These long-period waves result in large displacements for isolators, possibly leading to exceedance of the allowable displacement limits. Conventional isolation systems, in general, fail to resist such large displacements. This has prompted the need to modify conventional base isolation systems. The current work focuses on the development of an external device, comprising a unit of negative and positive springs, for improving the performance of conventional base isolation systems. This unit accelerates the change in the stiffness of the isolation system where the stiffness of the positive spring varies linearly in terms of the displacement response of the isolated objects. The target objects of the present study are small structures such as computer servers, sensitive instruments and machinery. Numerical studies show that the increase in the damping of the system and the slope of the linear function is effective in reducing the displacement response. An optimal range of damping values and slope, satisfying the stability condition and the allowable limits of both displacement and acceleration responses when the system is subjected to near-fault and long-period ground motions simultaneously, is proposed.展开更多

Nonlinear base isolation is used to reduce the structure vibration under ground excitation and the advantage of the isolation application is that the low-frequency resonance problem does not need to be considered due to its excitation characteristics, which significantly facilitate the isolation design. In order to obtain the response probabilistic distribution of a nonlinear system, the state space split technique is modified. As only a few degrees of freedom are subjected to the random noise, the probabilistic distribution of the response without involving stochastic excitation is represented by the δ function. Numerical results indicate that the proposed approach is effective and accurate. Moreover, the response probabilistic distributions are more reasonable and scientific than the peak responses calculated by conventional time and frequency domain methods.展开更多

The seismic retrofit was realized by connecting together the first floors of the three existing structures and by creating a unique isolation system composed of high damping rubber bearings and sliding devices. The base isolation is achieved by gradually cutting the building from foundation and installing the isolators at the level of upper edge of the columns. The study allows the verification of the adequacy of the isolation system, showing the benefits of the application of the isolation devices, the limitations and the characteristics of their performance.展开更多

In the present study, a new semi-active damping system using variable amplification will be investigated for adaptive baseisolation. It uses a novel variable amplification device (VAD) connected in series with a passive damper. The VAD is capable of producing multiple amplification factors, each corresponding to a different amplification state. Forces from the damper are amplified to the structure according to the current amplification state, which is selected via a semi-active control algorithm specifically tailored to the system's tmique damping characteristics. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the VAD-damper system for adaptive base-isolation, numerical simulations are conducted for three and seven-story base-isolated buildings subject to both far and near-field ground motions. The results indicate that the system can achieve significant reductions in response compared to the base-isolated buildings with no damper. The proposed system is also found to perform well compared to a typical semi-active damper.展开更多

Based on this system, the harmonic and subharmonic periodic response of S-LF subjected to harmonic motions is investigated by using Fourier-Galerkin-Newton (FGN) method with Flo-quet theory. The dynamic response of S-LF subjected to earthquake ground motions is calculated with a high order precision direct integration method, and the numerical results are presented in maximum acceleration response spectra of superstructure and maximum sliding displacement response spectrum form. The comparison of isolating effects of S-LF, pure-friction base isolation system (P-F) and resilient-friction base isolation system (R-FBI) shows that the isolating property of S-LF is superior to those of P-F and R-FBI. Finally, by analyzing an engineering example, it is observed that the distribution of the maximum shear between floors and absolute acceleration of S-LF to earthquake ground motion is very different from that of traditional structures.展开更多

Peak amplitude of the acceleration response waves on the small base isolation system is decreased to about 10%-25% compared to the input waves. Also root mean square amplitude is decreased to about 10%-40%. In case of the ball embedded a cylindrical sponge, the new bearing, the damping ratio increases with increasing width of the cylindrical sponge. The natural frequency does not change. On the other hand, in case of the marble plate that is previous bearing, the damping ratio increases with increasing curvature radius of the marble plate, the natural frequency also increases. Therefore, the small base isolation system using new friction bearing provides better performance. The responses of the base isolation system indicate nonlinier effects by friction force.展开更多

According to different types of base isolation devices, laminated rubber bearing which is made by thin layers of steel shims bonded by rubber is one of the most popular devices to reduce the effects of earthquake in the buildings. Laminated rubber bearings should be protected against failure or instability because failure of isolation devices may cause serious damage on the structures. Hence, the prediction of the behaviour of the laminated rubber bearing with different properties is essential in the design of a seismic bearing. In this paper, a finite element modeling of the laminated rubber bearing is presented. The procedures of modeling the rubber bearing with finite element are described. By the comparison of the numerical and the experimental, the validities of modelling and results have been determined. The results of this study perform that there is a good agreement between finite element analysis and experimental results.展开更多

The building foundation is modeled by a 200 mm by 200 mm and 40 mm thick rigid plexi-glass block. The block is placed in the middle of a 1m by 1m tank filled with sand. The selected base isolator is placed between the block and the sand foundation. Accelerometers are placed on top of the footing and foundation sand layer. The displacement of the footing is also measured by LVDT. The whole setup is mounted on a shake table and subjected to sinusoidal motions with varying amplitude and frequency. Sand is found to be effective only at very high amplitude (> 0.65 g) of motions. The performance of a composite consisting of sand and 50% shredded rubber tire placed under the footing is found to be most promising as a low-cost effective base isolator.展开更多

Three-dimensional models of 4-, 8-, and 12-story base-isolated buildings with nonlinear effects in the isolation system and the superstructure are investigated, and nonlinear response history analysis is carried out. The bounding values of isolation system properties that incorporate the aging effect of isolators are also taken into account, as is the current state of practice in the design and analysis of base-isolated buildings. The response indicators of the buildings are studied for near-fault and far-fault motions weight-scaled to represent the design earthquake (DE) level and the risk-targeted maximum considered earthquake (MCER) level. Results of the nonlinear response history analyses indicate no structural damage under DE-level motions for near-fault and far-fault motions and for MCER-level far-fault motions, whereas minor structural damage is observed under MCER- level near-fault motions. Results of the base-isolated buildings are compared with their fixed-base counterparts. Significant reduction of the superstructure response of the 12-story base-isolated building compared to the fixed-base condition indicates that base isolation can be effectively used in taller buildings to enhance performance. Additionally, the applicability of a rigid superstructure to predict the isolator displacement demand is also investigated. It is found that the isolator displacements can be estimated accurately using a rigid body model for the superstructure for the buildings considered.展开更多

Based on the computed tomography technique, the three-dimensional image of a ceramic sample is reconstructed successfully by stacking the slices at different heights. The imaging results not only indicate the ability of terahertz wave in the non-invasive sensing and non-destructive inspection applications, but also prove the effectiveness and superiority of the uni-traveling-carrier photodiode as a terahertz source in the imaging applications.

文摘A new hybrid numerical scheme of combining an E-CUSP(Energy-Convective Upwind and Split Pressure) method for the fluid part and the Constrained Transport(CT) for the magnetic induction part is proposed. In order to avoid the occurrence of negative pressure in the reconstructed profiles and its updated value,a positivity preserving method is provided.Furthermore, the MHD equations are solved at each physical time step by advancing in pseudo time. The use of dual time stepping is beneficial in the computation since the use of dual time stepping allows the physical time step not to be limited by the corresponding values in the smallest cell and to be selected based on the numerical accuracy criterion. This newly established hybrid scheme combined with positivity preserving method and dual time technique has demonstrated the accurateness and robustness through numerical experiments of benchmark problems such as the 2D Orszag-Tang vortex problem and the3 D shock-cloud interaction problem.

文摘BACKGROUND Lateral facial clefts are atypical with a low incidence in the facial cleft spectrum. With the development of ultrasonography(US)prenatal screening, such facial malformations can be detected and diagnosed prenatally rather than at birth.Although three-dimensional US(3DUS)can render the fetus'face via 3D reconstruction, the 3D images are displayed on two-dimensional screens without field depth, which impedes the understanding of untrained individuals. In contrast,a 3D-printed model of the fetus'face helps both parents and doctors develop a more comprehensive understanding of the facial malformation by creating more interactive aspects.Herein,we present an isolated lateral facial cleft case that was diagnosed via US combined with a 3D-printed model.CASE SUMMARY A 31-year-old G2P1 patient presented for routine prenatal screening at the 22nd wk of gestation. The coronal nostril-lip section of two-dimensional US(2DUS)demonstrated that the fetus'bilateral oral commissures were asymmetrical, and left oral commissure was abnormally wide. The left oblique-coronal section showed a cleft at the left oral commissure which extended to the left cheek. The results of 3DUS confirmed the cleft.Furthermore,we created a model of the fetal face using 3D printing technology, which clearly presented facial malformations. The fetus was diagnosed with a left lateral facial cleft, which was categorized as a No.7 facial cleft according to the Tessier facial cleft classification. The parents terminated the pregnancy at the 24th wk of gestation after parental counseling.CONCLUSION In the diagnostic course of the current case,in addition to the traditional application of 2D and 3DUS,we created a 3D-printed model of the fetus, which enhanced diagnostic evidence, benefited the education of junior doctors, improved parental counseling, and had the potential to guide surgical planning.
文摘The paper deals on a significant retrofit project currently under construction of an existing hospital building in Avellino (Italy). The study allows the verification of the adequacy of the isolation system, showing the benefits of the application of the isolation devices, the limitations and the characteristics of their performance.
文摘Semi-active dampers are used in base-isolation to reduce the seismic response of civil engineering structures. The proposed system is also found to perform well compared to a typical semi-active damper.
文摘This paper presents a new type of base isolation system, i. e. , slide-limited friction (S-LF) base isolation system . Finally, by analyzing an engineering example, it is observed that the distribution of the maximum shear between floors and absolute acceleration of S-LF to earthquake ground motion is very different from that of traditional structures.

文摘BACKGROUND: The accurate measurements of various data of the bone diameters of foramen ovale of living person can change the methods of puncturing trigeminal gasserian ganglion via foramen ovale for treating trifacial neuralgia from the experience of puncture operator only to puncture by taking the objective data of measurement as the evidence, which is good for improving the accuracy of puncturing trigeminal ganglion and reducing side effects. OBJECTIVE : To observe the forms of foramen ovales in healthy adults displayed by volume rendering and multi-planar reconstruction after three-dimensional spiral CT thin-slice scan of skull base, and measure the longitudinal diameter and transverse diameter. DESIGN : A repetitive observation and measurement SETTINGS : Department of Neurosurgery and Department of Medical Imaging, Foshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty healthy adults (100 sides), who were examined with three-dimensional spiral CT scan, were randomly selected from the Department of Medical Imaging, Foshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2005 to January 2006, including 26 males and 24 females, aged 25-68 years with an average of 48 years old. They were all informed and agreed with the examination. METHODS : The subjects were examined with the Philips 16-slice spiral CT-Mx 8000 IDT CT apparatus (Philips Company, Holland), the scanning ranged from 2 cm below the canthomeatal line to the level of suprasellar cistem. The width of collimator was 0.75 mm, pitch was 0.663; tube current was 350 mA, voltage was 120 kV, resolution was 512×512 matrix; slice thickness of reconstruction was 1 mm, and interval was 0.5 mm. After the three-dimensional spiral CT thin-slice scan of skull base, the image post-processing techniques including volume rendering and multi-planar reconstruction were applied to observe the forms of foramen ovales, and measure the size, longitudinal diameter and transverse diameter of the foramen ovales. The figures of the foramen ovales were drawn with mouse along the boundary of bone porous margin and soft tissue. According to the indications, the diameters were measured with computer to observe the forms of foramen ovales. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES : The longitudinal diameter, transverse diameter and form of foramen ovales were observed. RESULTS: All the 50 healthy adults (100 sides) were involved in the analysis of results. (1) It was observed in the volume rendering images that foramen ovales had four forms of oval shape (77 sides), kidney shape (12 sides), round shape (7 sides), ribbon shape (4 sides). (2) The longitudinal diameters of left and right foramen ovales were (7.67±1.32) and (7.98±1.45) mm, and the transverse diameters were (4.04±0.83), (4.09±1.07) mm; There was no obvious difference between left and right longitudinal diameters (t = 1.63, P = 0.11 ), and left and right transverse diameters were close (t = 0.45, P= 0.65). CONCLUSION : The non-invasive techniques of volume rendering and multi-planar reconstruction after three-dimensional spiral CT thin-slice scan can clearly display the formand size of foramen ovale in healthy adults.
文摘In this study, dynamic characteristics of the small base isolation system using new friction bearings are investigated by excitation experiment, and compared to other one using previous bearings. The responses of the base isolation system indicate nonlinier effects by friction force.
文摘Base isolation concept is currently accepted as a new strategy for earthquake resistance structures. The results of this study perform that there is a good agreement between finite element analysis and experimental results.

文摘The performance of a well-designed layer of sand, and composites like layer of sand mixed with shredded rubber tire (RSM) as low cost base isolators, is studied in shake table tests in the laboratory. The performance of a composite consisting of sand and 50% shredded rubber tire placed under the footing is found to be most promising as a low-cost effective base isolator.
文摘This paper reports on an investigation of the seismic response of base-isolated reinforced concrete buildings, which considers various isolation system parameters under bidirectional near-fault and far-fault motions. It is found that the isolator displacements can be estimated accurately using a rigid body model for the superstructure for the buildings considered.
