Objective:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor(rbFGF)eye gel combined with tobramycin-dexamethasone(TOB-Dex)eye drops on dry eye syndrome(DES)after cataract surgery.M...Objective:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor(rbFGF)eye gel combined with tobramycin-dexamethasone(TOB-Dex)eye drops on dry eye syndrome(DES)after cataract surgery.Methods:86 patients with DES after cataract surgery,admitted from November 2021 to November 2023,were randomly divided into groups.The observation group included 43 patients treated with rbFGF eye gel combined with TOB-Dex eye drops.The reference group included 43 patients treated with TOB-Dex eye drops alone.Multiple indicators,including total effective rate and clinical symptom scores,were compared between the two groups.Results:The total effective rate in the observation group was higher than in the reference group(P<0.05).Before treatment,there were no differences in clinical symptom scores,serum factors,or disease severity scores between the two groups(P>0.05).Three weeks after treatment,the observation group had lower clinical symptom scores,serum factors,and disease severity scores compared to the reference group(P<0.05).The adverse reaction rate in the observation group was lower than in the reference group(P<0.05).Conclusion:rbFGF eye gel combined with TOB-Dex eye drops can improve the clinical efficacy for patients with DES after cataract surgery,alleviate disease symptoms,reduce inflammatory responses,and have fewer adverse reactions.展开更多

To convey this concept more appropriately, partial endocrine deficiency in the aging male (PEDAM) was introduced as a term for the phenomenon of hormonal alterations in the aging male. Hormones responsible for some of the manifestations associated with male aging are testosterone, growth hormone, dehydroepiansdrosterone (DHEA), melatonin, thyroid hormones and leptin. Of these, testosterone has been widely investigated and its beneficial and adverse effects on male bodily systems are relatively well established. However, a serious body of confusion and misunderstandings surrounding the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of men suspected of having androgen deficiency has been raised. Therefore, it is timely to provide practical criteria for diagnosis and treatment to avoid misconception about the use of testosterone in the aging male. Background: Supplementing farm animals diet with functional ingredients may improve the nutritional quality of meat products.Diet composition has been also demonstrated to influence the gene expression with effect on ...Background: Supplementing farm animals diet with functional ingredients may improve the nutritional quality of meat products.Diet composition has been also demonstrated to influence the gene expression with effect on biological processes and pathways.However,the knowledge on the effect of nutrients at the molecular level is scant.In particular,studies on the effects of antioxidants and polyphenols dietary supplementation have been investigated mainly in rodents,and only scarcely in farm animals so far.RNA-Seq with next-generation sequencing is increasingly the method of choice for studying changes in the transcriptome and it has been recently employed also in pig nutrigenomics studies to identify diet-induced changes in gene expression.The present study aimed to investigate the effect of diets enriched with functional ingredients(linseed,vitamin E and plant extracts) on the transcriptome of pig Longissimus thoracis to elucidate the role of these compounds in influencing genes involved in muscle physiology and metabolism compared to a standard diet.Results: Eight hundred ninety-three significant differentially expressed genes(DEGs)(FDR adjusted P-value ≤ 0.05)were detected by RNA-Seq analysis in the three diet comparisons(D2-D1,D3-D1,D4-D1).The functional analysis of DEGs showed that the diet enriched with n-3 PUFA from linseed(D2) mostly downregulated genes in pathways and biological processes(BPs) related to muscle development,contraction,and glycogen metabolism compared to the standard diet.The diet supplemented with linseed and vitamin E/Selenium(D3) showed to mostly downregulate genes linked to oxidative phosphorylation.Only few genes involved in extracellular matrix(ECM)organization were upregulated by the D3.Finally,the comparison D4-D1 showed that the diet supplemented with linseed and plant extracts(D4) upregulated the majority of genes compared to D1 that were involved in a complex network of pathways and BPs all connected by hub genes.In particular,IGF2 was a hub gene connecting protein metabolism,ECM organization,immune system and lipid biosynthesis pathways.Conclusion: The supplementation of pig diet with n-3 PUFA from linseed,antioxidants and plant-derived polyphenols can influence the expression of a relevant number of genes in Longissimus thoracis muscle that are involved in a variety of biochemical pathways linked to muscle function and metabolism.展开更多
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of testosterone supplementation(TS)on body composition in patients with HIV and the side effects of TS.A comprehensive literature search strategy was used to retrieve re...This study was designed to evaluate the effects of testosterone supplementation(TS)on body composition in patients with HIV and the side effects of TS.A comprehensive literature search strategy was used to retrieve relevant randomized controlled trials(RCTs)examining the effects of TS on body composition.A total of 14 eligible studies were included,enrolling 388 and 349 randomized patients in TS and control groups,respectively.The quality of studies included was assessed,and data on total body weight(BW),lean body mass(LBM),fat mass(FM),serum total testosterone(TT),free testosterone(FT)levels,and adverse events were extracted and analyzed using Review Manager software 5.3.Meta-analysis results showed that TS was associated with a small but significant modification in total BW,serum TT,and FT levels in HIV-infected patients and in patients given various drug administrations.TS also significantly increased LBM in male patients,but no significant difference in LBM was observed between female counterparts treated with TS or not.Conversely,TS relative to placebo did not lead to a significant reduction in FM.No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of adverse effects.Our findings suggested that TS may be recommended to improve body composition in patients with HIV-related weight loss.However,owing to the high heterogeneity across included trials,further evaluations using large-scale,multi-center,blinded RCTs are needed.展开更多

Blood samples collected from the adults and their offspring (kits) at 4 wk post-partum were assayed for total thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), reverse T3 (rT3), and T4-binding indices. As expected T4 concentrations of the adult and kit mink varied inversely with the level of supplemental iodine. In addition, T3 and rT3 concentrations decreased gradually in kits from the long-term experiment in response to the increased dietary iodine of the dams. T3 concentrations of kits from dams fed iodine short-term decreased markedly while rTy concentrations were elevated greatly in response to increased dietary iodine of the dam. These decreases in hormone levels are due to serum iodine blocking the thyroid uptake of iodine and subsequent decrease of hormone synthesis. Excess iodine may also block the effect of thyroid stimulating hormone. The T4-binding indices of the adults, in general, were depressed, while the T4-binding indices of the kits were more variable. These effects are probably due to fluctuations in thyroglobulin.展开更多

This association suggests a link between them and between their treatments. Our purpose for this study is to determine the prevalence of dry eye in our glaucoma patients treated with eye drops and deduce the factors associated with it. Patients and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, analytical study from October 2022 to September 2023 in the ophthalmology department of Garoua Regional Hospital in glaucoma patients aged over 15 years able to answer the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaires and treated with antiglaucoma eye drops for more than 3 months. These patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination and a tear film break-up time test. Results: A total of 73 patients (146 eyes) were examined. The average age of the patients was 47.2 ± 16.5 years, with a male predominance of 54.8%. The prevalence of dry eye syndrome in our patients according to the OSDI score was 56.2% (95% CI) (44.8;67.6). The prevalence of dry eye syndrome on clinical examination of the BUT in the right eye was 83.7% (95% CI) (75.1;92.1) and 79.4% (70.2;88.7) in the left eye. The duration of antiglaucoma treatment was the factor associated with dry eye syndrome (p < 0.05) in glaucoma patients in our setting. Conclusion: Dry Eye Syndrome is common in glaucoma patients on drops in our setting. Treatment duration of more than 1 year seems to be associated with dry eyes.展开更多

Methods: This study selected 76 patients with cognitive dysfunction after ischemic stroke who were hospitalized at Zhuji People’s Hospital from January 2023 to January 2024. The patients were divided into two groups. The control group was treated with butylphthalide capsules, while the combination group received Ginkgo biloba extract dropping pills in addition to the treatment given to the control group. The neurological function, cognitive function, activities of daily living, and levels of serum cytokines CRP, IL-6, and Hcy were compared between the two groups after 1 month and 3 months of treatment. Current treatments often involve synthetic drugs with significant side effects and potential for dependency. This study investigates the effects of a natural supplement combination of Ginkgo Biloba and Acai Extract on cognitive symptoms in a 77-year-old male with PD. The participant underwent a three-month supplementation regimen, with cognitive function assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test before and after the intervention. The results indicated an improvement in cognitive scores, suggesting that the combination of Ginkgo Biloba and Acai Extract may offer a promising alternative or adjunct to conventional PD treatments. This study highlights the potential of natural supplements in managing PD symptoms and calls for further research with larger sample sizes to confirm these findings. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of relative humidity(RH) at either acute or chronic moderate ambient temperature(Ta) on growth performance and droppings' corticosterone metabolites of broilers.Tw...The present study aimed to investigate the effect of relative humidity(RH) at either acute or chronic moderate ambient temperature(Ta) on growth performance and droppings' corticosterone metabolites of broilers.Two experiments were conducted: effect of RH(35,60 or 85%) on average daily feed intake(ADFI) and droppings' corticosterone metabolites at acute(1 d: 20–26 or 31–20°C,26 or 31°C for 6 h d–1 at 10:00–16:00) moderate Ta(experiment 1) and effect of RH(35,60 or 85%) on growth performance and droppings' corticosterone metabolites at chronic(step-wisely increasing temperature by 3°C every 3 d from 20 to 32°C within 15 d: 20–23–26–29–32°C) moderate Ta(experiment 2).Droppings were collected at the 2,4,6,8,and 22 h after Ta-RH controlled in experiment 1 and at the 2,4,6,and 22 h after Ta controlled to 32°C in experiment 2.The results showed that: 1) In experiment 1,85% RH increased(P<0.05) the droppings' corticosterone metabolites at the 2,6,8,and 22 h and 35% RH increased(P<0.05) it at the 2 and 22 h compared to the 60% RH.Moreover,85% RH further increased(P<0.05) it compared to the 35% RH,however,no difference(P>0.05) was found in ADFI among the three RH groups at acute moderate 26°C; 35 and 85% RH increased(P<0.05) droppings' corticosterone metabolites at the 2,6,8 and 22 h and decreased(P<0.05) ADFI compared to the 60% RH,moreover,85% RH further increased(P<0.05) droppings' corticosterone metabolites and further decreased(P<0.05) ADFI compared to the 35% RH at acute moderate 31°C; and the average of droppings' corticosterone metabolites in the whole period had a negative correlation(P<0.02) with the ADFI.2) In experiment 2,85% RH increased(P<0.01) droppings' corticosterone metabolites only at the 2 h and decreased(P<0.02) ADFI and average daily gain(ADG) compared to the 60% RH,no difference(P>0.05) in droppings' corticosterone metabolites was found between the 35 and 60% RH,however,35% RH decreased(P<0.01) ADG compared to the 60% RH,and the average of droppings' corticosterone metabolites in the whole period also had a negative correlation(P<0.02) with ADFI and ADG.In conclusion,droppings' corticosterone metabolites could be used as a RH stress index and low and high RH,especially high RH,reduced growth performance possibly through inducing RH stress at moderate temperature.展开更多

The rats had free access to high fat diet and water for 9 weeks. No significant difference was found in body weight (BW), total abdominal fat, food intake and food utilization rate between OVX control group and 20VX groups. However, the fasting blood glucose and blood lipid levels were significantly higher in 20VX groups than in OVX control group (P〈0.05). Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IGTI") showed that the area under AUC was smaller in 20VX groups than in OVX control group (P〈0.05). These findings showed that soy isoflavone crude extract supplementation can improve glucose tolerance and prevent high fat diet-induced insulin resistance in ovariectomized rats.展开更多

In this study, we analyzed differences in child drop-off and pick-up by employment type and gender, utilizing the “Metropolitan Area Person Trip Survey,” which is a statistical data set. The study targeted households in which both spouses were between 30 and 49 years old, had children under the age of 6, and included the following three groups. 1) Dual-income Group 1 (both spouses employed/on contract/temporary);2) Dual-income Group 2 (husband employed/on contract/temporary, wife part-time);3) Full-time housewife group (husband employed, wife unemployed). The analysis revealed that a) wives are almost always responsible for dropping off and picking up their children;b) husbands drop off and pick up their children less frequently in dual-income households;and c) households with children raising within 10 to 30 km of Tokyo Station have longer commuting times and need to reduce the burden of dropping off and picking up their children.展开更多
Objective:To identify the anti-inflammatory activity through two murine models and in the median Lethal Dose(LD_(50)) of three dietary supplements that contain Moussonia deppeana.Methods:The anti-inflammatory activity...Objective:To identify the anti-inflammatory activity through two murine models and in the median Lethal Dose(LD_(50)) of three dietary supplements that contain Moussonia deppeana.Methods:The anti-inflammatory activity of three dietary supplements(Cicatrisan/Gastricus^(R),Gastinol^(R),and Gastrovita^(R)) EtOH extracts was evaluated by TPA and by carrageenan murine models;also,median Lethal Dose(LD_(50)) was determined.Verbascoside was quantified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography.β-sitosterol,stigmasterol and the mixture of ursolic and oleanolic acids were identified in all supplements by TLC;however,none of these dietary supplements contain verbascoside.Results:For the TPA model,Cicatrisan/Gastricus^(R)generated a notable effect with 38.24%inhibition.While in the carrageenan model,it also exhibited noteworthy anti-inflammatory activity of ear edema with 66.39%of paw edema inhibition at 150 mg/kg,followed by Gastinol^(R) and Gastrovita^(R) with 50%at 300 mg/kg.Finally,LD_(50) was >2 g/kg for all supplements,when was administered intragastrically and Body Weight(BW) gain in mice was not altered after 14 days.Conclusions:Of the three food supplements containing M.deppeana,only the EtOH extract from the Cicatrisan/Gastricus^(R)formulation(tablets) showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in both experimental models and the LD_(50) was > 2 g/kg.展开更多

METHODS: A total of 400 patients were randomized into 2 groups; Group A(200 patients) received 5 mg SCTA at the end of surgery and topical ketorolac tromethamine(0.5%) with ofloxacin(0.3%) combination for 3 wk. Group B(200 patients) received tapering topical loteprednol etabonate(0.5%) along with ofloxacin(0.3%) and ketorolac tromethamine(0.5%) for 3 wk. Outcomes evaluated were intraocular pressure(IOP), anterior chamber cells/flare and macular oedema postoperatively at 1, 6 and 12 wk.RESULTS: Baseline parameters were almost similar in both the groups. No statistical difference was seen between the preoperative and postoperative IOP values for Group A(P=0.82) and Group B(P=0.61) and postoperative IOP values in between both groups(P=0.14) at 1 wk. Incidence of cells/flare postoperative was statistically not significant(P=0.82) in both groups at all follow up visits. Postoperative macular oedema was not observed at any follow up visit. CONCLUSION: SCTA appears to be an effective alternative to prolong postoperative topical steroid use.展开更多

There are numerous bioactive components, both nutritive and non-nutritive, in dietary supplements with considerable efficacy in promoting health. However, there are many ways disallowed ingredients may enter the supplement pipeline with potentially toxic effects. Dietary supplements can be regulated (either pre- or post-market) as a drug, dietary supplement, a nutraceutical, new dietary ingredient (NDI), generally recognized as safe (GRAS) food ingredient, a food additive, or a food. A pharmaceutical drug (medication) is used to treat, cure, prevent, or diagnose a disease and is regulated by the FDA pre-market only and allowed by medical prescription, whereas the other labeling designations are largely regulated post-market. One such molecule with a labeling problem is tianeptine, which has global use as an efficacious, prescribed drug, while at the same time being considered a non-drug and potentially dangerous adulterant often referred to as gas station heroin. In this paper, we critically evaluate the use and labeling of this compound and attempt to clarify the conundrum surrounding its legal or illegal use. Tianeptine is effective and efficacious as an antidepressant in those responding poorly to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and exhibits many medicinal characteristics of tricyclic antidepressants with fewer opioid-like side effects. As a result, sixty-six countries permit use of tianeptine as a prescription drug. At higher doses, tianeptine has recently been shown to exhibit significant potential for abuse and dependency along with toxicity. As such, the US does not recognize tianeptine as an FDA-approved drug or as a dietary supplement, nutraceutical, new dietary ingredient (NDI), GRAS ingredient, or a food. Instead, tianeptine is a synthetic adulterant of a dietary supplement and considered technically an unapproved food additive. In conclusion, tianeptine, although viewed as a safe dietary supplement by many, is illegal in the US despite benefits to many but toxicity to others that make it vital that consumers and healthcare providers learn to critically evaluate and navigate the often confusing nomenclature of a purported dietary supplement to convey to the public whether it is efficacious, safe, and legal.展开更多

Six different gate design schemes were compared and studied, and the weld lines positions and injection molding results under each gate scheme were analyzed.</span><span style="font-family:""></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Through the simulation analysis of the falling process of the mobile phone panel by the display dynamics analysis software ANSYS Workbench LS-DYNA, five analysis schemes were set according to the falling angle, and the stress distribution at the weld lines positions of the mobile phone panel in each scheme was studied. The reasonable gate scheme was given by synthesizing the force condition, the mold flow analysis and the drop simulation results of the mobile phone panel in use. Based on the results of die flow analysis and drop simulation the optimal gate design scheme 2 is found, and the weld line position avoids the lower part of the elliptical hole, which is the weak part of the structure. The research results had certain reference significance for the optimization of injection process of plastic products.展开更多
The structure of the flow and the acoustic signals generated by the impact of a freely falling drop of water with an underlying quiescent fluid have been investigated for droplets having diameter 0.5 cm and a contact ...The structure of the flow and the acoustic signals generated by the impact of a freely falling drop of water with an underlying quiescent fluid have been investigated for droplets having diameter 0.5 cm and a contact velocity in the range 1.5<U<5 m/s.The experimental study has been supported by high-resolution videos of the flow(as seen from above and from the side).The evolution of ejecta,spikes,droplets spray,cavity,splash,secondary cavity,streamer,secondary droplets and sequence of capillary waves is reported accordingly.In particular,perturbations of the smoothed free surface with transverse dimensions from 0.03 cm to 0.15 cm have been observed in the center of the cavity and at the head of a growing splash.The total duration of the fine structure’s existence has been found to range from 30 to 50 ms.Related acoustic packets have been recorded by means of a measuring hydrophone and a sensitive microphone.Registered acoustic signals have revealed a high-frequency pulse associated with the primary contact and a delayed main lower-frequency packet(with a time shift ranging between 50 ms and 210 ms).The content of the acoustic signals indicates that from a large number of observed gas bubbles,only one was actually sounding.For such a case(the formation of the bubble resulting from the break of a thin air bridge),the shock generated by the fast-moving remnant of the bridge produces volumetric oscillations of the bubble.The sound stops as soon as the bubble takes a smooth elliptical or spherical shape.Several details are reported about the relationship between the generation of capillary and acoustic waves and the features of hydrodynamic flows relating to the cavity,or the formation of a splash and the flows caused by the interaction of secondary drops with the perturbed surface of the target fluid.The formation of fine flows components is associated with the release of available potential energy and the conservation of perturbations in a thin“double layer”located in proximity to the original contact surfaces.展开更多

An extreme protocol including one month of intense exercise(HIIT(high intensity interval training))and exclusive supplement consumption,i.e.no food,was undertaken by one participant,in order to understand the effects ...An extreme protocol including one month of intense exercise(HIIT(high intensity interval training))and exclusive supplement consumption,i.e.no food,was undertaken by one participant,in order to understand the effects of one month of exercise without eating any food.The purpose was to acquire some initial data for future studies so that better exercise programs may be designed for both time-restricting athletic programs,and individuals who wish to combine fast fat-reduction and the improvement of their physical form.There was a parallel methodological goal to examine changes synthetically and not analytically,that is,to compensate for a gap in literature in regard to the absence of synthetic models.Changes in the participant(male,34 y.o.,72 kg,BMI:22.9)included a 21.20%relative reduction in body fat(3.9%in absolute values),a 2.6%reduction in body weight coupled with a 1.8%increase in fat-less mass,a 10%increase in maximum leg extension and a 6%increase in maximum chest press.Blood creatinine(+56%)and blood urea(+35%),as well as SGOT(serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase)(+45%),SGPT(Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase)(+75%)and Lymphocytes(+45%)were markedly increased.HIIT and exclusive supplement consumption,intermittent fasting and hypocaloric diet for one month drastically affected the individual in this case study by drastically improving his physical form,at the cost of worsening important biochemical markers.展开更多
文摘Objective:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor(rbFGF)eye gel combined with tobramycin-dexamethasone(TOB-Dex)eye drops on dry eye syndrome(DES)after cataract surgery.Methods:86 patients with DES after cataract surgery,admitted from November 2021 to November 2023,were randomly divided into groups.The observation group included 43 patients treated with rbFGF eye gel combined with TOB-Dex eye drops.The reference group included 43 patients treated with TOB-Dex eye drops alone.Multiple indicators,including total effective rate and clinical symptom scores,were compared between the two groups.Results:The total effective rate in the observation group was higher than in the reference group(P<0.05).Before treatment,there were no differences in clinical symptom scores,serum factors,or disease severity scores between the two groups(P>0.05).Three weeks after treatment,the observation group had lower clinical symptom scores,serum factors,and disease severity scores compared to the reference group(P<0.05).The adverse reaction rate in the observation group was lower than in the reference group(P<0.05).Conclusion:rbFGF eye gel combined with TOB-Dex eye drops can improve the clinical efficacy for patients with DES after cataract surgery,alleviate disease symptoms,reduce inflammatory responses,and have fewer adverse reactions.
文摘<abstract>Profound and diffuse alterations in the production of gonadal and adrenal androgens as well as growth hormone are associated with aging. To convey this concept more appropriately, partial endocrine deficiency in the aging male (PEDAM) was introduced as a term for the phenomenon of hormonal alterations in the aging male. Hormones responsible for some of the manifestations associated with male aging are testosterone, growth hormone, dehydroepiansdrosterone (DHEA), melatonin, thyroid hormones and leptin. Of these, testosterone has been widely investigated and its beneficial and adverse effects on male bodily systems are relatively well established. However, a serious body of confusion and misunderstandings surrounding the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of men suspected of having androgen deficiency has been raised. Therefore, it is timely to provide practical criteria for diagnosis and treatment to avoid misconception about the use of testosterone in the aging male. To provide an understanding and information of the issues, the following headings are summarized: (1) Important clinical consideration on testosterone supplementation in the aging male; (2) Asian practical recommendations on testosterone supplementation in the aging male.

文摘Background: Supplementing farm animals diet with functional ingredients may improve the nutritional quality of meat products.Diet composition has been also demonstrated to influence the gene expression with effect on biological processes and pathways.However,the knowledge on the effect of nutrients at the molecular level is scant.In particular,studies on the effects of antioxidants and polyphenols dietary supplementation have been investigated mainly in rodents,and only scarcely in farm animals so far.RNA-Seq with next-generation sequencing is increasingly the method of choice for studying changes in the transcriptome and it has been recently employed also in pig nutrigenomics studies to identify diet-induced changes in gene expression.The present study aimed to investigate the effect of diets enriched with functional ingredients(linseed,vitamin E and plant extracts) on the transcriptome of pig Longissimus thoracis to elucidate the role of these compounds in influencing genes involved in muscle physiology and metabolism compared to a standard diet.Results: Eight hundred ninety-three significant differentially expressed genes(DEGs)(FDR adjusted P-value ≤ 0.05)were detected by RNA-Seq analysis in the three diet comparisons(D2-D1,D3-D1,D4-D1).The functional analysis of DEGs showed that the diet enriched with n-3 PUFA from linseed(D2) mostly downregulated genes in pathways and biological processes(BPs) related to muscle development,contraction,and glycogen metabolism compared to the standard diet.The diet supplemented with linseed and vitamin E/Selenium(D3) showed to mostly downregulate genes linked to oxidative phosphorylation.Only few genes involved in extracellular matrix(ECM)organization were upregulated by the D3.Finally,the comparison D4-D1 showed that the diet supplemented with linseed and plant extracts(D4) upregulated the majority of genes compared to D1 that were involved in a complex network of pathways and BPs all connected by hub genes.In particular,IGF2 was a hub gene connecting protein metabolism,ECM organization,immune system and lipid biosynthesis pathways.Conclusion: The supplementation of pig diet with n-3 PUFA from linseed,antioxidants and plant-derived polyphenols can influence the expression of a relevant number of genes in Longissimus thoracis muscle that are involved in a variety of biochemical pathways linked to muscle function and metabolism.
文摘This study was designed to evaluate the effects of testosterone supplementation(TS)on body composition in patients with HIV and the side effects of TS.A comprehensive literature search strategy was used to retrieve relevant randomized controlled trials(RCTs)examining the effects of TS on body composition.A total of 14 eligible studies were included,enrolling 388 and 349 randomized patients in TS and control groups,respectively.The quality of studies included was assessed,and data on total body weight(BW),lean body mass(LBM),fat mass(FM),serum total testosterone(TT),free testosterone(FT)levels,and adverse events were extracted and analyzed using Review Manager software 5.3.Meta-analysis results showed that TS was associated with a small but significant modification in total BW,serum TT,and FT levels in HIV-infected patients and in patients given various drug administrations.TS also significantly increased LBM in male patients,but no significant difference in LBM was observed between female counterparts treated with TS or not.Conversely,TS relative to placebo did not lead to a significant reduction in FM.No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of adverse effects.Our findings suggested that TS may be recommended to improve body composition in patients with HIV-related weight loss.However,owing to the high heterogeneity across included trials,further evaluations using large-scale,multi-center,blinded RCTs are needed.

文摘We fed adult mink diets containing supplemental iodine, from 0 to 320 ppm, for one or seven months prior to breeding. Blood samples collected from the adults and their offspring (kits) at 4 wk post-partum were assayed for total thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), reverse T3 (rT3), and T4-binding indices. As expected T4 concentrations of the adult and kit mink varied inversely with the level of supplemental iodine. In addition, T3 and rT3 concentrations decreased gradually in kits from the long-term experiment in response to the increased dietary iodine of the dams. T3 concentrations of kits from dams fed iodine short-term decreased markedly while rTy concentrations were elevated greatly in response to increased dietary iodine of the dam. These decreases in hormone levels are due to serum iodine blocking the thyroid uptake of iodine and subsequent decrease of hormone synthesis. Excess iodine may also block the effect of thyroid stimulating hormone. The T4-binding indices of the adults, in general, were depressed, while the T4-binding indices of the kits were more variable. These effects are probably due to fluctuations in thyroglobulin.
文摘Background: Dry eye and glaucoma are two common pathologies in the elderly, and are very often associated. This association suggests a link between them and between their treatments. Our purpose for this study is to determine the prevalence of dry eye in our glaucoma patients treated with eye drops and deduce the factors associated with it. Patients and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, analytical study from October 2022 to September 2023 in the ophthalmology department of Garoua Regional Hospital in glaucoma patients aged over 15 years able to answer the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaires and treated with antiglaucoma eye drops for more than 3 months. These patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination and a tear film break-up time test. Results: A total of 73 patients (146 eyes) were examined. The average age of the patients was 47.2 ± 16.5 years, with a male predominance of 54.8%. The prevalence of dry eye syndrome in our patients according to the OSDI score was 56.2% (95% CI) (44.8;67.6). The prevalence of dry eye syndrome on clinical examination of the BUT in the right eye was 83.7% (95% CI) (75.1;92.1) and 79.4% (70.2;88.7) in the left eye. The duration of antiglaucoma treatment was the factor associated with dry eye syndrome (p < 0.05) in glaucoma patients in our setting. Conclusion: Dry Eye Syndrome is common in glaucoma patients on drops in our setting. Treatment duration of more than 1 year seems to be associated with dry eyes.
文摘Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effect of Ginkgo biloba extract dropping pills combined with butylphthalide capsules on cognitive dysfunction in patients after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and its impact on serum cytokines CRP, IL-6, and Hcy. Methods: This study selected 76 patients with cognitive dysfunction after ischemic stroke who were hospitalized at Zhuji People’s Hospital from January 2023 to January 2024. The patients were divided into two groups. The control group was treated with butylphthalide capsules, while the combination group received Ginkgo biloba extract dropping pills in addition to the treatment given to the control group. The neurological function, cognitive function, activities of daily living, and levels of serum cytokines CRP, IL-6, and Hcy were compared between the two groups after 1 month and 3 months of treatment. Results: The NIHSS scores, MMSE scores, ADL scores, and levels of CRP, IL-6, and Hcy in both groups showed statistically significant differences compared to before treatment (P Conclusion: The combination of Ginkgo biloba extract dropping pills and butylphthalide capsules has a better therapeutic effect on cognitive dysfunction in patients after ischemic stroke. It can improve the neurological function and cognitive function of patients, enhance their ability to perform daily activities, and reduce inflammatory responses.
文摘Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, including cognitive impairment. Current treatments often involve synthetic drugs with significant side effects and potential for dependency. This study investigates the effects of a natural supplement combination of Ginkgo Biloba and Acai Extract on cognitive symptoms in a 77-year-old male with PD. The participant underwent a three-month supplementation regimen, with cognitive function assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test before and after the intervention. The results indicated an improvement in cognitive scores, suggesting that the combination of Ginkgo Biloba and Acai Extract may offer a promising alternative or adjunct to conventional PD treatments. This study highlights the potential of natural supplements in managing PD symptoms and calls for further research with larger sample sizes to confirm these findings. Human data was performed in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki by the Roxbury District IRB Board (IRB Number: IRB00011767).

文摘The present study aimed to investigate the effect of relative humidity(RH) at either acute or chronic moderate ambient temperature(Ta) on growth performance and droppings' corticosterone metabolites of broilers.Two experiments were conducted: effect of RH(35,60 or 85%) on average daily feed intake(ADFI) and droppings' corticosterone metabolites at acute(1 d: 20–26 or 31–20°C,26 or 31°C for 6 h d–1 at 10:00–16:00) moderate Ta(experiment 1) and effect of RH(35,60 or 85%) on growth performance and droppings' corticosterone metabolites at chronic(step-wisely increasing temperature by 3°C every 3 d from 20 to 32°C within 15 d: 20–23–26–29–32°C) moderate Ta(experiment 2).Droppings were collected at the 2,4,6,8,and 22 h after Ta-RH controlled in experiment 1 and at the 2,4,6,and 22 h after Ta controlled to 32°C in experiment 2.The results showed that: 1) In experiment 1,85% RH increased(P<0.05) the droppings' corticosterone metabolites at the 2,6,8,and 22 h and 35% RH increased(P<0.05) it at the 2 and 22 h compared to the 60% RH.Moreover,85% RH further increased(P<0.05) it compared to the 35% RH,however,no difference(P>0.05) was found in ADFI among the three RH groups at acute moderate 26°C; 35 and 85% RH increased(P<0.05) droppings' corticosterone metabolites at the 2,6,8 and 22 h and decreased(P<0.05) ADFI compared to the 60% RH,moreover,85% RH further increased(P<0.05) droppings' corticosterone metabolites and further decreased(P<0.05) ADFI compared to the 35% RH at acute moderate 31°C; and the average of droppings' corticosterone metabolites in the whole period had a negative correlation(P<0.02) with the ADFI.2) In experiment 2,85% RH increased(P<0.01) droppings' corticosterone metabolites only at the 2 h and decreased(P<0.02) ADFI and average daily gain(ADG) compared to the 60% RH,no difference(P>0.05) in droppings' corticosterone metabolites was found between the 35 and 60% RH,however,35% RH decreased(P<0.01) ADG compared to the 60% RH,and the average of droppings' corticosterone metabolites in the whole period also had a negative correlation(P<0.02) with ADFI and ADG.In conclusion,droppings' corticosterone metabolites could be used as a RH stress index and low and high RH,especially high RH,reduced growth performance possibly through inducing RH stress at moderate temperature.

文摘Female Wister rats aged 8 weeks were randomly divided into sham operation group, ovariectomized (OVX) control group, and 20VX groups fed with soy isoflavone crude extract supplementation. The rats had free access to high fat diet and water for 9 weeks. No significant difference was found in body weight (BW), total abdominal fat, food intake and food utilization rate between OVX control group and 20VX groups. However, the fasting blood glucose and blood lipid levels were significantly higher in 20VX groups than in OVX control group (P〈0.05). Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IGTI") showed that the area under AUC was smaller in 20VX groups than in OVX control group (P〈0.05). These findings showed that soy isoflavone crude extract supplementation can improve glucose tolerance and prevent high fat diet-induced insulin resistance in ovariectomized rats.

文摘The distribution of material resulting from the impact of a freely falling drop with a target liquid has been studied by photo and video registration methods.Different cases have been investigated by considering drops made of aqueous solutions(ink,salt,acid)and including fine solid particles(i.e.,suspensions).New features have been observed in terms of flow dynamics and thin components produced as a result of the impact(such as banded elements,ligaments,and vortices at the surface of the liquid).In particular,the characteristics of emerging netlike structures have been found to depend on the size of the suspension clusters.For the case of acetic acid,a different patterning behavior has been obtained:sequences of concentric arcs are produced in that case.However,linear scaling laws and the discrete nature of the distribution of the droplet material seem to be features common to all the cases considered.
文摘There is a need to reduce the burden of child drop-off and pick-up for child-rearing generations, but most studies on the actual situation in Japan are based on survey results. In this study, we analyzed differences in child drop-off and pick-up by employment type and gender, utilizing the “Metropolitan Area Person Trip Survey,” which is a statistical data set. The study targeted households in which both spouses were between 30 and 49 years old, had children under the age of 6, and included the following three groups. 1) Dual-income Group 1 (both spouses employed/on contract/temporary);2) Dual-income Group 2 (husband employed/on contract/temporary, wife part-time);3) Full-time housewife group (husband employed, wife unemployed). The analysis revealed that a) wives are almost always responsible for dropping off and picking up their children;b) husbands drop off and pick up their children less frequently in dual-income households;and c) households with children raising within 10 to 30 km of Tokyo Station have longer commuting times and need to reduce the burden of dropping off and picking up their children.

文摘Objective:To identify the anti-inflammatory activity through two murine models and in the median Lethal Dose(LD_(50)) of three dietary supplements that contain Moussonia deppeana.Methods:The anti-inflammatory activity of three dietary supplements(Cicatrisan/Gastricus^(R),Gastinol^(R),and Gastrovita^(R)) EtOH extracts was evaluated by TPA and by carrageenan murine models;also,median Lethal Dose(LD_(50)) was determined.Verbascoside was quantified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography.β-sitosterol,stigmasterol and the mixture of ursolic and oleanolic acids were identified in all supplements by TLC;however,none of these dietary supplements contain verbascoside.Results:For the TPA model,Cicatrisan/Gastricus^(R)generated a notable effect with 38.24%inhibition.While in the carrageenan model,it also exhibited noteworthy anti-inflammatory activity of ear edema with 66.39%of paw edema inhibition at 150 mg/kg,followed by Gastinol^(R) and Gastrovita^(R) with 50%at 300 mg/kg.Finally,LD_(50) was >2 g/kg for all supplements,when was administered intragastrically and Body Weight(BW) gain in mice was not altered after 14 days.Conclusions:Of the three food supplements containing M.deppeana,only the EtOH extract from the Cicatrisan/Gastricus^(R)formulation(tablets) showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in both experimental models and the LD_(50) was > 2 g/kg.
文摘AIM: To do a randomized prospective interventional study for comparing the effects of a single subconjunctival triamcinolone acetonide(SCTA) injection to tapering topical loteprednol in patients undergoing phacoemulsification surgery under topical anesthesia. METHODS: A total of 400 patients were randomized into 2 groups; Group A(200 patients) received 5 mg SCTA at the end of surgery and topical ketorolac tromethamine(0.5%) with ofloxacin(0.3%) combination for 3 wk. Group B(200 patients) received tapering topical loteprednol etabonate(0.5%) along with ofloxacin(0.3%) and ketorolac tromethamine(0.5%) for 3 wk. Outcomes evaluated were intraocular pressure(IOP), anterior chamber cells/flare and macular oedema postoperatively at 1, 6 and 12 wk.RESULTS: Baseline parameters were almost similar in both the groups. No statistical difference was seen between the preoperative and postoperative IOP values for Group A(P=0.82) and Group B(P=0.61) and postoperative IOP values in between both groups(P=0.14) at 1 wk. Incidence of cells/flare postoperative was statistically not significant(P=0.82) in both groups at all follow up visits. Postoperative macular oedema was not observed at any follow up visit. CONCLUSION: SCTA appears to be an effective alternative to prolong postoperative topical steroid use.
文摘Dietary supplement sales have surpassed $30 billion per year with their use becoming and remaining extremely popular amongst the general public. There are numerous bioactive components, both nutritive and non-nutritive, in dietary supplements with considerable efficacy in promoting health. However, there are many ways disallowed ingredients may enter the supplement pipeline with potentially toxic effects. Dietary supplements can be regulated (either pre- or post-market) as a drug, dietary supplement, a nutraceutical, new dietary ingredient (NDI), generally recognized as safe (GRAS) food ingredient, a food additive, or a food. A pharmaceutical drug (medication) is used to treat, cure, prevent, or diagnose a disease and is regulated by the FDA pre-market only and allowed by medical prescription, whereas the other labeling designations are largely regulated post-market. One such molecule with a labeling problem is tianeptine, which has global use as an efficacious, prescribed drug, while at the same time being considered a non-drug and potentially dangerous adulterant often referred to as gas station heroin. In this paper, we critically evaluate the use and labeling of this compound and attempt to clarify the conundrum surrounding its legal or illegal use. Tianeptine is effective and efficacious as an antidepressant in those responding poorly to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and exhibits many medicinal characteristics of tricyclic antidepressants with fewer opioid-like side effects. As a result, sixty-six countries permit use of tianeptine as a prescription drug. At higher doses, tianeptine has recently been shown to exhibit significant potential for abuse and dependency along with toxicity. As such, the US does not recognize tianeptine as an FDA-approved drug or as a dietary supplement, nutraceutical, new dietary ingredient (NDI), GRAS ingredient, or a food. Instead, tianeptine is a synthetic adulterant of a dietary supplement and considered technically an unapproved food additive. In conclusion, tianeptine, although viewed as a safe dietary supplement by many, is illegal in the US despite benefits to many but toxicity to others that make it vital that consumers and healthcare providers learn to critically evaluate and navigate the often confusing nomenclature of a purported dietary supplement to convey to the public whether it is efficacious, safe, and legal.
文摘Aiming at the gate design problem of a mobile phone panel, the plastic forming analysis software Moldflow and drop simulation were used to optimize the gate design. Six different gate design schemes were compared and studied, and the weld lines positions and injection molding results under each gate scheme were analyzed.</span><span style="font-family:""></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Through the simulation analysis of the falling process of the mobile phone panel by the display dynamics analysis software ANSYS Workbench LS-DYNA, five analysis schemes were set according to the falling angle, and the stress distribution at the weld lines positions of the mobile phone panel in each scheme was studied. The reasonable gate scheme was given by synthesizing the force condition, the mold flow analysis and the drop simulation results of the mobile phone panel in use. Based on the results of die flow analysis and drop simulation the optimal gate design scheme 2 is found, and the weld line position avoids the lower part of the elliptical hole, which is the weak part of the structure. The research results had certain reference significance for the optimization of injection process of plastic products.

文摘The structure of the flow and the acoustic signals generated by the impact of a freely falling drop of water with an underlying quiescent fluid have been investigated for droplets having diameter 0.5 cm and a contact velocity in the range 1.5<U<5 m/s.The experimental study has been supported by high-resolution videos of the flow(as seen from above and from the side).The evolution of ejecta,spikes,droplets spray,cavity,splash,secondary cavity,streamer,secondary droplets and sequence of capillary waves is reported accordingly.In particular,perturbations of the smoothed free surface with transverse dimensions from 0.03 cm to 0.15 cm have been observed in the center of the cavity and at the head of a growing splash.The total duration of the fine structure’s existence has been found to range from 30 to 50 ms.Related acoustic packets have been recorded by means of a measuring hydrophone and a sensitive microphone.Registered acoustic signals have revealed a high-frequency pulse associated with the primary contact and a delayed main lower-frequency packet(with a time shift ranging between 50 ms and 210 ms).The content of the acoustic signals indicates that from a large number of observed gas bubbles,only one was actually sounding.For such a case(the formation of the bubble resulting from the break of a thin air bridge),the shock generated by the fast-moving remnant of the bridge produces volumetric oscillations of the bubble.The sound stops as soon as the bubble takes a smooth elliptical or spherical shape.Several details are reported about the relationship between the generation of capillary and acoustic waves and the features of hydrodynamic flows relating to the cavity,or the formation of a splash and the flows caused by the interaction of secondary drops with the perturbed surface of the target fluid.The formation of fine flows components is associated with the release of available potential energy and the conservation of perturbations in a thin“double layer”located in proximity to the original contact surfaces.
文摘Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate(DHEAS)is a hormone produced by the zona reticularis of the adrenal gland and the ovaries.Initially considered as an inert compound merely serving as an intermediate in the conversion of cholesterol to androgens,interest in DHEA began to grow in the 1960s when it was found that DHEAS is the most abundant steroid hormone in human plasma and that its levels decline with age.In many countries,DHEA is considered a nutritional supplement.It has been used for a multitude of conditions which include sexual dysfunction,infertility,genitourinary syndrome of menopause,musculoskeletal disorders,cardiovascular diseases,ageing,neurological diseases,autoimmune conditions,adrenal insufficiency,and anorexia nervosa.We describe an overview of the historical evolution of DHEA,its physiology,and the disease states where it has been evaluated as a supplement.
文摘An extreme protocol including one month of intense exercise(HIIT(high intensity interval training))and exclusive supplement consumption,i.e.no food,was undertaken by one participant,in order to understand the effects of one month of exercise without eating any food.The purpose was to acquire some initial data for future studies so that better exercise programs may be designed for both time-restricting athletic programs,and individuals who wish to combine fast fat-reduction and the improvement of their physical form.There was a parallel methodological goal to examine changes synthetically and not analytically,that is,to compensate for a gap in literature in regard to the absence of synthetic models.Changes in the participant(male,34 y.o.,72 kg,BMI:22.9)included a 21.20%relative reduction in body fat(3.9%in absolute values),a 2.6%reduction in body weight coupled with a 1.8%increase in fat-less mass,a 10%increase in maximum leg extension and a 6%increase in maximum chest press.Blood creatinine(+56%)and blood urea(+35%),as well as SGOT(serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase)(+45%),SGPT(Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase)(+75%)and Lymphocytes(+45%)were markedly increased.HIIT and exclusive supplement consumption,intermittent fasting and hypocaloric diet for one month drastically affected the individual in this case study by drastically improving his physical form,at the cost of worsening important biochemical markers.
