external plasticizers,because of their low Tfs of 170-215℃.More impressively.the CDA-g PLA can act as the macromolecular plasticizer.The obtained CDA/CDA-g-PLA has higher storage modulus,flexural modulus and Young's modulus than the commercial CDA plasticized with triethyl citrate.In addition,the CDA/CDA-g PLA exhibits high dimensional stabilty and anti-migration property.During a long term treatment at 80℃ and 60%humidity,the CDA/CDA-g-PLA can retain the initial shape.Therefore,this work not only proposes a facile method for achieving a direct thermoplastic processing of CDA,but also provides a macromolecular plasticizer for CDA to make lightweight,stable and safer biobased thermoplastics. 展开更多

为了促进淀粉基复合材料中淀粉基质与预处理纤维表面更好的结合,解决热塑性淀粉的再结晶问题,分别采用甲酰胺、尿素、甘油、乙二醇按照10∶2、10∶2.5、10∶3、10∶3.5、10∶4的比例对天然玉米淀粉进行了塑化,同时研究了甲酰胺-尿素复... 为了促进淀粉基复合材料中淀粉基质与预处理纤维表面更好的结合,解决热塑性淀粉的再结晶问题,分别采用甲酰胺、尿素、甘油、乙二醇按照10∶2、10∶2.5、10∶3、10∶3.5、10∶4的比例对天然玉米淀粉进行了塑化,同时研究了甲酰胺-尿素复合塑化淀粉和甘油-乙二醇复合塑化淀粉。通过解读红外光谱图谱,塑化剂主要通过与淀粉分子中的羟基形成氢键对淀粉进行塑化,破坏淀粉的晶体结构,最佳塑化比为m(淀粉)∶m(塑化剂)=10∶3,其中甲酰胺与淀粉形成的氢键最强,塑化效果最好。X射线衍射曲线的研究表明,甲酰胺-尿素复合塑化淀粉的结晶度最低,小于1.5%,且复合塑化剂的最佳配比为m(甲酰胺)∶m(尿素)=2∶1。纤维-淀粉分子搭接模型的建立显示了热塑性淀粉与纤维间氢键结合的机理,塑化效果越好,淀粉塑化克服了纤维与淀粉的表面不相容的缺陷,淀粉基质均匀地覆盖在纤维表面。 展开更多
