Long-wavelength(>500 km)magnetic anomalies originating in the lithosphere were first found in satellite magnetic surveys.Compared to the striking magnetic anomalies around the world, the long-wavelength magnetic anomalies in China and surrounding regions are relatively weak.Specialized research on each of these anomalies has been quite inadequate;their geological origins remain unclear,in particular their connection to tectonic activity in the Chinese and surrounding regions. We focus on six magnetic high anomalies over the(1)Tarim Basin,(2)Sichuan Basin(3)Great Xing’an Range,(4)Barmer Basin,(5)Central Myanmar Basin,and(6)Sunda and Banda Arcs, and a striking magnetic low anomaly along the southern part of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau. We have analyzed their geological origins by reviewing related research and by detailed comparison with geological results. The tectonic backgrounds for these anomalies belong to two cases:either ancient basin basement,or subduction-collision zone. However, the geological origins of large-scale regional magnetic anomalies are always subject to dispute, mainly because of limited surface exposure of sources, later tectonic destruction, and superposition of multi-phase events. 展开更多

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(also referred to as the Plateau)has long received much attention from the community of geoscience due to its unique geographical location and rich mineral resources. This paper reviews the aeromagnetic surveys in the Plateau in the past 60 years and summarizes relevant research achievements, which mainly include the followings.(1)The boundaries between the Plateau and its surrounding regions have been clarified. In detail, its western boundary is restricted by West Kunlun-Altyn Tagh arc-shaped magnetic anomaly zone forming due to the arc-shaped connection of the Altyn Tagh and Kangxiwa faults and its eastern boundary consists of the boundaries among different magnetic fields along the Longnan(Wudu)-Kangding Fault.Meanwhile, the fault on the northern margin of the Northern Qilian Mountains serves as its northern boundary.(2)The Plateau is mainly composed of four orogens that were stitched together, namely East Kunlun-Qilian,Hoh-Xil-Songpan,Chamdo-Southwestern Sanjiang(Nujiang,Lancang, and Jinsha rivers in southeastern China),and Gangdese-Himalaya orogens.(3)The basement of the Plateau is dominated by weakly magnetic Proterozoic metamorphic rocks and lacks strongly magnetic Archean crystalline basement of stable continents such as the Tarim and Sichuan blocks. Therefore,it exhibits the characteristics of unstable orogenic basement.(4)The Yarlung-Zangbo suture zone forming due to continent-continent collisions since the Cenozoic shows double aeromagnetic anomaly zones. Therefore,it can be inferred that the Yarlung-Zangbo suture zone formed from the Indian Plate subducting towards and colliding with the Eurasian Plate twice.(5)A huge negative aeromagnetic anomaly in nearly SN trending has been discovered in the middle part of the Plateau, indicating a giant deep thermal-tectonic zone.(6)A dual-layer magnetic structure has been revealed in the Plateau. It consists of shallow magnetic anomaly zones in nearly EW and NW trending and deep magnetic anomaly zones in nearly SN trending. They overlap vertically and cross horizontally, showing the flyover-type geological structure of the Plateau.(7)A group of NW-trending faults occur in eastern Tibet, which is intersected rather than connected by the nearly EW trending that develop in middle-west Tibet.(8)As for the central uplift zone that occurs through the Qiangtang Basin, its metamorphic basement tends to gradually descend from west to east, showing the form of steps. The Qiangtang Basin is divided into the northern and southern part by the central uplift zone in it.The basement in the Qiangtang Basin is deep in the north and west and shallow in the south and west. The basement in the northern Qiangtang Basin is deep and relatively stable and thus is more favorable for the generation and preservation of oil and gas.Up to now,19 favorable tectonic regions of oil and gas have been determined in the Qiangtang Basin.(9)A total of 21 prospecting areas of mineral resources have been delineated and thousands of ore-bearing(or mineralization)anomalies have been discovered.Additionally, the formation and uplift mechanism of the Plateau are briefly discussed in this paper. 展开更多

Based on the multipoint magnetic observations of Cluster from 2001 to 2004,the magnetic field structure in magnetotail Neutral Sheet(NS) is statistically surveyed. The results are as follows. In NS,a cubic function is selected to reveal the relation between y(GSM) and positional parameter z.The relation between y and magnetic field values indicates that the magnetic field is weak at midnight region and strengthens gradually at the duskside and dawnside. The relation between y and curvature radius is expressed by a quadratic function. And R_c of flattened CS is less than that of the normal CS.B_y determines the orientation of MFLs' configuration. The polar angle of the curvature vector is affected by the NS configuration. In addition, the correlation between the polar angle of the curvature vector and z is higher. The polar angle of the normal of the osculating plane is uncertain in the center area. The relation between the azimuthal angles of the curvature vector(the normal of the osculating plane) and y is negatively correlated. An empirical model applied to yz plane of the three-dimensional structure of the magnetic field lines in the NS are developed, and it is represented as a function of the positional parameter y.Finally, the current density is also statistically surveyed. 展开更多

Termite mounds are conventionally surmised as one of the best bio-geological indicator for groundwater occurrence in places where they inhibit.Ground magnetic survey was carried out to prove the assumption about termite mounds as an important indicator for groundwater exploration.Occurrences of 18 Termite mounds were mapped using handheld GPS to identify the suitable trend for magnetic survey. After considering all the criteria such as power lines, fences and fracture system, termite mound 2,12 and 18 were selected in the NNE-SSW trend, and the ground magnetic survey was conducted in ESE-WNW direction which is perpendicular to the trend of the termite mounds using Proton Precession Magnetometer.Totally,99 samples were collected with 5 m sampling interval and 50 m profile interval over an area of 22500 sq.m.The magnetic values varied from–7363 nT to 898 nT with the mean of–331 nT.Processed map of reduction to Equator indicates the presence of NNE-SSW and WNW-ESE magnetic breaks.Analytical signal map designated the presence of magnetic low in the WNW-ESE direction which coincides spatially with the magnetic breaks. The magnetic profile lines have also brought to light the structurally weak zones.Causative body depth range was estimated using power spectrum and Euler method which are from 120 m to 40 m and<20 m to>100 m,respectively. The present study appreciably brings out the spatial relationship between the termite mounds and the hydro-fractures.This confirms the assertion with regard to termite mounds as an effective tool for groundwater exploration. 展开更多

The main objective of this research was to use ground magnetic survey to delineate shear zone and iron ore deposit within the Neoproterozoic rocks of Mutomo-Ikutha area of south eastern Kenya. Total field magnetic data was recorded by using high resolution proton precision geometric magnetometer which recorded total components of the ground magnetic anomaly data running through sixteen traverses. The field data was qualitatively and quantitatively interpreted and the results gave values for the total component measurements of ground magnetic anomaly that varied between a minimum negative peak value of about 250 nanoTesla and a maximum of about 1000 nanoTesla. 550 nanoTesla was considered to be threshold of the iron mineralization within the area. The results indicated that the western part of Mutomo-Ikutha was sheared, faulted and contained iron ore mineralization trending in the north-south direction. Areas with high anomalous values were geochemically proven to contain magnetite. 展开更多

A ground magnetic survey was carried out to investigate the presence of iron ore at a location (Lat. 7.99883°N to Lat. 7.99933°N, Long. 3.57900°E to Long. 3.57990°E) in Iseyin, Oyo State, South-wes... A ground magnetic survey was carried out to investigate the presence of iron ore at a location (Lat. 7.99883°N to Lat. 7.99933°N, Long. 3.57900°E to Long. 3.57990°E) in Iseyin, Oyo State, South-western Nigeria. Ten magnetic traverses each 100 m long at a separation of 5 m were run West-East. Magnetic intensity was taken at intervals of 10 m along each traverse line using the proton precession magnetometer (G-856 AX). The measured magnetic field data were corrected for drift and were presented as profiles. The profiles were interpreted by calculating the depth to the top of anomalies. The data obtained were used to construct magnetic anomaly maps in 2D and 3D. The magnetic survey results delineated this location into some high and low magnetic field intensity regions. The regions of high magnetic field anomaly indicated the presence of materials with high susceptibility which was suspected to be iron compounds. The quantitative and qualitative analyses on interpretations of field data collected were given, while these results provided values for the total component measurements of ground magnetic anomaly that widely ranged between a maximum positive peak result of 8 nT and to a minimum negative peak result of —6 nT. Using Peter’s half slope technique, depth to the basement was assessed, which actually provided a maximum depth to basement of 6.25 m. From the knowledge of the geology of the area and also, the magnetic survey employed information, therefore, we can finally conclude that, the study area is under laid by geologic structures which favour the accumulation of iron-ore minerals deposit at Oke-Aro area in Iseyin. 展开更多

The intersection of the Kyushu-Palau Ridge(KPR)and the Central Basin Rift(CBR)of the West Philippine Basin(WPB)is a relic of a trench-trench-rift(TTR)type triple-junction,which preserves some pivotal information on the cessation of the seafloor spreading of the WPB,the emplacement and disintegration of the proto-Izu-Bonin-Mariana(IBM)Arc,and the transition from initial rifting to steady-state spreading of the Parece Vela Basin(PVB).However, the structural characteristics of this triple-junction have not been thoroughly understood. In this paper, using the newly acquired multi-beam bathymetric, gravity, and magnetic data obtained by the Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology,China Geological Survey, the authors depict the topographic, gravity, and magnetic characteristics of the triple-junction and adjacent region.Calculations including the upward continuations and total horizontal derivatives of gravity anomaly are also performed to highlight the major structural features and discontinuities.Based on these works, the morphological and structural features and their formation mechanisms are analyzed. The results show that the last episode amagmatic extension along the CBR led to the formation of a deep rift valley, which extends eastward and incised the KPR.The morphological and structural fabrics of the KPR near and to the south of the triple-junction are consistent with those of the western PVB,manifesting as a series of NNE-SSW-and N-S-trending ridges and troughs, which were produced by the extensional faults associated with the initial rifting of the PVB.The superposition of the above two reasons induced the prominent discontinuity of the KPR in deep and shallow crustal structures between 15°N‒15°30′N and 13°30′N‒14°N.Combined with previous authors’results,we propose that the stress produced by the early spreading of the PVB transmitted westward and promoted the final stage amagmatic extension of the CBR.The eastward propagation of the CBR destroyed the KPR,of which the magmatism had decayed or ceased at that time. The destruction mechanism of the KPR associated with the rifting of the PVB varies along strike the KPR.Adjacent to the triple-junction,the KPR was destroyed mainly due to the oblique intersection of the PVB rifting center.Whereas south of the triple-junction,the KPR was destroyed by the E-W-directional extensional faulting on its whole width. 展开更多

New methods are presented for processing and interpretation of shallow marine differential magnetic data, including constructing maps of offshore total magnetic anomalies with an extremely high reso- lution of up to 1-2 nT, mapping weak anomalies of 5-10 nT caused by mineralization effects at the contacts of hydrocarbons with host rocks, estimating depths to upper and lower boundaries of anom- alous magnetic sources, and estimating thickness of magnetic layers and boundaries of tectonic blocks. Horizontal dimensions of tectonic blocks in the so-called "seismic gap" region in the central Kuril Arc vary from 10 to 100 km, with typical dimensions of 25-30 km. The area of the "seismic gap" is a zone of intense tectonic activity and recent volcanism. Deep sources causing magnetic anomalies in the area are similar to the "magnetic belt" near Hokkaido. In the southern and central parts of Barents Sea, tectonic blocks with widths of 30-100 kin, and upper and lower boundaries of magnetic layers ranging from depths of 10 to 5 km and 18 to 30 km are calculated. Models of the magnetic layer underlying the Mezen Basin in an inland part of the White Sea-Barents Sea paleorift indicate depths to the lower boundary of the layer of 12-30 km. Weak local magnetic anomalies of 2-5 nT in the northern and central Caspian Sea were identified using the new methods, and drilling confirms that the anomalies are related to concentrations of hydrocarbon. Two layers causing magnetic anomalies are identified in the northern Caspian Sea from magnetic anomaly spectra. The upper layer lies immediately beneath the sea bottom and the lower layer occurs at depths between 30-40 m and 150-200 m. 展开更多

This study aims at presenting a recent survey of this literature. It also aims at measuring magnetic field levels close to power transmission lines at inhabited areas in Kuwait to see if current levels are safe and to establish a database of 50 Hz magnetic field levels at inhabited areas. Measurements were made, according to the international standard procedures in winter, spring, summer and fall, and three times of a day. Four inhabited areas were surveyed. Results provide us with an independent view of the levels in the vicinity of power lines and houses. Results show that the highest level is measured in the summer, reaching 115 mG while the minimum level is measured in the fall. We found that some houses were at less than 50 meters distance from the edge of the transmission lines. Some houses were, as close as 22 meters to the line. We found that levels at the entrance of houses and at outdoor parking areas were mostly higher than 4 mG. 展开更多

The southern part of the Kyushu-Palau Ridge(KPR)is located at the conjunction of the West Philippine Basin, the Parece Vela Basin, the Palau Basin, and the Caroline Basin. This area has extremely complex structures and is critical for the research on the tectonic evolution of marginal seas in the Western Pacific Ocean. However, only few studies have been completed on the southern part, and the geophysical fields and deep structures in this part are not well understood.Given this, this study finely depicts the characteristics of the gravity and magnetic anomalies and extracts information on deep structures in the southern part of the KPR based on the gravity and magnetic data obtained from the 11th expedition of the deep-sea geological survey of the Western Pacific Ocean conducted by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey,China Geological Survey using the R/V Haiyangdizhi 6.Furthermore,with the data collected on the water depth, sediment thickness, and multichannel seismic transects as constraints,a 3D density model and Moho depths of the study area were obtained using 3D density inversion. The results are as follows.(1)The gravity and magnetic anomalies in the study area show distinct zoning and segmentation. In detail, the gravity and magnetic anomalies to the south of 11°N of the KPR transition from high-amplitude continuous linear positive anomalies into low-amplitude intermittent linear positive anomalies. In contrast, the gravity and magnetic anomalies to the north of 11°N of the KPR are discontinuous and show alternating positive and negative anomalies. These anomalies can be divided into four sections,of which the separation points correspond well to the locations of deep faults, thus, revealing different field-source attributes and tectonic genesis of the KPR.(2)The Moho depth in the basins in the study area is 6-12 km.The Moho depth in the southern part of KPR show segmentation.Specifically, the depth is 10‒12 km to the north of 11°N,12‒14 km from 9.5°N to 11°N,14-16 km from 8.5°N to 9.5°N,and 16‒25 km in the Palau Islands.(3)The KPR is a remnant intra-oceanic arc with the oceanic-crust basement.which shows noticeably discontinuous from north to south in geological structure and is intersected by NEE-trending lithospheric-scale deep faults. With large and deep faults F3 and F1(the Mindanao fault)as boundaries overall, the southern part of the KPR can be divided into three zones. In detail, the portion to the south of 8.5°N(F3)is a tectonically active zone, the KPR portion between 8.5°N and 11°N is a tectonically active transition zone, and the portion to the north of 11°N is a tectonically inactive zone.(4)The oceanic crust in the KPR is slightly thicker than that in the basins on both sides of the ridge, and it is inferred that the KPR formed from the thickening of the oceanic crust induced by the upwelling of deep magma in the process of rifting of remnant arcs during the Middle Oligocene. In addition,it is inferred that the thick oceanic crust under the Palau Islands is related to the constant upwelling of deep magma induced by the continuous northwestward subduction of the Caroline Plate toward the Palau Trench since the Late Oligocene. This study provides a scientific basis for systematically understanding the crustal attributes, deep structures, and evolution of the KPR. 展开更多

The geology of Magaoni area is associated with the presence of heavy minerals [1]. Magaoni’s neighbours Maumba and Nguluku where ilmenite was discovered by Tiomin Resource Inc. in 1996, using drilling and chemical analysis [2]. Ilmenite mineral is known to be magnetically weak, but provides observable magnetic response [3]. In this study, ground magnetic survey method was carried out to map magnetic anomalies of established stations, associated with ilmenite bearing formations. The magnetic contour map plotted showed weak and shallow magnetic signatures spread throughout the study area. 2D Euler deconvolution solutions revealed presence of magnetised formations from near surface to a maximum depth of about 450 m at some points. The weak magnetic formations of near surface indicated presence of ilmenite. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was done on soil samples collected randomly from the study area to determine the percentage of iron and titanium oxides. The results showed elevated values of titanium dioxide, ranging from 1.5% to 13% which is way above the global average of about 0.7% [4]. The percentage of iron oxide was low, ranging from 1.5% to 4%, this being the reason for weak magnetisation of the study area. 展开更多

The prospects for expanding the mineral resource base in many countries are linked with the exploration of stranded sites localized at unexplored areas with complex natural and landscape conditions that make any ground survey, including magnetic prospecting, difficult and expensive. The current level of geology requires high-precision and large-scale data at the first stages of geological exploration.Since 2012,technologies of aeromagnetic surveying with unmanned aircraft vehicles(UAV)enter the market, but most of them are based on big fixed-wing UAV and do not allow to substantially increase the level of survey granularity compared with traditional aerial methods. To increase the scale of survey,it is necessary to reduce the altitude and speed of flight, for which the authors develop the methodical and technical solutions described in this article. To obtain data at altitudes of 5 m above the terrain even in a rugged relief,we created heavy multirotor UAVs that are stable in flight and may be used in a wide range of environmental conditions(even a moderate snowfall),and develop a special software to generate flight missions on the basis of digital elevation models.A UAV has special design to reduce magnetic interference of the flight platform;the magnetic sensor is hung below the aircraft. This technology was conducted in a considerable amount of magnetic surveys in the mountainous regions of East Siberia between 2014 and 2016.The results of the comparison between airborne and ground surveys are presented, which show that the sensitivity of the developed system in conjunction with low-altitude measurements can cover any geologically significant anomalies of the magnetic field. An unmanned survey is cheaper and more productive;the multirotor-based technologies may largely replace traditional ground magnetic exploration in scales of 1:10,000−1:1000. 展开更多

Radiation is considered one of the possible causes of cancer disease with natural background sources including cosmic, terrestrial and internal radiation. A number of cancer disease cases have been reported in Kargi with their causes not properly documented. The present work characterized the radioactivity in soil and water, to find out possible causes of radiation in KARGI-KENYA by studying magnetic intensities, anomalous zones with depth to magnetic sources and delineating subsurface structures. A total of 117 soil and 14 water samples were collected from the entire area and analysed for radionuclides due to 40K, 232Th and 226Ra. Measurement methods of proton magnetometer and gamma spectrometry employing a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector were employed basically to evaluate the magnetic survey and radiological hazard of radioactivities respectively. A total of 51 magnetic field measurements were taken on the eastern part of Kargi, a place suspected to have more concentration of radionuclides. The results showed that there could have been a fractionation during weathering period or metasomatic activity of the radioelements involvement. This study also reveals that the mining activities in the nearby study area could have affected the geologic formation causing more fracturing in rocks and pronounced subsurface structures as a result of mining that could have served as passage for leachates from pollutants as well as the level of radiation in the study area. 展开更多

TM Field, located offshore Niger Delta in the Gulf of Guinea(Nigeria),has been evaluated for potential drilling hazards prior to the drilling of a proposed oil well. This is in a region where potential hazards that could inhibit successful drilling exercise have not been adequately studied. The study adopted the modern technique of offshore geohazard evaluation that relies mainly on suites of geophysical and shallow geological investigations which include ocean bathymetry using multi-beam echo sounder, sidescan sonar,sub-bottom profiler, magnetic, and 2D-high resolution seismic reflection surveys. The results were integrated to draw inferences about the risk potential of the field. From the bathymetric survey, water depths were found to range from 345 m to 650 m LAT,with seabed relief being 305 m.Water depth at the proposed well location was found to be approximately 450 m and the seabed was found to slope in the northwestern direction.Seafloor gradient was computed as 0.05 across the whole area. Two shallow sub-surface stratigraphic units, labelled A and B,were delineated.Unit A was directly beneath the seafloor and seemed to be composed mainly of clayey/silty sand. Its thickness ranged from 6 m to 70 m across the study area.Unit B appeared to be a layer of sand and its total thickness was not fully delineated.Observable kinks and displacements at the flanks of seabed undulations/depressions on subbottom profiler sections suggested that the depressions may be fault-controlled.On the map generated from the marine magnetic data,a magnetic fault was delineated and this appeared to be coincident with the shallower of the two buried faults on the cross-line seismic section cutting through the proposed well-head location.Interpreted seismic reflection data presented this fault as being inactive. Most of the faults mapped, especially the buried ones, appeared to be inactive except a few.Regions with mapped amplitude anomalies are to be avoided during rig-mobilization operations.Though engineering conditions are expected to vary vertically since layers occur as intercalation, significant lateral variation is not expected within uniform layers of bed.Risk of punch-through associated with clayey formation is expected to be low because the geologic layers are not uniformly and entirely clay. The proposed wellhead location was found to be free of potential hazard sources. 展开更多

Aeromagnetic interference could not be compensated effectively if the precision of parameters which are solved by the aircraft magnetic field model is low. In order to improve the compensation effect under this condition, a method based on small signal model and least mean square(LMS) algorithm is proposed. According to the method, the initial values of adaptive filter's weight vector are calculated with the solved model parameters through small signal model at first, then the small amount of direction cosine and its derivative are set as the input of the filter, and the small amount of the interference is set as the filter's expected vector. After that, the aircraft magnetic interference is compensated by LMS algorithm. Finally, the method is verified by simulation and experiment. The result shows that the compensation effect can be improved obviously by the LMS algorithm when original solved parameters have low precision. The method can further improve the compensation effect even if the solved parameters have high precision. 展开更多

The South China Sea(SCS)is the hotspot of geological scientific research and nature resource exploration and development due to the potential for enormous hydrocarbon resource development and a complex formation and evolution process. The SCS has experienced complex geological processes including continental lithospheric breakup, seafloor spreading and oceanic crust subduction, which leads debates for decades. However, there are still no clear answers regarding to the following aspects:the crustal and Moho structure, the structure of the continent-ocean transition zone, the formation and evolution process and geodynamic mechanism, and deep processes and their coupling relationships with the petroliferous basins in the SCS.Under the guidance of the“Deep-Earth”science and technology innovation strategy of the Ministry of Natural Resources, deep structural and comprehensive geological research are carried out in the SCS.Geophysical investigations such as long array-large volume deep reflection seismic, gravity, magnetism and ocean bottom seismometer are carried out.The authors proposed that joint gravitymagnetic-seismic inversion should be used to obtain deep crustal information in the SCS and construct high resolution deep structural sections in different regions of the SCS.This paper systematically interpreted the formation and evolution of the SCS and explored the coupling relationship between deep structure and evolution of Mesozoic-Cenozoic basins in the SCS.It is of great significance for promoting the geosystem scientific research and resource exploration of the SCS. 展开更多

Ground Frequency Domain Electromagnetic (FDEM) and Magnetic surveys were conducted in Southwest of the Ashanti belt in the Western Region of Ghana. The aim was to delineate potential gold mineralisation zones that may occur within the area. The magnetic data processing steps involved analytic signal, first vertical derivative, upward continuation, CET grid analysis as well as depth to basement model (Werner deconvolution). For the electromagnetic survey using the two coil separations (100 m and 150 m) and the multi frequencies (222 Hz, 888 Hz, 3555 Hz), the data in-phase component was processed to produce EM component maps showing the potential mineralisation zones. Lineament analysis using the rose diagram showed that the area is dominated by N-S and NNW-SSE lineaments. The upward continuation and depth to the magnetic source bodies indicated that the magnetic bodies in the study area can be located at depth less than 200 m. 展开更多
