The Quseir Formation consists mainly of dark gray mudstones with a high organic matter content and excellent hydrocarbon-generating potential. The main objectives of this study are to highlight the dominant structural elements in the Komombo Basin,Egypt, and evaluate the geochemical characteristics of the Quseir Formation.Depth maps and a 3 D structural model indicate two normal fault trends NW–SE and ENE–WSW.The NW–SE trend is the dominant one that created the primary half-graben system. The depth to the top of the Quseir Formation gradually decreases from the eastern and central parts towards the corners of the basin. The thickness of the Quseir Formation ranges from about 300 to 1000 ft.The 3 D facies model shows that the shale has a large probability distribution in the study area, compared with the sandstone and siltstone. The source rock potential varies between good in the western part to very good in the eastern part of the basin. The organic-rich interval is dominated by gas-prone kerogen type III based on TOC and Rock-Eval.The pyrolysis data vitrinite reflectance(%Ro)(0.5–0.74%)and Tmax values(406–454 C°)suggest a maturity level that ranges from immature to early maturity stage for hydrocarbon generation. 展开更多

The shear failure of intact rock under thermo-mechanical(TM)coupling conditions is common, such as in enhanced geothermal mining and deep mine construction.Under the effect of a continuous engineering disturbance,shear-formed fractures are prone to secondary instability, posing a severe threat to deep engineering.Although numerous studies regarding three-dimensional(3D)morphologies of fracture surfaces have been conducted, the understanding of shear-formed fractures under TM coupling conditions is limited. In this study, direct shear tests of intact granite under various TM coupling conditions were conducted, followed by 3D laser scanning tests of shear-formed fractures.Test results demonstrated that the peak shear strength of intact granite is positively correlated with the normal stress, whereas it is negatively correlated with the temperature. The internal friction angle and cohesion of intact granite significantly decrease with an increase in the temperature. The anisotropy, roughness value, and height of the asperities on the fracture surfaces are reduced as the normal stress increases, whereas their variation trends are the opposite as the temperature increases. The macroscopic failure mode of intact granite under TM coupling conditions is dominated by mixed tensileeshear and shear failures. As the normal stress increases, intragranular fractures are developed ranging from a local to a global distribution, and the macroscopic failure mode of intact granite changes from mixed tensileeshear to shear failure.Finally,3D morphological characteristics of the asperities on the shear-formed fracture surfaces were analyzed, and a quadrangular pyramid conceptual model representing these asperities was proposed and sufficiently verified. 展开更多

The three-dimensional(3D)model is of great significance to analyze the performance of nonwovens. However, the existing modelling methods could not reconstruct the 3D structure of nonwovens at low cost.A new method based on deep learning was proposed to reconstruct 3D models of nonwovens from multi-focus images.A convolutional neural network was trained to extract clear fibers from sequence images.Image processing algorithms were used to obtain the radius, the central axis, and depth information of fibers from the extraction results.Based on this information,3D models were built in 3D space.Furthermore,self-developed algorithms optimized the central axis and depth of fibers, which made fibers more realistic and continuous. The method with lower cost could reconstruct 3D models of nonwovens conveniently. 展开更多

Depth maps are used for synthesis virtual view in free-viewpoint television (FTV) systems. When depth maps are derived using existing depth estimation methods, the depth distortions will cause undesirable artifacts in the synthesized views. To solve this problem, a 3D video quality model base depth maps (D-3DV) for virtual view synthesis and depth map coding in the FTV applications is proposed. First, the relationships between distortions in coded depth map and rendered view are derived. Then, a precisely 3DV quality model based depth characteristics is develop for the synthesized virtual views. Finally, based on D-3DV model, a multilateral filtering is applied as a pre-processed filter to reduce rendering artifacts. The experimental results evaluated by objective and subjective methods indicate that the proposed D-3DV model can reduce bit-rate of depth coding and achieve better rendering quality. 展开更多

The mechanical characteristics of crystalline rocks are affected by the heterogeneity of the spatial distribution of minerals. In this paper,a novel three-dimensional(3D)grain-based model(GBM)based on particle flow code(PFC),i.e.PFC3D-GBM,is proposed. This model can accomplish the grouping of mineral grains at the 3D scale and then filling them. Then, the effect of the position distribution, geometric size, and volume composite of mineral grains on the cracking behaviour and macroscopic properties of granite are examined by conducting Brazilian splitting tests. The numerical results show that when an external load is applied to a sample, force chains will form around each contact, and the orientation distribution of the force chains is uniform, which is independent of the external load level.Furthermore, the number of high-strength force chains is proportional to the external load level, and the main orientation distribution is consistent with the external loading direction. The main orientation of the cracks is vertical to that of the high-strength force chains. The geometric size of the mineral grains controls the mechanical behaviours. As the average grain size increases, the number of transgranular contacts with higher bonding strength in the region connecting both loading points increases. The number of high-strength force chains increases, leading to an increase in the stress concentration value required for the macroscopic failure of the sample.Due to the highest bonding strength, the generation of transgranular cracks in quartz requires a higher concentrated stress value. With increasing volume composition of quartz, the number of transgranular cracks in quartz distributed in the region connecting both loading points increases, which requires many high-strength force chains. The load level rises, leading to an increase in the tensile strength of the numerical sample. 展开更多

The recently developed hard-magnetic soft(HMS)materials manufactured by embedding high-coercivity micro-particles into soft matrices have received considerable attention from researchers in diverse fields,e.g.,soft robotics, flexible electronics, and biomedicine.Theoretical investigations on large deformations of HMS structures are significant foundations of their applications. This work is devoted to developing a powerful theoretical tool for modeling and computing the complicated nonplanar deformations of flexible beams.A so-called quaternion beam model is proposed to break the singularity limitation of the existing geometrically exact(GE)beam model. The singularity-free governing equations for the three-dimensional(3D)large deformations of an HMS beam are first derived, and then solved with the Galerkin discretization method and the trustregion-dogleg iterative algorithm. The correctness of this new model and the utilized algorithms is verified by comparing the present results with the previous ones. The superiority of a quaternion beam model in calculating the complicated large deformations of a flexible beam is shown through several benchmark examples. It is found that the purpose of the HMS beam deformation is to eliminate the direction deviation between the residual magnetization and the applied magnetic field. The proposed new model and the revealed mechanism are supposed to be useful for guiding the engineering applications of flexible structures. 展开更多

Since each rock joint is unique by nature, the utilization of replicas in direct shear testing is required to carry out experimental parameter studies. However, information about the ability of the replicas to simulate the shear mechanical behavior of the rock joint and their dispersion in direct shear testing is lacking. With the aim to facilitate generation of high-quality direct shear test data from replicas,a novel component in the testing procedure is introduced by presenting two parameters for geometric quality assurance. The parameters are derived from surface comparisons of three-dimensional(3D)scanning data of the rock joint and its replicas. The first parameter, smf, captures morphological deviations between the replica and the rock joint surfaces.smf is derived as the standard deviation of the deviations between the coordinate points of the replica and the rock joint.Four sources of errors introduced in the replica manufacturing process employed in this study could be identified. These errors could be minimized, yielding replicas with smf0.06 mm.The second parameter is a vector,VHp100,which describes deviations with respect to the shear direction. It is the projection of the 100 mm long normal vector of the best-fit plane of the replica joint surface to the corresponding plane of the rock joint.VHp100was found to be less than or equal to 0.36 mm in this study.Application of these two geometric quality assurance parameters demonstrates that it is possible to manufacture replicas with high geometric similarity to the rock joint. In a subsequent paper(part 2),smf and VHp100 are incorporated in a novel quality assurance method,in which the parameters shall be evaluated prior to direct shear testing.Replicas having parameter values below established thresholds shall have a known and narrow dispersion and imitate the shear mechanical behavior of the rock joint. 展开更多

Each rock joint is unique by nature which means that utilization of replicas in direct shear tests is required in experimental parameter studies. However,a method to acquire knowledge about the ability of the replicas to imitate the shear mechanical behavior of the rock joint and their dispersion in direct shear testing is lacking. In this study,a novel method is presented for geometric quality assurance of replicas. The aim is to facilitate generation of high-quality direct shear testing data as a prerequisite for reliable subsequent analyses of the results. In Part 1 of this study, two quality assurance parameters, smf and V_(Hp100),are derived and their usefulness for evaluation of geometric deviations,i.e.geometric reproducibility,is shown. In Part 2,the parameters are validated by showing a correlation between the parameters and the shear mechanical behavior, which qualifies the parameters for usage in the quality assurance method.Unique results from direct shear tests presenting comparisons between replicas and the rock joint show that replicas fulfilling proposed threshold values of σ_(mf)<0.06 mm and|V_(Hp100)|<0.2 mm have a narrow dispersion and imitate the shear mechanical behavior of the rock joint in all aspects apart from having a slightly lower peak shear strength. The wear in these replicas, which have similar morphology as the rock joint,is in the same areas as in the rock joint. The wear is slightly larger in the rock joint and therefore the discrepancy in peak shear strength derives from differences in material properties, possibly from differences in toughness. It is shown by application of the suggested method that the quality assured replicas manufactured following the process employed in this study phenomenologically capture the shear strength characteristics, which makes them useful in parameter studies. 展开更多

Based on the loose medium flow field theory, the loose top-coal drawing law of longwall top-coal caving(LTCC) mining technology is studied by using self-developed three-dimensional(3D) test device. The loose top-coal drawing test with shields and the controlled test without shields are performed in the condition without any boundary effect. Test results show that shields will cause reduction in drawing volume of coal in the LTCC mining. The deflection phenomenon of drawing body is also observed in the controlled test, which is verified that the deflection of drawing body is caused by shield. It is found that the deflection angle decreases with increasing caving height, with the maximum value of atailand the minimum value of 0. In addition, the formula to calculate the drawing volume is proposed subsequently. The deflection of drawing body is numerically simulated using particle flow code PFC3 Dand the proposed formula to calculate drawing volume in LTCC is also verified. 展开更多

In situ stress condition in rock mass is influenced by both tectonic activity and geological environment such as faulting and shearing in the rock mass. This influence is of significance in the Himalayan region, where the tectonic movement is active, resulting in periodic dynamic earthquakes. Each large-scale earthquake causes both accumulation and sudden release of strain energy, instigating changes in the in situ stress environment in the rock mass. This paper first highlights the importance of the magnitude of the minimum principal stress in the design of unlined or shotcrete lined pressure tunnel as water conveyance system used for hydropower schemes. Then we evaluated the influence of local shear faults on the magnitude of the minimum principal stress along the shotcrete lined high pressure tunnel of Upper Tamakoshi Hydroelectric Project(UTHP)in Nepal.A detailed assessment of the in situ stress state is carried out using both measured data and three-dimensional(3D)numerical analyses with FLAC3D.Finally,analysis is carried out on the possible changes in the magnitude of the minimum principal stress in the rock mass caused by seismic movement(dynamic loading).A permanent change in the stress state at and nearby the area of shear zones along the tunnel alignment is found to be an eminent process. 展开更多

Long-span bridges are special structures that require advanced analysis techniques to examine their performance. This paper presents a procedure developed to model the Confederation Bridge using 3-D beam elements. The model was validated using the data collected before the opening of the bridge to the public. The bridge was instrumented to conduct fullscale static and dynamic tests. The static tests were to measure the deflection of the bridge pier while the dynamic tests to measure the free vibrations of the pier due to a sudden release of the static load. Confederation Bridge is one of the longest reinforced concrete bridges in the world. It connects the province of Prince Edward Island and the province of New Brunswick in Canada. Due to its strategic location and vital role as a transportation link between these two provinces, it was designed using higher safety factors than those for typical highway bridges. After validating the present numerical model, a procedure was developed to evaluate the performance of similar bridges subjected to traffic and seismic loads. It is of interest to note that the foundation stiffness and the modulus of elasticity of the concrete have significant effects on the structural responses of the Confederation Bridge. 展开更多

Urban development continues to reduce the amount of available ground space. The development of underground space is thus gath-ering increasing attention to alleviate ground congestion. However, there is currently a lack of a three-dimensional(3D)evaluation method to systematically evaluate the geological conditions of underground space and possible geological disaster risks caused by rock and soil masses. This paper presents an engineering geological suitability assessment framework based on 3D geological modeling and an analytic hierarchy process(AHP)-cloud model. As the basis for 3D evaluation,a 3D structural model of the study area is established based on the drilling data and geological profiles. Then the structural model is partitioned to obtain interpolation grids, and the ordinary Kriging interpolation method is applied to attribute interpolation. All the attributes are exported from the geological model, and the rock and soil masses are divided into four categories according to their engineering properties, namely soft soil, sandy soil, cohesive soil, and rock, upon which a targeted hierarchy structure is established based on the attributes that impact the suitability. This paper intro-duces the cloud model to characterize the uncertainty of these evaluation indexes, which synthesizes an AHP method, thus it is referred to as the AHP-cloud model. This new model is used to evaluate the geological suitability of underground space in the Sanlong Bay district,Foshan City,Guangdong,China. In addition,we also determine the excavation difficulty at different depths according to the lithology and weathering degree of the study area. The limitations and future directions of the proposed method are discussed, including the influ-encing factors and weight determination. 展开更多

The rise of artificial intelligence generated content(AIGC)has been remarkable in the language and image fields, but artificial intelligence(AI)generated three-dimensional(3D)models are still under-explored due to their complex nature and lack of training data. The conventional approach of creating 3D content through computer-aided design(CAD)is labor-intensive and requires expertise, making it challenging for novice users. To address this issue,we propose a sketch-based 3D modeling approach,Deep3DSketch-im,which uses a single freehand sketch for modeling. This is a challenging task due to the sparsity and ambiguity.Deep3DSketch-im uses a novel data representation called the signed distance field(SDF)to improve the sketch-to-3D model process by incorporating an implicit continuous field instead of voxel or points, and a specially designed neural network that can capture point and local features.Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, achieving state-of-the-art(SOTA)performance on both synthetic and real datasets.Additionally, users show more satisfaction with results generated by Deep3DSketch-im,as reported in a user study. We believe that Deep3DSketch-im has the potential to revolutionize the process of 3D modeling by providing an intuitive and easy-to-use solution for novice users. 展开更多
