An optimized device structure for reducing the RESET current of phase-change random access memory (PCRAM) with blade-type like (BTL) phase change layer is proposed. The electrical thermal analysis of the BTL cell and the blade heater contactor structure by three-dimensional finite element modeling are compared with each other during RESET operation. The simulation results show that the programming region of the phase change layer in the BTL cell is much smaller, and thermal electrical distributions of the BTL cell are more concentrated on the TiN/GST interface. The results indicate that the BTL cell has the superiorities of increasing the heating efficiency, decreasing the power consumption and reducing the RESET current from 0.67mA to 0.32mA. Therefore, the BTL cell will be appropriate for high performance PCRAM device with lower power consumption and lower RESET current. 展开更多

Particles and fields represent two major modeling paradigms in pure and applied science at all. In this paper a methodology and some of the results for three-dimensional (3D) simulations that include both field and particle abstractions are presented. Electromagnetic field calculations used here are based on the discrete differential form representation of the finite elements method, while the Monte Carlo method makes foundation of the particle part of the simulations. The first example is the simulation of the feature profile evolution during SiO2 etching enhanced by Ar + /CF4 non-equilibrium plasma based on the sparse field method for solving level set equations. Second example is devoted to the design of a spiral inflector which is one of the key devices of the axial injection system of the VINCY Cyclotron. 展开更多

Carbon dioxide(CO2),the main gas emitted from fossil burning,is the primary contributor to global warming.Circulating fluidized bed reactor(CFBR)is proved as an energy-efficient method for post-combustion CO2 capture. The numerical simulation by computational fluid dynamics(CFD)is believed as a promising tool to study CO2 adsorption process in CFBR.Although three-dimensional(3D)simulations were proved to have better predicting performance with the experimental results,two-dimensional(2D)simulations have been widely reported for qualitative and quantitative studies on gas-solid behavior in CFBR for its higher computational efficiency recently. However, the discrepancies between 2D and 3D simulations have rarely been evaluated by detailed study.Considering that the differences between the 2D and 3D simulations will vary substantially with the changes of independent operating conditions,it is beneficial to lower computational costs to clarify the effects of dimensionality on the numerical CO2 adsorption runs under various operating conditions. In this work, the comparative analysis for CO2 adsorption in 2D and 3D simulations was conducted to enlighten the effects of dimensionality on the hydrodynamics and reaction behaviors,in which the separation rate, species distribution and hydrodynamic characteristics were comparatively studied for both model frames. With both accuracy and computational costs considered, the viable suggestions were provided in selecting appropriate model frame for the studies on optimization of operating conditions, which directly affect the capture and energy efficiencies of cyclic CO2 capture process in CFBR. 展开更多

Aerodynamic characteristic of the beetle, Trypoxylus dichotornus, which has a pair of elytra (forewings) and hind wings, is numerically investigated. Based on the experimental results of wing kinematics, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamic simulations were carried out to reveal aerodynamic performance of the hind wing. The roles of the spiral Leading Edge Vortex (LEV) and the spanwise flow were clarified by comparing 2D and 3D simulations. Mainly due to pitching down of chord line during downstroke in highly inclined stroke plane, relatively high averaged thrust was produced in the free forward flight of the beetle. The effects of the local corrugation and the camber variation were also investigated for the beetle's hind wings. Our results show that the camber variation plays a significant role in improving both lift and thrust in the flapping. On the other hand, the local corrugation pattern has no significant effect on the aerodynamic force due to large angle of attack during flapping. 展开更多

Scouring experiments were conducted using a three-dimensional laser scanning technology for angles of the jet spanning the interval from 0°to 30°,and the characteristics of the scour hole in equilibrium conditions were investigated accordingly. The results indicate that the optimal scouring effects occur when the jet angle is in the ranges between 15°and 20°.Moreover,the dimensionless profiles of the scour hole exhibit a high degree of similarity at different jet angles.Numerical simulations conducted using the Flow-3D software to investigate the bed shear stress along the jet impingement surface have shown that this stress is influenced by both the resultant force and the jet impingement surface area.It reaches its maximum value when the jet is vertical, decreases rapidly as the jet starts to tilt, then increases slightly, and decreases again significantly when the angle exceeds 20°. 展开更多

The geometry of joints has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of rocks. To simplify the curved joint shapes in rocks, the joint shape is usually treated as straight lines or planes in most laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. In this study, the computerized tomography (CT) scanning and photogrammetry were employed to obtain the internal and surface joint structures of a limestone sample, respectively. To describe the joint geometry, the edge detection algorithms and a three-dimensional (3D) matrix mapping method were applied to reconstruct CT-based and photogrammetry-based jointed rock models. For comparison tests, the numerical uniaxial compression tests were conducted on an intact rock sample and a sample with a joint simplified to a plane using the parallel computing method. The results indicate that the mechanical characteristics and failure process of jointed rocks are significantly affected by the geometry of joints. The presence of joints reduces the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS),elastic modulus, and released acoustic emission (AE) energy of rocks by 37%–67%,21%–24%,and 52%–90%,respectively.Compared to the simplified joint sample, the proposed photogrammetry-based numerical model makes the most of the limited geometry information of joints. The UCS,accumulative released AE energy, and elastic modulus of the photogrammetry-based sample were found to be very close to those of the CT-based sample. The UCS value of the simplified joint sample (i.e.38.5 MPa) is much lower than that of the CT-based sample (i.e.72.3 MPa).Additionally,the accumulative released AE energy observed in the simplified joint sample is 3.899 times lower than that observed in the CT-based sample.CT scanning provides a reliable means to visualize the joints in rocks, which can be used to verify the reliability of photogrammetry techniques. The application of the photogrammetry-based sample enables detailed analysis for estimating the mechanical properties of jointed rocks. 展开更多

Based on three-dimensional cellular automata (CA), a new stochastic simulation model to simulate the microstructures and particle flow of talus deposit is proposed. Ill addition, an auto-modeling program CARS is developed, with which nunaerical simulations can be conducted conveniently. For the problem of simulating mechanical behaviors of talus deposit, spatial anangement or sphere shapes should be considered. In the new modeling method, four sphere anangement models are developed for the particle flow simulation of talus deposit. Numerical results show that the talus deposit has the mechanical characteristics of typical stress-strain curves, as other rock-like materials. The cohesion of talus deposit decreases with increasing rock content, while the internal friction angle increases with increasing rock contents. Finally, numerical simulation is verified with the results of field test. 展开更多

The influence of externally mechanical loadings with a tensile strain and a compressive strain on the hysteresis and butterfly loops is studied numerically. By three-dimensional kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, the effects of the temperature, the flux rate, the total coverage and the interruption time on the distribution and the number of self-assembled InAs/GaAs (001) quantum dot (QD) islands are studied, which shows that a higher temperature, a lower flux rate and a longer growth time correspond to a better island distribution. The relations between the number of islands and the temperature and the flux rate are also successfully simulated. It is observed that for the total coverage lower than 0.5 ML, the number of islands decreases with the temperature increasing and other growth parameters fixed and the number of islands increases with the flux rate increasing when the deposition is lower than 0.6 ML and the other parameters are fixed. 展开更多

The influences of large areas of semi-unbounded cold water surface on the evolution, propagation and precipitation production of thunderstorms are simulated by using a fully elastic three-dimensional numerical hailstorm model. Real sounding profiles for temperature, humidity and wind are employed. The model has successfully simulated the significant modification of the propagation path of thunderstorms near the cold water area. The path change can be either' along-bank' or' toward-bank', depending on the position of the storm system relative to convergence zone of the water-land circulation. The simulations also show that thunderstorms developing or propagating within the convergence zone of local circulation will be intensified and produce much heavier hail, whereas those over cold water surface or the air that has been cooled by the water will be strongly inhibited. The influence of the cold water surface on thunderstorm characters is largely dependent upon the direction and intensity of the low-level wind. 展开更多

The failure mechanism of two-dimensional(2D) and three-dimensional(3D) slopes were investigated by using the strength reduction method. An extensive study of 3D effect was conducted with respect to boundary conditions, shear strength and concentrated surcharge load. The results obtained by 2D and 3D analyses were compared and the applicable scope of 2D and 3D method was analyzed. The results of the numerical simulation show that 3D effect is sensitive to the width of slip surface. As for slopes with specific geometry,3D effect is influenced by dimensionless parameter c/(γHtanφ).For those infinite slopes with local loading, external load has the major impact on failure mode. For those slopes with local loading and geometric constraints, the failure mode is influenced by both factors. With the increase of loading length, boundary condition exerts a more significant impact on the failure mode, and then 2D and 3D stability charts are developed, which provides a rapid and reliable way to calculate 2D and 3D factor of safety without iteration. Finally,a simple and practical calculation procedure based on the study of 3D effect and stability charts is proposed to recognize the right time to apply 2D or 3D method. 展开更多

The hydrodynamic characteristics of a rigid, single, circular cylinder in a three dimensional, incompressible, uniform cross flow were calculated using the large-eddy simulation method of CFX5. Solutions to the three dimensional N-S equations were obtained by the finite volume method. The focus of this numerical simulation was to research the characteristics of pressure distribution (drag and litt forces) and vortex tubes at high Reynolds numbers. The results of the calculations showed that the forces at every section in the spanwise direction of the cylinder were symmetrical about the middle section and smaller than the forces calculated in two dimensional cases. Moreover, the flow around the cylinder obviously presents three dimensional characteristics. 展开更多

Through combined applications of the transfer-matrix method and asymptotic expansion technique,we formulate a theory to predict the three-dimensional response of micropolar plates. No ad hoc assumptions regarding through-thickness assumptions of the field variables are made, and the governing equations are two-dimensional,with the displacements and microrotations of the mid-plane as the unknowns.Once the deformation of the mid-plane is solved,a three-dimensional micropolar elastic field within the plate is generated, which is exact up to the second order except in the boundary region close to the plate edge.As an illustrative example, the bending of a clamped infinitely long plate caused by a uniformly distributed transverse force is analyzed and discussed in detail. 展开更多

Hypoxia is a typical feature of the tumor microenvironment, one of the most critical factors affecting cell behavior and tumor progression. However, the lack of tumor models able to precisely emulate natural brain tumor tissue has impeded the study of the effects of hypoxia on the progression and growth of tumor cells. This study reports a three-dimensional(3D)brain tumor model obtained by encapsulating U87MG(U87)cells in a hydrogel containing type I collagen. It also documents the effect of various oxygen concentrations(1%,7%,and 21%)in the culture environment on U87 cell morphology, proliferation, viability, cell cycle, apoptosis rate, and migration. Finally,it compares two-dimensional(2D)and 3D cultures. For comparison purposes, cells cultured in flat culture dishes were used as the control(2D model).Cells cultured in the 3D model proliferated more slowly but had a higher apoptosis rate and proportion of cells in the resting phase(G0 phase)/gap I phase(G1 phase)than those cultured in the 2D model.Besides, the two models yielded significantly different cell morphologies.Finally,hypoxia(e.g.,1%O2)affected cell morphology, slowed cell growth, reduced cell viability, and increased the apoptosis rate in the 3D model. These results indicate that the constructed 3D model is effective for investigating the effects of biological and chemical factors on cell morphology and function, and can be more representative of the tumor microenvironment than 2D culture systems. The developed 3D glioblastoma tumor model is equally applicable to other studies in pharmacology and pathology. 展开更多

The current detection methods mostly are used after casing damage, which is not very effective. With the rapid development of China's offshore oil industry, the number of offshore oil wells is becoming larger and larger. Because the cost of offshore oil well is very high, the casing damage will cause huge economic losses. What's more, it can also bring serious pollution to marine environment. So the effective methods of detecting casing damage are required badly. The accumulation of stress is the main reason for the casing damage. Magnetic anisotropy technique based on counter magnetostriction effect can detect the stress of casing in real time and help us to find out the hidden dangers in time. It is essential for us to prevent the casing damage from occurring. However, such technique is still in the development stage. Previous studies mostly got the relationship between stress and magnetic signals by physical experiment, and the study of physical mechanism in relative magnetic permeability connecting the stress and magnetic signals is rarely reported. The present paper uses the ANSYS to do the three-dimensional finite element numerical simulation to study how the relative magnetic permeability works for the oil casing model. We find that the quantitative relationship between the stress' s variation and magnetic induction intensity's variation is: Δδ =K* ΔB, K = 8.04×109, which is proved correct by physical experiment. 展开更多

Earth’s magnetopause is a thin boundary separating the shocked solar wind plasma from the magnetospheric plasmas, and it is also the boundary of the solar wind energy transport to the magnetosphere.Soft X-ray imaging allows investigation of the large-scale magnetopause by providing a two-dimensional(2-D)global view from a satellite.By performing 3-D global hybrid-particle-in-cell(hybrid-PIC)simulations,we obtain soft X-ray images of Earth’s magnetopause under different solar wind conditions, such as different plasma densities and directions of the southward interplanetary magnetic field. In all cases, magnetic reconnection occurs at low latitude magnetopause. The soft X-ray images observed by a hypothetical satellite are shown, with all of the following identified:the boundary of the magnetopause, the cusps, and the magnetosheath.Local X-ray emissivity in the magnetosheath is characterized by large amplitude fluctuations(up to 160%);however,the maximum line-of-sight-integrated X-ray intensity matches the tangent directions of the magnetopause well, indicating that these fluctuations have limited impact on identifying the magnetopause boundary in the X-ray images. Moreover, the magnetopause boundary can be identified using multiple viewing geometries. We also find that solar wind conditions have little effect on the magnetopause identification. The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)mission will provide X-ray images of the magnetopause for the first time, and our global hybrid-PIC simulation results can help better understand the 2-D X-ray images of the magnetopause from a 3-D perspective, with particle kinetic effects considered. 展开更多

Spinal cord injury is considered one of the most difficult injuries to repair and has one of the worst prognoses for injuries to the nervous system.Following surgery, the poor regenerative capacity of nerve cells and the generation of new scars can make it very difficult for the impaired nervous system to restore its neural functionality.Traditional treatments can only alleviate secondary injuries but cannot fundamentally repair the spinal cord.Consequently, there is a critical need to develop new treatments to promote functional repair after spinal cord injury.Over recent years, there have been seve ral developments in the use of stem cell therapy for the treatment of spinal cord injury.Alongside significant developments in the field of tissue engineering,three-dimensional bioprinting technology has become a hot research topic due to its ability to accurately print complex structures. This led to the loading of three-dimensional bioprinting scaffolds which provided precise cell localization. These three-dimensional bioprinting scaffolds co uld repair damaged neural circuits and had the potential to repair the damaged spinal cord.In this review,we discuss the mechanisms underlying simple stem cell therapy, the application of different types of stem cells for the treatment of spinal cord injury, and the different manufa cturing methods for three-dimensional bioprinting scaffolds. In particular,we focus on the development of three-dimensional bioprinting scaffolds for the treatment of spinal cord injury. 展开更多
